A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Great Win and The Contestants For the Tickets Reveal Themselves

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 1, 2011

After Burriss bungled that ball I was preparing myself for this loss. In a weird, dysfunctional way, I was almost asking for it just to be pissed off. And when Bosch (not interested in how to spell his name) hit that liner I was certain the game was over. And then *poof* we win. Crazy.

Here are the players for the tix. I know it was short notice and if you win and can’t go I’ll give em away.

Giants Runs                                      Tigers runs                             total sbs

Me                                      7                        13               5

MacDog                             10                      12              3

BillBill                              10                        7                3

Kevin                                 9                         4                2

Chuck                                 8                         7               3

San Dog                            13                        7               4

Dennis                              10                       11              3

BirdDog                            9                         14             5

BigSarge                           8                           7              2

Kokonuts                         11                         7              4

Ted                                       14                       9              4

Sorry about the formatting, I could have *snipped* it or done some word doc, this was easier but it looks like the columns aren’t lining up. I’m not sweating it………

Quick contest but it will keep our misery away from certain painful realities. That could be baseball or life, you pick………

Again, thank you ANNA for offering up your tix for this game. She gave 2 to a buddy of mine last week and they had a great time. One thing about this blog that I will never get over, the generosity of everyone is something to appreciate. It’s human nature unfolding before our eyes; often it’s the human nature that is the exact opposite of your usual anonymous angry blogging sports fan……….

Just had an idea about a player to pursue: Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates. He’s only 24, improving each year, cheaper and longer-lasting than Jose Reyes. Of course, given we made out with the Sanchez for Bowker/Alderson trade, Pirates may not budge. But I’m going to Bucs-Nats tomorrow night and will scout him out!

BTW, the whole Brian Wilson dugout breakdown was pure show-biz. Good TV. The man knows the cameras are on. Like it or hate it, he’s an awesome pitcher but he knows he’s in show-biz. Just like Willie Mays situating his cap so it flew off his head when he tagged up from 3rd

You know, before Margaret Hamilton got the WWOTW part, they considered the sexy and lovely (and McCarthy blacklisted) Gale Sondegaard for the part. But, they said what I just wrote…she was too sexy and lovely…

If the Pirates traded McCutchen their fans would burn down their stadium. They probably should have already done it…….
What’s unfortunate is that there really isn’t any ONE GUY out there who we can realistically trade for. Sabes did great last year with the WW guys and the situational reliever pick ups. But if you want the *McCutchen’s* and the *Reyes”, you have to be operating in an entirely different sphere………

My gut, Flav, is that after the two losses to the Cubs, the likelihood of Sabean doing something bigger increased to about 50/50. I generally agree with you that the pitchers are up to the task, but there’s also a point at which the offense’s negativity corrodes even the mental toughness of the pitchers. I think we’re approaching that. If Sanchez or Posey were coming back, you might be able to hang on. But it’s getting late in the game for Huff, Torres, Ross. The problem is none of the squad are doing much with the bat, save Pablo, so all we would have to offer is pitching, minor leaguers, and draft picks…

I forgot to add one important fact: I love Judy Garland! I recall the first time I saw the “Wizard” I was about 6 yo old. I memorized all the songs. Toto? Screw that do. I was interested in Dorothy. When she put on those “Ruby Shoes,” I was hooked. I’ll refrain from telling you gentlemen just how many times I’ve watched Judy and the “Wizard of Oz,” but just between you and me, I’m in the Lollipop Guild and I sure the hell wanna get the fuck outta Kansas.

One last thought and I’m done: Crawford is quietly saving us runs with his defense–great instincts and positioning. And I really admire what he’s doing offensively. He’s basically acknowledged he’s overmatched, is not trying to hide that, so is seeing as many pitches as he can. This helps his eye, gives him experience, and helps the team by wearing the pitcher down. And I do think he’s going to hit after a while. His defense would be enough, except the rest of the team hasn’t come around offensively.

A lot of leads on Wilson’s tirade are about him been a kook or weird. Funny, I guess the national media doesn’t get it. Big surprise there. I’ve never really thought Wilson was any weirder than the next guy. Listen to him talk. He’s a smart guy with a quick wit. He just goes for maximum effect with his appearance. I guess only on SF is he considered normal. Or I’m just a little strange myself. Probably both.

  17. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 2, 2011 at 9:42 am

Not feeling real confident about today’s chances with Zito vs Scherzer. Vogelsong on Sunday, on the other hand, holds some promise. Detroit has some lumber, but the Giants win either of these upcomings and they go home with a winning road trip and a 24-24 road record.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. With Sanchez out and Fontenot coming down with that groin strain, Sabean reached into the dumpster and hauled out Bill Hall to fill in. Ouch. Not only was the dude Zero for five last night, but he totaled 10 LOB with five of them in scoring position. The good news is that the lil Cajun should be back from Fresno rehab for the Fourth. Meanwhile Brandon Belt is rehabbing for starters at San Jose and Bochy is of no mind to bring him back to The Show before he’s for sure ready. If Huff does not resume his second half uptick tendency, we may see Belt before September.

