Ugly Loss in Chicago

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 14, 2011

Man, 14 strikeouts? F-O-U-R-T-E-E-N???? Remember when Fontenot was our hitting savior? That was last week right? He’s hitting .206 right now. And Miggy Te-nada has a .501 OPS. That’s pretty hard to score that low. I think you get three or four hundred OPS points just for putting on your uniform right…..

Several of you noticed Torres limping around the bases yesterday but I wasn’t able to find any follow up with that from any of our crack local scribes. I hope he’s ok……

Voggy goes tonight. National audience under the lights at Wrigley. As much as I felt like he would pitch well in his last home start I have the opposite feel tonight. If we throw a bunch of 0-4’s up there, tonight’s game will get ugly…….

Yes, but Miggy’s fly has been down for weeks
    ===========================================
At least he stood up after the game and admitted he sucked. That counts for something.

bum did too, which also accounts for something. Walking the 8 and 9 guys in the order is one thing, but giving up two run scoring hits afterward is quite another. Same thing happened in the game he lost after the Tejada error. T got the blame…Bum’s the one with the ball in hands and he couldn’t get guys out before allowing deciding runs to come in.
Hopefully this is the realization the game ain’t that easy, and it takes a lot of concentration and focus on honing your skills and your emotions, in order to have continued success at this level.
And one more reason you absolutely cannot trade Sanchez…or as James puts it, “the wrong Sanchez.”

You know we’re gonna end up with 5-7 on this road trip, don’t ‘cha? Cubs suck at home; Rox and LA are only 1 over .500 at home — not the “home dominance” a team should have. 1/3 of LA’s roster is on the DL now. They’re on a “streak of 3” — against hapless Pittsburgh and Arizona. Rox were not impressive against SD last night, despite the final score. This will be a winning trip … put me down for 5. 🙂

From Baggs: “Andres Torres was checked briefly after beating out a bunt single in the fifth inning but was fine, Bochy said. Torres is 7 for 15 over his past four games, but Bochy didn’t want to push him so soon after coming off the disabled list. Torres will rest Saturday.”

Who knows what to expect from V-Song, but if they “throw a bunch of 0-4’s” against Doug Davis, they really are offensively challenged.

Someone yesterday tried to liken MadBum to Sanchez- Jonathan loses focus, Madision loses his cool-there is a huge difference. For one- losing your focus won’t earn you a suspension. MadBum is a hot head and he has to overcome it…
Doug Davis is a Major League pitcher, he’s won 90 games up here. He’s not, as Splasher LiveFree would say: “career garbage”. He’s on the downside of his career but he’s a crafty lefty. He’s capable of beating any team and has topped 27 of ’em. Trashing the opposing pitcher as a way of trashing the Giants is BS…this is hardly “advantage SF” in this match up…

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on May 14, 2011 at 9:38 am

OK, point taken. The guy’s a pro and he’ll likely be jacked up for his Cubs debut and his first start since having elbow surgery. Davis is 5-8 with a 4.72 ERA vs. SF, so the Giants do have a pretty good history there.

      • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 14, 2011 at 10:20 am

That really wasn’t for you, Mac. A couple of idiots on the Splash were doing the Cy Young routine about Dempster.Slow start but the fucker won 43 games the last three years…Davis is a guy they *should* handle but you don’t hang around as long as he has if you can’t pitch a little.

Davis has handled us in the past, I seem to remember him dominating us when he was with AZ at a game I went to a few years ago. But, career wise, we hit him well. He’s had a ton of physical problems, I think he had cancer a few years ago and last year had a heart problem and then finally got shut down with an elbow problem. This is his first start of the year and you can tell how bad the CUbs SP is if they have to turn to this dude. He’s at the end of his career. A patient team would probably bypass his floaty corner pitchers 6 inches off the plate and then hammer him when he has to come in. But I think we all know that’s unlikely to happen tonight. Could get ugly, Cubs 8 Giants 0…..

I would like a mathematical explanation of “5 times less expensive.”
      ——–
When ending a sentence with a quotation mark, does the period go before or after it?
      ——–
What has Runzler been clocking on the gun? Has he lost velocity?
Wasn’t he a consistent high 90’s guy when he burst on the scene in 2009?

      • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on May 14, 2011 at 11:08 am

Period inside the quotation marks. Commas, too.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 14, 2011 at 11:13 am

I can’t help you on the math question Loo (I have 3 times the required university credits for a BA, but refused to attend any type of requisite math class). Also, can’t help you with the Runzler question. However, in regard to quotation marks, this is what applies:

Whenever we have to use a question mark or an exclamation point with a sentence that ends in a quotation, we follow the dictates of logic in determining where the question mark or exclamation point goes. If it is part of the quotation itself, we put it inside the quotation marks, and if it governs the sentence as a whole but not the material being quoted, we put it outside the quotation marks.

