A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bill Hall to the rescue? and Nate the Great Comes Through Again

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 11, 2011

Uh, just saw this. Bill Hall sucks. If he couldn’t hit at MinuteMade Park he is done-zo. Right handers ABUSE that left field wall (and beyond). He could barely hit it out of the infield. He’ll be worse than Tejada. Idiotic signing……..

I think everyone is starting to notice that Nate  is a different hitter late in the game (as I pointed out last week.. Kuiper discussed it on his show, too). I’m fine with him starting because the alternative is Rowand or Burrell starting in his place and that just won’t do. But he’s just the perfect secret weapon to bring off the bench to win you a game late. As I said last week, I think Nate is our MVP this season. In fact, time for a poll…….

The Flap Fantasy League Standings

(things are getting wild with NoWhitey taking a precipitous drop, NoTalent showing he’s got ALL the talent with a 5 pt jump and a stranglehold on first place, and BB’s hits the 40 pt mark for the first time in a month. With the bounty he just secured from our BLOCKBUSTER trade, there’s no telling where he might end the season).

I don’t know flav…I think the bill hall signing is fine! no risk, gets a couple starts, maybe hits for us like with red six year before…can’t be fun playing on the Astros these days…maybe they’re thinking he’ll be better the. tejada, he did have 18 hrs last year compared to tejada’s 14. I do think they team will move on and manny will get some more play time. bummed for Freddy, cause he was making his case for all star team starter!!

There’s no downside to the Hall signing. The Orioles, Nats, RSox and Yankees will still be interested in him if the Giants don’t have room on the bench. For those of you who think the deal is “idiotic,” even though the Giants currently have both room and need for a guy like him, I hope you get a chance to choke on the kind of crow you’re starting to taste now as Miggy begins to play again.

  3. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 11, 2011 at 10:07 am

It’s been pointed out long ago that he’s a role player. This year he’s hitting .237 when he starts, .324 off the bench. Career it’s more of the same- .258 starting, .302 off the bench. MVP? Sure, most valuable bench player.
PH, late inning defense, spot starts… that’s all he should be.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 11, 2011 at 10:14 am

well, Kuip and Kruk BOTH called him the team MVP on their respective shows. Byrnsie did too, though that might not be an endorsement to like……

Well, we all know that Flavoro always agrees with K and K….look, you wanna make your MVP a guy who is only marginally better than Rowand as a starter, go for it.( As a starter: Nate .237 .295 .677( BA, OBP, OPS) Aaron 240 .293 .651.. We all love how Nate has performed off the bench. ..and off the bench is how it should be.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on June 11, 2011 at 11:34 am

As I posted the last time the Nate is Great cheerleading picked up, Nate’s offensive numbers late in the game are pretty poor — when he starts. When he gets up for the third time in a game he’s a relatively easy out. Off the bench late in a game, however, he has had his great moments.

  4. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 11, 2011 at 10:13 am

there is absolutely downside to the Hall signing if he gets inserted into Franchez’ 2nd base spot and hits like shit. Xoot, you better hold off on waving the Miggy flag just yet–a few games doesn’t mean shit. If he’s turned it around, that’s great but I believe he has NOT and this is just a little flame before a full on burn out……
Bill Hall is not the answer. Sabean is trying to hit on another “Burrell” with this move.
Why not just let Burris finally get to play his natural position? If he succeeds he gives us something we need–another fast player who can change the game with his speed. What does Hall give you? Versatility? Look, just because he can play a lot of positions is hardly a good thing if he plays them while hitting .200. Didn’t we learn our lesson with DeRosa on that one? And Tejada? Bill Hall…. Totally fucking idiotic……..

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on June 11, 2011 at 11:39 am

I don’t need to hold off feeling good that Miggy is showing some life in the field and at the plate. If he falters, he does. But predicting failure gets awfully close to wanting it in situations like this.

And Hall can play all over, at any time. Burriss will have his chance. In fact, with Hall on the bench, Burriss probably won’t have to pack 5 different gloves any more.

  5. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 11, 2011 at 10:25 am

Hall is a low-average strikeout machine with a bit of pop who can play several positions. That should cover both sides of the argument. No need to put him in as starting second baseman. Burriss should get that shot. He has contributed.

Appears that with Sanchez down there’s another Sanchez rising. According to Schulman, says MLBTR, 21 Y.O. Hector Sanchez has been promoted from San Jose to Fresno. City-wise that sounds strange, but the move is Cali League (high A) to AAA. The kid catcher was raking with the almost always highly successful S.J. team and now gets to play with the bigger pre-adolescents to see whether or not he will be MLB ready this year. Meanwhile, Sabean has wires out all over the place searching for catchers while patting Eli on the back.

