Ready to Steamroll the Astros
My friend Luke hates it when I predict a win on the blog. Says I’m always wrong. Says it’s a jinx. Ok Team Lukie, I won’t predict a single win. But I will predict a 4 game sweep of the Astros. At a minimum I guarantee 3 of 4 but I think a sweep is likely….
Question for you: Would you trade Dirrrrrty Sanchez for Heath Bell? You get Bell for Sept and the playoff run. Since I think Wilson is done for the year I think you almost have to try to make this trade happen. The Padres would do it, I think. Dirrrrty is usually tough on them. No hit tough. They probably over value him because of that game. If you give ’em Dirrrrty you wouldn’t have to give up 2 prospects, something Pads will look for since they get 2 picks for him when he leaves this Winter. I think Dirrrrty has at least one more and maybe 2 years of arbitration left……
The Flap Fantasy Baseball Standings
(Berra’s Bombers slides past Dirt and takes aim at The Clown)

Trade Dirty? NO FUCKING WAY FOR A CLOSER. Why? Closers are a dime a dozen. Pay attention to MLB clubs, i.e., they are not giving big contracts to relievers anymore, after the subsequent disaster of Rodriguez of the NY Mets and a few other closers who had hiccups this year (Franklin, Marmol, Soria, Francisco, etc.). Also, hasn’t anyone else noticed how if the “closer du jour” doesn’t accept a reasonable contract offer or doesn’t pitch well, they go to their key set-up man (see Ryan Madson, Jordan Walden, Brandon League, Fernando Salas, etc., etc.).
Couple that with Bell’s strikeout numbers having taken a hit this season, as his rate has dropped from 11.06 K/9 to 6.79 K/9. We don’t need no stinkin’ 33 year old closer, especially for a good number 3 pitcher (Dirty). Pure lunacy to even consider such a trade . . .
If he can’t play SS/OF with RH pop or speed, no.
Good comment WillieD!
I was going to post my own trade proposal and get comments, but I would not trade Sanchez simply for the fact that I don’t want to face him 3-5 times a year. The other reason I don’t trade him for Bell is that I thinlk we are going to move him this off-season for a bat and I think Carlos Quentin should be our target, a true clean-up masher from the right-side.
But what if the Padres ask for Romo and Surkamp? Romo definitely has closer matertial and would think that the Padres would want a potential closer in return.
Would you all do that deal? I think I would with BWislon being a big question mark right now. Snagging Bell would be the biggest coup this entire season and imagine a Bell-Wilson post-season combo….they would put fear into the Brewers and Phillies….
Blade, point taken on Bell’s numbers, but are we sure Wilson is going to be 100%? Having Bell as insurance would be a huge move…
I don’t have a problem acquiring him, but no way for Dirty. I think what Twin has said regarding this claim being a “blocking” move is what this is all about, similar to Ross last year. However, if we get him, great. I just don’t want to give up too much for him. I want to exhaust in-house solutions first (see Bozo’s comment below).
By the by, good comment regarding acquiring a bat . . . Hell yes, I would trade Dirty if we were able to get a bat. Quite frankly, I think everyone is out to hose us right now, while we are in the middle of a pennant run. Colorado screwed Cleveland on the Ubaldo deal because Cleveland is in the middle of a pennant run and decided that their prospects were expendable. Bad, bad decision on their part in my opinion. Let’s consider trading Dirty when the dust has settled (next season) and Sabean and the rest of the Giants brain trust can think clearly and from a position of strength.
I’d try Hembree out before trading Dirty. Hell, I’d move Mota into that the closer role for now, let someone else burn up innings.
Mota’s the long reliever. He’d be the 5th starter before he starts closing.
Blade is right. This is an old argument. Take a look at the save percentage column here:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2011-reliever-pitching.shtml#players_reliever_pitching::13
The closer remains the most overrated role in baseball.
Okay, so maybe I’m not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree but how are these statistical charts evidence that the closer remains the most overrated role in baseball?
They don’t.
I have soft spot for Sanchez, but I see BF’s point here. He’s a free agent after ’12 and represented by Boras. Even though he reached his potential in ’10 and the Giants know he can be a great pitcher, my guess is they don’t want to play that guessing game on their watch or payroll — especially while they try and secure Lincecum/Cain/?Wilson and handle the massive arbitration cases of Pablo/Buster/MadBum. Essentially, ’12 is a lame duck year for Sanchez. He’s also due for arbitration, and even though he’s been a disappointment this year he might even get a raise to 5-6 million. That might make him an unusual non-tender candidate. So Sanchez is expendable, and given that his value is at an all-time low, perhaps an overrated Bell rental makes sense.
