Another Extra Inning Win
What can you say about last night’s win? After Tejada and Torres failed miserably with the bases loaded and nobody out, our ol’ fallback (the other team making a mistake) came to the rescue yet again. Thank God for Gregerson, he actually should have been player of the game……
Timmy going tonight. I don’t know much at all about Moseley. His 2-8 record is offset by a 3.21 ERA so apparently he’s got a little “Bumgarner” luck in him….
Short and sweet today, see you guys……..
Was at the Grizzlies-River Cats game last night. Belt walked his first time up and Hit a homer the next. Fielding is not the Grizzlies strong suit, or it was just the game I was at. the pitcher Loux made two errors, 1, a weak grounder to first, he tried the old scoop and toss, hit the runner in the leg, runner was safe. Second error hard hit ball to Belt, Loux covering 1st dropped the ball. At that point I had to yell out that he would never be in a Giants uni if he can’t field his position.
Er, not to worry. Loux is strictly AAA roster filler.
oh the Grizzlies won 3-2 thanks to Belts homer.
You know Kevin, I thinks it’s very cool you went to a Grizzlies game. I’ve never been to a minor league game. In fact, until I started coming to this blog, the minor leagues had just been a vague acknowledgement in my mind. But hanging out with this bunch of baseball head cases here, I’ve come to realize the fun and importance of all the prospects and potentials.
I love the Flap. And yes…I am, for the time being, sober
Winning that first game of a set of four series. Yes. Take that first one and chances are excellent that even on the road you’ll do no worse than a split. If its possible to be so, SD is one team which is even more offensively challenged than SF. Three of four would be nicely advantaging that situation and a proper turnabout for the Dagos taking two of 3 by the Bay last go-round.
Was Huff’s heroics last night a harbinger of the return of Huff the Magic Dragon? Bit early to tell yet, but it sure was critical last night. With Bochy finally dropping him outta the cleanup spot, perhaps the pressure to perform has eased up a bit on Aubrey. He also has been known to have strong second halves after dogging it before the break. Dogging may be not quite the right word, but youse guys know what i mean ~ like a tired old hound, so to speak.
Gotta love that bullpen. Ramirez and Casilla each throwing a pair of spotless innings, plus Romo’s clean three up, three down gave the Giants enough breathing space to eke out that win in the 12th. Somehow or another, more often than not, they find a way to get it done. Guess that’s the story of this team through game 93.
Thanx for the Fresno update, Kevin. Belt runs may be every bit as critical to this team in the homestretch as the possibility of Beltran’s. Kid looks ready to return, particularly if he keeps up the heroics for a few more games. If Brandon can contribute, the Giants may have found a nice chunk of their offense right where they expected it back in April. Problem now looks like finding playing time. With Ross and Rowand so-so, the logical hole would be LF, as Huff is not so good there, even while Belt is the better first baseman.
Huff says he’s a 2nd half guy.
Can’t really draw any conclusions, but here are the numbers.
2010…295/17 1st half, 284/9 2nd.
2009 .259/11, .214/4.
2008 .284/18, .332/14.
2007 .258/6, .309/9
Talk about out of the blue last night. Huff was right back to his 3 hoppers to 2nd base in yesterday’s game, and demn near non-existent presence in the line up when he dug that down and in pitch and planted it in the RF seats. When he hit it, I had no idea that he even elevated the ball.
And Ross jacked one foul.
The deal is, watching these Padres games is an excersize in what? Futility? Tedium? Mini-tiny-weenie ball? Torture? 3 more of these games? Gaaaaaaaaaah! Might as well turn them on inthe 8th inning to see what’s happening. 0-0 or 1-1 is the usual deal.
Criminy, is ONE blowout too much to ask for?
Baggs thinks Hector Sanchez will be promoted today. Still trying to confirm…
Talk about Belt, found it interesting looking at another 1b who finally broke out at age 24. He’s now tearing it up in Boston. Didn’t realize he had been traded twice before.
