A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

What a Great Game

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 13, 2011

Last night’s game was everything Monday’s game wasn’t. Coming back from a 3 run deficit against Lady Billingsley is not an easy task. Rowand came through not once but twice and that’s the only reason he beats out Mota for POTG—if Mota doesn’t do what he did this game is over. I just don’t know how to do a split-screen picture of 2 dudes or they would be co-POTG……

Posey got it going, Pablo’s double was electric, Wilson chipped his ERA down to a svelte 19.29. Hell, even Belt got a hit….

Our defense still sucked but you can’t have everything. Great win…..

Bozo the Clown is in first place. As noted by Snarkk, Mayan 2012 is upon us…….

Only thing I hated is Affeldt losing the win for Lincecum, especially since I have Timmy in my money league. But I thought that was the most dominant Mota has been since he has been here.

Interesting watching the Uribe reaction to getting hit by Timmy for second time. There is some more baseball chatter about the Giants making a move for Jose Reyes trade deadline or as a free agent.

One thing that leaves us very vulnerable offensively is when Torres is not available. No speed at the top and Torres’ ability to get the double really minimizes our offense when not there.

I like what Reyes can bring…

DJLoo had his eye on Reyes back before ST. I think he envisioned many triples.

A game like last night just reassures you that this team still has the character that carried them through last year. I watched a replay of the Donny-two-trips game this past winter and every time Zumie refers to it as an example of the Giants never-quit approach, I know exactly what he means. Last night was that sort of game. They just never gave up. We’ll enjoy many such games this year.

Win was critical in a number of ways ~ most important was that they brushed off any notions the Bums had about ownage (except for Kershaw, perhaps). Buster finding his hitting shoes again was another key. With his average now north of .300, Gerald reverts to Buster batting cleanup. Mota’s hold with Timmy on the ropes was monstrous huge. He comes off a bit of a bubble with that one. Wilson’s reversion to form? Nothing less than key to a winning season for los Gigantes de San Francisco. Sanchez, Sandoval and Belt getting key hits ~ you expect that of the Champs. Romo’s no-nonsense hold as set-up man ~ shows that at game 11 the pieces are falling into their proper order. Rowand: Evidently determined to prove that he’s worth a chunk of that salary and that his pride is keeping the contributions flowing.

This was a team win, with guys picking each other up all over the place. Returns of Torres and Ross should put some rebar into that fast hardening concrete.

I’m reading through the “Baseball Codes” book by J. Turbow, mostly anecdotal stories about the unwritten rules, etc. I realize the game situation involving Lincecum and Uribe rules out intent, but that’s twice he’s been hit, and that can’t be fun to catch the Kid’s fastball with a body part on a night like last night. Last time it happened he missed a few days.
I think the Code would be pretty clear on this one, and a Giant takes one for the team, like maybe our starting third baseman.

Jose Reyes has to prove he can actually play baseball for more than a month and stay in the LU. There was a Splash guy talking this up a month ago, and the issues are the same. If he can play like before, why would the Mets, who are more than liikely looking up at the rest of the division, dump one of their very few crowd pleasing players? Not to mention of course what a player of that caliber would cost in a deal….you aren’t getting him for Affeldt or Mota and a minor leaguer, and I don’t think the Mets would be interested in taking on more salary.

This could be Rowand’s annual 1-2 week run. Last yr it was May 2 – 9, when he went 11/32, hit 3 hrs and drove in 11. In 09, it was the first two weeks of June.
His most consistent stretch came in 08, when he was hitting over .300 well into June. It’s a lot to expect it to last this time, but it couldn’t have come at a better time.

I don’t read anything into Lincecum hitting Uribe beyond him trying to strike him out. If the intent was to hit him, why throw 3 or 4 fastballs in the zone?

    • willied's avatar willied said, on April 13, 2011 at 8:25 am

Yeah, in that situation he was trying to strike him out, with runners on and a full count. He lost control of it trying to come in tight after going away on a pitch Uribe fouled off.
But I don’t see how LA pitchers can let SF hit one of its guys twice in home and away series without getting some payback.

Whether it got away from him or not, unlike in LA, Lincecum didn’t seem to really give a shit that he hit him. That is the competitive asshole Lincecum that the club feeds off of.