I think the point is moot, though. There’s just no way SD trades Bell. They’ll probably re-sign him and if they lose him they would love the draft picks. One year of Dirrrty probably doesn’t stack up to two 1st round draft picks in today’s market. We did our job by blocking Arizona/Philly/Milwaukee.
I’m more interested to see if we can swing a Dan Otero for Ramon Hernandez deal. Ramon is no savior, he’s 36 and his second-half stats suck. But he’s still an upgrade.
I’d do the trade just because I’m done with Mr. Clean’s ‘potential’ tag, his inconsistencies, walks, space-outs, HBPs, and the usual 100 pitch, 5 inning outing. He needs RJ here to hold his hand and stroke his ego.
If he was improving, sure. But this year he’s regressed.
Harsh thoughts indeed!
regression is not all bad, I was once a superhero
The closer role may be overrated, James. But how far can you go without one? Closer by committee rarely works. That’s the deal we are likely looking at given Wilson’s past TJ surgery and his current elbow problems.
Casilla can close. Sabean can’t plug every hole in every dike. He may be thinking it’s just not their year and let the people he has step up. 55 out of the last 56 weren’t their year…
The Sanchez for a few weeks of Bell is not worthy of serious comment.I’ll just say that those who are for it are
basket cases.
Right again, Twin.
as if there was another
Better another 7-12 season and diminishing returns down the road? They could very easily work a deal after this season for Bell.
Bully.
The deal won’t come down to Mr. Clean anyway, but Wilson could very well be done the rest of this season AND next. Depending on how hard the Giants push this means thay know something about Wilson that the rest of us don’t. The fact that the TJ surgery was even discussed is a bad omen.
No one here knows how much of Dirty’s “regression” was injury related. In April and May he was 3-3 in 11 starts, 64 IP. 47 H 34 BB 71 K 3.37 ERA 1.26 WHIP. This “putrid” pitcher’s regression began in June when he walked a batter per inning and had a 1.8 WHIP. Again , we simply don’t know how much MIGHT have been injury related. But bet your goober pickin’ ass that GMs are going to pay a lot more attention to 2010 and the first two months of this year than one month that clearly appears to be an outlier more than a trend- if he’s healthy. In short, the Pads would do that deal in a millisecond.
Or maybe he’s outlived his due date, Mike. Excuses be damned.
He ain’t the first pitcher to wash out, and he won’t be the last.
That’s a significant “maybe” to trade him for a few weeks of Bell, Really dumb, Chuckles. But pay attention here: it’s not fucking happening and not because SD wouldn’t do it.
Chuck is a football guy. Pitching is a foreign language to him.
Bell Tweeted “No Trade” already…… Done and done… I don’t get how people are automatically assuming Padres get two draft picks for Bell. Don’t they have to offer him arbitration in order to receive comp picks? He has said publically several times he would gladly accept arb (probably $10 mil+)….. SD screwed up big time I think unless they sign him for a “home town discount” for a few years…
The two draft picks are often an impediment in moving a guy, of course. Now, I don’t buy the vastly overrated bullshit but no way I’d give up those picks for any relief pitcher. Few teams, if any, would.. And, please, look at the guy.I’d bet Pad’s management had multiple coronaries when he did his routine at the ASG.
As far as our closer, Casilla had a good save but his control can be scary bad. I’d go Affeldt, myself. And gosh, I’m going for a white guy.
RHBs wear his ass out. Not likely.
Touche, twin
If .238 is wearing him out…I think the two of you just suffered mortal sword wounds.
As a full-time starter, Mr. Clean has gone 3 of 4 seasons with a losing record and an era of 5.01, 4.24, and 4.26.
WHIP? 1.45, 1.36, 1.44
His lone good year? 3.07, 1.23, and he led the league in walks.
So, which is the abberation?
THIS year, he’s been lost out there. He forgot to cover home and 1st base on consecutive plays. Is that due to injury? Or is it something else? He’s 28 fricking years old. When will he reach that elusive potential? And you saying he’s been playing injured is unadulterated horseshit. I guess you could say that Wiliam Vanlandingham was hurt. Or Atlee Hammaker. Or Shawn Estes. Or maybe he’s yet another in a long line of flakey Giants LHPs.
