A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Baseball is Back and What Would it Take to Get Beltran?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 14, 2011

I was surprised to see only 7 games scheduled for today. Luckily, we are one of them. I can’t wait, it feels like a month since the last game……

Tim Kawakami actually wrote a decent piece today in his blog. Because of the $ still owed to Beltran this year there aren’t that many teams willing to trade for him. And Kawakami is right, this deal shouldn’t take Wheeler or Belt. The *Neal/Culberson* range is more like it. Throw in Hinshaw just cause lefties are always valued and I’m tired of seeing him wear that stupid, over-sized hat.

But here is the deal: Sabean is a little out of his league when it comes to adding a high profile rental. I don’t think he has any idea what to offer or how to negotiate this. I’d say the last deal he did like this was probably picking Winn up, but Winn didn’t have the resume that Beltran has. You could argue that he hasn’t pulled off a big mid season trade since the ’97 deal for Alvarez, Darwin and Hernandez. But those were all pitchers—that’s his thing. Trading for a stud hitter mid season? He’s never done it before…….

And we absolutely need to do a deal for another hitter. I would agree that this division is probably won with no moves made but don’t kid yourself, this offense is significantly worse than last year’s playoff team. It’s not even close, actually. If we started a playoff game today we would be missing Posey, Freddy Sanchez, Juan Uribe and Edgar Renteria. And we would essentially be missing Burrell,  Ross, Huff and Torres as well since those guys are shells of what they were last year. Replacing all those guys with Tejada and Whiteside and Fontenot and Jesus Christ  I can’t even type another name! It’s hideous. This team would hit .150 against the Philly pitchers in the playoffs. With no home runs…….

Our playoff batting average wasn’t too hot last year. I don’t have the number, I think Twin cited .235 but I don’t remember if that was WS or total playoff average. But what our hitters did last year, really from Sept 1st onward, is come up with the big home runs and timely hits that this crew just doesn’t have in them. We don’t have a hitter on the team with a double digit home run total. That is a staggering stat and an embarrassing one at that……..

So go get Beltran. And while you are at it go get a catcher and a 2nd baseman. And a shortstop. Succeeding in the playoffs this year demands aggressive moves for the offense BEFORE the trade deadline………

Sportsdude—- NY wants pitching prospects. With all the prospects the Giants have I might be inclined to give them Wheeler, simply because we’ve got several other pitching prospects that COULD be the next Bumgarner.I’d give them Wheeler and overpay and just be done with this. We need him, he’s a proven playoff stud, Wheeler is just a *maybe* at this point.

san dog, who I didn’t know was at the game, just texted me “we could be here a while.”

One too many breaking balls to Huff. Bell seemed a bit concerned about Huff’s ability to foul off the high fastballs. Maybe Huff’s back; maybe Bell’s still hungover from the AS vacation in Phoenix.

  6. willieD said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:31 pm

belt for a rental? hmmm…ever heard of jeff bagwell? John smoltz?

  7. snarkk said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:32 pm

Bell forgot to slide into the mound….

Parks by Home Run factor (sortable): http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor/_/sort/HRFactor

For 2011, sorting by HR alone, ATT dead last for favoring the hitter. San Diego’s Petco 9 slots above at 21.

(since there’s not real indication how this is formulated, I wouldn’t give it a ton of authority, but it is a point of data, at least)

    • xootsuit said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:38 pm

From ESPN? ah, take it to the bank.

  9. Sportdude said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:32 pm

I agree. I don’t know where Wheeler ranks among scouts vs Giants fans to know if that is overpaying for a hitter as good as Beltran. Hope you are right, and it happens quickly!

    • xootsuit said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:45 pm

The Giants traded away a couple of pitching prospects back in 2009 and the scales, to date, tip way over on the Giants’ side. The Giants know how to evaluate young pitchers.

  10. Sportdude said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:34 pm

Wiillie you are nuts. That is two examples vs hundreds and hundreds in ML history where a top prospect became nothing.

    • willieD said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:42 pm

how many games has beltran played last few years? He’s not a kid, and might play for us for 2 months. Why give up more than you have to? Last year it was Sanchez for Corey hart, lol.
You make a statement like bloggers here.wouldn’t trade belt for pujols, and I’m nuts?