Reyes is pie in the sky. As mentioned above, why would NY want to part with him if he stays healthy and performs? A better backup than Fontenot and DeRosa at SS would be good though. What is up with DeRosa anyway? Outside of the start the other day dude isn’t getting much daylight. Tender wrist still?

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 13, 2011 at 9:30 am

B4 the season I wasn’t counting on DeRosa for anything, time would tell. Still, I’m surprised he hasn’t played more. Appeared in 6 games of 11, but only 11 ABs. That works to 150+ ABs for a season, not much. I woulda thought we’d see more of him given these initial defensive troubles. Wrists are tricky things; healthy ones are a requisite for swinging a bat, and his has been cut on twice. Given the “tendinitis” in spring, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still not 100%…

  13. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 13, 2011 at 9:07 am

No intent on Timmy hitting Uribe. He was at 108 or some odd pitch count, was starting to labor, and Bochy had just gone out to ask him if has done. He musta said no, Bochy let him stay, then Timmy proceeded to lose it and plunk Uribe. Then, he WAS done and Mota came in…

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on April 13, 2011 at 9:28 am

Intent doesn’t matter. Obviously Timmy didn’t want to hit him with a 1-2 count on him. But Uribe’s been plunked with 2 fastballs in a short amount of time.

Yeah, who knows where they’re at? I tend to think itz not good for Bonds, because some or one obviously must be sticking with a guilty verdict on at least one count. 4 days out on 4 counts. But, longer could also mean they’re hung on one or all counts, which IMO is just as good as an acquittal for Bonds, because the gov’t can’t do this again. Or, maybe they just like the lunches…

It’s always difficult to keep personal prejudice out of a thing like this. And wherever you run into it, prejudice always obscures the truth. I don’t really know what the truth is. I don’t suppose anybody will ever really know. Nine of us now seem to feel that the defendant is innocent, but we’re just gambling on probabilities – we may be wrong. We may be trying to let a guilty man go free, I don’t know. Nobody really can. But we have a reasonable doubt, and that’s something that’s very valuable in our system. No jury can declare a man guilty unless it’s SURE. We nine can’t understand how you three are still so sure. Maybe you can tell us.

Rowand’s “streak” could just possibly be a bit more than that. Aaron’s hot spell last year got pretty quickly terminated by an injury. After that he was not the same. it’s probably happened before as well. Could occur again this season. Maybe not. Chances are. What if he reverts to the kinda guy who hits .280, with ten dingers and a hundred and ten runs produced? Maybe just as likely as falling on his face again.

Rowand clearly is a proud dude. No doubt he WANTS to contribute. He’s out to prove something. Did so last night, anyway. I’ve cut Row-Row about as much as anyone on this board. Right now i’m cutting him some slack. Think he’s earned that.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on April 13, 2011 at 10:29 am

This is what I sort of inferred yesterday. Rowand always seems to *start* the season well enough. And then…WHAMMO. Something always happens

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on April 13, 2011 at 10:30 am

Yeah, it comes down to numbers for Rowand with Ross and Torres returning soon. Huff certainly doesn’t need to be in the outfield. So, that puts Belt at risk. Then there’s Burrell and Schierholtz. Burrell isn’t going to be very happy riding the bench like Rowand did last year. But if Rowand keeps hitting, Schierholtz is the odd man out, and Burrell splits time in LF with Rowand. Unless Torres isn’t quite right, and Rowand splits time with Torres. But all these scenarios point to Schierholtz going. Unless they sent Belt down.

Bochy’s proven to be very good at all this shuffling, so hey, wiat and see . . .

  23. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on April 13, 2011 at 10:43 am

My prediction: Belt goes down fairly soon. After a stumbling, staggering start at Fresno, he goes inside, gets hold of himself and goes on a tear, battering and blasting AAA pitching. Sometime in July either someone gets injured or sours out and Brandon gets the Call. He keeps on doing to ML pitching exactly the way he has ‘blessed’ AAA hurling, providing the same shot in the arm for the team that Buster did a year earlier. Once again we can start talking about bustering it up and belting em out.

