A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Re-Match VS The Phillies

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 26, 2011

I’m excited for this game tonight. Mostly, I want to see if that bat is still attached to Ryan Howard’s shoulder. I don’t watch Phillie games because I don’t have a single position player of theirs on any of my four fantasy teams. So, literally the last time I saw Howard live was when I was streaking out of my friend’s house, into the rain and down the end of the cul-de-sac with my daughter trailing behind….

This series is about one thing: pitching. The Giants and Phillies are 1/2 in ERA in all of baseball. Who’s going to blink first? I believe the Philly line up to be getting a little long in the tooth, in both age and production. Guys like Howard, Utley and Rollins, eh, they just don’t inspire the same fear they once did. And yet, the Phillies have the best record in the National League. You can’t take anything away from a 3 game series. Three games is nothing over the course of 162. I’m mostly interested in seeing how the Giants carry themselves during this trip. We are The World Champions, a fact that was magnified for every member of the organization during their trip to the White House yesterday. And now we walk into a hostile stadium to play arguably the best team in the league with the full glare of the collective east coast media. How will it turn out? Really, the anticipation is the great drama. That, and wondering if that goddamn bat is still stuck on Howard’s shoulder……..

I believed Joanne mostly occupied the top-right square on the “Hollywood Squares.” Joanne would sometimes complete the diagonal tic-tac-toe after Paul Lynde.

“Peter Marshall: True or false. In Athens they recently discovered sketches of the great philosopher Socrates, revealing that he bore a striking resemblance to Paul Newman?
Paul Lynde: But he walked like Joanne!”

exactly, that’s where it started. But that was an hour and a half ride, they probably rolled into Philly around 8 or 9 o’clock— dinner somewhere with bottles of expensive champagne, off to a club for more drinks and to pick up a couple of Loo’s whores then back to the hotel to finish themselves off. Totally and completely believable and if they girls were doing coke all night what was Timmy gonna do? Go to sleep at 2am? He might have been up all night before he sent them on a cab to nowhereland………

“to accuse him of the things mentioned is out of line”
Why? Where’s this “line”? You miss an AS game in NY with the “stomach flu” in 2009; you get popped early in the morning for speeding down the highway in your Benz while smoking weed; you yell Fuck yeah! to an interviewer on live tv — you’re gonna have people thinking that maybe the next time you hit a huge bash on the East Coast and get the stomach flu it may not be the stomach flu. Could be a hangover, could be the stomach flu, could be a combination of both. Either way, it’s not the end of the world.

These next two games are meaningless. The rest of the regular season is meaningless. Get Beltran and a catcher and let’s start the playoffs already.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 26, 2011 at 6:51 pm

Huff is the same as the rest of them, he just stands out as bad because of his contract and the fact that Bochy keeps batting him clean up. This LU sucks. Did you guys catch the Philly/Giant HR stat? In 2010 they were like 4 apart for the year, this year the Phillies were about 30 ahead. This is not the same offense and it’s not good enough to win in the playoffs. Period………

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 26, 2011 at 7:07 pm

I can’t think of one poster here who objected to Huff’s contract…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 26, 2011 at 6:57 pm

Unless they can find a way to DL him on the back or whatever it was, very doubtful he’s benched altogether. Belt will just get some OF starts and spell Huff occasionaly. This has nothing to do with my recommendation, just what think to be the reality of it.Everybody is bitching now but there would have fan revolt if they hadn’t aggressively pursued Aubrey and signed him after last year…even though he figured for the down year as I detailed in March.

I understand why Posey isn’t there but Burrell? I guess his bargain basement deal wasn’t enough to keep his interest this year. Expected to hear the bitter end as I drove home this evening and instead heard the post game show. Damn fast for a really shitty game. During the post game, btw, the crew argued over player of the game for quite a while before finally settling on Worley. They couldn’t find a single Giant worth consideration. Amazingly, none of them remembered Utley’s inside the parker (thanks for the description, btw). Miller, Kruk & Kuip and Flem were ready to toss this game in the trash bin and move on.

Final hangover note: Could be a good thing, in the long run. If that’s what happened, the Giants know, and Bochy will have a private conversation with Lincecum about training, and nutrition, and the fact that they’re not paying him millions to get hammered the night before a start. He’ll weave some recent disciplinary tales into his presentation, by way of example. The theme, in the end, will come through: We would’ve dfa’d Pablo if he didn’t come around; we’re luckier with you. We can trade you. We’d rather just have you come around, however.

On the other hand, if it’s just the flu? Bad break with an upside. ABZ grows stronger.

One of the reasons the flu is always used is that dehydration is probably the most common symptom, and a hangover is mostly a severe case of dehydration. Many of the other symptoms of a hangover are also flu symptoms. Of course, it’s always the 24-hour flu for our staggering warriors- the same recovery period as for a monster hangover,

He missed his first AS appearance in the past because of it, and I doubt any kid would miss a “1st AS” if it wasn’t legit. Some people have otherwise strong constitutions coupled with a weakness for a singular kind of bug.

Having said that, it should definitely be a clubhouse rule that you don’t miss a start against the Phils! If it had been, maybe … uh ,,, the Orioles, well…

So I know a lot about problem drinking and alcoholism. I also know a bit about beating it. Unrelated then, but I would have ZERO chance with my current issues were I still drinking. I hope you find a way to quit also, if it’s not already too late.

Check out Marcus Welby, M.D. handing out the diagnosis of “wet brain” for your s truly. That’s rich. I bet your med school consisted of some night school correspondence classes from Costa Rica. And your conclusion that I’m no longer just a “mere alcoholic” and it being “much worse” is a doozy. “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on a Giants blog.”

Dennis, I don’t know how seriously to take the stuff you post about drinking, but I wouldn’t discount what TF has to say on the subject.

He admitted as much that he got too trashed to pitch that day. Something to the effect of Matty should have kept me on a shorter leash.

But really, how late to you have to hard-core it to miss the next night? I mean really, been there done that, but I always had to work in the morning . . . I made the call . . .

In the early ’80’s Brooklyn, you pretty much couldn’t walk into a bar on Flatbush Avenue and not see Chris Mullin…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 26, 2011 at 8:14 pm

Saw Mullin at 42nd Street in Palo Alto back in the day. Musta been around ’86. He was gonzo wasted. Don’t know when he hit the wagon, but it was near that time IIRC.

You’ve exceeded your “IIRC” quota for the day, Chuck.

Doomin’ Denny is attempting to get a commenter to say they’d rather win 2 games this week than make any improvements in the team for the rest of the year.,like I said: wet brain.

2 tix for upper deck behind home plate: $70

Hot dogs, fries, Cokes, peanuts: $20+

Set of Phillies baseball cards for daughter: $6

Finding out from the ticket taker 20 minutes before the game that Lincecum is out sick and Zito is starting: Hopeless.

Oooh, that does suck, Mac. Here’s hoping that was the last we’ll ever see of Zito. As for trading deadline, I’d be very surprised if Sabean does nothing. I doubt we’d see a trade along the lines of ’97 with the White Sox and so many players in the swap, but something is coming.. maybe something none of us has foreseen. Sabean will do that sometimes, and do it well. (I’m not one to bash him for some lousy mid-summer deals, I think he’s done pretty well at the deadline for the most part, as well as after the deadline).

Eli and Row-Row break the ice. Whodda thunk it. Already the looming presence of Beltran is felt as the outfield becomes ever more competitive and playing time becomes a premium. Several Phillies fans on the MLBTR site discussing the Beltran trade expressed a desire for Rowand to be returned to their team.
