A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

A Historic Homestand

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 13, 2011

No one seemed too interested in commenting on it when I noted that I was ASTOUNDED that the Giants scored 18 runs in 6 games and yet won all 6 games. Then at ESPN this morning, the Elias Sports Guys said that the Giants are the first team in MLB HISTORY to sweep a home stand of 6 games or more without scoring more than 4 runs in any of the games. Something tells me that if Elias dug a little deeper into those last 6 games they’d find some other MLB *firsts*. Assuming that we are going to start scoring runs at some point this year, I can’t see us doing anything BUT winning this division by 8-10 games. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if the Giants are the first major league team to ever win a game without scoring a run. Not sure how that would happen, but this crew would probably figger out a way to do it…….

OK, out from LurkerVille. I find myself thinking about those horrendous ’07 and ’08 lineups, simply to remind myself how far we have come. The Bocock/Guillen/Ortmeier lineup had me so frustrated that I joined the Splash as “NoTalent” and eventually found my way here (albeit mostly as a lurker). That ’08 team averaged 3.95 runs a game. This team will be just fine.

It’s been a great couple weeks of basking. Wife and I made it to NYC to catch the Huff homer game … the one that triggered the current turnaround and made me proud of the vocal Giants fan contingent. Then flew down to New Orleans for Jazz Fast rockin the Giants gear and got more stranger high fives and good vibes than I would at AT&T. Probably high-fived Bozo without even knowing it. Now off to Chicago (for family-related stuff) but will try and catch Sunday’s game at Wrigley.

Oh and it’s no coincidence that I’m posting as I rise to 3rd in the Flap. Pawlie’s going down.

Keep the good vibes going Yash . . . I’ve been in the SF bay area for the last week and a half, attended 2 games which they won (and plan on attending at least one game they have with the A’s).

By the by, exhaust yourself taking down No Whitey and Pawlie . . . you’ll be easy pickin’s for me when I swoop in 😉

Not much said here on Nate, other than his picture and POG I mean, but I sure hope he has a great year and wins a job in right field. His game was made for our quirky right field wall and he could use some bumps to get him confidence in the box. I’m still surprised he was kept as long as he has given the breaks, but the Giants recognized his potential. I’m betting this team looks quite a bit different by August, at least in our starting lineup.

two years in a row he has blamed late season suckitude on being hurt. Soem guys the more you play them, the more you see why they are not full time starters, which is what has happened two years in a row.
Now he says he is healthy, so see what happens. He could win RF if he keeps avg. up and shows better discipline and ability to use all fields at the plate, and push ross to LF if he shows better than rowand and burrell. Better hurry, tho.
And no more missed cutoffs or throwing to the wrong base.

      • Robbie's avatar Robbie said, on May 13, 2011 at 8:58 am

No question there should be some solid competition for starts, and it’s nice to have a few options. Nate should be up to the challenge, but last year’s woes won’t play well if he starts faltering for long stretches and makes dumb errors. I just don’t see Burrelll starting for very long. Belt will have to go through what the rest are going through and learn to hit major league pitching. Good problems I’m thinking.

Robbie, that would mean Nate would have to do some great things, Cody is cemented in WS lore with the fans. Granted the fans want to see wins, but until Cody faulters I think Nate is behind him.

    • Robbie's avatar Robbie said, on May 13, 2011 at 8:59 am

Agreed, but I don’t see Cody faltering and I sure hope he stays healthy. I do see Burrell cooling off and his defense is not up to the others.

  6. willied's avatar willied said, on May 13, 2011 at 8:12 am

You can win those 6 if you only allow 10 runs total, and have two shutouts.
Intersting trip…after three in the windy (blowing out or in?) two return trips to mile high and smogville.
good for nate. having a great day in the field and at the plate gives bochy and the guys sitting out something to think about. There aren’t any days off unitl after next weekend, so everyone should get some ABs and a shot to show what they can do…including left side of IF.
winning one run games is supposed to be a cyclical thing (good one year, not so good the next) but it has to be a tremendous confidence builder. After losing the first two to LA, SF is 12-1…last year total 28-24. Nice.

