A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Turning the Page/Bochy Bashers/Vin Mazzaro…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 17, 2011

I thought that MacDog nailed it at the end of the last thread. No matter what you though of that play, Tim’s bad throw took the possibility of the double play out of the equation. I thought (and still think) that was a catchable ball. But it really had no bearing on the outcome of the game. Tim was terrible and I would also agree with Macdog that I haven’t seen Tim lose his composure like that since…..maybe the time he got pissed off at the Rockies for the “humidified” balls. But he was really more irritated than anything else and he seemed to feed off it that game. Last night, he fell apart…….

And with Dirrrrrty going tonight, I would be happy if he could just walk less than Tim did last night. I’ll take that and hope we have our hitting shoes on…..

For the Bochy detractors (and they were all over the airwaves last night and this morning): Are you serious? Calling out Bochy for leaving Tim in is uncalled for. The same people who are questioning his decision to leave him in to face CarGo need to also stand up and say they had complete faith in Jeremy Freaking Affeldt to get him out. Affeldt? He’s been horrendous lately. And Tim didn’t pitch that badly in that inning, with a good throw he already out of it with the double play. And the ball Tulo hit was almost caught by Franchez. It’s idiotic to rail on Bochy for taking Tim out to early (which we hear all the time) and then rail on him when he leaves him in a hitter too long….

And to Vin Mazzaro: Dude, I feel for you. The manager of the Royals (who is it? Yost?) should be disciplined for leaving him in the game that long. Letting him throw 78 pitches in 2 innings could easily have caused him to injure his arm (not to mention what 14 ER’s did to him psychologically) and then promptly optioning him to AAA shows how much they care about the arms of their pitchers. If I’m a KC pitcher I don’t trust one freaking person in the Royals organization, at any level, this morning…

Not turning the double play had no effect on the outcome of the game? ¿Que? No outs and 2 on is a little worse than 2 outs and none on. Erase the 3 run homer, and it’s tied. They ain’t down by 3. They even get one out there, the damage isn’t so bad.

1st place? Yeah, baby . . . I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth . . . It likely won’t last, but hey. . . .

I’m tired of hearing abuot KC’s great future. The pundits went from talking about how great the prospects are in the KC farm system, to talking about how great the KC farm system is in general. Huh? If you’re drafting in the top 5 every year for 20 years, you should have a few good prospects once in a while. I would say that’s evidence that KC has a LOUSY farm system. Why isn’t there more to show for those 20 years?

yeah, I could have worded that differently. I guess I just meant that so many things happened AFTER that to actually lose the game for us. But you’re right, if he turns the DP we’re out of the inning.

Top 10 reasons Colorado has no chance to realistically make the playoffs this year:

    1. Bullpen might as well be called “Gas Can” brigade. For example, In relief of starter Clayton Mortensen, Tracy used every relief pitcher he believes in, five in all. Franklin Morales and Felipe Paulino may be released because they have been ineffective. However, Morales and Paulino are out of options, so the GM can’t send them down to work out their issues. Both have live arms, so another team might take a shot, but O’Dowd can’t wait too long or he’ll burn out the rest of his bullpen.

    2. Todd Helton is frickin’ Methuselah and will fade. Right now, he is essentially carrying the club. By the All Star break, he will be on the DL for some back related injury or will have gone back to the Helton of the last few years. In other words, a nobody.

    3. The dirty secret about Cargo that everyone seems to forget – his home/away splits were 180 degrees opposite each other last year. Specifically, he struggles on the road. Unlike Matt Holiday, Cargo doesn’t hit on the road . . . and this year, he hasn’t hit at home either (albeit, he has started to heat up). Regardless, he is batting .230 right now.

    4. Gold glove shortstop is a similar story . . . He is batting .250 and yes, he is a very streaky hitter. Until Cargo and Tulo get their act together, the Rockies will flounder.

    5. Third base is an abyss . . . They’ve just about given up on Ian Stewart, who’s new address is their Colorado Springs triple AAA affiliate. Wigginton was starting to come around until he went on the DL and Lopez is still trying to discover the stroke that made him money while with Seattle in 2009 . . . might as well be a century ago.