He had a taste at age 22 (44 ab’s) and hit .236., and 150 abs at 23 and hit just .227/6/17rbi. Texas then traded him to SD. Next yr he went .304/24/82
Hector went 0-4. two strike outs, ground out and a fly out. I want to say he threw out two runners, can’t find it in the box scores though.
Hector up and The Bat hits the DL with some phony-baloney injury (bone spur).
3 catchers? That’s almost as bad as 13 pitchers. Asinine.
Dennis stay in the stable. Breath the wonder air. Think positive thoughts.
I’d have to think that other moves are coming, Doomin’.Settle down.
I would hope so. I believe they still need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Hector.
My Aunt Tilly cleared a spot on the 40-man roster for Hector once. Once!
Doesn’t make sense to bring Hector up to “showcase” him. He’s constantly showcased in the minors. Other organizations already know what he’s got. He’s coming up to see if he can hit now, since the other catchers can’t. Even if he hits .250 with a little pop, that’d be a plus. Zits said he’s ready, so give him a shot…
Who said they were showcasing him? The question is why fior Burrell? Dennis is right for a change.
Baggarly postulated that in his blog this morning….
Postulated? WTF?
Went to bed in the 7th and woke up — twice in a week or so — to a bountiful steaming cup of fresh-brewed Victory. Losing 1-0 in the 7th, I figured something, SOMETHING, might happen.
Which win was bigger: this one? or the last one w/ Nate’s 2 HRs?
Burrell’s on the DL to make room for Beltran . . .
As Clemenza once said: “You won’t see him no more.”
That’s what Paulie gets for being a stronz’.
He sleeps with the fishes . . .
Burrell couldn’t have gotten injured while legging out hits. Maybe he got hurt while engaged in a threesome over the break…
Snarkk using his imagination?
Got a feeling that he turns down 3somes. Probably a 4some or moresome with him.
Deadspin has a kooky list of all time bad players, good for a laugh or two, with some decent write ups.
Yes, there are plenty of Giants.
Even Kuip makes an appearance.
My favs: Billy Beane, Kurt Bevaqua, Tommy Lasorda, Herb Washington, JR Phillips, Curt Blefary, Jose Lima…
http://tinyurl.com/67wkeo2
How can Marvin Benard not be on that list??? that is just wrong.
Got to love this Uecker quote:
“People don’t know this but I helped the Cardinals win the pennant. I came down with hepatitis. The trainer injected me with it.”
Tony Suck and Razor Shines.
Too funny . . .
In today’s NY Post:
The Giants’ Brian Wilson is another closer to carry a “lights-out” rep based on ridiculous save standards that award ineffective pitching. Though second in the majors with 26 saves, Wilson has allowed 39 hits and 22 walks in 43 innings. As firemen go, he’s highly flammable.
The only thing that matters in a closer really is how many blown saves he has. Wilson passes with flying colors, despite the frequent high wire act. The opinion of the NY Post is worse than meaningless…
Those final three outs just aren’t the same as other innings. Teams die hard. The batters in the ninth inning, trying to make a comeback in a close game, are just more intense and more focused. There’s more pressure for everyone involved. Being a closer is like playing cornerback in the NFL. You have to have a short memory.
You ain’t kidding, snarkk. This NY Post opinion is a travesty. It’s a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham.
The NY Post is owned and run by Rupert Murdoch and his cockroach minions.
Nothing more need be said as to the value of anything printed under its banner…
Snarkk is down on newspapers!
Snarkk is correct- the other numbers may be an indication that he’s gonna blow SOMEDAY- but save percentage is the only meaningful stat.
Sometimes i just wonder if Wilson isn’t toying with them on occasion. Other possibility for the Drama Queen .38 Special is that he can’t go full focus until things are tight and tense.
DJ, you forget the antics of Shooter? He wasn’t a hell of a lot different than Wilson. Nen wasn’t quite so psycho, but what do you do? If you can’t close the door, you aren’t effective, and you lose your closer job. If you can, you get to keep the job. Walks, hits, even WHIP indicate control problems, but if he can keep getting outs in the end, he’s doing the job he supposed to do.