In today’s electronic world, there is some kind of obscure record set every game. What’s stupid is turning a positive into a negative. Winning games while not hitting is GREAT news..I see that Flavor is starting to figger that out..
Cody has a little more going for him than the postseason- great to see Nate contribute but he ain’t taking Cody’s job. Could see more of Ross in left and Nate in right, though. Belt/Torres/Ross is the eventual OF. Nate is a role player.

Zito out another 3-4 weeks. The medicos are being too aggressive, taking his owwie too lightly, I’m afraid. He needs, at minimum, another 6 weeks of baseball-related activities followed by a 2-3 week regimen of advanced kinesio-therapy and a 5-6 re-evaluation period. Followed by a 4-week rest, then 6-weeks of intensive re-training to get those meta-muscular groups in order. Foot injuries such as his really need to be taken seriously!

“Barry Zito threw off a mound Wednesday for the first time since he sprained his right foot in Arizona on April 16. Manager Bruce Bochy said Zito is roughly three to four weeks from returning.”

If he stays healthy he’ll contribute but let’s not kid ourselves here. Dude has been out of options for what 2 years now? Otherwise he would have been on the Shame Train to Fresneck a while ago. That said, I think even the most doomer amoungst us want to see anyone in an SF uniform do well and Nate is making his case on the field which is all you can ask.

Misunderstood, though, is the importance of his OBP. If he could run it would be of more value.
Because OBP does not take into account how fast or slow a baseball player is it is an overrated statistic, certainly for middle of the order hitters where slugging percentage is more important.

This little cluster of pitchers here in SF over the last few years has had their poise tested. Seems like any little struggle is exaggerated because some expect every youngster to be like Tim. Also, it seems like the more adversity each one has faced, the stronger it has made them. Cain was tested more than anyone, I’m guessing, by lack of offensive support, and he now seems like a sage. They all impress me every time I see them. What an amazing rotation.

The facts, nimrod, are that he regularly gives up big innings due to losing his poise…your attempts to deny that point up YOUR agenda.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 13, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Can you not READ, or are you totally clouded by your making points on your agenda? I said he “loses his cool”. FYI, that’s the same as losing poise. That’s what kids his age tend to do when they face adversity…

      • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 13, 2011 at 1:04 pm

You excuse it because he’s a non-Gomez. The Latins are “head cases”, Non-Gomezes are “just kids”..

I don’t kiss your ass on this blog, so I’m a racist — again.
Only this time, it’s the Latins.

Nice drag bunt hit by Torres. Should do that more often. Just the ticket to get something started here…

    Huff punches the ticket.

  59. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 13, 2011 at 12:59 pm

We’ll see how it impacts his extra base hits ,he had 67 last year, most on the team. He has done it well this year-I’ve seen 3.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 13, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Wow, cool video. Wonder if that would be a violation of his contract as a dangerous activity? He lived, so I guess nobody cares…

Sooner or later Madison will get over his wont towards the Bumfuck inning. When he does, maybe by his 22nd birthday in August, look out league. Torres and Huff are doing a nice tango today. Too bad they are not getting much support, particularly from the bottom of the lineup. Huff had a false dawn in picking up his hitting on the trip to Noo Yawk. Maybe this time he has overcome the barrier and will be good to go.

And the sooner our fat little Gomez comes back the better. I miss that Gomez the most.

Bumgarner at 21, wobbled early, then found his “poise”, his “cool”, and gave up 3 runs in 6 frames today. Dirrty at 28 and with over a 100 more MLB appearances, was arguably more wobbly his last start with more walks, ultimately gave up 3 in 6, too, and was given lots of credit here and elsewhere for gutting it out and keeping the team in the game. At risk of being called a racist, I will give Bum the same credit here…

    • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 13, 2011 at 1:50 pm

Let’s see your post giving Sanchez any credit. Maybe you did but I don’t remember it..And of course I give MadBum credit. But the blame was not unfair- Snarkklefuck actually claimed that criticism of Lincecum’s terrible August was unfair.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 13, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Yeah, I did say it was unfair. And it was. I say it again. You’d think he had earned no capital, the way he got skewered far beyond what was reasonable. As for Sanchez, I didn’t say anything about his last performance, one way or the other. Now, after the facts turn out, an “of course” congrats to Bum after you raked him and me early. Bogus…

Now, you tell me, if I have a day off during the baseball season, where do you think I’ll spend it? The ballpark. I still love it. Always have, always will.
