Dirrrrrrrrty Goes Today……..

Over the long haul Brandon Crawford can’t hit….

Would rather see Burriss in there…..

Belted out a very loud “Fuck Yeah!” after Whiteside tagged Fielder and flipped the ball in front of him….

Still numbed and bumming out for Posey, and hating on mlb baseball a little bit.

Took a road trip with my son yesterday and listened to last night’s game with my son on the car radio. We stopped and got some sandwiches for dinner, I didn’t want to listen (I thought the mood of dinner might be better if we weren’t listening to a fucking Brewers game, seriously why is that team even in the NL?) but my son wanted to listen to the game, so we took our sandwiches out to the car, in time to hear the Miggy ab with men on first and third.

So while my son and I watch the sun get low in the California sky and munch on our subs, my son and I got to listen to the divine intervention of a Miggy walk, followed by the Crawford Slam. It doesn’t get any better.

Because of that scrub douche Cousins, the Giants will almost assuredly not repeat this season, and that fact still really pisses me off. But that moment with my son was pretty special. Good times.

      Nice SN.

Yeah, repeating is a long shot now, but it was going to be very tough with Buster. Still, in a short series…who knows?? Eli could pull a Gene Tenace. Obviously everyone will need to step it up, Pablo will have to come back strong and Belt- Crawford will have to contribute. But what a story of perseverance, overcoming adversity and the odds that would be.

I just watched “Raging Fred” . . . Too funny.

Congrats to Crawford, but yeah, he isn’t the answer . . . Numbers in the minors are less than overwhelming.

    Handicapping the West:

Numero Two – Arizona: Here are your Giants main competition for the rest of the year IMHO. Three teams in MLB have won 8 of their last 10, but the Diamondbacks are hotter than them all. They have won 9 of 10 and 11 of 13. Not certain any Flappers caught this/mentioned it – AZSnakepit manager Jim McLennan tried to describe the happiness Buster Posey’s injury brought him. That involved trying to parse the difference between celebrating the actual injury and celebrating the end result of the injury – that the only team ahead of them in the division just got weaker. You can bet that wasn’t well received by Giants players.

Numero Three – Los Angeles: The Rockies aren’t the only team who seems to lose close games late. Los Angeles lost two walkoff games in one series this week. Injuries have ravaged the Dodgers this season. The Dodgers used at least 3 of their planned starting 4 infield for just 14 of (their first) 47 games this season. Bullpen sucks, especially closer position. Nevertheless, they are the Dodgers and they will try to “spoil” the Giants run to the Division title.

Numero Four – San Diego: The Padres are well on a track to be sellers at the All-Star Break. ‘Nuff Said.

Conclusion: Forget the dual sweeps and first place standing. Absolutely nothing happened with the Giants last week except for Buster Posey’s gruesome injury. At least, that’s how it appears. Posey will likely require surgery to repair torn ligaments and a broken leg. If all goes perfectly, he might return in time for October. That being said, the GMen are in 1st and that counts for something. In the meantime, Flappers will get a wash of minor leaguers. With Posey, Mike Fontenot and Darren Ford all going on the disabled list, Brian Sabean called up a slew of youth. Brandon Belt (who has been burning through the PCL) was called up again. He could play first base with Aubrey Huff sliding to third. Or Belt could play corner outfield.
29-year-old catcher Chris Stewart has been in AAA for six seasons after first reaching the level in 2004 with the White Sox. The Giants are his fifth organization, and Stewart really is just a placeholder on the roster until something better comes along. Who dat is anyone’s guess.

Consequently, I’m going to back track (different from “untrack”) on my prediction that this would be a cakewalk . . . Giants still win the Division, but it will be close in lieu of Posey’s season ending injury.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 28, 2011 at 8:15 am

Don’t know what I ate for breakfast, but I forgot about Colorado . . . Squeeze them in at “Numero Four” and bounce San Diego down one. Ubaldo still hasn’t one a game this year (now going back to Sept. of last year). Couple that with musical chairs in the infield and outfield – They just inserted Eric Young into the infield and outfield mix (Lopez losing favor with Tracy). Bullpen might as well be called “Gas Can Brigade” and they lost their top pitcher to injury. Tulo less than inspiring lately; Gonzales is starting to hit, but you know that Helton can’t keep drinking from the fountain of youth forever.

