A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Why Don’t we See More Salary for Salary Trades?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 20, 2011

I think Mr DJ Loo has taken over Bagg’s Blog. His Soriano/Zambrano for Zito/Rowand has his finger prints all over it. Of course, I don’t see any team ever trading for Zito, regardless of how much salary they get to dump. About the only way I see a trade like that going down is if the Giants paid most of Zito’s contract, too. And that would just be idiotic. Plus, Sabean would never take in a lunatic like Zambrano……..

Why don’t we see more of those bad salary for bad salary deals? Does it ever happen? I can’t think of any. The only two reasons I can think of is that most of those high salary guys have no-trade clauses and they kill the deals and/or GM’s are afraid of how the  deal will turn out. Not only do these GM’s look like idiots for giving out mega-deals that fail but can you imagine how dumb they’d look if the bust player they traded turns it around on his new team? That would be *double* the reason to fire you. In fact, the Angels GM, Tony Reagins, is probably looking at the unemployment line at the end of the season if his mindblowingly stupid acquisition of Vernon Wells continues to look as bad as it does today……..

I agree that there could be nothing to gain from adding Zambrano and Soriano to our roster. #1, we have a 5-man rotation, why add another starter? I still think the Yanks may still get desperatte enough that they may ponder making a deal if we pony up half the salary remaining on Zito’s deal. And I dont think Sabean and Giant fans will bemoan the fact if Zito “turns” it around and pitches .500 ball and a 4.5 ERA for the Yanks. 4.5 ERA can cut it in the AL and at Yankee Stadium, it aint cutting it in the NL….

I am continuing my climb to 80 points by the end of the month…90 by the end of August…victory in October!!!

I don’t know if it will be a “salary dump” trade, but if you believe Krukow this morning Sabean will have one, if not TWO deals done by the time we play Tuesday. Might as well come from the same team so you can cut down on the paperwork. Beltran and Reyes works for me.

while I’m sure the cubs would love to have the Gamer, Zito would get killed in that division. He could not survive having to pitch in the other warm weather hitters parks (Cincy, STL, Hou, Mil). Same deal in NY…righties would take his outside slop out the yard, and the rest of the division has boston, toronto and balt, all hitters parks. He’s lucky enough to pitch here, and he still can’t beat anyone. I would think also Cubs major priority would be acquiring young guys and dumping salary, in other words just the opposite of what this deal represents.
torres OB is fine, it’s his lack of pop that’s way down from last year, and what has driven his OPS lower than 2010. 3-4-5 of Sando Huff Ross is as good as it’s gonna get. burriss and hall are not high OB guys either…when no one is hitting, like now, shuffling the LU doesn’t matter much.

They would not only have to be desperate but out of their f-=mind.

Good point about NY Wilie. It’s been highlighted before but this obsession with the Yankees continues. Agree. He would likely get eaten alive in that environment and stadium facing AL east opponents.

I noticed in the Clemons obits how he listened to Junior walker and King curtis. I loved junior walker’s funky sax that represented a different slant on motown, and king curtis was all over the atlantic soul explosion led by wilson pickett and otis redding out of muscle shoals alabama and the stax/volt studios. Those horn charts were fabulous; I had all those LPs as a kid.
It’s great to see a lot of that stuff on youtube and listen to the wonderful sounds of 60s r & b.

I’ll tell you what I would do: Rowand, Crawford, Belt & Runzler for Hanley. His power and the fact that he’s signed make him a better fit for us than Reyes. Marlins have to take some salary back so we stick ’em with Rowand.

    • willieD's avatar willieD said, on June 20, 2011 at 9:24 am

they’d be looking for a gm too in addition to a mgr. Rowand replaces Hanley in the LU? Marlins fans, both of them, would flock to see that i’m sure.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 20, 2011 at 9:49 am

THAT’S the Loo-Weinie we all know! Now if Flavor would make that dumb ass trade proposal the POTD, everything would be normal.

    • SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on June 20, 2011 at 10:35 am

I like it! We’d be giving up 2 outfielders in the deal though, so it would be nice to get one back. I say we ask ’em to throw in Cousins.

  11. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on June 20, 2011 at 9:50 am

For the Marlins, it’s not about replacing Hanley in the LU – it’s about dumping his salary and crappy attitude (which I would welcome). Rowand’s $ just offsets that a little for the Giants’ sake. Plus he can be a leader and a good guy in their fucked up clubhouse. Next year their new stadium will be the attraction, not the team.

Sabes needs to start earning his this year’s salary. As if it were needed for emphasis, this weekend’s disastrous hitting versus two unknowns and a known was a total embarrassment. No doubt a coupla new players have to come in here. Doesn’t matter where, if they can hit at least .250. The offense has gone from piss poor to scary poor. It was already bad when Posey and Sanchez were playing. If this division weren’t crap, it would be panic time right now. Luckily, it is crap, so far…

In other words, Sabes will make moves. He has to, otherwise this team has no shot at the playoffs. The Rocks will make a move later on in the season, the Giants have to have sticks to parry…

      • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on June 20, 2011 at 11:07 am

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 20, 2011 at 11:14 am

He can be patient because the division is crap. There’s still 6 weeks to the deadline, but he can’t wait until the very end. This team isn’t going to go into a major tailspin because of the pitching, but the stress on a staff from virtually no run support every game is worrying for the staff long haul…

Reminds me of being in the outfield bleachers one time at Jack Murphy Stadium watching a Pads-Braves game. The Pads were up and Claudell Washington and Dale Murphy were standing next to each other in the outfield shooting the shit during a pitching change. Claudell’s pants were tight as hell and Murphy’s looked like they were about 3 sizes too big. We were giving Murphy crap about how baggy his pants were and to get some like Claudell’s. They didn’t turn around, but you could tell they were kind of amused by that.
I heard it said once that Claudell was the rare player who, despite a long career, never had a better year than his first one.

