A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Why is this Team Hitting So Poorly?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 6, 2011

With nearly 3000 team at bats in the books, it’s pretty hard to argue that we have some “slow starters” on the team right now. This is who they are this year. A team that is hitting .242  collectively, with a .671 OPS. We are missing a few pieces from last year (Uribe, Posey and Sanchez), but is this a result of the subtraction of those guys or something else?

I had an “ah ha” moment during the game last night when the camera panned to Burrell and Ross chewing seeds on the bench. I know they are hurt but they looked quite content–like they could do that the rest of the year. And when you think about it, they already have something that they didn’t have last year—a World Series ring. That was a magical run they went on last year. It was partially fueled by something most of them didn’t have–a ring.

Now, I’m not saying any of them are dogging it or mailing in their at bats. But they simply can’t be fueled by the same fire they had last year. I think it would be normal to expect a decline in motivation this year. Or maybe I’m talking about passion. I don’t know.

What I do know is that we are past half way through the season and no one (except Pablo) is stepping up. I have a new appreciation for Miggy, mostly because I feel like he’s the only one busting his ass on every play. He’s also the only one without a ring. Obviously, his stats aren’t reflective of the effort he’s putting in on the field. But he’s driven by the same desire that the rest of the guys were driven by last year. If he could somehow share that with the rest of the guys we might be on to something. But he can’t, they already used it last year…….

The bottom line is that we didn’t have any margin for error last year. It took every single guy performing at their peak in critical moments to make 2010 happen. Any drop off, and we lose that edge. And that’s what I think is lacking this season. Short of a trade or 4, I don’t see this offense doing enough to get back to the playoffs this year…….

I said several weeks ago this offense could not get the squad to the playoffs. Sabean obviously will have to make at least one significant move to bolster this pansyass offense. He won’t give up much, so he won’t get much. If Belt so much as looks warm back in Fresno, his bat should be brought up. I’m visiting the Gettysburg battlefield today. Not to equate the two, but the Giants last year had the cojones and conviction to mount a Pickett’s charge, but actually succeeded in taking the high ground despite withering fire. This year, the offense is stuck in the woods, constantly re-grouping while the enemy is consolidating strength on top of the divisional ridge…

Have you all debated the merits of trying to bring Juan Uribe back? Two more years on a contract at what roughly $7 mill per year. I think that is more than he ever should have received, but makes sense for the Dodgers to get rid of that contract. We swap them Tejada (roughly equal slaries for the remainder of this year) and then on the hook for two more Uribe years…would be good karma and avoids the potential injuried to be Jose Reyes…

  3. Rough Trade's avatar Rough Trade said, on July 6, 2011 at 7:12 am

I don’t see any complacency or less competitive fire out there. They still want to show everyone it wasn’t a fluke. I never questioned Tejada’s effort, just the decline in his physical skills. In fact, I’ve always figured he was trying *too* hard the more frustrated he became. To me, he’s not much different than what the Gamer and Zito have gone through. Like most pro athletes, they have enormous pride in what they do and wanted to live up to or even exceed expectations. Failure eats away at each of them. We’re seeing it now in part with Torres.

Hard to quantify, but teams, especially the Padres, do seem more emotionally jacked up facing the “World Champion G’s”. .

The good news is that the Giants are doing MUCH BETTER than they were at this time last year. Look it up, it’s true. I forgot what their record was last year compared to this year, but I pointed this out last week. However, Flav is correct in pointing out that the passion or drive to succeed like last year may be wanting . . . or worse. As he pointed out, they already have the “brass ring,” so what is the EXTRA incentive, besides their natural drive to compete? Personally, I think they need someone on the team (preferably a position player who plays every day) to call them out. Unfortunately, we do not have a Jeter* or Tulowitski who has the status and ability to light a fire under their team without it getting out to the media in a negative way (*Jeter isn’t even able to do this anymore because he can’t back it up with his play). If Huff could start hitting consistently, he might be that candidate to do so.

That being said, there is plenty of time for Sabean to make a move(s). Don’t expect the move(s) to be necessarily directed at making the playoffs, but rather adding players that will make some noise during the playoffs. Remember, we still have plenty of baseball left and the Giants are in the “driver’s seat” despite the “woe is me” attitude of certain Flappers and fans.

