Florida Series and Geren/Fuentes

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 24, 2011

Look, Fuentes is an extreme *P* for going to the press with his Geren tirade last night. Just suck it up and take your 7th loss like a professional. But he did disclose some interesting info about Geren and it amazes me that Beane’s best bud can keep a gig like this for so many years. At some point the A’s have to upgrade that job, right?
Florida is a tricky team. Stanton might lead the NL is hr’s this year. Morrison is the real deal, too. HanRam is having the worst year of his career. Luckily we miss JJ who’s on the DL but Anibel Sanchez., when he’s throwing strikes, is almost as hard to hit as our own Dirrrrrty Sanchez. He’s almost dirrrrrtier……..

Should be a fun series. I’ll say we sweep going  2-1, 1-0, 5-3……….

This one struck me as “blamestorming”, not to mention puzzled logic : “I get up in the seventh inning,” Fuentes said. “I have no idea. I didn’t stretch. If there was some sort of communication beforehand, I’d be ready, which I was. I was heated up. I was ready.

    I didn’t stretch. (If…..then) I’d be ready. I was ready. Huh?

AZ has a double-header @ the Rox today/night. Half a game between the two, second place could be interesting.

This one confused me, too: “”The games in San Francisco were unorthodox managing, … I thought it was a National League thing.”

I get the part that Geron had some puzzling moments of management. I missed the context where it might be explained (blamed) as “a National League thing.” Friday he got put in the 10th with a tie and blew it (the A’s batters in that frame were the 8-9-1 slots). Sunday he got put in the 11th with a tie and blew it (the A’s batters in that frame were the 9-1-2 slots). What did I miss?

If you missed the …. eh, “Rapture” last Saturday, don’t worry. According to Harold Camping, who called the May 21st date, it’s actually coming (fer reals, this time!) Oct 21. Should make for interesting MLB playoffs!

Sunday chron Ostler brings up the idea again of moving Posey, and of course splashers are all over it. To me this is complete and utter FUBAR.
first, someone has to play that spot. so it’s ok to save posey but endanger someone else? C know what they are getting into. Want to try a different mask? fine, but someone has to wear it.
that someone for us happens to be pretty damn good at what he does, which is work with the PS, and has a strong accurate arm. Whomever you trade or “groom” for the position is going to be a downgrade.
“He played ss in high school.” This ain’t high school, and he does not have the body for it…it’s also the reason he didn’t play it anymore in college. No comparisons to Craig biggio allowed. He actually played CF…do you really think Posey could play CF?
Injuries happen everywhere….last night alone, McLouth Pedroia and Adam LaRoche went on the DL. Just because you move Posey does not mean he would not ever get hurt again. On SF alone, we have had to deal with FSanchez, Torres, Panda and Ross just this year. Nate has been claiming to be hurt for the last two years and after making the catch vs. LA too.
Pls leave the kid alone…he is doing what he likes to do and is pretty damn good at it. Sf has Sando on his way back and Huff/Belt at the only realistic positions he could move to now, and moving him means whiteside batting 4 times a game. If you are struggling to score runs I don’t see how that helps.

Harold’s 89. I think he should worry about his own rapture.

BTW I saw one of his motor homes on I-5 when we were driving back from LA a couple weeks ago. The guy was doing 60 in the fast lane, and garnering a lot of anger from the passing motorists.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 24, 2011 at 8:50 am

If you impede the fast lane, people take a good ook at you, and hence, the van’s signage, too. Harold is not only a nutjob, but a fraud. Newspaper account said the last non-profit filing with the IRS showed they had $34 million in cash and securities. Now that’s friggin’ rapturous…

Roles in the pen are a sensitive issue, and managing them a difficult task. Fuentes last night was brought in and faced two guys, walked one then got a force out, and then was yanked. Wuertz then blew the game up. If he was only gonna be a loogy in that situation, I’m sure it was news to him.
geren is obviously a doofus. Maybe Beane likes it that way, but his team is falling apart right in front of him. And who signed the washed up fuentes anyway? But now all the blame is going to be deflected to fuentes and away from the two guys most responsible for the team suckitude, beane and geren.

WillieD–totally agree with you on Posey. Leave him where he is. Did the Reds move Bench? Did the Yankees move Yogi? Plus, his offensive numbers as a first baseman would be fairly pedestrian….

Fuented popping off just gives me more respect for Wilson. He gets a lot of comments for the persona and media appearances but I have yet to hear anything questioning Bochy’s use of him. 2 inning save? Sure. Come in when its tied? Sure. Dude just wants the ball with the game on the line. Save opportunity or not.

    • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 24, 2011 at 9:08 am

Bochy only uses him in tie games *at home* -that is SOP for all managers. Wilson has no reason to question how he’s used. Bochy is not Bob Gherkin, he’s the best in the game at pen management.