STFU, your animus toward him is way over the top. Instead of spouting his numbers in a random fashion, you might note the improvement EVERY year through 2010 in ERA and WHIP. I didn’t say he was playing injured, I said we don’t know. When a guy goes from the numbers he had in April/May to those of June and subsequently lands on the DL, it’s far more likely he was injured than the dumb fuck argument that his “shelf life” has expired/
RHers hit .238 against Affeldt, BTW. Just once try being knowledgeable before you post your bullshit..
Animus? You are so full of shit, Mike. i don’t like him because he’s never going to be as good as he should be. I think they should cut their losses. Or shitcan Bubbles, and make him their 5th starter. He’s the fricking Alex Smith of the baseball world. Malevolent forces swirl around him to keep him from his ‘rightful’ potential. When will it come to pass?
RJ was right when he said Mr. Clean has the best stuff on the team. If he can’t control it, he isn’t going to succeed in baseball. Plain and simple. As far as his injury theory goes, we don’t know? Who does? Has his velocity fluctuated? He certainly has struggled with his control for all of his years in the bigs.
To what do you attribute his neglecting to cover bases during a game. Mike?
I’ve covered that, write it down and discontinue your assault on the man:
“Dirty is a very talented pitcher with control and concentration issues. He is not a fucking basket case.”
Since the numbers on Dirty from 2008 through 2010 showed improvement every year, Chucklefuck had to have intentionally scrambled them in an attempt to show that 2010 was an aberration, not a progression.
Those were 2008, 2009, and 2011, in order. I left out 2010 making the point that it was the abberation, you moron. If you can’t figure that out, too bad so sad, twinkles.
In other words, 2011 is an acceptable progression from 2010?
Got it, twinkles . . . .
You could make the aberration argument if 2008, 2009, 2010 hadn’t shown progression every year. I’ve covered 2011. The April/May numbers certainly don’t show the regression you fraudulently claim. Last year his best month was September. Look, you attribute his June and later numbers to whatever you fucking want. I’m saying the regression in June and beyond is the aberration and MIGHT be injury related. The fact that that enrages you so much is ridiculous.
Whio’s enraged, twinkles? I’m just giving you his numbers. You are the one falsely claiming I’m trying to confuse the issue.
If you want to wash and cherry-pick his numbers, have at it.
What is so funny is you think this matters. Stamp your feet, call him hurt, or come up with other reasons. He’s got the stuff, he just can’t consistently get the job done. Like many before him, and many after him.
Last September is but a distant memory.
This year?
April? 2-1 2.73 era
May? 1-2. 4.06 era
June? 1-2 4.91 era
August? 0-2 7.71 era
Exactly when did Mr Clean get hurt?
One good month followed by 3 bad ones. What to make of that?
He’s been hurt since 4/30? No one else noticed?
sliding past dirt isn’t easy; any slide past him gets you Dirrrrrty.
I should have had Bozo by now, but me batters are being Clowns.
and this whole 162 games is a long season has gotten my boys right where it hurts.
fielder going 0 fer 8 was typical, not a blip on the wrong radar
ed – You just need to get your batters to face my pitching, they’d get better in a hurry.
Per Jim Bowden . . . This is how a deal typically gets done:
“Let’s go through a hypothetical trade. We’ll use Carlos Beltran as an example since he’s likely to be traded this week. When it all begins, the initial phone call can be as simple as this:
“We have made an organizational decision to move Carlos Beltran by the trade deadline. Do you have any interest in the player?”
Unless the club says “no chance,” then every other answer should be interpreted as interest. The next step is to talk about each club’s needs, wants and direction. In the next conversation one of the two clubs will give an initial offer. And the usual response is some variation of, “No, but I would do …” This can go back and forth for a year or an hour, depending on your needs and level of urgency. Remember, more than 95 percent of the proposed trades that teams discuss never come to fruition.
Once a deal is agreed upon, there are usually several approval steps remaining, including but not limited to the following:
1. Ownership approval
2. Team president approval
3. Medical approval (which often includes a physical by the team physician)
4. Accounting (budget) approval
5. Commissioner’s office approval
6. Agent/player approval if he has no-trade rights
While you’re waiting for approval, you inform the media relations department so it can get to work on a press release or, depending on the deal, a news conference.