    6. They can’t bunt. Two players were asked to lay down simple sacrifice bunts. Dexter Fowler failed and Alfredo Amezaga failed. Fowler tried to bunt again later, this time not showing it early, and couldn’t get it down then either. He erased his failure to sacrifice in the fifth with a smash through third baseman Mark DeRosa, but that doesn’t change the fact that the Rockies’ leadoff man cannot lay down a bunt on a bet.

    7. Fowler should be leading the league in steals, but he is an idiot. For example, last night Fowler added two baserunning gaffes. Lincecum picked him off in the first when he broke too soon on a stolen base attempt. And catcher Jose Morales was forced to run into an out at the plate when Fowler chugged into third in the sixth without noticing Morales was still there. Duh!

    8. Related to number 7., Fowler was also caught in a rundown on a botched hit-and-run in the eighth, but it wasn’t clear whether he, batter Jonathan Herrera, third-base coach Rich Dauer or Tracy was responsible. In any case, the man who covers ground in the outfield like a gazelle is now 2-for-7 in stolen base attempts.

    9. Tracy is an idiot with his managerial moves. I think Flav has covered this area, along with Twin. See number 8., i.e., it’s quite possible that Tracy was responsible for that fiasco play.

    10. Ace of their staff has not won a game this year.

    Honorable Mention:

    1. They are the fucking Rockies, which tells you all you need to know. This is the team that for approximately 9 years, kept their lone 1995 “Wild Card Championship” banner (yes, it said Championship) in right field, until fans complained about it being so embarrassing to the city of Denver, that ownership finally removed it.

    2. They play at Cape Coors, which is a launching pad by any other name, regardless of humidors/dead balls used.

    3. Fans are “fair weathered” and only support their team when they are winning. Exhibit A is the Denver Post newspaper – compare letters to the editor, columnists, and sports writers of their paper and the Chronicle. Typically, they get a couple of dozen people writing in with comments about the team . . . The Gate gets hundreds.

    4. Ownership is cheap . . . Monforts have barely supported the team with free agent resources to supplement home grown talent. However, to their credit, they did retain Tulo and Cargo with big contracts last year.

    5. Dinger is the official mascot of the Colorado Rockies. He is an anthropomorphic purple triceratops. Almost as bad a decision as having that fucking crab as our mascot.

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on May 17, 2011 at 8:57 am

For all of you guys that have kids (anyone?), Dinger is a dead ringer for Baby Bop of Barney and Friends fame . . .

When the play happened, Miller said right away that Lincecum threw it behind Tejada. Then he said when he caught it (one hopper, remember) no one was at 2B, then repeated that Lincecum threw it behind him.
As cargo came up, Miller said Lincecum had only retired one batter the whole inning, with the Rox stupid baserunning accounting for the other out…the sequence goes HR, single, error, K, single, single up to then. I’m sure he’d have been pissed if bochy had taken him out at that point.
After the HR, Fleming mentioned lack of trust in Affeldt, who he figured was warming up to face a LH, cargo. I don’t have a big issue with bochy leaving him in to try and get out of it, but since it didn’t work, that will stay in the back of his mind. I don’t recall any trips to the mound that inning by rags, either. But the meltdown is all on Tim, earned runs or not.
The other play that bugged me was the GIDP by Huff. SF got 3 runners on, before and after Huff, and forced pitching change, but couldn’t score that inning when it looked like Rox pen was falling apart.

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on May 17, 2011 at 8:46 am

Huff was a rally-killer last night, and he didn’t get anything airborne into that thin air.

  6. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on May 17, 2011 at 9:06 am

Zooms: Total concurrence. Was starting to feel i was nothing but a broken record harping on Huff needing to be dropped in the lineup. Yes, Bochy needs to keep him playing, partly because he is a far better hitter than he has shown so far this year and partly because of that kind contract. But if someone else had been there amidst the meat of the order the pair of gdp’s may not have happened.

Drop Huff to 7th. Yes, i know, the sequence of Huff, Tejada and the pitcher may not be too intimidating ~ usually a get out of jail free card for the opposing pitcher ~ but a more reliable middle of the L.U. might start producing. As i’ve noted in previous harps on this subject, Huff can be restored to the middle once he has clearly reverted to form.