      • dirtnrocksnreno's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on May 24, 2011 at 9:26 am

I’m not questioning Bochy’s use of him; home or away. Just noting the contrast. Geren made a few questionable move in the series. I don’t follow the A’s at all so I don’t know if Geren is a total nincompoop or he just was confused by the real version of Baseball played in the NL.

Flav, you also have to factor in the SP. Lincecum and Posey both admit it took a long time for comfort zone to kick in, and Lincecum credited Molina quite a lot for his own early success . Considering how strong the SP is, and how much money we have invested in them, swapping out a starting C in whom they have confidence and repeated success doesn’t seem to make much sense.

  12. Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on May 24, 2011 at 8:49 am

WilieD, I agree you don’t move Posey now, I have mentioned Biggio comparison, but he played catcher for the first 5 years with the Astros, he established himself as an RBI machine and that is why the Astros moved him. Posey has not established that. So leave him where he is.

This Florida series could be an interesting test. Just how good are the Giants in their own venue? Ricky Nolasco and Anibel Sanchez are pretty tough cookies, particularly Sanchez, as Flav notes. Volstad is the weaker of the three. BF also notes that the Marlins have some talent at the plate. Presently they appear to be notably stronger offensively than SF.

Sweep of these guys, with a record close to identical to that of the Giants and much of that against Eastern Division teams, looks problematical. Two of three looks doable, but who knows? Needless to say, the kind of walkoff run the team has had lately is not sustainable. The pitching is there, defense has tightened up, with some highlight reel stuff, even, speed-weapon has started to assert itself ~ but, as we all know, the stickwork is sketchy at best ~ a bit better lately in getting those key, clutch hits late in the game.

What the Giants do have in great measure is an elan, an espirit de corps, a can-do feeling that comes with being World Champs. Florida is the first of three upcoming tests. Take two of three and they pass stage one. Next on the docket is Milwaukee, which has come on lately. Some guys who can rake on that squad. They face Timmy, Drrrty and Cain, so it could go 1-2 or 2-1 for that series. Sweep by either team is doubtful.

The teller is the four-gamer over the last couple days of May and the first two of June in St. Louis. Nasty team. More balanced than the Brewhahas. Bumgarner, Vogelsong, Lincecum and Sanchez face Pujols, Holliday and company. Giants hitters go up against some pretty nasty pitching. A two-two split in St. L. would be an acceptable outcome against the Redbirds. Giants take half of the upcoming 10 games against three tough teams and i’ll be satisfied enough.

Gherkin used Fuentes in 3 games , two here and last night, with the score tied on the road. NO manager does that. Gherkin is a fucking idiot. The toss a coin on pitching to Huff or not all weekend was high comedy. And to elaborate on my response to Dirt: Wilson is never used in non-save opps exept score tied at home, ninth inning; or just to get work in if he hasn’t been used in awhile. As I said, he has no cause to bitch- and, if he did, it would only be once…

Isn’t Geren one of Beane’s pals from his playing days or something?

Last weekend series was an interesting contrast of the two bay area organizations. I always thought the whole Money Ball angle was a bit overblown. Beane obviously values pitching. Having Mulder, Hudson and Zito previously and the current staff (regardless of recent DL stints). So in that way he and Sabean are similar. The difference is Beane wants guy with high OBP and Sabean likes guys who get their bat off the sholder and hack. Lincecum mowing them down on Saturday shows the weakness in Beane’s approach. Meanwhile SF’s hackers generally seem to handle opposing staff aces well.

regarding stix comments on the g’s “stickwork”, i think it’s more than just an elan thing. Any one of those guys can beat you (except maybe miggy). they proved it last post-season and they’ve got that mojo going again. I’d much rather see a fairly dangerous lineup top to bottom than a middle loaded lineup with 2 or 3 big hitters surrounded by a whole lot of nothing. that’s the reason they’re winning in walk-off fashion: it doesn’t take the top or middle of the lineup to score a critical run. It can come from anywhere (and if we can get Nate hitting pinch bombs, ford and burris getting on base, than wow!). And I wonder if it’s starting to get inside the head of some oppossing staffs, especially late in the game.

  28. willied's avatar willied said, on May 24, 2011 at 11:10 am

chickens coming home to roost over there. Beane could have hired Wash, known and respected among the IF guys he worked with.
If he valued OB so highly, the team he had last year was terrible at it…number of guys who played regularly around the mendoza line of .300 including kouzmanoff and suzuki, and of course slugging was dismal..so Cust, he dumped.
He never cared about steals or D during the m-ball years either…now it’s his mantra. He brings in new guys to beef up his O every year, and it still sucks because no one wants to play there and hit, or watch for that matter.

Regarding catchers and concussions- obviously there’s been a tectonic shift in approaches towards concussions, and near-concussions, and quasi-concussions in sports. It’s hard to know how this will all play out. All the sports are figuring it out as they go. It’s an unknown future in that regard.
Posey is a very talented catcher, and should stay at that position as long as he reasonably can, IMO. And from all accounts, he loves playing catcher, and wants to stay there.

