A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

How to Score a Run and is Beltran *big timin* us?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 9, 2011

I know I shouldn’t ever be surprised about how inept our hitters are but I was struck by at least one small thing last night: We miss Freddy Sanchez. I used to be frustrated like many of you with his constant opposite field approach but we just don’t have a single guy in the LU who takes an at bat with that mentality WITH MEN ON BASE. Maybe Keppinger. Pablo can go opp-o but he’s not usually trying to advance a runner, nor should he, he’s trying to drive them in. Watching Cabrera bat last night was painful. There’s talk of moving him to 2nd and Kepp down but how would that change anything? Despite hitting 6th he was stil coming up in situations where, at the very least, you have to move the runner over. It was clear he didn’t try to do that in the slightest. Freddy, we miss you baby….

I’m not judging Beltran’s bat for a second, I’m sure, if healthy, he will come around. I do wonder if he wants to be here. He’s one of those vet-professional guys so it’s impossible to read anything from his body language or words, since he says nothing with both. So the thought did creep into my mind last night: Is he just some big New York star rolling through the end of the season not caring about the team but focused on next year’s big deal with a glitzy big market team? Again, it’s tough to tell. But I do wonder a little, just based off his production, his body language/interviews and now a wrist that seems to have nothing seriously wrong with it except for some pain. And again, I know about wrist injuries but not all of them are disastrous. Sometimes pain is just something you play through. There’s also this “Me first in right field” thing that’s is at least something to question in terms of his character and his desire to play team ball….

If he continues to do nothing or if this wrist is worse than the MRI is letting on I won’t sweat the loss of Wheeler. Sabean took his shot like any GM would do in this situation. So far, Atlanta and Philly have gotten the best end of the deadline trades but they did the same thing Sabean did, they took a shot now by trading some future away.

Anyway, I’m out for the day. I will try not to think about this stunning, historic, across-the-board offensive failure………

with our offense smoking copious amounts of pole, do any of you remember this game that happened 20 years ago today?

I don’t remember it. Nor do I remember Gmen 2nd sacker “Grady Litton”. Even if that’s “Greg” Litton, I still don’t remember HIM. 20 years from now, I won’t remember the Gamer, so it all works out in the end…

BTW, the Gamer has every reason to despise the fans here. It’s not his fault Sabean over valued him. He gave it his all, At least he didn’t have to be given a deadline to report, like Fruckie did.

weird. . . I do not recall that…but I do recall a Darren Lewis (pretty sure it was him) game around 2001 or so; he was on third; in June, against the A’s; Bonds at bat; tied game; Bonds swings and misses; Lewis scored because the catcher missed the ball .. BUT Bonds started to argue it was a foul tip! Which would’ve negated the winning run! The Giants eventually won and I always wondered WTF Dusty Baker said to Bonds, who clearly cared more about winning by HIS HR than merely winning. Or did not understand what went down.

I may not be explaining this right, but I was aghast and said aloud, he may go to the Hall of Fame but I will always remember this as an iconic act of Bonds’s stupidity or selfishness.

    From the last thread:
“The point isn’t baggng on Vogelsong, It’s that every fucking pitcher has been given the excuse of the poor run support except Sanchez. It;’s bullshit, and worse is the fabrication that Sanchez has been the awful performer that some claim.Sorry to use the term, but it applies_ it’s a fucking lie. He has not been as sharp as 2010 when his performance in August ( he might have been the only starter who didn’t gag up August completely) and September saved the pennant, but he’s still given up 3 earned runs or less in 14 of 17 starts. Lumping him with Zito was nonsense. I did give Voggy a pass for what I clearly said was a rare bad start and I hope that’s all it was. But I’m simpl;y more realistic about him than the Head Case bashers- as I said, right now, sure, he’d get a start over Dirty in a must win game, but is Ryan a keeper? Extremely doubtful, His history says he’s a cute one year story. The hope is that the inexplicable magic ride at least lasts the regular season. Long term, I ( and any knowledgeablr observer) would take Head Case over Voggy without hesitation. BTW, if you paid attention, even in that last start, the two HRs came on good pitches that the hitters had to go get, not the BP shit our “good guys” have been giving up. So I’ll rag on Dirty for a poor start as soon the hypocrisy ends and the other guys get the critiicism they deserve when they suck…
And one more note on this giving slack crap: EVERY player with a recent history of success, as in the previous year, gets extra slack. All. Not some. Except, evidently, Dirty.