Stewart is looking more and more like a keeper. Sure clutch last night and has a solid peg from behind the plate. We’re not looking at a starting catcher here, but he’s an upgrade from NoWhitey. Though hitting at only a .198 average, Crawford has a decent batting eye for drawing walks and would probably rank in the top third of defensive shortstops. An experiment of batting Crawford second might result in his fairly frequent walks being a bit more useful than when he bats in front of the pitcher.

Rowand and Nate turned in a couple pretty good performances last night. Offensive production from the outfielders should be a given on any successful team. Somehow that pair contrived to fill in the gap a bit for MIA Torres. Don’t know what it is with Andres, but his production has been spotty at best. Same can be said for Huff. Still don’t like him batting cleanup, but who the hell else ya got? Things do get a bit dicey when 25% of your starting position players are gone for the season.

Don’t know whether Wilson and the rest of the pen are wearing down a bit and are in need of a break, or its mostly frustration at the tired bats, but the BP has not been as golden as they were even a week ago. On the other hand the Freak, the Horse and the Undertaker have been nothing less than masterful. C’mon gang, get em some danged hits and runs already!

Funny, K and K were raving about the great June Nate had, here are some pesky facts, the middle of the order guys, in June:

    Nate 91 AB 8 2B 0 HR 10 RBI .268 BA .696 OPS
    Ross 108 AB 11 2B 2 HR 10 RBI .287 BA .848 OPS
    Huff 103 AB 4 2B 4 HR 18 RBI .291 BA .793 OPS

I didn’t count Pablo, not a full month.Nate’s had a good year, FOR HIM, but offensively he’s still a bottom tier corner outfielder. Yet the Cult thrives…

Henry has thought that “Hanchez” might be up sooner rather than later, which would spell the end for Vern and Vera’s boy. The only thing keeping Eli around might be the popularity of Vera’s Ambrosia Salad- yes, it’s that good..
Hector has made a nice jump to AAA- .345 BA .422 OBP .858 OPS. Stewart would remain the regular with Hector getting a couple starts a week..that’s all conjecture on my part but Hector is probably a better bet than the flotsam and jetsam that make up the vast majority of back up catchers…

  21. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 2, 2011 at 11:21 am

Hector does have the classic catcher’s build, from what they say: 5’11” @ 235 pounds. No problem squatting and not likely to be bowled over by many guys charging in from third unless they are somebody like Prince Fielder. Even so, if he positioned himself right, the rhino might take as much damage as the hippo. Water Buffalos might come out second best and so would their cousins.

Funniest thing I read today was about the man I dubbed the “Rowand of the White Sox” the other day . . . “I wish I had 25 Juan Pierres,” said Ozzie Guillen on Friday, in defense of an indefensible player who happened to have a big hit in a 1-for-4 performance. Just for the record, 25 Juan Pierres would have a combined WAR of -25.0.

    Too funny.

  30. Rough Trade's avatar Rough Trade said, on July 2, 2011 at 2:31 pm

  31. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 2, 2011 at 2:36 pm

Exactly, Beane wouldn’t ever trade someone who could help the Giants. Look who he traded him to, the one team who could actually beat us this year.
I talked up Pena last Winter but for 3 mil a year, not the 10 mil he got from the Cubs. And while he definitely is a warmer weather guy, I think ATT would frustrate him more than anything else. Plus, he’d hit .220. He trying to hit 40 this year to get him some “Dunn Money”. Anyway, I wouldn’t be bummed if we got him but I wouldn’t celebrate either…..

Nice bit of analysis yesterday by Krukow on Stewart’s swing. I was wondering why Stewart’s swing seemed to have so little lower body to it. That little pause he makes takes away the lower body from his swing. If they could actually help that guy’s swing…..well, we’ll take any improvement at catcher that we can get.
    —–
How about Hall’s 0-for-5 at DH yesterday? Yikes.

  33. zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 2, 2011 at 2:54 pm

One of the reasons why it’s felt like the Giants have been playing this season uphill so far is the schedule, of course. We know it’s going to even out eventually, but the Giants are having to wait a LONG time for that evening process. The Phillies have played NINE more homegames than the Giants at the moment. And the Rockies have five more homegames than the Giants at the moment.
Having said that, the Giants need to do well in the upcoming homestand, or they’ll be wasting a nice opportunity. They finally get some more games against the Padres; 4 games.