  6. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 11, 2011 at 10:42 am

I might change my tune on the Hall signing if I thought Burris WAS going to get a shot at the 2nd base gig but I don’t see it happening. Sabean has no problem giving Whitey the chance to earn the C job. Will he give Burris the same considerations? The Hall signing says that’s unlikely…..

If Hall is the pick up I would have rather seen Aviles from KC who was recently put on waivers. The two hit about the same but Aviles is a bit younger, steals more bases and offerS more infield flexibility being able to play 2nd, 3rd and SS.

To say that the Hall signing “sucks” when the Giants are RUNNING OUT OF INFIELDERS is just idiotic, flavor. The fact is that the Giants have bought a cheap stopgap that will keep the bench from RUNNING OUT OF PLAYERS. This was a triage/survival mode signing. The Giants just spent 300,000 dollars to keep from having to see an outfielder filling an infield position late in a game or in case of another injury.

That is just a stupid take, flavor. You have an issue with who starts, fine. But to complain about a low cost signing that keeps disaster at bay temporarily is just dumb.

Bill Hall is typical Sabes trolling the flea market for scraps. Last year, he found some real gold among the pyrite. So for a few weeks at least, whatever. Maybe a change of scenery polishes Hall into some gold. This just illuminates what the Giants think of the quality of their high minor infielders. Whether they’re right, who knows? Crawford wouldn’t have pogo sticked up to the bigs if it hadn’t been an emergency, and he’s showed he can cut the mustard…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 11, 2011 at 1:30 pm

Twin: Yesterday slightly before gametime i mentioned four relievers who are having stellar seasons at Richmond. You quickly dismissed them, claiming they are not considered prospects. That left the question kinda dangling. Who does not consider them prospects? Giants upper management? Their manager and coaches? Most M.L. scouts? Independent raters? Then the question becomes WHY they aren’t thought ML material. Do they lack a sufficient repertoire? Certainly not control issues as per the total paucity of walks. No heat? Remember Stu Miller?

I realize that it is possible to be worse than Whiteside defensively, but you have to think that the Giants are going to give Sanchez a serious look in AAA as part of due diligence. I still think that a trade for an established guy is the better option, but it will be interesting if Sanchez makes a case in Fresno.

    • Sierra Nevada's avatar Sierra Nevada said, on June 11, 2011 at 2:39 pm

I’ll fess up. I thought Whiteside was serviceable. He started a game that I attended two years ago. He showed decent fielding skills on some bunts, throwing guys out. But clearly I didn’t even come close to understanding that he lacked the arm to make consistent throws to 2nd. And holy cow, I did not see his poor blocking skills. He not only lets too many balls go by, but he seems to lose track of the ball almost every time after it gets by him.

Timmy needs no excuses. He sucks right now. The guy’s performance over the last three years has bought him some rope. But right now he is the least dependable of the 5. Last year he was able to hold it to one month of suckage. Here’s hoping it can be limited in scope this year as well.

The hitters on this squad have been in the dumper all season, the main reason the team is still afloat is the pitching staff, all of them. If SFdoesn’t start hitting, or get some hitters, the staff is going to likely fall in August / Sept because of working under such stress all seasothe entire season. With Franchez gone now, and maybe out for the year, the injuries may have gone too far for this team to make the playoffs, even in this crap division. Fucking Lincecum. Some fucking superman he turned out to be. Ruined my goddamn fantasy league general manager of the year bid and lost me hundreds of dollars in bets I shouldn’t have made because betting on baseball is always stupid. Moreover, if Lincecum had been pitching worth a shit the past few weeks, this team would be in first place and they’d be selling out the stadium every game. Instead, look where the Giants are. Meanwhile, the little run stuffs his face with gigantic burgers and spliffs, and tosses money around like he earned it. Come on. Let’s all pile the opprobrium on the little guy.

He’s currenbtly the least effective starter and criticizing him is totally fair. In fact, criticism of the guy who is supposed to lead the staff is more than fair- unless you have a double standard.

Timmy has built up a lot of capital with fans over the years. They’re not going to be as quick to get negative about him. Maybe that’s a difference between East Coast and West Coast. The East Coast fans would be quicker to start booing him. But I never liked that about East Coast fans. I like the fact that West Coast fans stay more supportive longer.

The players with the most talent deserve the most criticism when they fail. Don’t know how that can be argued. If Johnny Depp gives a shitty performance, does an honest critic go after the “third man in elevator”?

Lincecum’s pitching poorly. He did the same thing for about four weeks last season. The performance speaks for itself. You want to call him shitty, when it’s obvious he’s shitty, and pretend you’re “criticising”? Do you really think he’s not trying? If so, then you should want him gone. The Giants should dump him for a catcher, immediately. He’s not Zito; he’s worth a lot, even if he’s hit a bad patch. If you don’t want him gone, however, then don’t you want him to pitch like the Giants ace again? Where’s that sentiment? Just how does screaming about him being shitty right now reflect respect for what he has done for this team (in contrast, to, say, Zito) and hope for a revival of that strength soon? It doesn’t, of course.

