A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Another Win, Another Day….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 19, 2011

As I noted early on, Vogelsong is nothing if not gritty and gutty. You can see it on his face and in the way he pitches. He’s been a revelation this year, there are no more words to describe him. We wouldn’t be in first place without him…..

With the rumor that the Rockies are going to become sellers, I think we can safely wrap up the western division right now. Arizona is a paper tiger. Sabean can concentrate on adding a middle infielder or a catcher at the break. Or later. I’ve crossed outfielder off our list of needs since Nate has solidified his role as clean up hitter and obvious team MVP. And Ross is doing enough to hold down the other corner spot. Torres and Huff continue to fail but they aren’t going anywhere so just buckle up and get used to it……..

The Flap Fantasy Baseball League

(Dirt makes a big 4.5 point move and at 12:29am The Aubrey Huff Era ended for BB’s. He hit the waiver wire. You think he cares about contracts? Baha. You produce on that man’s team or you stand in the freaking corner with your head down!)

Keppinger’s arrival likely means Franchez is having the surgery.
He just moved to the 60 day DL…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 19, 2011 at 6:55 pm

Not necessarily, he’d still be eligible to come off the DL this year. It was just an easy move to make room.

Well one thing about Wade…He loves his old Philly guys…Since coming to Houston from Philly he has acquired Bourn, Happ, and Myers from his old stomping grounds…With new ownership taking over and a team on pace for 100 plus losses, Wade better get real creative or he’s out of a job.

Loo, as much as I would have loved to have Lee a few years back (in exchange for Rowand) he looked dead last year and this year he’s even worse…Unless he’s completely un-motivated (think Berkman) which could be the case, I am not sure there’s much left ..Still if they did a swap, now would be the time to see what he has left…As Twin say’s, all moves are made with the Postseason in mind…A Rowand for Lee trade could take place after the deadline as both would easily clear waivers.

    • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on July 19, 2011 at 7:10 pm

Good points, WJ. Maybe when Keppinger gets here he can provide some insights about Lee…

  6. wilcojoe's avatar wilcojoe said, on July 19, 2011 at 7:05 pm

Fans in Houston are done with Lee…Dumping his salary (or any portion of it) for a bag of balls would make Wade a hero down here.

So who’s he working on? Beltran? Pence? Cuddyer? If they get an OFer, who sits? Probably Torres unless Nate or Ross go in the trade…
    Miggy hits the DL, BTW

Can’t afford to trade any starting pitcher. And no reliever is untouchable- problem is you can’t get enough for them.

I’m virtually certain that it was Keppinger who had, I believe, a 14-pitch AB to end the game, against BWilson, on a Saturday afternoon, Fox TV game. Maybe even bases loaded. You could look it up. That phrase, BTW, is credited to Casey Stengal, but Ralph S. Keyes, in The Quote Verifier, says James Thurber titled a 1941 Saturday Evening Post short story w/ that phrase; Casey Stengel popularized it.

Saw Chien Ming Wang pitch tonight after 2 years, for Syr. Chiefs against Buff. Bisons. Not stellar. So-so. A fan fave, though.

Regarding Beltran- trading away blue chip prospects for a rental is highly risky. The Braves did that a few years ago when they traded prospects to Texas for Texeira. Texeira didn’t help the Braves all that much, and the prospects turned into key players that helped Texas get to the World Series last season, and looking like a perennial playoff team.

Where the Giants may have the advantage with Beltran is that the teams that are being considered (Red Sox, Phillies, Braves) don’t need the bat nearly as bad as the Giants…I cant imagine those clubs giving up top prospects either…Someone will get a good deal on Beltran, might as well be the Giants…Of course the Braves and Phillies greatest motivation for acquiring Beltran may be in hopes of the Giants NOT acquiring Beltran.

Nice thing about keppinger is that he allows Bochy to have IF depth next few years without having to rely full time on too young (crawford/adrianza) or too old (tejada) for the SS position. No more stone fingers of burriss or hall, either when he plays 2b. Solid player…I’d rather have him than Freddy Sanchez or anyone else currently manning any middle IF spot.

I know there’s often a bunch of “Fruckie” bashing here, but his injury has put turmoil into the 2nd base situation, which the team must focus on instead of the black hole that is catcher. Keppinger hopefully alleviates that.

paul – I’m a Sanchez fan, I just think that folks (and probably, rightly so) just think the dude is too fragile. But man, that dude is a major reason for the 2010 rings (in my mind at least) and seems to me to be missed whenever he’s out.

    • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on July 19, 2011 at 9:15 pm

Third eye? Hell xoot, if most of the umps had just one more eye, they would be cyclops.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on July 19, 2011 at 9:20 pm

I still think Tejada fooled the ump at 2B the other day. The CF camera showed him losing the ball on the tag of the stealing SD runner, but tapping it back into the web of his glove before raisng the glove to show a snowcone. The ump was in the right spot, but blocked from the ball for a second.

Smart move by Tejada. It’s part of the game. Sometimes the ump’s mistake goes your way, sometimes the other. You wanna play video games? Play video games, but not on a baseball field.

      • Bozo's avatar Bozo said, on July 19, 2011 at 9:50 pm

I’m not sure what the video game remark is about, especially in reply to a very old ump taunt, about having one more eye to be a cyclops. Maybe you should save the “You wanna play video games? Play video games, but not on a baseball field.” speech for your little league team.

He’s not hurt or they would shut him down. Not sure what that’s all about but he’s getting the job done. As a Giants fan, how could you complain about anything these days?

57-41. 64 to go. Could be that Belt is more relaxed now that he’s back in The Show. And what a show he put on for the crowd at McCovey Cove. Betcha a big bunch of those fans are fantasizing about Brandon keeping it up. The power stroke is not likely, but he has all the makings of a great slash hitter, sending doubles down every alley in sight. Nate sags a bit from his recent heroics but Belt is right there. Pablo keeps on Pandifying. Contributions arrive from here and there in the lineup. Even though they weren’t scoring a whole bunch, i like the way they wore down De La Rosa. Addition of a patient, put the ball in play, good OBP man like Keppinger, probably in the 2-hole and the increasingly potent middle of the lineup gets more ABs and more chances at RBIs.

Bumgarner had one scuse me inning, but otherwise was nails. Four hits over 8 for the LaBumbos. Their season is going down the big swirly. No joy in Mudville. Wilson applied the coup de grace in facile fashion tonight. Why add drama when you are facing a very bummed out bunch.

One day in July Sabean pulls of a heist of yet another useful piece for the championship run in that trade with Houston and at the same time brings Belt back. Big day down by the Bay.