Then each GM talks to his respective players. Once all of that has taken place, the GM officially calls a news conference, which by now means that ESPN’s Buster Olney, Tim Kurkjian, Jerry Crasnick, Jayson Stark or Pedro Gomez has likely already broken the story, so it’s old news.”
Per the Flap . . . This is how a deal typically gets done:
Flapper X says, “Let’s trade fucking Dirty.” Flappers Y and Z give their endorsement. Flappers A, B, and C argue against it. Concurrent with this, Flav puts up a poll to vote on it the next day. Flappers vote and debate the merits of trading Dirty. By game time, we’ve forgotten the trade and are watching the game. Two weeks later, we discuss trading Dirty again.
Next.
Is Nipper the laziest commenter in the history of blogs? Just askin’.
I wouldn’t say his comments are “lazy.” When I think Nipper, I think “Seinfeld.” Much like that was a show about “nothing,” so go his comments. It’s really brilliant when ya think about it.
BLEEP otiose faineance!
sniff ad nauseum
Except Seinfeld was also be unpredictable
Was also be? I’m either conjugating a verb or dangling a participle
Nippy’s posts to me seem more like those balloon inserts of Biff, Bam, Boom! etc. in the old Batman TV series. Up to the viewer to decide whether they spice the visuals, or clutter them up…
Nipper’s very frequent posts suggest someone who might be bed ridden or otherwise restricted. I can empathize with that so I’m less inclined to criticize him than most. And of course I pay him good money to agree with me..
How about a raise, Boss?
otiose faineance!
Party on Garth
I think they’ll trade Sanchy in the off season. It’s a case of dual player/organization fatigue. He needs a new venue to see if he can finally find the key to unlock the “potential”, the Giants are probably tired of trying to help him find the key. Unfortunately, his trade value is lower now due to the continued inconsistencies and injury. If they could get a good outfield prospect in return, that would be helpful…
Sanchez’s performance this year aside I think they have to hold on to him. Zito is still going to suck balls next year and Vogelsong may try to parlay this year into a payday. So what is Boras is his agent won’t SF still get some sort of draft pick compensation if Sanchez leaves in 2012.
If Zito goes, then Sanchez can be the 5. If Zito stays, they can’t have both of them in the rotation. Vogelsong gets the nod over Mr Clean.
BTW, Mike. Mr Clean’s May numbers were awful (1-2, 4.09) He’s had one good month this season. And that was April.
When did he get hurt?
4.09 is not “awful”, you dumb piece of shit. Average for an NL starter is 4.00. And stop fabricating what I post- I’ve said injury might account for the huge drop off in June. There has yet to be a verdict on that. It would also just be a mechanics issue. The least likely is that a 28 YO pitcher’s “shelf life” expired.
Verdict on his imaginary injury? Gawwd. you ARE high.
Now it’s mechanics? Fuck, there’s no end to the excuse train.
If Timmy pitched those numbers, you’d be smacking his his ass like a rented mule.
He did.0-5 7.82. It was mechanics…
Just think of Chuck as my very own Margaret Dumont
Rowand for Bell would be just as fucking dumb an idea, just in a different way.
Rowand for a cheese sandwich on the other hand…
Hell, if they wouldn’t give up Heath Bell, if they’ll take his contract I’d trade the Squatter for a Heath Bar…
Not even ham?
Just saw the poll. A huge “Nay” to that deal. Assuming Romo comes back, they have any number of relievers who should be able to fill that void between now and the end of the season.
I’ll again note that I hope in the next CBA that part of the deal is allowing players to be traded for draft picks and/or a combination of picks and players. I think the additional flexibility of being able to trade picks would make for a lot more interesting movement on trade deadline day, and afterwards during the waiver period, not to mention offseason as teams tweak their rosters. San Diego is unlikely to give up Bell for mediocrity since they have two picks coming if he leaves for FA. If the Giants could give the Pads their 1st or 2nd round 2012 pick along with a current minor league prospect of some sort, that might tip the balance to doing a deal…
So you would trade a first round pick for a few weeks of Bell? There are deserving people needing your air space.
Chuck, what if Vogelsong goes too? That’s why they have to hold on to Sanchez.
the giants have one thing they cannot trade. I expect to see a lot of it these next weeks.
Well, one way or the other, they’ll know about Voeglsong when they make their decision on Mr Clean.