OK, for once I can be on her ein the afternoon…first response is to Willied…

The reason the mets mmay move Reyes at the trade deadline is because he is afree agent and the mess in NY with the mets and its potential bankruptcy may very well have a free agent like Reyes looking for a championship elsewhere. How much salary is going to Beltran, Santana and Jason Bay? They wont be players for a long-term deal for Reyes, therefore he may be a piece to move by the trade deadline.

I think it would take a piece like Jonathan Sanchez to land him. If that is too high, wait for free agency. But the Mets are not going to sit on their hands and let Reyes walk unless they are in th emiddle of a playoff chase and that seems fairly questionable this year.

Now responding to Flav, the chatter about Reyes and the Giants I think was emanating from Bobby Valentine on the MLB channel, but was in my car and not sure he uttered the thoughts. Valentine has good sources obviously with the Mets…..

  42. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on April 13, 2011 at 3:07 pm

The obstruction count incorporated the alleged false statements from the three perjury counts and added a few additional statements about Greg Anderson. If they couldn’t find him guilty on the three perjury counts, could they use those statements to find obstruction of justice? If not, then they focused on the statements about Anderson. (The weird “celebrity child” digression the Merc mentions was part of the testimony about his relationship with Anderson.) Sounds like a shitty verdict to me.

      OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE
      (18 U.S.C. § 1503)
The defendant is charged in Count Five with obstruction of justice in violation of 18 U.S.C.
§ 1503. In order for the defendant to be found guilty of Count 5, the government must prove each of the
following elements beyond a reasonable doubt:
      1. The defendant corruptly, that is, for the purpose of obstructing justice,
      2. obstructed, influenced, or impeded, or endeavored to obstruct, influence, or impede the
grand jury proceeding in which defendant testified,
      3. by knowingly giving material testimony that was intentionally evasive, false, or
      misleading.
A statement was material if it had a natural tendency to influence, or was capable of influencing,
the decision of the grand jury.
The government alleges that the underlined portion of the following statements constitute
material testimony that was intentionally evasive, false or misleading. In order for the defendant to be
found guilty of Count 5, you must all agree that one or more of the following statements was material
and intentionally evasive, false or misleading, with all of you unanimously agreeing as to which
      statement or statements so qualify:
      1. The Statement Contained in Count One
      2. The Statement Contained in Count Two
      3. The Statement Contained in Count Three

sure it’s crystal clear. Every time you got the flax seed oil and the cream, did you get it in person

Thanks for the detailed info, Xoot. Do you think it was Bond’s denial of being injected by Anderson that the jury found impeded the gov’s case against the trainer? If so it’s ironic given that Anderson’s refusal to testify has protected Bonds.

  43. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 13, 2011 at 3:07 pm

On the one hand the result was idiotic and contradictory, on the other, brilliant. They hung on the perjury counts, which says at least some of them couldn’t swallow the cheeziness of the gov’t witnesses, and the gov’t tactics. So, they slapped the gov’t on those, which was the meat of the case. On the other, despite no agreement on perjury, which seems needed as a basis for an obstruction conviction, they slapped Bonds anyway for being a lying jerk, just not a legally lying jerk. If you read the obstruction indictment, it includes false testimony “including, but not limited to” the specific perjury charges. Wow, 8 years and millions for one obstruction count, and likely house arrest for 3 months. What a waste, and a very Bondsian ending. Bonds’ defense will likely appeal the conviction on obstruction as inconsistent with the mistrial on the perjury charges…

  44. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 13, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Just heard it was 11-1 guilty on the injection charge, 9-3 and 8-4 both guilty on the other perjury charges. Jurors being quoted as saying the guilty on obstruction was for being “evasive” during the testimony, which is part of the element of that charge in the indictment. Barry better get out his checkbook for an appeal to fight a compromise and inconsistent verdict..

Bonds and his lawyers must be happy, not ecstatic as if there were all acquitals, but happy. They dodged the perjury charges, though barely on the most dangerous one. Plus, obstruction carries a kind of nebulousness to it with the public, and under these circumstances, might have a decent chance of getting tossed on appeal. I would bet against a re-trial. The gov’t could tighten up its case and maybe it’s heartened by the 11-1 count, but the defense would also know better the prosecution’s strengths, and probably dig more at Kathy Hoskins. I would think that after all this circus, the political wind against a redux would be enormous…