I had no problem with Cabrera swinging away both times last night. As the No. 6 hitter, isn’t he supposed to try and get the runners home? Especially when the 7-8 batters are Aaron “I left my heart in Chicago” Rowand and Eli “Why didn’t he get suspended, too?” Whiteside.

And if a 34-year-old, oft-injured Beltran wants to secure one final score this offseason, he might want to show a bit more the rest of the way than he has the last two weeks.

    Grady Litton?

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 9, 2011 at 9:49 am

K and K pointed that out about Cabrera- no way he should have been trying to move them except to drive them in.
BTW, NO WHITEY and Gamer have higher OPS than Carlos. We know that will change. Please.

Doubtful whether Beltran is consciously dogging it. He has too much to lose come contract time by seriously dropping off at the end of the season as he’s getting out into his 30’s. Raised too many uncomfortable questions in the minds of potential suitors. The real Carlos should show up soon.

Like Ross, Beltran can make quite a name for himself (and the next contract) with late season heroics. It got rent a nice deal and a chance to play in cincy too, even tho he isn’t hitting much better than last two seasons while he was here.
Couple nice thing last night tho: Nate had some good hacks, used the whole park, and drove one opposite.
The DP was a really nice play, Font to Cabrera who gunned down Mc trying to score, Whitey holding his ground and applying the tag. Then next play he guns down Jones trying to steal.
Torres basehit thru SS…just has to happen more often. I posted this earlier about Burriss, how a LH who runs well can take the outside pitch the other way through the hole. You read the SS, and go either side of what he is giving up (up the middle or towards the hole). 3b have to come in on andres until he gets 2 strikes, so they have way less range.
Loo mentioned Madlock in the giants trivia quiz (guys with Pitt batting titles who came here)….he won the batting title first full year with the Cubs I’m sure, hit something like .354. “Slumped” to .302 with SF and reportedly didn’t care for the Stick much. Rest being history of greater success with the Pitt.
Honest tho, I don’t miss freddy sanchez at the plate; in the field, sure. That would be another guy who finished the year really well, that I would suspect wouldn’t be able to duplicate that. With his health issues, I think it’s entirely possible we saw the best moments of his career last summer.

It does no good to Beltran to coast through the rest of the season. He came here to show off his shit, and it isn’t happening. For whatever reason. If hwe comes in and scuffles the rest of the year, and the Giants somehow don’t reach the playoffs, it won’t look very good on his resume . . .

Not that it really matters in the long run, though. He’ll blame his hitting woes on the park and get his payday regardless.

Yeah, that was Greg Litton. Utility guy back in the day. The Steve Decker era . . . . Guy musta been thinking about Grady Little

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 9, 2011 at 12:12 pm

The overall point about moving runners over from the 6 hole is the fact that they had 3 opportunities where they had 2 on and one out. By the 3rd failure, maybe they should have tried something different.

Yeah the hitting will come around. Until it does, there’s going to be kvetching and angst . . .

  11. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 9, 2011 at 12:19 pm

Chuckles, that’s a pretty tepid response to the notion that Beltran may be dogging it. I would have thought you’d tear that apart. Wait, I didn’t say it, that explains it.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 9, 2011 at 12:38 pm

You don’t find that suggestion outrageous, without anything to support it?

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 9, 2011 at 12:44 pm

No, I don’t think he’s dogging it. But I also think that Beltran isn’t feeling any undue pressure to produce. He has a 0.05% chance of staying here, so he’s passing through like a summer breeze.

What pressure he puts on himself to be the best he can be is outside the realm of my understanding, based on the fact I don’t know him. He has done well over the years, and I expect him to come around. But if he doesn’t and the Giants miss the playoffs, he won’t sweat it one little bit, as he’ll get his payday from someone else. Guaranteed.

NO GM out there will say, gee, you dogged it with the Giants the last couple months. They’ll say, boy, hitters sure go to SF to die don’t they?