  35. willieD's avatar willieD said, on July 2, 2011 at 3:17 pm

Hall seems pretty useless, but Manny doesn’t seem like a 9th inning guy…last night he had the K with guys on, and then the dumb error on a play where you had to get one out. He doesn’t field anywhere consistently well enough to be a starter, imo.
Carlos pena is going to make a lot of outs in the middle of any LU he is in…he is fully capable of hitting .196, and you know the HR production is going down at ATT as opposed to what he is going to do playing in wrigley and warm weather parks in that division. plus he is downright annoying to watch hit, stepping in/out and calling time. Guys like that could get teammates hurt.

(latter is nasty shit but not as nasty as the Goddamns which were out in force today and hardly any air-support as dragonflies pretty much shot their wad a couple weeks back when there were hardly any mosquitoes for food). Also did some garden weeding and composting as well as picking a tiny portion of bumper strawberry crop. Homegrown ones are the best. I never buy corporate crap from Cali as they are quite tasteless and probably full of chemicals.

Grand Rapids, Minnesota, where i lived for awhile after returning to Minnesota from California has a 40 or so year tradition of a car-show and flea market which draws from a huge area. Biggest in Minnesota.

So its raining near Lake Huron?

It might be hard to see with us winning 6-0 but this game is classic “zito’s Law”. Ever seen caddyshack???.

    • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on July 2, 2011 at 5:29 pm

One of the greatest movies ever made. If the lighting strikes Zito after five innings, I think I’m OK with it.

  51. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 2, 2011 at 5:21 pm

Perfect time for a rainout — Zito on short rest. Give the bullpen a fucking break. If they don’t get this one in, Vogelsong goes on regular rest tomorrow.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 2, 2011 at 5:24 pm

Vogelsong was going on regular rest anyway. And how is losing a 6-0 lead good?

    • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on July 2, 2011 at 5:35 pm

I’m not sure I understand your point xoot. Top of the third, men on 1st and 2nd, 3 and 1 count to Crawfish, nobody out, leading 6 – 0, their starter is on the ropes and now we get rain. How is that good?
Sorry man, I’m not trying to be a dick but I’m thinking after 5 innings would have been the perfect time.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 2, 2011 at 5:48 pm

Yes, Vogelsong goes on regular rest tomorrow, as planned, but with a well rested BP if this game gets called. Not the worst thing. If Zito keeps pitching tonight, who the fuck knows what will happen? Could work out just fine, given the big lead, etc. Could turn into a BP burner. My faith in ABZ is so strong, I call it 50/50 at this point, despite th big lead.

  55. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 2, 2011 at 6:15 pm

New App for Giants baseball = Torture. Giants pitching tortures opposing hitters. Giants hitting tortures their own pitchers, management and 99% of the fan-base. Get a six-zip lead with a major threat to score more and a rainout looms.

  56. zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 2, 2011 at 6:33 pm

A weather website I checked out said the rain should end about 8:00 Pacific Time.
And then it’ll take them a while to get the field ready after that, of course. This game should get resumed eventually.

Schulman tweets that the tarp is being removed. Why can’t we see that? I’ll be that’s a lot funnier than rolling it out.

Late to comment: I was late in my youth to see “The Wizard of Oz.” Have not seen it in years, but, yeah, it’s classic. I’m afraid to ask how old Judy Garland was, for fear I might look pervy. Incidentally, nearby Chittenango, NY, celebrates Oz author L. Frank Baum, local guy (lived in Cuse too) with a parade and yellow bricks. Of course, tougher folks can go to see Carmen Basilio and billy Backus at the nearby Boxing Hall of Fame, in Canastota — up the road from Turning Stone Casino, where I just may’ve gotten lucky earlier this week.

Bozo, A., I wouldn’t want the Taxman to lay claim to my alleged, albeit meager, so-called winnings, and B. I’m not sure what “get lucky” even means anymore. Can I “get lucky” by myself unassisted?

  59. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 2, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Zito’s stretching in the outflied, warming up in the pen, ready to take the mound again, according to Henry. Restart at 7.15. Be careful what you wish for, you may get it. (Bochy will have the pen going the moment Zito lets two batters reach base in an inning. Book it.)

OK rain delay question. How does everyone feel about Selig as the Comish? Personally I don’t like the guy, but I was wondering if any body else had any thoughts on the guy.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 2, 2011 at 7:02 pm

      What’s he the Comish of?

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on July 2, 2011 at 7:13 pm

I’m generally very negative about Selig, but on the positive side there are a few things. There is an MLB team in Milwaukee because of Selig, and I think that’s a good thing for baseball. And he helped Hank Aaron transition into a career after baseball, by helping him get started in the car-dealer business, which Aaron became very successful in. Aaron was hurting for money after his baseball career. He had lost his baseball money to a crooked accountant firm. How crooked was it? It didn’t exist! Aaron had been completely ripped off.