I doubt the offense was this bad at the same time last year. I can’t look it up right now but I will believe it if I see it

  7. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 6, 2011 at 7:39 am

I didn’t say their “offense.” I indicated “record.”

  8. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 6, 2011 at 7:59 am

The “woe is me” crowd would point out that our *record* is inflated. Fortunate if you will to be 9 games over .500. Pythagoras says is *should* be 44-43 given our measly +7 run diff. for the year. This team (offense) needs help. OUTSIDE help. Our lone saving grace? It may only take 84-86 wins to capture this godforsaken division. But I’ve already counted that as a given. I’m thinking big picture. And we ain’t winning shit in the postseason until we get some OUTSIDE help.

  9. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 6, 2011 at 8:02 am

Is this team broken? That seems to be the question. Posey is gone for the season. Sanchez probably so. Huff is puffing. Magic Dragon rarely emerges. Now Torres has caught the virus. Pablo was out for a bunch of while. Others getting injured fairly frequently. So the offense is a mess.

Lincecum and Cain both going down to the Padres. Usually one would pick up the other, but may be the edge is not as keen as it could be. Constantly having to pitch too fine does take a toll. You can see it in the bullpen. The bulwark has started to crumble.

Five games left in the homestand. Two down. Giants will need to go with who they got till the Break. There was hope that against SD and NY, they would go 5-2. Now the fear is that may be reversed. What to do? Is there anyone in the Minors who can inject some energy? Would a trade add more than subtract?

We will find out a lot about this team over the next five games.

  10. willieD's avatar willieD said, on July 6, 2011 at 8:33 am

Cain admits he didn’t make his pitch. I don’t buy the “constantly having to pitch too fine” argument. These are guys are pros, facing pros every AB. They know one bad pitch can get taken out of the yard, anytime anywhere. That’s baseball, played at the highest level of competence.
I didn’t care for the bunt either in the 9th. you are down 2 runs, with 3 outs left; they already had 2 hits off bell to lead off the inning. He’d left pitches up to tejada and burrell and gotten whacked. In other words, he hadn’t got anyone out yet, so why give him one?
Qualls is a punk, and torres had something to say about him afterward. But again, give the f-ing Padres credit for walking in here and beating cain and lincecum, no small accomplishment. They are closer to 3rd place and the rockies than they are to the last place dodgers.

    • stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 6, 2011 at 9:12 am

Pitching too fine when its always on the line? How many laughers have Cain and Lincecum benefited from this year? How many of our starters have been able to ride a three or four run bulge from the early innings? What i’m talking about here is the all important edge a starting pitcher must maintain. Sure, a tight game on a fairly frequent basis can keep a guy sharp ~ but consistently and constantly? Sooner or later psychological abrasion sets in. A ‘what the hell’ attitude starts creeping in. Matters start getting a bit rough around the edges. By the infinitesimal margin of one pitch thrown in a suspended state of distraction, the game is lost.

      Happened last night.

      • willieD's avatar willieD said, on July 6, 2011 at 9:27 am

they are more professional than that, stix. vogs had the early lead vs. the cubs, twice, and proceeded to give it back right away (not all of an 8 run lead, sure). They know what’s going on and how to deal with it.
and the game was not “lost” at that point…giants got guys on and couldn’t get them in. torres attempt was not a good decision either.

  11. Kevin's avatar Kevin said, on July 6, 2011 at 8:49 am

So with all the talk about injuries and lack of offense and Pitching. Does anyone here want to see a six man rotation for the rest of the year. Or do they trade for a bat. I prefer that the Giants continue to bring up players. FA is no longer the cash cow it once was, thanks to the crack down on steroid use. Teams are going to have to build there teams from their own farm system. Sure there is a possibility that there is a player out there. But what are you going to have to give up to get that player. And BF is right, when you have a balance of Vets and young quality players who do not have a ring the hunger is just there. So with that said who going to step up and lead the way. Tejada shows he wants it but I just don’t see him lasting as a starter. Panda sat on the bench last year so that is his motivation, he has a ring but he didn’t play.