  12. willieD's avatar willieD said, on August 9, 2011 at 12:24 pm

OK, last of the Vogs rant. Fangraphs ranks pitchers by WAR, with big 3 of SF all being in the top 20, and vogs in the mid-50s, slightly ahead of Charlie Morton and Zambrano. He leads everyone in the NL ERA over all, but in last 30 innings, the league is hitting him at .310 clip, WHIP is 1.57, and the ERA is a full point higher at 3.45. Couple bad outings? Less than helpful ump? Stamina issue? August dog day blues that affected a few SPs last year that fought their way out of it? We’ll see.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 9, 2011 at 12:39 pm

The thing about Vogie that never seems to get mentioned is he throws a lot of pitches per inning. Lots of 3-2 counts, lots of foul tips, lots of long ABs. Therefore he doesn’t go deep into games. Bummie has the same problem. They are in and out of trouble. Vogie wiggles his way out more often than not. Yesterday he wasn’t as fortunate as he has been this year. Whether he can keep on this path remains to be seen, but Mike apparently wants him to crater so he can justify his feelings for him.

Nyahhh. See, Mike? I can play yer asinine games too.

We all have our choice for rock-bottom of the season. For me, it was those consectutive ABs by Cabrera and Rowand, after two runners on and no out both times. And after I had given some praise to Cabrera the other day. As for Rowand, just change his uniform number to 5-3.

Actually, if the lesser minds can remember, it was others who said Vogelsong would be out of the rotation no matter how well he pitched. Now, Chucklefduck, I don’t have “feelings” for Ryan, I’m sure he’s a fine young man. He just doesn’t have a history that suggests he’ll continue his success. He, as much as any other reason, is why the Zitter is being kept in storage..

Bochy made the correct decision that not giving up an out and giving three guys a shot to drive in at least one run was the proper move. He was right, If the hitters had been, say, Kepp, Panda, and Nate, he probably goes for giving up one out..

  17. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 9, 2011 at 1:17 pm

What started this “asinine” game was Willie correctly pointing out that last night Ryan pitched as Dirty is accused of performing-the response was that Vogelsong had earned some slack while Sanchez hadn’t. That is, of course, a patently absurd notion, as anybody who has had a recent history of success ( as in the previous year) is AWAYS given more rope than otherwise would be the case. That’s not to say that Vogelsong doesn’t deserve a pass for last night, I clearly said that it was a rare poor outing. What’s outrageously untrue is that Sanchez DOESN”T merit any slack.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 9, 2011 at 1:36 pm

Bullshit. Huff gets no slack for last year. Burrell? No. Sanchez? No. If Timmy was as bad as Snachez has been, he’d get scorn and ridicule. Cain, the same thing. They aren’t. Sanchez’s problems have been myriad. Forgetting to cover home. Forgetting to cover 1st. Spacing out on the mound.

In the end, who gives a fuck? Your righteous indignation is admirable, Mike, but this is a fucking blog. This shit is worth the vapor it’s posted on . . . People get pissed over Drrrty? maybe unduly so? Tough shit. If he pitches better, the love will flow.

Look at Bubbles. EVERYONE pretty much knew the shoe would drop. No one really expected anything other than what he turned back into. 3-0 stretch regardless. Everyone rode his ass.

This is my take and you can flame me afterwards if you want: Rowand is a stand up guy. More important, he has ALWAYS given 100%. On my visits to the bay area, where I have attended games, I’ve seen him make unbelievable plays in the outfield. Twice I’ve seen him go full speed into the left center field wall, disregarding his own safety to make the catch.

This isn’t an anomaly, e.g., you probably all know the story about his DL stint in May 2006 . . . In the first inning of a game versus the New York Mets, Rowand made a spectacular play by smashing into the center field fence of Citizens Bank Park face first at full speed in order to run down a deep fly ball off the bat of Xavier Nady with the bases loaded, that would otherwise have scored three runs. Rowand suffered a broken nose and severe lacerations to his face. He underwent seven hours of surgery to repair the nose, and was placed on the 15-day disabled list. He returned to the starting lineup on May 27, 2006.

