A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Winning By Producing the Bare Mimimum

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 22, 2011

It’s too bad, the last one was one of my better ones. Oh well, new gold is alway but a click away…..

I want to know if any of you have a lead with one of the Elias Sports guys. I need to know if this has ever happened before in the history of major league baseball. I’m guessing it has not…

The Giants have won 8 straight home games. These are the runs they’ve scored in each game: 4, 3, 3, 1, 4, 3, 2, 3. Grand total: 23 in 8 games. There opponents have scored, get this, 11 (E-L-E-V-E-N) runs. In 8 (E-I-G-H-T) games. I find that…wait for it……ASTOUNDING!!!!!!!!!!

There has to be something historical there. First guy who hears back from an Elias guy about it gets a bobblehead of me taking a dump (in fact, such an item truly does exist–a 40 year old birthday present from The Boney One, one of the great b-day presents in the history of time)….

By the way, XOOT and BOZO tied in the voting for POTVP. I’ll post it later today. How it will pain me to take down “All things Molina”…..

I’m having some technical difficulties with the snipping tool, that’s why you aren’t seeing the Flap Fantasy Standings posted lately…….

Make that nine games Flav . . . I am going to the game today and the 2 other times I’ve attended on this latest trip, they have won.

Going to say this now for posterity . . . My weakness (BA/hitting) has been addressed, albeit, Josh Johnson going on the DL will probably delay the ascension to 1st place a bit longer than I anticipated. Regardless, No Talent, Flavorino, and No Whitey are GOING DOWN . . . However, first I will take care of the little matter of Uncas’s Army, PawliesPandas, and CrazyDiamonds.*

I was actually hoping to meet one of you slackers on this trip, but no luck (Chuck missing me by two games – I think he went to the Friday night game).

Bill2, I did the same thing my Senior year in High School, only taking the required U.S. Government, Algebra, and P.E. classes during the entire year. Lotsa fun. However, it almost cost me, as I was failing Algebra. Back then, some High Schools had open campuses and I majored in “Pot Smoking,” with an elective in “Drinking Beer.” Fortunately, my Algebra teacher was understanding and forewarned me about my Ridgemont High ways and I passed the course with her assistance . . . barely.

Funny, that you should mention that . . . We had a PE and social studies teacher/football coach, that dated one of the hottest juniors in my HS. Back then it wasn’t a big thing like it is now, where it can land you in jail. They were discreet about it, but everyone knew what was going on. I wont mention his name (no need to), but he was a very good college player and had a WR tryout with the Jets, prior to getting the coaching and teaching gig in HS.

OK, what do you do vs. LHP with the OF? burrell hasn’t hit anything lately, esp the breaking ball, and has put up much worse numbers vs. lefties than righties, where he has .500 slugging and .900 OPS. Nate can hit lefties a little, but singles only when and if he does, very low OB…even torres hasn’t done much (yet, hopefully). Rowand is back down to .250, with a .299 OB.
burriss is supposedly about to become super utility guy that fills in everywhere, including the OF….if he starts for Fontenot, where do you put him, SS or 3B?

Blade— you receive ultimate props for all the games you’ve hit during your trip. I haven’t been to even one this yr, Game 1 of the WS was my last one. I seem to remember you stay in Sunnyale when you visit (could be mistaken) and if you do and want to hook up for a beer after the game at my buddy’s sportsbar in Los Altos, let me know……
WillieD– I think you play Nate versus everyone right now and just hope for the best with his at bats v lefties. Ride this defensive streak as long as it goes. He’s not really hitting righties either so I think you take the substantial bounty that he bestows us on defense and let it ride…..

Y, know, I’M even finding it difficult to post right now because there’s so little (as in hitting) to complain and kvetch about. Last night, postgame, it even reached the point where internecine squabbles took over the board. Big turnoff for me. So what happens if the Giants keep winning? Silent board? Four day monsoon season here in the Northwoods now. Otherwise i’d already be outdoors Another quiet day at the plate again today with Gio and Drrrrty going? Most likely. Baseball purists tend to enjoy the low-scoring stuff. Casual fans look more for hyperstimulation and are happier with the two inferior sports.

  17. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 22, 2011 at 10:04 am

My point is that Nate not hitting lefties or anyone for that matter, isn’t really a big deal if we don’t have someone substantially better (offensively) to play instead. And since we don’t you just ride his defense for as long as you can. He’s clearly getting more confident out there, maybe this is how he’ll always be. Who knows, maybe he gets BETTER defensively. Right now, his defense is making up for any of his offensive shortcomings and/or those of his possible replacements…

This day in baseball, 1933: Joe Sewell of the Yankees struck out for the first time this season, during a 3-0 win over Cleveland (his former team). Sewell would strike out only three more times in 524 at-bats. In his final two years with the Yanks, Joe struck out a grand total of seven times in over 1,000+ at-bats.

Just seven strike outs in two years? Rowand accomplishes that in two games.