  11. stixwiz said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:35 pm

Huff rings the Bell. Will wonders never cease? Goes to prove that one should never underestimate an opponent, particularly one who has rung the bell before but has been having hard times lately.

  12. willieD said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:37 pm

at some point the padres probably dump bell. they have good young relievers, are gonna need to find some offense, and dump salary. Hopefully he goes to AL.

  13. Flavor said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:40 pm

when I think of down and out dead-beat go-nowhere teams from the 70’s I always think of the Padres. Those old uni’s just screamed “we suck and there is no hope”. I don’t know who the AL equivalent was in the same time period. Probably the Indians………

    • unca chuck said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:56 pm

Those are their 84 NL pennant jerseys . . .

Almost as bad as the Pirates unis, or the Giants, or the White Sox . . .

Pretty much all the unis were crap in the early 80s.

  14. Flavor said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:42 pm

I loved the Bell slide into the mound at the AS game, but he needed to be smarter. Slide into home or 3rd on the dirt or go head first into the mound. But that slide he did could have ruined his career. Sliding on grass with cleats? Idiotic…….

  15. Flavor said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Chad Qualls sucks. Ruin him now……..

  16. Macdog said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:47 pm

Bell damn near blew 2-run leads twice last week vs. the Giants, so he had this coming. Hey, here’s our buddy Qualls.

  17. snarkk said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:48 pm

I’d give up Wheeler before I’d give up Belt. The Giants need youth on the field, and Belt is more of a known quantity than Wheeler. Plus, a starter’s potential can go poof in an instant with a popped elbow ligament or a torn rotator cuff. I think the competition for Beltran will heat up, and the Giants won’t be willing to compete to get him….

  18. Flavor said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:53 pm

    Snarkk- dead on post.
Hey, our good buddy Matt Latos only needs to win his next 9 straight starts to equal his record from last year. Fuck that fucking fuck……..

  19. Sportdude said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:53 pm

Thats my point. Longer the Giants wait the better the chance they miss him. Not a huge fan of his, just best available.

Willie.. I didn’t say I wouldn’t trade Belt for Pujols. Read the post. I said many of the rest of you wouldn’t…He has had one good minor league season. That’s all.

    • willieD said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:15 pm

I did read it, and you know if STL actually offered something like that, everyone here, bar none, would be all over it.
I like beltran, I just don’t want to give up anything like a belt, potentially productive young player at position of need, for a two month injury prone expensive rental., that we won’t be able to keep.
What I don’t get is the argument you make that SF is doomed vs. Philly or anyone else without him. I heard the same shit last year, that even other teams that didn’t make it like yankees were better than SF. Wasn’t true then, and pitching is still more important now, imo.

  20. snarkk said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:53 pm

How about Wheeler and Culberson for Michael Bourn? Bourn’s under team control through 2012, he’d tear it up at ATT…..

    • Flavor said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:55 pm

      yes. I’d do that deal…….

  21. Flavor said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:55 pm

I’d trade Belt for Pujols in a nano-second, but you would have to be ready to shell out 250 mil in the winter. Problem is, the Cards wouldn’t even glance our way at that offer……..

  22. Sportdude said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:55 pm

Not trying to be pissy, just make conversation. If the Mets say no to wheeler would you counter with anything else or let it die?

  23. Flavor said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:57 pm

If they so no to Wheeler then the conversation ends. But there is no way they say no to Wheeler. They simply aren’t looking at that big of a market when you consider he can’t be offered arbitration and he’s still owed 9 million this year–that cuts into a lot of team budgets……..

  24. Sportdude said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:57 pm

Game is too boring to focus on even with huffs homer. How sad is that?

  25. Sportdude said, on July 14, 2011 at 9:58 pm

I love Bourn too. That is what I was hoping Torres would do. I say get him if we can. Aha! Agreement!

  26. twinfan1 said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:02 pm

Wheeler is #19, I believe.Belt is #10.That’s in all of baseball.

  27. snarkk said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:03 pm

Bourn takes over LF. Next year, Torres is probably gone. Best case scenario would have Bourn and Gary Brown in the OF. The speed at the top of the LU would be off the charts….