If he walks 80 more guys, but blows a couple along the way, oh well. You take the good with the bad. If he flames out, well, then you deal with that as it goes. The steroid era affected pitchers (and closers) as well. I don’t think we’ll see a guy like Gagme anymore. A guy who doesn’t blow a save all year. There are 2 guys in the top 30 without a blown save. Valverde and Hanrahan. Yeah, his WHIP is high, but as long as he shuts the door, he’s cool. If not, we get Romo going forward. Romo even said when he came in for a save the other day that it was scary as hell.
Same soup as last night except literally NO Whitey…
CF Torres
2B Fontenot
3B Sandoval
RF Schierholtz
1B Huff
LF Ross
SS Crawford
C Stewart
P Lincecum
No soup for Whitey!!!
Wilson tries to put pitches on the paint more than you’d like a closer trying to do. He ends up with a lot of 3-2 counts. It works out overall, though.
Had a dream last night the Giants sent Hector Sanchez, Darren Ford, and Erik Surkamp to Houston for Michael Bourn and Jeff Keppinger….Then followed that up with Charlie Culberson and Heath Hembree to Mets for Carlos Beltran and Ronny Paulino…I awoke in a mad sweat, concerned that the farm had been depleted…I then looked at this lineup and happily fell back to sleep
Bourn CF
Torres/Ross LF
Sandoval 3b
Beltran RF
Huff 1b
Paulino C
Keppinger 2b
Crawford ss
The Angels, Friars and Cardinals are the only three other teams currently carrying three catchers.
I guess that makes the Giants Shemp — the fourth Stooge.
Won’t be for long. If Hector looks like he can hit his weight and shows any defensive skills, Stewart is gone…
Snarkk gets snarky.
Lets imbibe!
Greetings Flappers! I’m still recovering from yesterday—spent the day at the beach with the kids, then went to the game with the fellas, and then took the kids to the midnight Harry Potter showing followed by hitting the 24 hour taco shop. (I reminded the kids not to stare at any patrons—-rough crowd in SD taco shops at 3 am)
Petco was overrun with Giants fans, cheering louder, wearing more colors, and talking much more crap. It got a little ugly in the Premier Club with some Giants fans nearly starting a couple of fights and one knucklehead hanging a BA on the window after we took the lead. I had great seats behind the plate, just above the netting. Eli hit a foul ball straight back that wizzed about 2 feet past my left ear. Dude behind me in a panda hat had his glove and caught that sucker.
Not surprised by the Burrell DL thing. If he is the odd man out, I’m sure he’ll get the Aurilia treatment for the rest of the season and will never be outright released–even if he makes only one mil and can’t play anymore.
Saw the box score this morning, from last night’s game. huff homer and that score; guessed we’d run over the Pads. Then I noticed it was a 12 inning affair and read the game story. Looks like I missed a great game. Used to love day games, well, because they were day games. Now I love them because I can watch ’em before bed time. 🙂
Felt like going to bed and now I am excited anticipating the game. So fantastic to see the giant fans @ petco.
Go Gigantes!
Stewart’s been gone ever since the two throwing errors…the throwing was all he had going for him. Well, he was a fine talker..
Off with his head!
When was the last time a team went anywhere with a rookie catcher?
We want vets!
last two years Wilson Whip was 1.18 and 1.20. This year 1.42.
K’s 93 in 74 innings last year. On pace for 75 in 77.
Walks last 3 years 26,27,28. This year 23 already.
Still good, but no longer elite, at least not so far.
Any chance Wilson’s outside activities are a distraction?
—
I had a little hunch Bell might be vulnerable last night when they put up his stats. His K’s per IP is way down…
Keep in mind- they’re not looking for middle of the order numbers from Hector- but his .825 minor league OPS is better than Eli or Chris ever had in 19 minor league seasons between them.Remember Eliezer his first year? I’d take that in a millisecond..