The rest of the division, sans Dbax, is falling apart right in front of us….I just think anyone writing off the season is way over-dooming it.
good for the kid, who made all the plays in the field, which would be the larger issue for burriss. Is he a mlb SS or a career bench guy utility back up?
I am 100% behind (was it bozo?) whomever suggested Fielder gets to pick himself up out of the dirt. This is way overdue, imo. Sanchez is not a comfortable AB anyway, and putting the thought in the back of his mind a high and tight one might be coming his way at any time is a good thing.
Plus you might get one freebie…Sanchez buzzes him and then the umps issue the warnings.

Highly inspirational win last night. After being swept at home by the Fish and then the loss of Posey this team couldda gone into a total funk with nobody being particularly surprised. Could still happen, but Timmy maintained just enough starch to allow for Crawford’s miracle blast and another wild save by the BP, crescendoing with the Drama Queen’s typical Broadway production in the 9th.

Blade: Tempting to go along with your analysis as its quite good and may well make for the final display. Snakes may be second best in the division when all is said and done, but no way Jose they can keep up anything vaguely resembling their recent record. Teams get hot and teams get not. IMO, they are two or three pitchers short of being dead serious competitors for the Division title.

Drrrty Sanchez vs the Howling Wolf this afternoon. That mixup could go any which way. IF Bochy replaces Burrell with Belt today, batting Brandon second and Franchez third, i’ll predict a Giants win. Granted, the production capacity of the LU would be a bit front-loaded with Torres, Belt, Sanchez followed by a who knows what middle order and not much sting at the tail. Nevertheless, i think the On Base factor might result in some RBI’s from unusual suspects and enough gas in the tank for Drrrty to bring it home.

Crawford earned an extended look with last night’s heroics. Never underestimate the psychological element in athletes. Provided Brandon does not start swinging for the fences ~ tempting, i’m sure ~ the lift he just got could give him the edge to be a .250 ML hitter. Being a skilled defensive SS, fielding behind a powerhouse pitching staff, that kinda offensive level with occasional pop, could land him a fulltime job. What a story if he pulls it off.

  6. Sierra Nevada's avatar Sierra Nevada said, on May 28, 2011 at 9:00 am

I am not writing off the season. I still think the Giants are odds on to win the division. But the playoffs are another matter; with the loss of Posey, the Giants went from being one of the front runners to a long shot.

Of course, that analysis changes if Sabean makes some trades. Replacing Posey is impossible, but replacing his bat is do-able.

  7. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 28, 2011 at 9:02 am

Whether Crawford is the answer remains to be seen- but Burriss will never be the regular SS. As far as not hitting in the minors, Burriss hadn’t hit AT ALL above Low-A (.165 at SJ, .258 in just 60 AB at Fresno, with zero pop). Manny has been being groomed to be a utility guy and that’s his future…
They’re not going to say they’re looking for a catcher, it would be dumb to say that…. but thry’re looking for a catcher…
If they’re going to drill Fielder, June 24 at home is the time to do it..

Pat the Bat was swinging like a barndoor in a hurricane yesterday. I’m not talking pining him for the duration, or especially even, a release. But it is plumb, pure, plain, poppycock to call up Belt and relegate him to the pine while Burrell did not produce in a production spot. Giants under Bochy have been a mix n match L.U. pretty much all season. Belt is a major part of the Giants future. Burrell MAY stick around for the season. Huff won himself some time yesterday with his two for four effort. So the logical dropzone is Pat the Bat.