One thing I’ve never understood about hockey is some of these dudes make obvious penalties like tripping, cracking a guy with a stick, hooking, etc. like they don’t give a crap about making the penalty, when they know if they get called for it and sent off for 2 minutes, the team is at a huge disadvantage and in danger of giving up a goal. All these penalties can’t be in the heat of the moment. I’ll never be a big hockey fan, the fighting and macho crap is idiotic…

That was one of the few times (though I maintain the correct play is always to go to 1B) that the 3B could have crawled over and just tagged out Burrell. Looks to me like Sanchee has throttled back on his fastball. Haven’t heard the gun readouts, whether that’s true. Whatever he’s done the last two starts, the control is better, for sure. Krukow says he’s getting on top of the pitches, fine. To me, I call it follow through. When he’s wild, he seems to finish the throw standing up too high, when he’s got control, he finishes lower…

Now THAT is encouraging with Dirrrty. The infield lets him down once, arguably twice, then he sticks with it to get the DP ball to end the frame. That was a solid performance right there…

Flav – I didn’t vote on the POTW so I vote for xoot and he wins.

Zum – sorry dude, I can’t stand interleague games, I still believe those games should be reserved for the All Star game and World Series.

Loo, (from last night) I love Mitch, even though I’ve been getting rid of memorabilia I’d love some Mitchell stuff.

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on May 22, 2011 at 2:45 pm

MLB is convinced that inter-league boosts attendance. It does in certain cases, but I’m skeptical that it’s a major total boost overall. And that uncertain boost is used to justify adding inequities to the schedules.

      • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on May 22, 2011 at 2:47 pm

Inequities with the “rivalry series”, I mean.

      • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on May 22, 2011 at 2:53 pm

I still think, Interleague play and the All Star game determining home field for the WS are some of the worst things Selig ever did “for baseball” (well, Fox being able to block all Sat. games should be included).

Good on Gomez to pitch out of another jam that was unnecessary.
If you guys think we’re gonna win this division continuing to only excel at just one of the three facets of the game, you got another thing coming.

The Giants have made a lot outstanding plays on defense this week.

Bozo, I’m not diggin’ the idea of the extra wildcard team next season. It’s bogus.

He’s probably done for the day. So the wildly inconsistent Basket Case has now given up more than 3 earned runs ONCE in 10 starts…
I’ll have four more of those, waitress..

If Affeldt has to field this, hold your breath.

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:05 pm

Franchez was not pleased at the 90 MPH fastball at his groin.

  63. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:07 pm

Too bad about Affeldt, he’s just a gasoline man anymore.

  64. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:07 pm

Affeldt best not fuck up this game for Gomez. I’ve grown tired of his act. His best performance was of the year was giving the speech at the Bryan Stow Dodger game.

He’s trying his best to literally throw this game away. I’d package his ass in trade for a SS in a heartbeat.

And just like that as I type, he fucked it up. Fuck that worthless piece of shit…

Zum, when I used to work at Fair Isaac (the FICO score people), they essentially made the MLB schedules (not sure if they still do, as I left in 2009). Basically they take a raw data dump from MLB, run it through formulas consisting of about 400 variables based partially on attendance, regional network revenues, radio advertising, etc…

It’s pretty well figured out to the “nth” degree of an insurance actuary.

Ah, that could explain the Giants playing the Rockies 3 games at the end of the season.

And perhaps last year, ending the season with the Pads … somebody knows something? 🙂 Although FICO is almost exclusively known as a/the “credit score” firm, they’re really a mathematical modeling company. Or … really sophisticated bookies!

  67. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:10 pm

I feel like an Affeldt DL visit may be needed. He has basically sucked since the season started…

  68. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:13 pm

He had been, I thought, relegated to pitching when they were behind. He, Runzler, Mota.

  69. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:14 pm

Seriously, Jeremy Affeldt is DONE. How Bochy can have any confidence in sending him out there is beyond me. Doesn’t help when his other choice is Runzler, but that’s no excuse. Package both of those POS for a SS. I’m sick and tired of their shit.

But you know, if we had a legitimate ML offense, maybe a suck-ass performance wouldn’t come back to bite you in the ass like today. But when you always play with NO Whitey margin for error because of your lack of offense, this shit is surely to ensue…

  70. Sportdude's avatar Sportdude said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:15 pm

Wasn’t watching the game tracker. Why didn’t sanchez start the 7th with only 100 pitches. only one walk…

  71. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:16 pm

With a lead the guys are Ramirez, Lopez,Romo, Wilson.

  72. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:17 pm

Bochy tries to “rehabilitate” guys, I think. He’s a player’s manager. He was trying to give Affeldt a chance to turn his season around. Didn’t happen, obviously.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:21 pm

I’m all for that, but not when the game is right on the line, until you prove you’re back and sharp. Problem is, Giants are never in a laugher (good problem) so somebody can be put in the game to get the cobwebs out. Affeldt has admitted himself that he suxxx. That is not a good sign. What are they going to to with him? He can’t be trusted now whatsoever in a close game, and that’s all the Giants play…

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:22 pm

“Rehabilitation” is for drunks, drug addicts and repeat criminal offenders. NOT for baseball players.

  73. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:18 pm

The hitters due were Pennington, pitcher, Crisp. Runzler was hardly the only alternative.

  74. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on May 22, 2011 at 3:19 pm

The worst part of that inning was that we didn’t force the A’s to hit for Gonzalez.