They probably will make some moves but more with an eye to the postseason. They can make the playoffs as is. Actually, even the local cynics agree, no one thinks there’s a team to challenge them. I went through this shit with you yokels several times last year. You want to make it all about the offense and ignore the rest of the division and where the team stands- EIGHT games better off and ahead, not chasing three teams.

    Cliff Pennington, Oakland Athletics
    Emilio Bonifacio, Florida Marlins
    Clint Barmes, Houston Astros
    Yunel Escobar, Toronto Blue Jays
    Marco Scutaro, Boston Red sox
    J.J. Hardy, Balitmore Orioles

Kevin: That writer simply has not been keeping up with events. Shortstop currently is one of the least of our problems. Who drove in that first run last night? Crawford is no Vizquel, but he is a quality defensive SS. He came up hitting, got ‘solved’ by the pitchers for awhile, but now has stepped it up again. Quick learner. The kid has a good batting eye and draws walks. His OBP is not that far south of team average ~ and climbing. He has shown clutch more than once already. Sure, throw in a good pitching prospect along with Brandon and every one of those teams would jump at the chance to offload one of their vets for a guy who in two years time may be a significant upgrade on any of them, PLUS gaining a good pitcher just for shits and giggles.

The likely SS of the future is still Adrianza, BTW, not Crawford. The process of adjustment to and by Crawford has barely begun. Get a clue..
And Snarkkles is suggesting that bringing Belt up would be that “significant move”? Fontenot, Belt, probably Hector Sanchez at some point, maybe Pequero-these are STANDARD moves, pal.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 6, 2011 at 9:44 am

Standard moves, yes. But not OUTSIDE moves. Nothing inside is going to help. Think outside. Think Bob Uecker as Harry Doyle in “Major League.” “JUST a bit outside.”

  16. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 6, 2011 at 9:49 am

Twin: We know that Crawford can hit a lick. Adjustments and re-adjustments will be made. That’s baseball. Scouting reports may indicate that Adrianza has great defensive skills. Jury is still out on whether or not he can hit and i’ve no clue as to whether he could hit in the clutch~ or get on base with some frequency. Should the Giants develop a powerhouse attack they could readily afford an Adrianza at SS in a couple years or so. In the meantime i expect Crawford to continue developing into an acceptable ML hitter. He already is better than average defensively, even with the odd lapse.

    • stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 6, 2011 at 10:02 am

Based on exactly what? Statistically to date, Crawford has been hitting a lick ~ maybe not a whole bunch more, but he has shown clutch more than once, gets on base about as often as most of his teammates and happens to be a shortstop, where hitting more than a lick is usually not an overwhelming issue. Your ex-cathedra pronouncements are well suited to an Archbishop, but without backup, are nothing more than that. So explain yourself or stfu.

  19. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 6, 2011 at 9:57 am

Just looked over the Fresno website and checked the individual stats. Though there are six position players who are hitting AAA pitching well enough to get a call by September, the pitching stats look like a chamber of horrors. Not one single starter worth a call. Most of the relievers with ERA’s currently challenging the space program. ONE exception in the bullpen. Dan Otero. Called up a few weeks back from Richmond where he sported a 1.42 ERA, he has been dominant in the PCL with a 0.90 ERA to date. Righty. 26. Less than one hit per inning. More than one K/IP. Several TIMES more strikeouts than walks. Statistically at least, Otero is a prospect.

Should a trade be in the works, one reliever besides Mota might be sacrificed, as the signs indicate, to me anyway, that Otero would be an asset to the Giants.

  20. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on July 6, 2011 at 10:07 am

We’re either getting Philly or the Braves in the NLDS. And if the Braves p/u Michael Bourn (good chance they do) instead of us, say good night Gracie.

    • stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 6, 2011 at 10:30 am

Michael Bourn, last i checked was hitting something like .262, but with a pile of SB’s. Should Torres stage a nice comeback, Bourn would be a bit costly for what would then be a supplementary rather than a complementary role. Tablesetter would be a bit of a luxury when compared with a guy who can consistently drive in runners. Add somebody like that to Pablo without taking away too much from other facets of the team and SF is virtually guaranteed the Division and figures better than three and out in the playoffs.