Twin is ready for new faces!
MLB trade rumors: The Royals are looking for “near ready” starting pitching for Jeff Francoeur and Melky Cabrera. I’d love to get Melky…
(^_^)
Got Melk?
who’s your Korean friend?
They can keep Francoeur, we’ve got plenty of guys already that swing at everything….
The best place to watch the Giants?
Petco
who’d a thunk?
Pretty much everyone has bailed on Torres. I think he’ll have a big second half, given the chance.
These wild first innings from Lincecum are getting old.
Apropos of nothing, I watched the movie Something Wild with my 14 year old kid the other night. I thought it was instructive. What do you guys think? I may need a reference.
Same: Jon Miller, introducing the Padres, used the Blazing Saddles inflection when he said, “Headley.” But And then, eager to repeat the inside joke, he used the same inflection as Headley’s spot came up to bat. But it wasn’t Headley. Apparently Headley’s hurt. Instantly, Miller dropped the BSaddles schtick.
And the fucking first inning drags on.
Fucking Whiteside dropped the final foultip pitch of the inning. Lincecum had to throw two more pitches. Whiteside owes the team 1 rbis tonight.
Uh, counselor, Stewart is catching this evening.
Well, Whitey gave him the idea..
Fucking disguised motherfucker dropped the fucking ball? That makes it twice as bad. I hate that fucking Whiteside now.
Great mistake hitter that Clown…
I like Fontenot. He almost made the same play in the first. It’s almost as if he stretched out better because of the earlier play. Great DP. I’m sure wild ass Lincecum agrees.
Nice play by Font, but worse base running by Maybin. Ball was hit in front of him and he neglected to freeze.
That’s Baseball 101. I think a little greed might have got the best of him.
he neglected to freeze? If he’d “frozen” he would’ve been thrown out by 20 feet instead of 90. He was sure the drive was through.
You HAVE to make sure that ball gets through first and foremost. Maybin was headin’ to second before Font made the diving catch. If he would have “froze,” very good chance he gets back to first avoiding the DP.
bullshit. he was dead meat, frozen or not.
Fontenot is a good player- and from the right side he’s a pretty fair hitter. He won’t hurt them.
” He won’t hurt them.” That’s a ringing endorsement if I ever heard one. I prefer my players like when the ball rolls down the street to the little kid and you yell, “a little help!”
Tim’s first ML homer tonight in the jury box?
I hate to rag on the guy who saved our butts last night w/ a game-tying 9th inning HR, but just how many 4-3 putouts has Huff grounded into this year? Maybe in honor of Huff Daddy, I play the 4-3 exacta tomorrow just for shits and giggles…
Any chance Kemp wins the MVP playing for the shitty Bums? He’s the best player this year and it’s not even close…
The best player on the worst team gets a lot of fat pitches. And what would he be valuable for? Keeping them from losing 140?
If the game’s on the line in the 9th, you think they’ll call for Bell? Don’t be surprised if they don’t. His failure to blow away Huff last night with high FBs led to the weak breaking ball and the tying homer. He was hungover from the AS parties. Now his arm is tired, too.
Bell’s gonna be wearing a Philly uni in two weeks. He’ll sober up when he goes from 13 GB to a 4 game lead in a moments notice.
Why wouldn’t they? They’re gonna all of a sudden give up on a guy who gave up a homer for the first time since April of last year?
He needs a break, I think. He’ll be back tomorrow.
Well that sucked. Hold em here Timmy.
That may have been the most F’d up run scored against this season…
A walk to a .204 hitter and then two wild pitches to set up a gimme run. That was ugly.
Not to mention they picked him off and the ump blew the out call…
I sure hope Stew enjoyed that cup of coffee here, because it’s back to riding the bus for him.
I don’t know a thing about ADD or ADHD, etc. But Andres sure can focus when it counts.
Nice grab by Torres to end that strenuous inning compliments of the reigning two-time Cy Young Award winner.
He’ll be lucky to finish the 6th…
Just a heckuva play, possibly a game-saver.