. . . Wait Loo, not done yet.

When it comes to commas and periods, though, logic doesn’t enter into the equation, at least not in the United States. Universal American usage places commas and periods inside the quotation marks, regardless of logic.

The only exception is when that last little item enclosed in quotation marks is just a letter or a number, in which case the period or comma will go outside the closing quotation marks.

Of course Loo, if another set of words or a parenthetical citation gets between the quoted material and the end of a sentence, then the comma or period will follow the intervening element.

Now, keep in mind that this comma and period inside the quotation marks business is strictly American usage. The British don’t do it that way. They are inclined to place commas and periods logically rather than conventionally, depending on whether the punctuation belongs to the quotation or to the sentence that contains the quotation, just as we do with question marks and exclamation points. But even more important is the matter of consistency. If we try to force international students to adopt the American style, they will end up mixing the two styles, sometimes placing commas and periods inside, sometimes outside quotation marks. It is far better for them to continue using the British style than to incongruously blend the two. Anyway, the point is that if you are an American, you need to keep your commas and periods inside your closing quotation marks, where they belong.

Are you glad you asked Loo?

By the by, you may want to check this out with Pawlie. Ha.

Runzler has hit 97 this year, that’s as high as he’s
ever been. Velocity is not his problem. Location and maybe confidence..
Minor leaugue notes: Crawford 4 for 4 in third game back at SJ, they’ll move him up to Richmond or Fresno quick. Gary Brown still blazing, he be a fast tracker. Tommy Joseph cooled off big time. Dominguez has 8 HR, they need to find out if he can hit adults. If he makes it at all, looks lke 30 HR, .220, 200 K… Baggs says Wheeler is looking real good
Kid pitching real well in relief: Hector Correa, who they got for Paulino
    http://tinyurl.com/66u8tj4
Nothing much to speak of in Richmond, just the lefty Surkamp and maybe Verdugo. Culberson is disappointing. OPS under 7, 1 HR.
Fresno? Well, there’s Belt, that Brandon kid, and…that’s it. Edlefsen took a dump, Kroon is hardly blowing ’em away, Gillaspie is underwhelming.Neal isn’t even starting and he’s not hurt ( according to a Bleacher Report piece)
Crawford might be here if he hits even a little and Miggy doesn’t. Belt will be back soon. Outside chance on Surkamp if Zito’s injury lingers and Vogey reverts to form

Was feeling more and more uneasy as the one-run win after one-run victory streak continued through the homestand. Perhaps i have consulted the I-Ching too often not to be concerned about balance. Without the stats handy and trusting that my memory glands haven’t sagged too much, i seem to recall that SF opponents totaled ten runs during that stand and that the Giants never scored more than four in any of those games.

Yesterday’s blowout in Chi-town restored the balance in one swell foop. Not only did the Cubbies score more runs in one game than Colorado and Arizona managed in 6; but the Giants amassed four against Chicago pitching including a genuine, honest to goodness home run.

So now that the balance thing has pretty much balanced out it’s time for Vogelsong to compose a sweet tune on the mound while Giants hitters pick it up against Doug Davis and company to balance the series at 1-1.

Would .650 be unrealistic? I don’t think so. It’s funny, his fate is probably related to what DeRosa does. If DeRosa is done, Miggy probably gets another month. If he rakes and Miggy keeps hitting at the “Levi Jeans Mendoza OPS Line” then Miggy probably heads to the bench with more starts for Font at SS and deRosa manning third till Pablo gets back……

Lisening to the Giant radio-cast……I don’t think I’ve ever heard announcers in any sport talk so much about the weather. The guys who did the Ice Bowl complained less….

Is “huge pussy” more insulting than “little pussy?”

Dont any of you chumps ever forget how important mike quade was to the giants winning the WS last year. If he doesn’t light the fire for the Cubs last year and take down the Pads (when Cubs had nothing to play for) San Diego probably wins the division….think about the random chain of events: if Pinella’s mom does take ill and he doesn’t quit on the Cubs, Quade never gets a shot and the Cubs probably sleepwalk through Sept. Random things….

Every inning Vogelsong guts out a tough one and gets a DP or some such to get out of it, the more I wonder why Zito should not re-sprain that foot.
Tejada needs to start generating reasons for why he should play much, if at all, once Panda comes back. He’s bad in the field, worse at the plate, not a good combo.
Huff is still friggin lost at the plate, regardless of the opposing hurler….

  66. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on May 14, 2011 at 5:43 pm