Much like they’ll likely know what’s going on with Wilson when they make their decision regarding Bell. Whether now or during the offseason.
Unlike Mike’s ethereal diagnosis of Mr Clean, Wilson’s elbow injury could be a very bad one, based n his earier TJ surgery.
It’s pretty much acknowledged that Wilson may been hurting earlier than when it came out. It’s hardly uncommon. And if you lie about what I post again, I’m going to have Soph move in with you,. I never made a “diagnosis”. I said it might be injury related, no one without a bone to pick would disagree. That Number 2 Platter go down wrong?
You said it might be an injury. You said it might be mechanical. It MIGHT be neither. Is that a possibility? It’s hardly uncommon to hide injuries, but for 2 months? Riight. What are his symptoms? Wildness? Forgetting to cover home? Pitching shitty?
You misrepresent shit all the time around here. Can’t take it? Wahh!
Bone to pick? Surely you jest. You are the queen of overreaction . . .
I’ll wager that injury or mechanics issues are a bit more likely than expired shelf life.
As I’ve reasonably stated, he’s a talented pitcher with control and concentration issues. Now move on, you’ve adequately displayed your willful ignorance..
OK, then Sanchez is a head case. His elevator doesn’t reach the top floor. He’s a couple sandwiches short of a picnic. He’s a couple brick shy of a load. Based on his non-ability to cover bases properly, his ability to walk the 7-8-9 guys while k-ing the 3-4-5 guys.
The lights are on but no one’s home. He’s 28 years old, and he’s regressed badly this year. When WILL the lilghts come on?
The shelf life reference (duh) referrs to the fact that his best years could very well be behind him. Gawwd, do I have to spell EVERYTHING out for you?
Wasn’t BW signed to a contract by talent that thought he was as healthy as I do?
publicity wise his shenanigans this off season had better not end in disability.
Uh, what? Anyone that has had TJ sugery comes with a fair amount of speculation. lots of guys have gone on and pitched succefully. Others haven’t come back. I don’t know the numbers for those haveing to go through it 2x. All I know is it’s a long rehab.
His travels around the world led to elbow inflammation?
There’s absolutely no guarantee that anyone would give up two top draft picks for a relief pitcher, however good he is.Even Sabean probably learned his lesson with Tire Fire. And Bell’s conditioning certainly can be questioned. Any\way, it’s a stupid thread, no such trade was ever happening. Now let’s get going on some speculative LU bashing..
Bell’s beard is kinda scrawny for a closer.
I still think someone other than Mota could fill the long relief role. He’s got the stuff and attitude to close out games until wee Willy comes back.
I’ve been meaning to ask this for a few days because I obviously I missed the original post but when did Mr. Clean become a nickname for JSanchez? And what’s the connotation?
To my knowledge only Chuckles uses it. You see: “Dirty”, “Mr. Clean”….It’s like dubbing a fat guy “Slim”. Very sophisticated stuff.
. . . or an idiot perfesser, perfesser . . .
Ahhhh. A nickname to a nickname. Got it. Thanks
Since Drrty hasn’t been very dirrty, what’s the opposite? I know it’s too advanced for baseball humor, but hey, you plays ’em as you sees ’em.
A teeny weeny bit below Pauly Shore humor..
is Pauly Shore still alive?
Bochy has said he’d go with the best match ups in the 8th and then close with whoever is left. Besides being the best manager in the game, he has a great sense of humor. Not for the Caddyshack II crowd, however.
Forgetting all the rest of the bullshit, a 28 YO LHer who has regularly had among the lowest BA against in baseball is a valuable commodity.
Yeah, like era, whip, and w-l . . .
Today’s vote currently stands at 19/18 No trade. Yet when I had Flav put up the Dirrrty for Jose Reyes deal over two months ago that was renounced with a resounding No vote. Something like 80/20. So you’d rather trade Dirrrty for five weeks of Bell instead of over half a season of Reyes?
Go look at yourself in the mirror, then punch yourself in the goddamn face.
How much of that time was Reyes on the DL?
i don’t know why you guys keep saying “5 weeks of Bell”. It’s 5 weeks plus another 4-5 weeks of playoffs–the most important 4-5 weeks of the year…
It isn’t happening. He’ll accept arb and either make a lot of money in SD or, knowing that, they won’t offer it and, freed of the draft pick give away, a team will overpay him in free agency..