Hit with RISP for Torres. Yess, what a concept. I like it…
Hey snarkk, how was Gettysburg? We were there this time last year and crammed in a lot of history, including a ghost tour, in two days. Hot as Hades, too.
We did it in one day. Visitor Center early. Then did the auto tour taking a few hours. I had reserved a personal auto guide about a week earlier for $55 for two hours, but we had to bail due to scheduling, and they don’t allow you to cancel and get money back. So, I was out $55 for nada. Whatever. We stopped and got out at Little Round Top about 3 pm, I about keeled over it was so freekin hot and humid. I tried to imagine sitting up there getting shot at about the same time in 1863, and shooting down at Rebs climbing up the hill and over in the Devil’s Den, fighting in woolen uniforms in that heat. Also went over to the 20th Maine monument in the woods down from Little Round Top where Chamberlain beat back the Rebs coming up in there. Amazing place. Also, I walked out to the stone fence on Cemetery Ridge to imagine 12,000 Rebs coming at me in Pickett’s Charge. I gotta say, it gave me chills. All those guys, on both sides, were either nutz, dedicated to the cause, and/or had giant brass balls. Could I have done it? I dunno. I guess you had to be there to know. Also, went over to the cemetery where Lincoln gave the Address. That’s some history right there. Best speech ever given, anywhere, anytime, and took all of two minutes…
Yeah, great stuff, sounds pretty similar to our trip. My one regret was not checking out that restaurant named after Gettysburg’s own Eddie Plank.
I would like to have stayed an extra night and explored more of the Gettysburg town, but we were pressed for time. We went over into Amish country and stayed on a Mennonite farm overnight. The Snarkettes got to milk cows and feed calves. They enjoyed it. Lots of Amish in buggies driving around, and Mrs. Snark went nutz buying Amish stuff for Xmas gifts. The Amish may live simply, but they’re damn good on making the bucks off the tourists, for sure. I kept my eye out for Kelly McGillis, but never found her…
“Don’t know much about history . . . “
Good call. Great scene in the hay loft of the barn.
Love that movie. She is so hot in that Amish get up…
B-U-T-FULL! Timmy with the great bunt, and Torres with the more than productive AB. Solid.
Multi hit innings. Clutch hits. WTF is goin on here?…
Nice double steal. The Padres seem a bit rattled.
Font is just sort of a *dude* but he does a lot of things that doesn’t make you tear your hair out. He takes pitches, he understands situations, he doesn’t try to do more than he can do. On this team, that’s golden…….
Makes absolutely NO Whitey sense that the Padres would just basically “give up” a run in that situation. That’s either got to be a fake throw to second, or the P cuts it off. Worst case scenario is 2nd and 3rd and then they walk Pablo to set up the force.
I think they just brain farted. They do that a lot. For a team managed by a guy who’s supposed to have that shit under control, that’s surprising. And I do think Black is a good manager, I wouldn’t mind having him manage SF one day………
does timmy get a gift win tonight? Make it through one more inning and then hand it over to our stud bullpen. He was shit tonight…….
Not shit. But not ace-lke; not even real good, that’s for sure. Although, as Jon Miller just pointed out, the Padres have only two hits off of Tim. Still, he made Stewart start to fantasize tonight about life after baseball — maybe look into that career in veterinary medicine. Anything but THIS . . . .
yes, *shit* was uncalled for. But when he comes in with 100+ after 5 (or whatever it is) it feels like shit if you’re a Cy Young……..
Yes. He feels like shit. He’s definitely not at his best and it’s wearing on him. He keeps battling, however, and his speed’s ok.
I’m telling ya, 4-3 exacta tomorrow in honor of the Huff Daddy.
I meant from the left side on Fontenot.
,
Pawlie will verify this, I said that the Pirates would be good this year, and here they sit in first place. It’s no accident either, they have a good team. If they nab a starting pitcher before the deadline they could just win that division…….
Pirates were my sleeper team during the draft; seems the team is looking up after the last few years.
