A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Chuck Tanner

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 12, 2011

I was sorry to hear about the passing of Chuck Tanner. Growing up, the non-Giant managers that I always noticed were Lasorda, Weaver and Tanner. The 1979 Pirates team was just a revelation. Madlock, Stargell, Parker, big ‘ol John Candelaria, Tekulve’s wild- ass delivery….

That team had the characters on it for sure. Actually, the personality of that team reminds me a lot of our 2010 Giants. But the big difference was how involved the country got with the Pirates. “We are Family” took over the airwaves and became one of the few positive things to latch on to during an uncertain, very negative time in the world’s history. Baseball has always been that way for me—something to latch on to and focus on no matter what negative things are happening to or around me…….

And Chuck Tanner was their leader. More than once, as a kid, I remember wishing we had a manager like him…..

There’s four days until pitchers and catchers report?

We’ll probably never see any kind of “nation-wide” phenomenon again regarding baseball. The sport just isn’t as popular with the general public as it was 30 years ago. One of the ways you can see that is how few baseball players get national commercial endorsement deals anymore. All these years later, even someone like Jeter isn’t well-known outside of baseball fandom.
The ones that are well-known with the general public these days are the ones connected with scandal- A-Rod, Bonds, etc.

We’ll probably never see the Pittsburgh Pirates win the World Series again.

One of my great regrets in life is not cobbling together any tit pics in the “magic number” widget.

anyone notice how the Chronicle is starting to delay more and more of their sports articles/columns at least a day or two at sfgate.com? I don’t think the Merc or other major papers are doing this but I could be wrong–trying anything to keep selling that paper, I guess……

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on February 12, 2011 at 9:38 am

Yes it’s true. But at least they admit it and they tell you that’s what they’re doing in the print version

I noticed that too. I get it in the immediate aftermath of the WS but waiting for the content in the depths of winter? Come on. Pay for content is only increasing and it is a god damn shame.

TF’s in rehab? He best snap some naked pics of Lindsay Lohan while he’s there.
Get well soon ya fuckwad. I kind of miss being called a fuckwad in his absence.

I wish today would never end; those are four nice counting markers.

    4 Paulie:
    noun: marker
Some conspicuous object used to distinguish or mark something

Famous last line in a casino; “My marker’s good.”

got kind of a bummer email from Twin. He said they screwed up the first surgery and had to go back for a 2nd one. Both surgeries combined to really weaken his right side and he’s spent the last week learning how to walk again. But, it sounds like he’s in the clear and getting back to baseline. I have a ph # for him, if you want it email me at bigflavor77@gmail.com

sorry to say I don’t remember Chuck Tanner that much. I certainly DO remember the Pirates ‘Family’ success of those days.
Baseball for me has always been ‘the beautiful’ game. a team sport with chess-like mentality. Like George Carlin said: baseball is played on a diamond.

Latest pic of Pablo from the pool. Looking pretty good. His bro on the other hand could give those two blondes a run for their money.

Good to see ya back, TF. Who’d ya have in the Super Bowl? I was giving out winners over on Chuckle’s blog like they were going outta style. Did ya hear about our biggest FA p/u of the year? We got friggin’ Lou Piniella. Sweet.

Welcome back TF, don’t try to do to much. That second surgery thing seems to be going around. I had elbow surgery (ulner nerve moved) on Jan 4. ended up having a slow bleeder that wouldn’t heal. went into surgery to repair that on Jan 28. Certainly not as serious as your!!

Just read the NFL Pro Bowl got bigger TV ratings than any of the World Series games. That blows.

Also, whoever is in charge of flying a banner over Chavez Ravine at the season opener, bad idea. Act like you’ve been there before. Don’t turn into Red Sox Nation West. Lame

TF stopped by the splash, too. Good to see him back at the computer.

I’m amused by the “day, hour, minute, second” countdown clock the Giants have on sfgiants.com. I don’t think it’s accurate. It suggests that pitchers and catchers report at 12 a.m. Monday.

I keep going back and forth on which one of those chicks I’d do SECOND and it’s giving my brain a mental illness. I might have to bring back a “babe of the day” widget. You know, *retro*

BOTD works for my retrofitting. I’m not partial to blondes, but I’m taking a left hand turn in that picture. Must be the NASCAR fan coming out, but I’ll go a few few laps around the track counterclockwise.

Ah, it will be a great week. Pitchers and catchers — and hopefully Michael — will report for duty….

  21. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on February 12, 2011 at 8:54 pm

Just got off the phone with Twin. He still can’t believe NO Whitey is on our roster. But his bigger disbelief is that you Dunderheads still think Vern and Vera attend all his games. Nobody could love a son that much.

Twin’s really excited about Buster continuing to improve off his ROY campaign. And he thinks Pablo is poised to duplicate his ’09 numbers if not more. Plans are for a return home, sometime mid-week.

I don’t know about you *bad luck chumps* but I’ve won about 30 million British pounds over the last week; maybe delivered over the course of about 10 emails? You see, it’s all unclaimed money, offered up to me by guys named Bertrand Gunderrheim or whatever. And yet I still don’t respond to their emails. What’s wrong with me?

Never been partial to blondes but would probably go right. Can’t go wrong with those fun bags.