  21. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 6, 2011 at 10:10 am

You are total sucker for these AAA stats. HSanchez and Belt are the only “top” prospects. Iffy are Neal and Gillaspie. Thart’s it. Otero? Maybe in a Mota role. And then Runzler.
The guy that could make a pitcher trade possible is Surkamp in Richmond.

    • stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 6, 2011 at 10:26 am

Apples and oranges between Otero and Surkamp. Surkamp appears to be a damned good starter. Otero a quality reliever. Otero in a Mota role? Bad read. He’s not slop and neither is he a long-man. He’d replace one of the two “R’s”. Surkamp replaces Sanchez. A reliever, a starter and a second-line position prospect could bring a pretty serious position player.

Agreed that Hiram and Brandon are the only ‘top’ prospects. I was talking September, so not only would Neal and Gillaspie qualify then, but so would Edgar Gonzalez with plenty of M.L experience along with Brett Pill, who, top prospect or not, has acquitted himself nicely at Fresno and deserves the reward of nothing less than a nice cuppa coffee.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 6, 2011 at 10:35 am

I never compared Otero and Surkamp. There’s nothing to suggest Otero wouldever be as good as the “two R’s”. If he had a role end of year it would be first or second outof the pen, like Mota. You are presuming a trade, never a good idea, Minniie.
I’ve already addressed Gonzales. Pill? Whatever. Better bet for a significant pop or two is Eldred.

    • stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 6, 2011 at 10:39 am

Signore Archbishop: A .215 hitting shortstop is one thing, even if his OBP is around .300. One expects a whole lot more offense from outfielders and first basemen than from shortstops. A good player in those spots hits around .280 and over a season drives in 80+ with 20 or more Dingers. I like Torres, but when did he get thrown under a bus? Looks like his current problems are primarily internal. And don’t lump me with the voices of Doom, even if the current situation requires an A+ effort from the Undertaker tonight to stop the bleeding. Panda 3B
    Huff 1B
    Ross RF
    Rowand LF

We’ll see as the prosecution waits for their pitch to take Clemens deep! If Rick Porcello was ‘effectively’ wild last week, former Giants prospect Francisco Liriano was disastrously wild today: 4 1/3 innings, 5 earned runs allowed, 6 hits, 4 walks, a wild pitch, and he hit Damon twice and Rodriguez once.

  37. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 6, 2011 at 4:43 pm

Speaking of hitting, there may be some rib ticklers between these teams tonight.

Qualls spike at least should draw some ire after these guys see the replay. I didn’t see the punch that purportedly happened, but if so, more fuel for the fire.

  38. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 6, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Andres’ biggest mistake is that it was Qualls on the hill. If it’s Adams, go for it. But Qualls and his “heavy sinker” suck.

Chad QUalls is FOS. I’ve sat right on the rail at the visitors bullpen twice before. I’ve never seen any of the things he claimed. Spitting on him? Maybe in Philly. In SF there’s some mild razzing. They do that *whoop–woo* thing when the pitcher throws–that’s more annoying that anything else.

Ha! Glad to see others picking up on the absolute reverence that Krukow has for the sinker. The pitch is so awesome, the sinkerballer can get lots of doubleplays! Of course, it’s not explained why the sinkerballer is allowing so many baserunners on firstbase in the firstplace.

The Giants average 0.82 runs in Bumgarners 9 losses? Yeah, that’ll definitely get you some losses. Tonight’s lineup is not promising in that regard, but you never know.

  47. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 6, 2011 at 7:16 pm

Qualls did a great job blocking the plate with his bent leg, and the toss to him was excellent. The Padres were playing hard. But I also say the slap Qualls gave Torres as he slid in, and the spiked ball and shout pissed me off. I suspect Torres and the Giants felt even angrier. I would pay it back.

agreed. I can’t even go outside to light the bbq before I find out we are down 2-0. But the SP can’t be expected to pitch lights out every game. At some point the offense has to put up runs or this season is going to end for us on the last day of the reg season. I agree with Twin, there is very little competition in the NL West. Really, it’s just going to be us and Colorado. But if we are scoring 3 runs a game Colorado will pass us in Aug after they add a SP…..

When Dirrrty comes back, and IF he’s not traded, I propose Sanchez (where his home numbers across the board are better than his road) starts the home games for the 4th spot in the rotation and Bumgarner takes the spot away from home.