I’l say one thing for Stewart/Whitey. That sonofabitch has that “you’re outta here” called-third-strike third-out side-sprint toward the dugout down pat. Lincecum throws strike three and before the ump’s right arm moves, Stewart/Whitey is moving laterally, triumphantly, outta there. The CF camera catches that step perfectly.
Hey, Flav. Did ya hear about GGF? Sounds like it’s gonna go by the wayside al a Bay Meadows. The Stronach Group which now controls everything plans to put a Lawrence Lab “green” extension on the current bay shore site and move the track to a yet undetermined new site. NoCal racing is dying. If it isn’t already dead…
I heard. Horse racing died in the BA a long time ago. It’s time for GGF to become something else. Horse racing is dead in Nor Cal. And if you ever stop to stand and face the West you are overcome by one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Bay Area—especially in the afternoon with the sail boats and the wind and the glare. It’s a spot worth more than it’s getting. That’s not a shot at horse racing. But it’s time to move on to something else there……….
They wouldn’t dare walk Pablo, would they?
Un fucking believable. Payback is mandatory. Plunk the first fucking Padre who’s up next.
Because they walked Pablo? They’re setting up the DP. Sucks for the Panda and us (or is it “we” help Pawlie) fans, but it’s the smart move…
It’s “us” Remove Panda from the sentence and ask “it sucks for us?” or does it “suck for we?” It sucks for us.
Now it sucks for the Padres who are just throwing the ball away…
Of course it’s “us,” you illiterate fuck up. Objective. enough. They deliberatley fucked Pablo. If you were yourself tonight, you’d be calling for someone to throw a ball in Qualls’ face.
You’re right about one thing counselor. When there’s been a wrong committed, I’m all for and not only advocate but would initiate a retaliatory move. However, in this instance, I think the Padres played it fair and square. Upset? Yeah, but I don’t feel wronged.
Yeah, like the Vichy French.
Wild pitch, we score and I lose the feed on MLB.COM. Help a blind man here Flappers., play by play?
Two consecutive nights of 6+ runs at Petco? Good stuff, Maynard. I can’t help but feel a little sympathy for Mosely. The Padres continue to give him the “Matt Cain Treatment” and then some. “A little help!”
Some encouraging signs from the 9th inning yesterday through this game. Michael is absolutely right that Torres is the key to this team’s offense. It’s possible that he hasn’t felt comfortable or confident for whatever reason… a game like this one could do wonders. So many keys, really, the rest of the way, as oft cited by Flappers, but yeah, Torres is the key. If he’s back on track, a lot of the “ifs” seem less daunting.
Well, let’s see. If they win this, Andres with 3 hits so far, 2 runs, 2 RBI, great catch, SB- that makes Affeldt the POTG
I recall some “Doomin’ Dude” to declare Torres to be “finito” just a short time ago.
That guy’s so money and he doesn’t even know it.
Ha, I knew this was coming. I already gave him POTG before you posted this bullshit…..
This must be a Flap first, posting a POTG before the game’s over.
let’s see where you are when he goes oh for his next 10. Silent, of course…….
What’s your point? You sound like you’re rooting for 0-10…Most of us are happy he’s started to hit. Even Doomin’ Denny..
Casilla was a stoopid choice. Even others noted it. Not giving it to Huiff last night was even worse. Now I’m going to turn in. Don’t go postal again.
Oh well, it was a helluva streak while it lasted. Plenty of more games left for the Panda to string together another 20+ run. Nice going, Orson Welles. I haven’t called him Orson in so long but I just felt the need tonight…Orson.
the *point* is that you sit on the sidelines silent about Torres shit year (mvp a month ago, right?) and then when he has his one good game a month you chime in with a bunch of “I told you so’s”. Torres doesn’t get shit for rope anymore. He has to start doing this consistently. Same with Huff, Ross, all of them. One game doesn’t mean fuck. Everything the guys did last year means nothing this year; The position players need to put up or just live off the contracts they secured last Winter………
