A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Moving on From a Forgettable Series at Home

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 25, 2011

That little 3 gamer series just never got going, did it? Actually, despite the result, yesterday’s game had it all. They came back from multi run deficits twice. That’s hard to do and there’s no quit in this team at all……

Now they get to go play in the prettiest ball park east of ATT—But Pittsburgh is no pushover. That team has some of the most exciting (though currently slumping) position players in the game–Andrew McCutchen, Jose (you say tomato, I say) Tabata, and Pedro Alvarez. An interesting side story will be to see how Brandon Wood does in the National League–I’m betting that he hits more HR’s this year than our current shortstop………

Off day today so the floor is yours……

The Flap Fantasy Baseball Standings (Pawlie’s lead grows to a mind blowing 20.5 pts and Berra’s Bombers drops to an unthinkably low score of 24 despite that bomb from Molina 🙂  Seriously, how can anyone NOT love all things Molina??)

SF played some of its best ball all year on the road at AZ and Colo. I’d expect nothing less vs. some of the bottom feeders/weaker pitching staffs. And you have to factor in all the resident hoopla that comes with the defending champs come in to town, anywhere, and the residual affects.
Thx to Twin for the cont’d updates on prospects…obviously there are holes in the LU that are going to need to be addressed at certain positions within the next year or two. The injuries to Torres and Sanchez last season and this concern me too. I’d be interested to see how some of these minor league guys progress, not just offensively but defensively as well…do the middle IFs have range and accurate arms? Belt has playing LF as I understand and I wonder how that’s going.

I don’t usually forward these emails on but it’s an off day– if you’re bored, check this out:
    Craig,

Hi. This is Chris Jaffe with The Hardball Times and I’ve got a new Giants-related historical bit up that you and your readers might like.

Today is the Silver Anniversary of one of the most unlikely (and possibly most infuriating) homers the Giants ever allowed. On APril 25, 1986 Padre reliever Craig Lefferts became the only pitcher since the 1960s to hit a walk-off homer, when he went deep against Greg Minton. That’s right, the guy who never allowed any homers – that Minton.

At any rate, after discussing that, the article gives a series of “day-versaries” (events which happened X-thousand days ago) and anniversaries, some of the more interesting ones involved the Giants. For example, on this day in 1969, Giant Jack Hiatt, who normally couldn’t hit worth a like – bashed out 2 HR & 7 RBIs. Forty years ago today, Juan Marichal lost his 100th game, which would be unremarkable except that he’s one of only 4 men in the last 90 years to win 200 before losing 100.

At any rate, if you’re interested, here’s the piece:
    http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/blog_article/silver-anniversary-of-one-of-baseballs-most-incredible-homers/

    Thanks

    Chris Jaffe

Rowand is making a case to at least get SOME interest in a trade . . .

Philly can’t be happy with Ibanaez hitting a buck 87. Maybe they want Row Row back (with a truckload of cash) for Carlos Rivero, a fair to middling SS prospect . . .

The Giants seem to usually have trouble with the Pirates, despite their perennial suckage. Maybe they go out and eat to many of those Primanti Bros. sandwiches. Anyway, for SF, going to the Steel City is not a necessarily good Rx to break out of a minor skid. Let’s hope this year is different…

    • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on April 25, 2011 at 12:52 pm

They’re 4-2 against the Bucs each of the last two years, 2-1 and 1-2 on the road. The relevant point is that no team can be overlooked.

Leash on the Dodgers: anything more than lunch money… “In seizing control of the franchise, MLB told the Dodgers that any expenditure of $5,000 or more would have to be approved.”

Schieffer hired by MLB to run Dodgers
    http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/04/25/sports/s121833D49.DTL

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 25, 2011 at 1:09 pm

This guy Schieffer has to somehow be a close bud of the Budster. That seems to be his MO in a lot of things he does. I wonder where baseball would be now if Giammatti had lived. The owners probably would have fired him anyway — too much a purist. I can’t fathom how there is talk today that this extra WC team starting in 2012 might add nothing but a one game playoff. That is nonsense. Two WCs could have a 10 win discrepancy, yet a one game roll of the dice between them decides it? There is no point in that, other than one extra TV game and the ad revenue. Or, I guess that is the point. Whatever form is proposed, the extra WC team idea is horrible…

Saint Giamatti was a heavy smoker (thus the early fatal heart attack) and a rabid Red Sox fan. He moved quickly from NL Pres. to Commish in large part because the owners liked the way he crushed unions when he ran Yale. Nonetheless, he was committed to taking action to get more African Americans into mlb coaching and managing positions. He was an expert on Spenser — and, not surprisingly, I suppose, lived his life like a guy who enjoyed slaying dragons. Not your usual academic. There’s no way to know how things would’ve turned out with him as Commish through the 90s, except to say it would’ve been a lot better than with Selig.