If the “yeas” would ID themselves, it would expedite bed assignments in Room Bermuda- after the last debacle, I will remind you: toes to noses, boys..
anyone trying to sit and watch A’s/Yanks (I’ve fallen asleep twice)? They’ve been playing forerver and it’s still the 7th. A’s were up a bunch early to start, Yanks have two slams since, 10-7. 12 HRs in the 3 game series (6 each I think), about 25 hits just today. these two teams, btw, are 3rd and 4th in ERA in the AL. what a yard…anyone who thinks Zito could pitch here is out of their mind.
It’s astounding how many dunderheads have thought he could pitch in the AL East. Just imagining it almost makes me feel sorry for him-almost.
there’s a difference between expecting he could pitch successfully and hoping that the yankees would get desperate enough to make the attempt.
Cashman is not a brain dead couch potato.
no HE’S not, but i’m not so sure about his boss. and sometimes they get involved and say, “get me that guy!”. The guy that saved that franchise was bob watson when steinbrenner was banned for a year. That gave bob the opportunity to work through the draft and prospects which became jeter, williams, rivera, posada and a few others.
Yeah, I was making my assault on Flav, Tizzle, No Talent, and CrazyDiamonds in the Flap League and Phil FUCKING Hughes dropped a 20.25 ERA and 2.62 WHIP in 2.2 innings on my team.
Pfffft!
Ya shoulda kept Fister 😉
I was the one that believed in Hughes, youngster, 18 wins last year, nice FB.
so give him to me with Peavy; come back player of the year.
Then drop yore attitude about the post season and all the SFGs not making it.
Ehhh Haaa
No idea what you’re talking about Mr. Ed . . . Giants are going to the post season and you can take that to the proverbial bank.
Funny. I thought I liked baseball. Hell, I thought maybe I even loved baseball. But I would never take the time to watch A’s/Yanks. So maybe I’m just a homer.
Though I’m an admitted “foodie”, a plate of kidneys and beets just doesn’t work for me. So it goes for an As/Yanks game.

“Hell, I thought maybe I even loved baseball. But I would never take the time to watch A’s/Yanks. So maybe I’m just a homer.”
Who’s Zito?…
I think he’s a restaurateur
would you eat a Zito burger?
Yes, but only it it comes with free post-meal Yoga stretching instructions and an ayurvedic colonic……
forevrer translated as meaning 3 and a half hours currently. Yanks had the bases loaded again (hit slams in consecutive innings) with Cano who had hit one earlier up, and the tony cloninger was brought up.
You guys, and baseball fans in general, should be thankful for the Snakes giving the Giants a tussle in the NL West. It’s the only race still to be decided. I know the Halos are only 2 1/2 GB of the Rangers, but that won’t end up being close either. Outside of our race with the Snakes, Sept. ball will be practically null and void. And along comes big-old-bad football to grab all the headlines and TV ratings — again.
Pigskins were meant to be fried, not gridironed.
I like a clear easy win, with drama, and my team coming out on top
so there
girardi probably expected same when he started Hughes today…melvin might have too being up 7-1 with Harden on mound in the 4th. It’s now 17-8 in the 8th and Yanks have bases loaded again, Granderson up.
Me and my buddies took the bus to the Stick and saw the Cloninger game, part of a Sunday DH. Those were a lot fun.
Cloninger, btw hit .192 for his career with 11 HRs. As I recall, Renie Martin was a pretty good hitter too.
Sunny f-ing beach…Granderson just hit Yanks 3rd slam of the game…21-7.
That’s 3 grand slams now for the Yanks, but then they’ve had the bases loaded something like 20 times over the last few innings.
22-8 as andruw homers for the evil empire…..Who wins the AL? I don’t really follow them closely. One of Yanks Boston will end up WC; fight for the division only the prelim for the main event. And whomever loses will have spent a ton of money on it.
22 runs? That’s the Giants’ budget for a 10 game homestand….
And Yanks-A’s finally ends on a hardly routine 4-3 — Posada to Swisher.
that throw looked like something out of steve sax.
what is general east coast opinion on yanks rotation? who stays/sits for playoffs?
I don’t know what their plans are after CC, but Burnett is certainly making a strong case to get himself Zitoed for the playoffs.