The fact that he isn’t a better hitter here, than he was at Citizens Bank Park, probably has 4 reasons that I can see (Twin or other stat mavens will probably spot more): 1. He was surrounded by good hitters, so he saw better pitches; 2. He played in a “band box” vs. SF’s pitchers park; 3. He was in the prime of his career; and, 4. I suspect the contract is a daily reminder and puts so much pressure on him to succeed that he is always pressing.

Regardless, it wasn’t his fault he put his John Hancock on that 60 million dollar contract. Someone put it in front of him. Besides, I would never diss anyone for trying to earn all they can earn – my only prerequisite being that they never dog it and NO ONE can say he has ever dogged it.

Great take on Rowand, Blade. You’ve done your homework. Maybe some others have noticed this over last night and in the bottom of the first tonight: Beltran’s presence in the lineup seemed to give Panda some extra spark beyond what he had already. The current absence of Carlos may have taken something out of our third baseman. Sometimes big guys like him play off their emotions a lot. Guess we’ll know more in his upcoming A.B.’s.

Blade, well said re Rowand. I’ve tried to say the same, but you articulated it and made a case. I’ve always seen him as a team player and 100% effort — though as we said yesterday maybe that 100% needs to take a different approach to hitting.

Plus, remember when he got hit in the face last year or ’09? He was back as soon as he could manage. He’s not called Gamer here for nothing. But frastrating as a hitter? Yeah. So are many others, so are many others. How’s Burrell’s foot — case in point.

Has anyone heard of Joe Posnanski, besides Pawlie and Twin? He is a senior writer at Sports Illustrated and also wrote, “The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O’Neil’s America,” which won the prestigious Casey Award as the best baseball book of 2007.

Anywho, he came up with the “Worst Everyday Player In Baseball.” This list was for 2010 and had 3 criteria:

    (1) Poor performance.
    (2) Indications that the performance will never again improve and that the team is trapped.
    (3) All-around awfulness — just being subpar at one thing (like Carlos Quentin’s outfield defense) is not enough.

I would have had Stewart, a good bunter, bunt to get the runner over to third, then take my chances getting the runner in with Fontenot or whomever with one out. I don’t understand why Bochy doesn’t play for the 4th run there. Result, nada…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 9, 2011 at 9:26 pm

So I’l presume you have a definitive result on your idea?

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 9, 2011 at 9:32 pm

He did play for the fourth reun- three guys had a shot to drive the runner in from scoring position. You can’t show that your idea had a better chance of getting a run.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 9, 2011 at 9:36 pm

A passed ball gets the runner in from third. A sac fly ball. Neither happens from second, where only a hit brings the run home. Bunting the runner from 2nd to 3rd when there’s no outs is the smart play, the percentage play…

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 9, 2011 at 9:48 pm

Even though Stewart is a good bunter, you cannot presume it will be successful. Buntmorons always presume the bunt is successful. And you neglect that three hitters have a chance to drive the runner in from second.the Bochy way. The percentages are better.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 9, 2011 at 9:52 pm

I presume a bunt will be successful more than I presume this squad will get a hit. Stewie’s hitting about .210. He’ll get a bunt down better than 1 out of 5 chances. You’re dog paddling in the deep end on this one…

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 9, 2011 at 9:58 pm

There are numerous studies on this, Snarkker. Even a succssful bunt lowers the chance of a run eventually scoring. An unsuccessful bunt, of course, lowers the chance even more. One of the very few reasons to attempt the bunt would be if the pitcher were up.Bruce can take care of this. You’re at the bottom of the lake, pal. Do some research.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 9, 2011 at 10:02 pm

The studies, whatever they are, IF they exist, don’t involve the 2011 Giants. I want the runner on third. I don’t need studies to tell me there are far more alternatives to score from there than second, especially with a team that is hitting at .100 with RISP the last fortnight…

regarding rowand, i would add one other thing to your analysis: his swing has too many moving parts. you can get away with that when young (and surrounded and in a bandbox etc.). but as you get older, the hands/eyes slow down that small amount. and the fact that he practices his ass of is unfortunately irrelevent as he practices the WRONG thing.