I’m not gonna go so far as to say the Snakes are “for real,” but they’re not doing it with smoke and mirrors either. People like to harp on our difficult schedule to start the year with all the road games, but the Snakes haven’t had a cake walk either. They didn’t have to play as many road games, but their competition was stiffer than ours. Their pitching is better (it couldn’t get any worse) than last year. And say what you want about Gibby, but he has those guys playing hard and, more importantly, believing. I’m expecting them to be a royal pain in the ass the rest of the way.

I sure hope Belt remembered the cream and sugar for Bochy’s coffee this morning. Asinine.

    • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 28, 2011 at 9:50 am

DBacks have exactly zero chance. BP counts Buster’s loss as a minus-3 ( blog potatoes always over estimate a players worth). Before some of the other injuries they projected 95.
Here is the up to date projection, which I’ll take over Doomer Dennises’ :
      SF 89-73
      COL 84-78
      LA 82-80
      AZ 79-83
      SD 74-88

Due to the now weak NL West, Giants have the best chance in the NL to make the playoffs at 87 percent.

When Pablo is back, the SS will either be Crawford ( if he hits at all) or Tejada. Nobody else is in the picture. If it’s Tejada, Burriss and Font will be the reserves, Crawford down. If it’s Crawford, Burriss vs. Font for a spot.

I have to believe that Bochy had legitimate reasons insofar as matchups for not playing Belt the last two games . . . insofar as him not playing last night, Huff did get two hits.

Judging from that lineup, Giants lose this afternoon. Looks like one of those Right/Lefthander scenarios, but i prefer the hot hand. Does Bochy have a reason for not playing Belt today, or is it merely an excuse? If Burrell again does not produce in the 3-hole there’s gonna be at least one mighty pissed off longtime Giants fan.

“unusual” moves? That’s twinspeak for “only a fuckwad manning the latrines in Room B would do that.”

      • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 28, 2011 at 10:17 am

Pay attention: Belt was only called up because Travis was hurt. Brandon was slumping in Fresno, but they wanted a LH bat for the bench. They aren’t starting Belt reegularly because they dson’t want the earlier failure repeated. If he’d been hitting, he’d be starting.(.222 last 10)..

the same points that i made earlier still apply: you just need to stay near .500 until after the all-star break. divisions are rarely won before and teams that do well in the post-season come in on a roll, battling just to get there. this is a TEAM. not just 2-3 guys in the middle of the order that you have to get past. anyone can beat you. the key is that people like crawford and burris and nate and pat and cody and aaron and tejada and andres all step up at different times to make a difference. there will be some brutal loses out there where it will look like they’ve never seen a pitched ball before. but this group has NO quit in them. If you weren’t prepared for another ride this season, you weren’t paying attention.

btw: werth is such an obnoxious punk. he’s hitting .240 and complaining that they’re not “winning”. wow. the nats. not winning. who would thought? hows that bank account asshole.

I don’t like Rowand and Burrell both starting at the same time, because they’re basically the same guy now. Two guys slumping badly, who are swinging and missing a lot of pitches. Huff is almost that guy, but is getting the occasional clutch hit.
I’m not diggin’ the platooning of Torres. I don’t think Rowand should be getting many starts the rest of the way. He’s in his usual going-down-the-toilet mode. They’ve gotten the most they’re going to get out of him this season.

When Burrell’s OPS drops below 700, he’ll be the same guy at the plate as Rowand. It’ll also be the sure sign that you may as well just play Belt or Schierholtz every day. After Posey’s injury, they really should find out if Pat the Bat is no more. As it stands, he’s having a better year than every other hitter in the line up today, Franchez excepted.

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on May 28, 2011 at 11:20 am

Since Dirty is going today, I wanted to post an idea I had from the last homestand with the Marlins: Sanchez for Stanton. Marlins would probably want a bit more. They don’t appear to need pitching, but they have no left-handed starter. Dirty would also be closer to his Puerto Rican roots. And Lord, we could use Stanton’s bat.