LIncecum’s bad patch is as tough to take as Posey’s injury, or Freddy’s injury. Sad, infuriating, threatening — because we’re not talking about Zito, or about bench players. Losing these guys means a lot. Again, that speaks for itself.

Ah, spent the day at Great America. I don’t understand how admission for me and my daughter is $89 and yet there is nothing but trailer trash, rude, aggressive, potty mouthed punk kids running around (and into) people all day. Great America sucks……
I checked the game throughout the day on the phone. Listen to a little on KNBR–the part I heard had Krukow going on and on in great detail about how this is a mechanical issue with Timmy, that Gardner/Raggs and everyone are aware of it and that this is just some quick fix thing that they haven’t found the fix to yet. He also noted that it had to be mechanical since his velocity is fine.
Well, Timmy has been horrendous no matter what the reason. I don’t think it has anything to do with “checking out”, not sure where you got that from Twin. But it’s possible that he does have some mental weakness when things start to turn and it doesn’t allow him to get himself back together on the mound. I’m not questioning his mental approach or anything, and I’m sure a lot of you are saying “look what a dominant stud he was in the playoffs, you can’t do that with a weak mental approach.” BUT< Timmy was always pitching strong, he didn't have any adversity in the playoffs—it's like riding a "lone F" win to an easy victory in horse racing. Whatever it is, he's fucking the Giants with his starts………
And if one more person calls up Marty Lurie and says "Let's trade Zito for Jorge Posada" I might seriously consider a call in to one of his shows. Zito for Posada is so wrong and fantastical on some many levels. Posada is completely done, watch him take a few hacks before you decide you want him. Plus, there's no way this "Yankee lifer is gonna agree to be a rent-a-catcher in the NL for a few months and fuck up his *pristine* baseball card of Yankee perfection. And finally, and I don't understand why people don't get this: Zito sucks! The Yankees, despite their need for LH pitching, are not in the business of adding expensive pitchers who are currently pitching like shit or who have been pitching like shit for years.–they'll be the first to give a guy 100 million off what he did the year before–they're all about signing re-treads though always at a discount. They would not ever in a million years take on 4o million and throw a guy out there who would get eaten alive by the AL East hitters. It's poppycock, that's what it is….
The KNBR radio show guys should be embarrassed by the novice shit they have to put on the air daily……..

When you’re getting hit hard and continue to throw the same pitch in the same location, you’re either mailing it in or you’re a fucking idiot. But again, the idea that ANYONE gets slack is bullshit. Baseball is very properly “what have you done for me lately?” Until he gets his ass srtraightened out he’s fair game-and because of his status, he should get it more than a Dirty, a Tejada, anybody else-not less.

  72. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on June 11, 2011 at 7:21 pm

Of course anyone not performing is open to criticism, especially if they’re dogging it. I would like to believe that Tim’s not dogging it but rather there’s something wrong that needs to get fixed. We saw that last August and he turned it back around, so that’s why some here are not criticizing him. Hopefully it’s just a mechanical glitch that will get spotted and fixed. It’s hard to criticize our “best” pitcher if there’s a flaw in his delivery that’s screwing things up.

But I also wouldn’t be surprised if some pitchers — and Tim might be one of them — start getting a bit pissed off about no run support. That could factor in at some point. If Timmy “gave up” less than halfway thru the game today because he figured, oh well, it’s over, the team’s not going to score, might as well just throw BP to the other team, THAT’s worth criticizing.

Morning in Saigon — I hoped to wake up to news about Freddy’s injury, but don’t see an update on the severity. Anyone hear anything?

Paul– good take. In addition to the shit run support you can toss in that he has to throw to a double A catcher. That can’t be good for focus and motivation. I haven’t checked in Franchez but when a dude goes into a head first slide, slumps over and is seen mouthing “it’s my shoulder!”, well, I’m not too interested in finding out something I already know. He’s done for the year.,
And you know what? Losing Franchez is about a tenth of what it was to lose Posey. Franchez has been decent this year, I’m disappointed he’s gotten so many MVP votes. His defense has been great and he’s had some big hits but he’s also maddeningly gone to the opposite field and/or a bunt when the situation called for swinging away. Giving at bats away for no reason is hardly what your *team MVP* does…….

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on June 11, 2011 at 7:50 pm

He’s also been excellent in the field. He’s getting “mvp” votes because he’s fucking good, and his loss has thrown the IF into turmoil. Gillaspie, Crawford and Burriss are gonna drive Huff crazy, and Pablo and Hall won’t stabilize thngs much. Meanwhile, Nate hits well off the bench. Notice how well he did today, on his second and third ABs? True to form.
