A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Nate Saves the Day

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 20, 2011

I don’t know how they calculate a Β *WAR* number but Nate’s should go up a tick or two after that performance. I don’t know many other players in the league who make that catch and NO ONE makes it without the shallow OF positioning. I’m certain that’s the first time I’ve ever seen a Giants game end like that. And I’m surprised no one has mentioned it, but he didn’t just dive for the ball, he had to move his arm out well to the left—I don’t think there was too much more *left* he could have gone to haul that bad boy in…….

Everything Wilson missed was up. That tells me that his ankle WAS bothering him since he was having trouble planting and finishing off his pitches. But in the end, who cares? Despite the unusual ending, it was a typical save for Bee-Wheezy….

Baggs noted another bomb by Belt for Fresno and wondered again if a call up was imminent. Listening to Sabean on KNBR, he didn’t sound too keen on bringing him up right now but he could have just been trying to diffuse the questions about it. Sabes also made it clear that Zito was several weeks away from returning. Really? From a sprained ankle? He’s obviously throwing because Raggs has him working on his delivery to re-capture the velocity that he’s lost. It’s actually the perfect scenario. They can warehouse him without any of the drama. Something tells me Zito is fine with it. He pitches scared and fearful of contact. Voggy pitches with focused determination. He’s been an unbelievable story this year and has developed into “This Year’s Torres”. In many ways he’s a savior of sorts. With all the fretting we’ve done about what to do with Zito, Voggy just comes in and poof Zito is gone and practice a new grip on the ball far away from a real-life game situation that he would normally be screwing up. Gotta love it………

Those sausage races are so fun! I included Milwaukee on the itinerary for my great ballpark vacation next year. I believe the runners, however, are female :p So rat me out to Mr. MOB.

Otherwise, I agree. Baseball should end in October, the way God meant Mr. Octobers to be.

My buddy went to Miller Park late last year…he sez all of the seating has been angled to more or less face the infield and batters…

Phalli running rampant around a stadium have seen some ugly incidents resulting this bumper sticker:

    “Don’t whack our wiener!”

    A)5:03 PM on May 20, 2011

Didn’t some player intentionally knock over the Italian sausage? I remember something about a criminal investigation.

I’d also like to see that person come down a slide, although maybe do it by mistake after Posey knocks it out of the park.

    B)5:10 PM on May 20, 2011

Yes…but I don’t remember his name…I didn’t know there was a criminal investigation either…I just thought he had been suspended for a game…

There seems to an absurd protocol that if the ump doesn’t ask for help, he doesn’t get it. The crew chief should live up to his title- that call needed reviewing. The second base ump had to have seen it.

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on May 20, 2011 at 9:54 pm

Yeah, I don’t get that either. In the NFL, the officials will run over to help, with the goal being that the most important thing is to get the call right. But I’m sure the NFL officials are considered lower on the food chain by the baseball umps, because the baseball umps are full-time.

Right now Manny has the highest B.A. among those Giants who played tonight. Of course he has had all of 15 A.B.’s, though this one has to be huge for his confidence level. Winning can get to be a habit. Burriss may be nothing more than a utility infielder but sometimes those are the guys who help you win games.

Aubrey reverts from Huff n Puff to Huff the Magic Dragon. Maybe the hometown crowd, remembering his heroics for the World Champs, collectively wished him into recovering his pride and coming through with the game-winner. Our nifty lefty loogie Lopez is a winner tonight too. Great staff effort by the bullpen and especially by the Little Birdie that Could. Giants have won all of Vogelsong’s starts. When this team’s #5 starter can face the opponent’s ace and the team ultimately wins it says something.

Preface this by saying, yeah, Nate is a very, very good right fielder, but we did have a dude by the name of Bobby Bonds, who could play an outstanding right field too . . . at Candlestick no less . . . and before they enclosed it (in other words, non-stop swirling wind). Not saying who was a better fielder, but I saw Bonds and he was simply amazing, only outshined by a guy named Mays.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 20, 2011 at 11:05 pm

Well, needless to say we’d take Bobby over Nate. I think Nate’s arm is a little better, but Bobby kicks his rear in every other department. Any ball hit from center to right at the Stick in those days of the late 60s had an excellent chance of getting caught. As a kid I saw Bobby play A ball in a few Fresno Giants games back in ’66 or something like that. One look at how he played and you knew he was headed ASAP to the bigs…
