Dear Barry: Please Don’t Pitch Today

Unfortunately, all signs are pointing to Zito taking the hill this evening at 5pm. Bad idea. I’m sure that Barry is saying all the right things to the medical staff. He’s a gamer. Game on. When your skills have eroded to near career ending I guess all you have left is your *game face*.

There is an awful lot of manly-manly-ness in baseball. There’s no crying in baseball. There’s no whining in baseball. And for the most part you wouldn’t ever beg out of the starting line up because you feel sore…..

But this is different. Zito was in a major car crash. His neck and back, at the very least, have to be awfully stiff and sore right now. For a pitcher, stiff and sore is not exactly the way your back is supposed to feel when you take the mound. Besides his obvious range of motion issues in his wind up, how do you think he’s going to cover balls hit near the mound? How’s he going to cover first base? Jeez, how’s he even supposed to check the runner at first base if he’s having trouble turning his neck?

This is a guy who was throwing 82 mph fastballs in Spring Training. And now he’s been in a car crash. That new ‘stash isn’t expected to improve anything either. I am firmly entrenched in the “ABZ (Anybody But Zito) Camp”. I would have wished to see Zito skip a start and move Bumgarner up to pitch tonight. Hell, the could have called Voglesong up to pitch and I would have preferred it. ABZ, baby.

I love being wrong so let’s see Zito prove me so. But I think what we are going to see is a guy gingerly take the mound armed with his game face and little else and leave about an hour later in the third inning after giving up a bunch of walks/hits and runs.

Don’t ever listen to what the player says. They all lie. He’s not fine…….

With Zito you never know. My policy for this evening is simply ‘wait and see’. Tim Brown at Yahoo Sports MLB seems to have developed a warm spot for the Champs. He does a nice feature on Matt the Horse today, headlining his piece “Pure Cain Sugar”. Timmy may have the flash and the dash (but no more stache) Cain is just plain solid. The Horse is a rock. Three solid starts to date from this Rotation. Four of five not unlikely.

Just looked over that schedule for April. Sure, it’s heavy on road games, but it does not look all that daunting. Giants will have a winning April and then go on to make hay in May.

Lot of pitchers with higher quality than Zito are fucked up right now, a number of them (Latos, Ubaldo, delaRosa, Garland) in the West. 3 more guys from the pen got an innings work yesterday so everyone should be ready to go when called upon. Slap Kuroda around and it shouldn’t make any difference.
If Zito takes the ball, it’s on him for whatever happens afterward. You step btw the lines, it counts. The schierholtz camp has complained for two years he’s been hurt and bothered by lingering injuries. BS…if you aren’t physically well enough to play baseball, then sit and let the team play someone who is. Otherwise, stfu.

A piece in the Gate said he threw a Friday session at full speed. I’ll defer again to Boch and Rags on this one. I’m sure they will keep a close eye on him and have the pen avail with Mon an off day. They didn’t want to move Bum up because I believe he pitched 6 inn on Weds.

And the Giants’ coaching/training/medical staff doesn’t know a player will say anything to get on the field? Please. While sending Zito out there so soon after the accident is a valid concern, I’m sure they’ve double-, triple- and quadruple-checked on him and will continue to do so right up until game time. If they deem he’s good to go, that’s good enough for me.

That said, I guess I’d be an idiot not to start Kuroda tonite.

Aren’t most of the pitchers in the league stiff/sore by July anyways? If there’s no structural damage Zits can pop a couple painkillers and be his usual mediocre self.

And what’s with the continued “anyone but Zito” mantra? Yes, the fucker is grossly overpaid, but if we’ve learned nothing else over the last 13 months it’s that he’s still a tier above the Wellemeyers and Suppans of the world.

  I believe he won exactly as many games as Jeff cocksucking Suppan did. Compare actual performance over that same period (BA, K/BB, etc) and Zito is far better. We won’t even get into the first half of the season. I’d look up Wellemeyer’s numbers over that same period, but Baseball Reference doesn’t seem to record stats from the bus leagues.

Zito can wear his neck brace on the mound for all I care. Either get it done, or don’t, that’s the bottom line. Bochy should have his usual lightning hook ready for the Zenman, when the signs appear for the oncoming meltdown. Go 5 full, give up 3, I’d take it and then gladly call in the Pen. Wouldn’t be surprised if this one ends up 7-5 or 8-6 or some such…

And chuck, the severity of the crash waS reported. Anyone who’s ever been in a crash knows how it feels a few days later lots of soreness, especially in the neck area. Obviously the docs cleared him of any major damage but he’s far from normal right now. Maybe they pump him up full of pain killers but that’s not the way I want to see him pitch either. Hey, it’s a 5pm gm he’ll have the shadows going for him. I guess that’s something.

sorry, but you can’t ignore the contract. There are 4 better SPs than him on this team alone…what if they all made Zito money? I be willing to bet SF could find a very serviceable #5 IF they could dump his ass…only they can’t so they are stuck with him. Don’t tell me the guaranteed money in the contract does not affect what goes on with the rest of the roster.
And just for the record, ABZ happened to be the stance management took for last year’s playoffs and World Series. They made the decision then and I’m sure would do it again…there are 11 pitchers (regardless of what they make) they would rather have on the team than him, and it proved a sound judgement.

I’d take that every start from the Zitoid, then I’ll put the SF Pen against anybody’s. I WANT this dude to be good. I don’t want this guy to fail for the coin he’s getting. But, will I be thrilled and expecting great stuff when he takes the hill on his next start? Starting with Runzler there was Bochy’s boo-boo. Doesn’t know the kid all that well yet. Sure, he’s probably the keenest guy outta the pen right now, BUT, he appeared in both those first two losses and obviously did not have his usual acuity, probably as a result. Not to worrry. This is early April. Humiliating, but the kinda learning experience which neither Bruce nor Dan will forget. Rags will be there to remind them and so will a skidding start to the season. Not one more time this season is Bochy apt to wanna overuse Runzler.

When Ross comes back Belt should go down. Ouch. Look, this team was really built around last years champs, with Huff at First. I know Belt can hit, I know he’s the future, but right now Belt is displacing too many starters. With Ross out, the LU should be Huff at first and DeRosa in Right (IMO). Yes I’m serious, OUCH. When Ross is back, Huff should be playing First.

    No, Belt comes up again if someone goes down or the team needs a change (major slump, injury).
    The kid is going to be a GG and a hell of an addition, but right now, the way the team was built seems to me he’s disruptive. I just think Belt at First with Huff/DeRosa in LF isn’t a better LU than Huff at First and Pat/DeRosa in Left.
    Whatever, Den is selling stones to throw. And yes, I hope the kid and the Team proves me wrong.