Talk of wrestlers, and no mention of Rocky Johnson and Pepper Gonzalez?
Yeah, I watched wrestling, but I was a KID, give me a break. I can’t fathom adults watching it.
And I cringe now in retrospect at the casual racism of those days- Rocky Johnson was the black guy with the super hard head, and Pepper was the Mexican with the super hard beer-belly, and etc., etc. The racist stuff was rampant and embarrassing to think of now. I think there was a Middle Eastern guy called The Great Mephisto or something like that. He always looked crazed and drooled out of the side of his mouth.

And “pro” wrestlers are religious in the way they won’t admit how fake it is. Like magicians protecting trade secrets or something. Like we can’t tell they’re pulling their punches and stomping the mat instead of the other wrestler.

Was pepper martin the guy who used the famous “sleeper” hold? Growing up near Sactown, we had “Big Time Wrestling” hosted by Hank Renner—live from Memorial Auditorium. Some of my friends actually got to attend in person a few times. I had catch the action on Channel 40.

The Great Mephisto always cheated. He had a loaded boot. The ref would somehow get distracted, and then Mephisto would tap his boot, put the foreign object in the toe part of the boot, and then kick the other guy in the head and knock him out. What an outrage! This website notes that eventually Pat Patterson was able to get the boot from Mephisto and chase Mephisto out of the ring and into oblivion with it. Maybe Mephisto had gotten tired of wrestling.

I think one of the most overblown fears in baseball is the 2 strike bunt attempt, especially for a pitcher in a sacrifice situation. What is the big tragedy of fouling the ball off and striking out? Better than a DP, and no worse than a conventional strikeout. These are the things that must be resolved on off days…

  61. SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on June 20, 2011 at 5:31 pm

I’ve covered this before, but my take on bunting is that the ONLY time I want to see a bunt attempt is when you have a pitcher at the plate who actually knows how to bunt. If that is the case, then I don’t have any problem with trying to get the bunt down with 2 strikes. Otherwise, Cito Gaston and I want to see players swing the fucking bat.

No one can really do it today (maybe Pierre) . . . Great bunters from the past are Rod Carew, Brett Butler, Phil Rizzuto (Little Scooter Rizzuto was considered as the greatest bunter of his era which is saying something considering contemporaries like Jackie Robinson and Pee Wee Reese of the Dodgers). Many argue that perhaps Ty Cobb was the best bunter ever, if not then at least the greatest drag bunter ever.

I can appreciate the bunt if done correctly . . . almost a lost art today. Here is an excellent article on bunting and the greatest bunters in MLB history . . .

For what itz worth, here’s a stat on managers and their proclivities to order sac bunts and issue intentional walks. The higher the number, the more “traditional” the managing style. Bochy is characterized here as slightly less traditional than average…

  64. SanDawg's avatar SanDawg said, on June 20, 2011 at 6:09 pm

Good stuff, Snark. Now that Cito lost his gig this chart will help me find my new favorite manager regarding bunt strategy. One of the reasons I’ve always liked Bochy is that he doesn’t seem to bunt much–especially with position players.
Issuing intentional walks I’ve never given much thought to—-though in the Barry era I used to say that they ought to allow the player to have the option of accepting the walk or resetting the count and remaining the batter. (I almost brought this up when Zumie mentioned his proposed rule about being called out when a batter throws his bat in the stands) By the way–did they ever come and get that bat from the guy in Arizona who caught Bill Hall’s bat in the stands? It looked like they were gonna let him keep it, which is pretty damn cool. Don’t they usually send someone to get the bat?

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on June 20, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Pujols is hurt now (where’s the outcry?), but I never understood why teams pitch to him far more than Barry. Pujols could be in the middle of one of his murderous streaks, but still get more pitches to hit in one game than Bonds got in a week. As for intentional walks, there’s a place for ’em in the game from a situational POV, but I hate it being used to render one particular player impotent, like they did to Bonds. I would agitate for a rule change that in any one game, the penalty for intentionally walking the same guy goes up. First intentional walk, he takes one base. Second, he gets two bases, third in same game, he moves three bases. Fourth — well there is no fourth. You can’t intentionally walk a guy four times in a game. That way, the fans get to see a star or a hot hitter do what they paid to see — the guy hit, not jog to first. You can argue they’ll just pitch around him three times — same diff. But, I argue that pitching around allows for mistake pitches — and a guy can hit those….

This pitcher on San Diego (Frieri) has hit Scutaro and Ortiz with the bases loaded . . . 2 runs in thus far. You have to feel for a pitcher going through something like this. There probably isn’t a rock big enough to hide under . . .

  70. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 20, 2011 at 7:07 pm

This is becoming downright hilarious now . . . Mr. Scribner has now allowed another single and walked another run in. 8 runs scored so far. Yeah, a lot to be said for the finality of a Grand Slam, but a “Death of a thousand cuts” via walks, singles, and hit batters, is definitely worse.