Was thinking of going out to the park to cheer on lame Nats vs. Pads, but its hot and humid here and my NoCal, fog-raised system doesn’t appreciate the summer stank. Nats are a lifeless bunch without Ryan Zimmerman, who was supposed to be gone two weeks, but has disappeared. To add to someone’s earlier post, Werth is one of those guys who benefits from better players ahead and behind him. Left exposed, you might get .260/22/78. His contract however had as much to do with skinflint ownership needing to show the fanbase they were doing something, particularly after Strasburg went down.

  39. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 28, 2011 at 12:31 pm

Florida will trade Stanton in his 5th year maybe. No fucking way right now. OK, maybe for Dirty, Wheeler, Surkamp, Neal… seriously, there is no way on God’s Greenish Earth they are trading Stanton.

    • EdGdsnInExile's avatar EdGdsnInExile said, on May 28, 2011 at 1:21 pm

I know Twin, but I tried to marshall support for it! Another negative from the Marlins standpoint would be that Dirty would be relatively expensive for them. He’s making 4 plus million this year; can’t remember if that’s contract or arbitration award–if the latter, he’s potentially even more expensive.

I’m still pissed and in full on whine mode, so please forgive the following “master of the obvious” rant.

The difference between the Fielder play at the play and the one by scrub douche Cousins is the difference between clean and dirty. Fielder came in to a guy completely blocking the plate in a situation where a slide is an out. Fielder did as much as he could to knock the ball loose and no more, he targeted the ball in Whitey’s grip with his forearms when he hit. Believe me, he could have leveled Whitey MUCH harder.

Scrub Douche, OTOH, went all out to completely level a catcher in the process of making a catch and turning to tag. Posey was NOT blocking the plate, there was a lane to slide. Scrub Douche did not improve his chance of scoring, he had an equal chance to beat the tag as he had to knock the ball out. His target was Posey, not the ball. A zero athleticism, no skills scrub move. Fuck him.

    • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on May 28, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Totally correct, people are just pissed at Fielder for past transgressions.

    • EdGdsnInExile's avatar EdGdsnInExile said, on May 28, 2011 at 1:27 pm

Sierra, saw your earlier post about listening to the game with your son. Hope that remains a good memory.

I agree with you and Twin about Posey. Bengie Molina pointed out in Baggerly/Steward’s interview that Buster had dangerously exposed himself to the runner without having the ball, rather than getting the ball and going for the runner. Man, he must so want that play over. On the other hand, Whitey had time, thanks to a great throw and slow runner, to get the ball and position himself–in his case–on the line! Purposely. Whitey was blocking, Buster was not, although exposed. And as you point out, Cousins had a better chance of being safe by sliding anyway. Prince had no choice but to try and break it up, Cousins did.

Gomez is 2 fer 6 (both homers) vs Wolf. You’d think if he was gonna break out vs a lefty, today might be the day.

Hey, on this date back in ’98, Buck Showalter intentionally walked Bonds with the bases juiced and two outs in the B9 and the Snakes held on for a 8-7 win.

I can’t recall the next batter, but I believe he lined out to the RF who made a nice play to end the game.
I thought the move was fucking brilliant myself. I like Mgrs. who thinks outside the box. I wouldn’t of let BB beat me in that situation either.

Well, as someone who’s kept score of hundreds of baseball games, it’s the very typical home bias in scorekeeping. Give the hitter the advantage when it’s the hometeam, give the error when it’s the visiting team batting.

He needs to block that ball. Burriss is a liability at SS. Crawford may end up not hitting much, but his glove appears to be rock solid. The way this team is constructed, they cannot be giving up any free 90 ft. Defense is/should be paramount with this club. I’d stick the kid in at SS at wish ’em the best of luck.

Yeah, it was a poor throw.
And, in that situation, Burriss’ job was to knock it down, not let it through, at all costs with less than 2 down. Kuiper said that, not me, and he played in MLB, not you. Burriss skipped out of the way, didn’t even make a try. That was pathetic.
Major blame on Burriss, he F’d up, and that run basically cost the game…
