A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Dead Men Walking To New York

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 3, 2011

It doesn’t get much bleaker than this. My days of basking have been replaced with game long cursing. It’s tough to wrap your brain around this type of offensive failure. I agree with many, when Torres returns Rowand has to stay in the line up. I doubt he’ll hit for much longer but if we could squeeze a few more weeks out of him before his slide back to mediocrity that would give Belt a little more time to keep crushing the ball down in Fresno. It would also give The Bat some time to clear his head on the bench. Once Rowand starts rolling balls to the shortstop again Bochy can either bring Belt up to play LF or give The Bat one more go at it.

When I look at Burrell and Tejada I see two guys slumping but I view them differently. Tejada’s slide could be seen in many different underlying saber numbers that I highlighted last Winter so this isn’t really a surprise to me. Burrell’s numbers, excluding one month last year, were still strong and not indicative of a guy who was washed up. Therefore I see this more as one of his normal career slumps. But, it’s also quite possible that Burrell is done, too.

Unfortunately we can’t ditch Tejada as easily as we could let go of The Bat right now. We simply don’t have anyone else who can play third base every day. And I hope Baggs was kidding about the Giants acquiring Jack Wilson from the Mariners. I’ve never understood why anyone likes him. He can’t hit. At all. And he’s on the downside of a very pedestrian career as it is. What would be the point of bringing Tejada 2.0 with even less power into the mix??????

The Flap Fantasy Baseball Standings

(kinda a slow day with an incomplete schedule playing. DIRT and DENNIS were the big movers while Pawlie dipped below the hundo mark for the first time. We’ll see if that psychological blow affects him at all)

I also have to give a tip of my cap to Twin on the Burriss fielding blunder that Miller said was reminiscent of his performance in spring training.

Much needed win tonight. Good job, Huff. After scuffling all night, he gets the bomb.

Just an awesome game. I started out listening to it on the radio as I ran errands and got back home. I cursed a pox on them for that 9th inning bullshit. And then Huff gets major redemption and Wilson goes pretty much torture free in the 10th.
Great win but really an unbelievable game to take in regardless of the outcome…..

Great to see the Giants fans from NY getting into it. Frustrating watching the middle of the order struggle, but all in all an entertaining game. Now they should win the series tomorrow behind Tim.

Novelists and other fiction writers would not have touched this game scenario with a ten foot dildo. Too unreal to be believed. Top of the 9th was a study. Pair of speedsters on base, scoring position, even ~ a couple Giants go down (no names) and then the Mets walk Curly Joe with two outs to load the bases for Buster, last year’s ROY, who promptly flubs it. Javier Lopez works his way through the heart of the Mets order to go into extra innings. So who comes up but flailing and failing Huff n Puff who promptly reverts to form as Huff the Magic Dragon. Believe me. No Hollywood script editor would touch that one.

Giants ended up scoring three more runs tonight than in four futile days in Washington. Key hit was by Ryan Vogelsong. Though victimized by the longball and by walks when he was on the mound, the Little Birdie that Could was the guy who came through in an improbable at bat. The Speed Weapon should have won the game in the 9th but it didn’t work out that way. Comic Relief had another trick up his sleeve.

This could be the start of something. In the recent Baggarly interview, Huff owned to having the coldest bat on the team, not even being able to remember his last hit. Huff awakens and my bet is that the whole team will start to hit. Funny thing, intuition, even after the Mutts swiped the lead back on the Ike Davis homer, i did not have that sinking “gonna lose” feeling. In fact, this one felt like a winner throughout. Maybe the return of Vogelsong to a Giants uniform is a bit of a good luck charm. Who would have thunk it in those early innings?

Willie Davis was a cool player too, faster than wills. I think he also made 3 errors in a world series game vs. Orioles playing CF too.
but I stole my nickname from the hurdler willie davenport. they asked him what the “d” stood for and he said, “Dangerous.”
Ethier is another guy beane gave away (and there’s a few of them) to an NL west team…coincidence?

  38. willied's avatar willied said, on May 3, 2011 at 8:59 pm

I realize the game is played differently today (first base coaches have stopwatches to time the release?), but the base stealers of yore would have made posey throw them out. Wills, brock, moreno, leflore, rickey, etc. these guys got on, they went. If Reyes doesn’t want to run to get into scoring position with two outs because he’s afraid of something, fuck him and his FA ass.

  39. SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on May 3, 2011 at 9:05 pm

Someone gave me a bat when I was a kid with Willie Davis’ name on it. I didn’t want to like it because he was a Dodger, but at the same time he was such a cool player I kind of took a liking to the bat. I used to love those autographed bats. I had Al Kaline, Joe Rudi (one of those green ones from bat day in Oakland), Chris Speier and others. I actually still have the Rudi bat here along with a sweet little Ralph Kiner one that belonged to one of my older brothers.
