A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Turning the Page/Bochy Bashers/Vin Mazzaro…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 17, 2011

I thought that MacDog nailed it at the end of the last thread. No matter what you though of that play, Tim’s bad throw took the possibility of the double play out of the equation. I thought (and still think) that was a catchable ball. But it really had no bearing on the outcome of the game. Tim was terrible and I would also agree with Macdog that I haven’t seen Tim lose his composure like that since…..maybe the time he got pissed off at the Rockies for the “humidified” balls. But he was really more irritated than anything else and he seemed to feed off it that game. Last night, he fell apart…….

And with Dirrrrrty going tonight, I would be happy if he could just walk less than Tim did last night. I’ll take that and hope we have our hitting shoes on…..

For the Bochy detractors (and they were all over the airwaves last night and this morning): Are you serious? Calling out Bochy for leaving Tim in is uncalled for. The same people who are questioning his decision to leave him in to face CarGo need to also stand up and say they had complete faith in Jeremy Freaking Affeldt to get him out. Affeldt? He’s been horrendous lately. And Tim didn’t pitch that badly in that inning, with a good throw he already out of it with the double play. And the ball Tulo hit was almost caught by Franchez. It’s idiotic to rail on Bochy for taking Tim out to early (which we hear all the time) and then rail on him when he leaves him in a hitter too long….

And to Vin Mazzaro: Dude, I feel for you. The manager of the Royals (who is it? Yost?) should be disciplined for leaving him in the game that long. Letting him throw 78 pitches in 2 innings could easily have caused him to injure his arm (not to mention what 14 ER’s did to him psychologically) and then promptly optioning him to AAA shows how much they care about the arms of their pitchers. If I’m a KC pitcher I don’t trust one freaking person in the Royals organization, at any level, this morning…

….also meant to give props to Chuck for his line about it taking 17 hours to define “catchable.”

For a while down here, Chris Brown played for the Pads while Larry Bowa was the manager. One of the worst player/manager marriages of all time.
Once saw Brown when he was still playing for the Giants down here at old Jack Murphy Stadium. He got knocked down by a high-hard one and then on the next pitch hit one over my head in the left field bleachers—which was a good poke at that park.
Only guys I ever saw go upper deck there were Kevin Mitchell and ARod when he was a young pup on the Mariners.

Killebrew hit one 522 feet off some dude? Wow, what did THAT sound like? That would go over the glove at ATT. Maybe a handful of guys, steroids or not, who can hit a ball 522 feet in the history of the game……

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on May 17, 2011 at 8:08 pm

Farthest shot I ever witnessed was Darrell Evans hit one into the RF upper deck. I was in row 12 and it hit 3 rows in front of me. It had to be over 500 ft.

  3. SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on May 17, 2011 at 7:57 pm

I still have some great Killebrew BB cards from when I was a kid. I can still picture the ’73 card where he looks like a bad ass up at the plate waiting on a pitch. Those 1973 cards are my all-time favorites.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on May 17, 2011 at 8:02 pm

I had Killebrew cards too. But I had to trade for them. With my extra Bobby Bonds and gary Mathews and shit

any card from the 70’s rocked. It would give you like 5 stats, then on the left side there would be some one scene cartoon and at the bottom you’d get a little bit of personal trivia: “Harmon once bowled a 242 game” or some shit like that. LOVED it.

Hawk is a fucking pussy, he sits out for a month and then comes back as some random new guy. But he obviously doesn’t have much time on the internet cause he fires off about 30 posts. His IP address is always the same, that means he’s probably at a hospital or a library. Anyway, about 10 posts into it he starts blathering away about me fucking Twin or vice versa. It’s actually quite funny. And his email addresses all sound the same so he’s an easy target to bounce. Hey Hawk, FUCK YOU! I’ll see your response in my spam filter……….

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on May 17, 2011 at 8:08 pm

      So it *was* Hawk.
My understanding, from anonymous sources, is…to prep…before firing off his lame venom, he strategically places a dildough on his easy chair *just* to get in the right mood.

coco crisp did it earlier this year and it was just underwhelming. He had the fro but he didn’t have anything else—the uber-tight uniform, the bad lighting, the random fanless stands in the background…….

  9. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 17, 2011 at 8:07 pm

“Ed Brinkman”. It’s quite possible that Ed never played baseball. That’s how rad that blurb of the card was…….

Last one, I promise—from Bert Campaneris’ 1973 card
“Campy once pitched a game lefthanded and righthanded”
(With a little drawing of a guy throwing 2 balls at once)

ALways tripped me out that Campy hit 22 homers one year, but never reached double figures in any other year.
I used to study the backs of these things for hours.

    • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on May 17, 2011 at 8:19 pm

Campy also played all 9 positions in one game. So did Cesar Tovar.

      • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on May 17, 2011 at 8:27 pm

Kobe Tai once played all 10 positions. Let’s see Campy top that!!

Doesn’t it blow your mind to see the old footage of baseball games where fans spill onto the field after a big game? The players turn into fullbacks, as they plough into fans, as they try to get off the field. It’s just so different now. The fans COULD still spill onto the field if they all wanted to these days. There isn’t enough security to stop it. But it just isn’t done anymore. It still happens after big college football and basketball games.

  17. SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on May 17, 2011 at 8:25 pm

Ok…..I’m gonna give you 3 cartoons from 1973 cards, you see if you can tell me who the players are.
    1. “Pitchers intentionally walked Willie more than any other player”
    2. “Wilbur’s best pitch is his baffling knuckleball”
    3. “Bert got married during the ’71 All Star Break”

One of my favorite Killebrew highlights was also a Monte Moore classic. Harmon hit one about 450 feet off Catfish, I believe. Monte reported that Harmon was “lucky” that Hunter hung one. Pretty bitter about that dumb luck, also…
“The Killer” ( no, I didn’t give him the nickname, Slim) was the only guy to hit one totally out of at least a couple stadiums, I remember one that went out of Tiger Stadium (or was it “Briggs” then? )…Just recall everyone looking up…I think my Dad reported “Oh my God”. I know it wasn’t his regular HR call, not a particularly memorable one “Going, going, gone”, I think…Harmon was a gentle man, soft spoken, humble. So much so that, unlike Mr. October, he was never criticized for admiring his works of art from home plate… RIP.