Ha, Kruk just stood there waiting for his catcher to *relocate* Winfield. Those were the days……

  32. xootsuit said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:12 pm

Next year? That’s sales talk. This is this year.

  33. snarkk said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:13 pm

I may have missed it here, but I just saw from Baggarly that the Giants hired Riggleman as a special scout. At least now they have the straight poop on Pudge. He’s got the oblique thing now, IMO I thought he was a long shot even before that injury…

  34. twinfan1 said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:16 pm

Pequero is probably a better prospect than Browm, from what I’ve read.( but Sickels has Brown 2 and Peguero 4.).. Either way, it’s all good.

  35. stixwiz said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:20 pm

The All-Star break is a chance for players to get a bit of rest for the homestretch. Well it WAS a good idea. With this combination of two hitting-challenged and bullpen rich teams, this match could stretch halfway to infinity. Already the Dagos have reached into their BP for a PH (Stauffer).

  36. willieD said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:26 pm

pitching and defense, that is. pads have played good d tonite too, in the field.

    Cut Tejada RIGHT NOW!!!!

  39. stixwiz said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:29 pm

Appearing in the game so far 19 Padres and 16 Giants. Thanks primarily to those 2-inning relief stints SF is gradually wearing them down.

  40. Macdog said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:30 pm

    We’ll take it!

  41. twinfan1 said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:31 pm

And Tejada and Torres were first pitch hacking.,

  42. snarkk said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:32 pm

Those were two incredibly stupid situational ABs by Tejada and Torres. The little runt played it well and took the walk….

  43. stixwiz said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:32 pm

Those bases on balls can kill you. Issued so far: SD:4 SF: ZERO.

Nobody plays harder than Miggy. And Pablo’s back.

  46. stixwiz said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:38 pm

Now that’s Panda the All-Star. Atones nicely for striking out how early was that in the game? This one has been dragging on damned near as long as the Break. At 4-1 there should be some resolution coming fairly soon.

  47. Flavor said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:40 pm

Gregorson needs to ditch that half-assed Rollie Fingers stash. It’s only a good look in the Castro. This game has the feel of a Giants—Padres game from the 70’s— no offense, no fans, terrible uni’s…..Either way, it looks like we are taking advantage of their mistakes and Gregorson’s horrendousness and will probably win this game………….

  48. snarkk said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:40 pm

Gregerson clearly is off his feed. Super hit by Panda. He’s has been stellar. He’s come back far faster from the injury than I expected. It probably helped that he was already in great shape when he went down with it…

  49. twinfan1 said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:42 pm

Last year it would have been said that Panda was chasing a bad pitch. That’s a great pitch for him. Last year he was getting half swings and fouling them. Probably the weight.

  50. stixwiz said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Now the rout. Pads have used six relievers tonight. Count em. Giants are winning the battle of the Bullpens. That could tell over a four game series. Bochy is the BP Maestro.

  51. That's *mr* mrbill to you! said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:44 pm

Sux to be in Bud Black’s shoes right now. “How the Fuck do I get out of this inning and call it a night?”

Oh boy. The point is to not use Wilson

  55. xootsuit said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:57 pm

Bochy keeps using Lopez for long long stretches. Javier’s never gone past 60 IP per year before. He’s over 36 right now. Looks good. But still. The pen’s getting stretched a bit this year. Luckily, it’s a helluva pen.

  56. unca chuck said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:57 pm

    Burriss in LF . . . ?

  57. snarkk said, on July 14, 2011 at 10:57 pm

  64. twinfan1 said, on July 14, 2011 at 11:04 pm

  65. xootsuit said, on July 14, 2011 at 11:09 pm

Kruk’s apparently aimless replay feature about Pablo’s vicious LH swing-thru / back swing actually made a point. His right hand is healed. He showed no signs of discomfort on that back swing. (The hits and drives didn’t hur, either.) He’s back.

  66. snarkk said, on July 14, 2011 at 11:13 pm

Another super start from Bum, nothing to show for it.
POTG = Huff. That HR off Bell came out of the freekin’ blue.
Bell hadn’t allowed an HR in his last 99 appearances, in April of 2010 to Uribe of the Giants….