  9. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 17, 2011 at 9:14 am

There’s zero guarantee that they even get an out if Tejada catches it- every fucking replay shows that Tim threw it behind him. As usual, Willie has the proper take- it’s all on Tim. Interesting that Tim fingers Miggy and Bochy then fingers DeRosa on another play- that’s not a good thing.I understand that they want to coddle their meal ticket, but you don’t throw DeRosa under the bus, Bruce- bad form. And we SHOULD be seeing an apology from Lincecum…
Both beat writers say Bochy should have gone to Affeldt at 4-4, BTW. I disagree with them, Bochy, AND Flavor- you walk Gonzales and pitch to Tulip. Righty-Righty and force at any base-no brainer.
Anyway, Dirty hasn’t given up 7 in two years, let’s hope Tim didn’t open the floodgates..

    • willied's avatar willied said, on May 17, 2011 at 9:36 am

I was listening on the radio so I didn’t see the inning, but it surprised me no one went out to talk to him, either rags or bochy. Besides the obvious take a deep breath approach, you can go over what you want to do, who you’d rather pitch to, what’s working for you right now against what hitter, etc.
Not sure if that’s Posey’s job, or if he’s afraid going out there would only rile the Kid more. Could certainly have pitched around cargo as you say and gone after tulo instead.

  10. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 17, 2011 at 9:15 am

I’ve ragged on Bochy plenty last year and before. But, he was gold during the playoffs. No way I rip on him for leaving Timmeh in to face CarGo. Yeah, Lincecum was having a very bad outing in many ways, and so was the team behind him, but he must have put Timmeh on one side of the scales, and Affeldt on the other, and since Affeldt has been crap, even self-admittedly two days ago (dumb move, IMO), and no good even against lefties, tho’ he was surely ready to come in, the scales fell on Lincecum’s side. Bochy’s Choice says more about Affeldt than anything. If he’s publicly got no confidence in himself, why should Bochy? Thing is, when Affeldt came in, he did well. Course, the CarGo cork had popped already…

A simple feed to Tejada, leading a bit, shoulder high, as he cross the bag, and the DP would’ve been easy. Lincecum threw the ball ten feet in the other direction. It was uncatchable, given Tejada’s momentum. No doubt.

Lincecum knows how to deal with failure, however. His next start should be interesting.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on May 17, 2011 at 9:28 am

Tejada’s momentum the other way made a catch impossible.

      • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on May 17, 2011 at 9:47 am

Ten feet from where it should have been thrown, to lead Tejada across the bag.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 17, 2011 at 9:36 am

I saw the replays. The ball was thrown maybe 2 feet, max, on the third base side of the bag. A poor throw, yes, but ten feet? No. If it were that far, Tejada wouldn’t have been able to put his glove on it while at the bag, and he was at the bag. A younger, better fielder at least catches it and makes the force at second, maybe not finishing the DP. I give it 90/10 fault to Tim/Tejada, clearly Timmy screwed it up. I thought Tejada could not be worse than Rent. I haven’t seen Rent this year, but I can’t fathom that he’s worse at D than Tejada so far, other than Tejada has a better arm….

      • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on May 17, 2011 at 9:48 am

See above. Your imaginary fielder exists in cartoons. Stops on a dime; extends a rubbery arm behind to cradle, softly, the errant throw.

I know this is a different era and all the other cliches. and I know I probably sound like a jerk, But I don’t feel sorry for Vin. and his psych?? Before specialty pitchers, if a starter was getting bombed oh well so sad too bad. Nut up and be a man. Take your lumps. If your manager comes out and tells you he has no back up, then mentally you have to adjust go do your job. with that said why didn’t the manager pull in a position player. Managers do it when they have burned through their bullpen and the game has gone on for like 15-18 innings.
I think the bigger problem is what the players thought of the Manager for leaving him in. Do they trust that Manager to do the right thing. Does he have his players backs.

  15. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 17, 2011 at 9:32 am

to pull of the DP, sure. And I’m fine with saying it would have been a difficult play. But if you are arguing that every single player in MLB would have failed to catch that ball, a ball that hit his glove, sorry but I completely disagree about calling it *uncatchable*……

I’ll take Tejada at 3rd and Fontleroy at SS over that. As for offense, I may have missed it, but has DeRosa hit anything hard between the lines yet this season? I can’t believe his wrist is good. When I was a kid, one of the butcher’s in the local supermarket was named “Speed”. Super nice guy. And, slowest dude on the planet…

that’s another nickname no-no– naming the guy the opposite of something. Hey that fat guy needs a nickname. Let’s call him “Tiny”. Dumb.