Why would somebody that’s there get up and sing take me out to the ball game? The first person to do it must have been a moron.”

        Also from the Baseball Almanac:
Harry Caray, who is credited with singing it first at a ball game in 1971, once said, “I would always sing it, because I think it’s the only song I knew the words to!” On Opening Day in 1976 Bill Veeck noticed the fans were singing along with Caray so a secret microphone was placed in the broadcast booth the following day to allow ALL the fans to hear him. Veeck explained to Caray, “Harry, anybody in the ballpark hearing you sing ‘Take Me Out to the Ball Game’ knows that he can sing as well as you can. Probably better than you can. So he or she sings along. Hell, if you had a good singing voice you’d intimidate them, and nobody would join in!”

That epic blown save by the Dodgers last night ended with a very nifty bit of baserunning. The Astro runner had to slide past the blocked plate and get his hand on the plate somehow and he found a way.
Then the Astros spent the next few minutes beating each other up. These walk-off baseball celebrations are really getting out of hand. But it’s the expected ritual now. You must beat up the person who got the winning hit.

I’m sure the attack on Bryan Stow was the final deciding point for MLB to take over the Dodgers. MLB no longer believed that the Dodgers could even run their own stadium security properly.

  49. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 24, 2011 at 3:13 pm

Man, if stadium security is supposed to prevent that, just fucking bring in the militia for the ballgames.

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on May 24, 2011 at 3:16 pm

Well, did McCourt cut back on security due to financial hardship? All the Stows lawyers have to show is that they did, and therefore the parking lot wasn’t safe for fans.

      • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on May 24, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Yep. That’s it. Case closed. If they cut back on security, automatically security wasn’t sufficient. Oh, wait. Unless it was really really good before. IN that event. . . .

Of course, the Stows had years to go before the SOLs on their claims ran out. Wonder why they rushed to hit em now? (And don’t say to become a creditor before McCourt and the bums go bankrupt; doesn’t work that way.)

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on May 24, 2011 at 3:52 pm

It ain’t that difficult, Mr Hunt. If the Stow people can show that McCourt skimped on security for opening weekend against their biggest rivals, well, that will look pretty bad in any jury’s eyes.

The point is, this DOESN’T happen every game. Not even once a year, Not on the scale of injury that was sustained. Seeing as it usually takes about 2 hours to get out of the parking liot, you’d think they could have found them before they got anywhere.

Just got around to looking at the Daily Journal. Tom Girardi’s firm is representing the Stows. Girardi’s an excellent plaintiffs’ lawyer. One interesting allegation in the complaint: It took the Dodgers personnel “10 to 15 minutes to respond to the scene where Stow was injured.” On the other hand, the Dodgers have won lawsuits in the past related to beatings in their parking lot. “No one can reasonably contend that even a significant increase in police personnel will prevent all crime or any particular crime,” reasoned the court of appeal. Girardi is quoted as saying that it’s going to be “real easy” to get around that case law. He says the bums “cut security by two-thirds and fire[d] the security director and sauce[d] everybody up with beer.” Hmmmm.

He was involved in that case, I think. He has handled many very large cases. I heard him deliver an opening statement back in the early nineties. Very strange situation for him. The defendants in the case were three huge oil companies. Two of them were not based in California, and they hired local counsel to appear with their usual big firm lawyers. One of the oil companies hired Tom Girardi to be its local counsel — a rare defense chair for him. They hired him because he had been Jerry Brown’s judicial appointments secretary when the trial judge in the case had gotten appointed to the bench. The judge loved Girardi. Girardi’s client was the only oil company defendant that prevailed at trial (there was no jury). On appeal, the justices all shook their heads during oral argument and one said, on the record, “This makes no sense. The case was identical as to all three defendants.”

And I parked about 4 blocks away. the whole thing is where did the beating take place cause there had to be lots of people walking all over after a game. that is why I find it so hard to believe it took this long to find the people responsible. I mean 40,000 fans leaving all at once and no one saw this happening

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on May 24, 2011 at 6:11 pm

I don’t know, Flav, the extent of Stow’s injuries I would agree is probably an anomaly but fights are fairly common. Even inside the parks. I don’t go to many games but even I’ve seen a few. And I’m not defending the assholes that did this to Stow but I doubt even they realized how badly they were beating him. And as I said before, if someone has it in their mind to be an asshole, there’s not much anyone can do to stop them. With more security, maybe they would have been caught at the scene but the damage might have been already done. It’s just a fucked up situation. A lot of what ifs.

Well, as it applies to the lawsuit, if McCourt did cut 2/3 of the security and fire the director in cost-cutting measures, it won’t look very good in the eyes of any jury.

You can’t argue that he’s creating a safer environment by cutting security. Yeah, these thugs likely would have done this anyway even with added security in place, but who’s to say there could have been a cop nearby when Stow and his friends were walking to their car?