NYT: “A federal judge gave professional football players a significant victory Monday, granting an injunction to stop the N.F.L.’s six-week lockout Monday. Judge Susan Richard Nelson of United States District Court did not stay her decision, sending the N.F.L scrambling to seek a stay from the Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit to prevent the league from having to open for business immediately.

“If the stay is not granted, the N.F.L. will have to put rules in place allowing players to return to work and free agency to open within days, creating a flurry of activity similar to the normal operations of an off-season. Teams will be allowed to hold workouts with players, players will be permitted to meet with trainers to rehabilitate injuries and coaches to study game film.”

I’ve got 4 Pirates on my various fantasy teams so I’m watching that game right now. Bowker just PH for the pitcher and lined a base hit ti right field. He looks a little bigger, maybe he’s hitting the weights harder. He’s got a swing and miss follow thru that reminds me of Rowand, only left handed. The dude better get it going or he’s gonna be selling refrigerators at Sears next year……

  20. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 25, 2011 at 6:32 pm

Flav, I feel the same way about Pedro Alvarez who is on my other FL team . . . Fucker don’t get it together quick, he can join Bowker at Sears, except with a demotion to vacuum cleaners.

  21. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 25, 2011 at 6:37 pm

I actually picked Alrarez up off the WW–had to, that’s an 8th round draft pick in a 12 team league. He’s on my bench but I like him and think he still hits 30 bombs this year. I also picked up Wood on a flier. He could use a change of scenery and he’s going to play SS which I love…….
If you’ve never seen Todd Coffey run in from the bullpen you should catch his act. He runs as fast as Craig Lefferts (or tries to run as fast as Craig Lefferts) but he’s got a rack on him that would make Benjie Molina look like nothing more than an A-cup. This guy has got c-cup titties and he’s running as hard as he can run to the pitching mound. It is pure gold comedy………

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 25, 2011 at 6:51 pm

OK, question for you Flav . . . Everything I read, says to hold onto Alvarez. However, Delmon Young is available on the Waiver Wire in my other FL . . . He is rated 90 preseason vs. Alvarez’s 85, but is somewhat injured (ribs). Would you retain Alvarez (even though the Hurdle sounds like he is only going to play him against lefties going forward) or Young?

      You make the call (LOL)?

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 25, 2011 at 6:55 pm

Hurdle is full of shit, he’s not just going to play him against lefties. Alvarez is one of their top prospects and Wood is going to play SS since they have no one else there. He played 3rd tonight just to ease him into his first game, i think.
I loath rib cage area injuries. Young played over his head last year.
Keep Alvarez and reap the benefits this Summer……..

Tales of a White Hot Fantasy –
no, really, I am having fun at this. As I knew I would. But being it is so obvious I am the cellar dweller I must defend myself, a bit:

And this is what I’ve learned so far:
1 the draft is a lot more important than some make it out to be, so be ready.
2 there are no second chances: have a plan and do it everyday; hesitation is death.
3 even in free leagues winning is everything: it’s every manager for itself.
4 you get no points for defence, clubhouse karma, leadership or experience in these leagues
5 It should be impossible to be last in every scoring cataory, but your not looking at it from here!
6 there are a lot of teams, news, players and matchups out there and while keeping track of it all you will see mlbaseball, teams and players from a whole new angle.
    YEAH! and 2 my defense?
At the beginning of the season I was at or near the top in several (projected) scoring categories and doing the math had me (projected, again) near 90 points for the season and then the injuries hit.
I have 4 of the ‘top 100’ players and 3 have been on the injury list nearly all season, so far. I had to let Jason Bay go to put in someone that was playing!
My pitching hasn’t escaped the injury list, either. today I have 4 of the top 50 pitchers and 2 are on the DL. One after breaking a rib playing pickup basketball in the offseason. that’s something Flavor would do, only he’d be a fielder and play through the pain. 🙂

Contraire Flav . . . I picked up Kuo a couple of days ago, knowing that Broxton would BLOW . . . He did and Kuo comes off the DL this Friday. If he can be half the pitcher he was when he replaced Broxton late last year, then all’s good.

Ed, as Flav said – you rock . . . Hang in there. It’s only April and God Bless Pawlie, who might just hold onto 1st place. However, no one is going to hand him the Flap Trophy over our collective dead bodies as long as Aurilia’s bobble head is hanging by a thread to his ceramic torso.