  49. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 17, 2011 at 10:37 am

    Tale of the tape:

    Sanchez Jimenez

    3-2 Record 0-3
    3.68 ERA 6.67
    53 K 30
    28 BB 22
    1.43 WHIP 1.58

My take is that Sanchez will easily prevail. Jimenez is a VERY VERY sensitive introverted/shy person. His confidence – never great – is at an all time low. Couple that with a very inconsistent and awkward delivery, he has reverted to the form and inconsistency (he had in his delivery) prior to last year. In fact, even after the All Star break last year – he would have difficulty repeating his delivery. Plus, he didn’t help himself by not playing winter ball last year. First time in his career that he skipped it. By the by, Cargo did the same thing, despite management asking him (and Ubaldo) to attend.

This is what the GM, Dan’Dowd said, “It’s no different than a position player. I think he’s really messed up right now. He’s struggling to find a consistent delivery, and he’s really struggling to find some confidence in his ability to execute pitches. I just think he’s in a bad mental funk right now.””I think it’s the first kind of slump, so to speak, of his career, where he’s not in a good place mentally,” O’Dowd said. “Pitchers’ deliveries are like fine engines on a race car. When they’re out of whack a little bit, it affects everything. And it affects your confidence too. I also think he’s a very proud kid, and he’s very sensitive when he doesn’t play well. So I think he’s going through a tough time right now.”

Blade, I’m starting J Sanchez in FL so I’ll go with your take on the game.

    Go Giant Butts!!!

  60. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on May 17, 2011 at 11:48 am

I was surprised to read that Bochy yelled at a reporter in the clubhouse. Granted, it wasn’t the smartest way to open the questions — “Everyone wants to know, why did you leave Timmy in?” — after a game in which Bochy was in no mood to suffer idiots. I’m just trying to figure out why Bochy did this.

Also, does Bochy get a lot of crap on talk shows out there whenever he takes Timmy out? Except for a game vs. the Phillies early last season, I don’t remember this being much of an issue at all last year.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 17, 2011 at 11:55 am

He’s taken crap from fans for taking Tim out too early. Last night, he was taking crap from the scribes for taking him out too late. So, it was a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” moment that apparently prompted the minor dustup by Bochy. And, maybe he wanted the writers to focus on him a little bit and take attention away from the sucky game Tim had, as well as DeRosa questions. I wouldn’t put a little gamesmanship past the Big Giant Head…

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on May 17, 2011 at 12:01 pm

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on May 17, 2011 at 12:17 pm

I’m well aware Bochy was questioned on just about everything else he did last year, probably right up until the moment Wilson struck out Cruz to end the World Series. So I guess it was no different with handling Lincecum.

With Sizemore going on the DL again, I was wondering if the Indians might be interested in Rowand. I would think Adam Everett’s D would be welcome at SS. I know he doesn’t have much pop in his bat but he has been hitting for average this year.

  68. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on May 17, 2011 at 12:28 pm

How’s that for weird. A couple of unlikely suspects come through. Tejada has emerged a bit from his deep drop-off and maybe the pressure on Huff in the five-hole isn’t quite as intense than a step or two higher in the L.U.

  69. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 17, 2011 at 12:31 pm

I seriously doubt that the 5 vs. 3 hole has anything to do with anything. It’s not like the three was new to him.

  74. willied's avatar willied said, on May 17, 2011 at 1:20 pm

nice to see pat whack one, but I think he can only hit RHP. His HRs this year have all come off righties, when he can extend and get the outside corner strikes. As I remember, his avg. vs. righties was better than vs. lefties last year too, and he hit better at home. Maybe Nate is pushing him a little.
Can’t remember the last time derosa hit a ball hard…lot of weak grounders.

  75. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on May 17, 2011 at 1:28 pm

With Huff reverting to 2010 form with the K ,all that inning produced was the upping of Ubaldo’s pitch count to 86. One more inning at that rate and he probably will be eighty-sixed.