From baggs,
The Giants activated catcher Eli Whiteside from the seven-day (concussion) disabled list and optioned Hector Sanchez to Single-A San Jose. To keep him close in case Whiteside has any more headaches, I’d imagine. Sanchez will be back in a week when rosters expand, anyway.
If you thought the Giants were desperate, well, the Houston Astros are pitching Henry Sosa on short rest. That about tells the story, don’t you think?
SS Cabrera
2B Keppinger
RF Beltran
3B Sandoval
1B Huff
CF Ross
LF Belt
C Whiteside
P Vogelsong
Houston may be a lot of things. But from where they are in the standings I’m pretty sure they passed desperate a looooong time ago.
When they brought up Hector for Whitey, I think I put the over/under at Hector’s ABs while El Presidente was out at 2, maybe it was 3. He got one — a single and RBI…
Unbelievable…Posada is playing second in the 9th, and the last play is a routine two hopper hit right at him with the rookie catcher at bat. He picks it up, crow hops and then bounces the throw to first and almost gets his 1b killed, who ended up sitting on his ass. 4 and half hours….A’s scored 9 runs on 15 hits and lose 22-9.
Even fosse admitted, the Yanks could have scored more.
why the f did the DBax dump that allen guy? He can rake.
think about the moves they made: marquis and ziegler, aaron hill and a puff ball SS in mcdonald, dumping off kelly johnson and brandon allen. Doubt any of that works out.
Agree willieD . . . Hill and Johnson are basically the same guy. Low batting averages, with some pop. I had Hill last year on my FL team and he was frustrating as hell (i.e., never duplicated his 2009 season). Similarly, Johnson seems like a carbon copy of Hill.
I agree. I said at the deadline that nothing the dee backs did scared me in the least….steamroll starting in a little less than 3 hours…
Lincecum is a great pitcher and really shitty hitter who regularly hurts himself with total ineptitude at the

the plate. Cain is a good pitcher who hit a HR in the 13th century and has since been labeled a good hitter. Vogelsong is the feel good pitcher of the year and a pretty fair hitter as well. Bumgarner is an extremely promising young pitcher who has not hit as advertised. Sanchez is a talented but disappointing (in 2011) pitcher who has become a pretty good hitting pitcher. That accurately covers the pitching and hitting skills of five of our starters. Next: who’s the head case: the place kicker or the 340 pound lineman?’
The kid . . . he thinks that’s Tim Tebow . . .
Whither Sandy Koufax? Where’s the hate for his hitting? He was on light hitting teams hinself. .097?
It kept him out of the hall, right?
Gawwd. Yer ego knows no bounds. Since you thin it’s important, it must be.
Get. Over. Yourself.
I don’t hate Timmy, he’s just a shitty hitter. So was Koufax. Don’t hate either one. Like a lot of pitchers, they don’t (or didn’t) give a shit about hitting. That doesn’t lessen their greatness as pitchers but cost them a few more wins. There would be a helluva lot of bitching going on today if Tim hadn’t helped himself, and hence the team…
That 22-9 travesty isn’t real baseball, and the Yankees should have been required by the league a while back to make a rightfield adjustment. Raise the wall higher or something. Hopefully the Yankees get knocked quickly out of the playoffs.
Make-up post from last night’s Timmy debacle — not particularly effective…
So, out of curiosity, Mike, what should Timmy’s hitting line be in a given season?
.240, 2, 15 RBIs? Is that acceptable? Realistic? Right.
.180, 0, 10? 5 RBIs? What?
Just as well as he’s capable, whatever that is.It’s sure as hell not .102. Look, I said he was a shitty hitter, it’s true. You fucks made the big deal out of it. Were you happy he got the game winner last night? I was. Don’t you think it would be cool if happened just a teeny bit more often? Now move the fuck on, I’m done with it.
Pitchers should NOT bat. Too inept.
Bonds was in town last night for today’s hearing in fed court before the trial judge for the hearing on his motion to throw out the lone obstruction conviction. The judge heard the arguments, will decide later. I’d bet she will deny his motion, trial judges don’t like to overturn a verdict. Plus, his argument is partially based on faulty jury instructions, so she’d be second guessing herself if she tossed the conviction. I think this one’s headed to the 9th Circuit — at least another year of this…
Snarkk, you’re an attorney, right? Why are the Feds wasting time with this case? Does something like this make “their bones?” Same thing with the Senate . . . a bunch of grand standers that should be worried about this *#&%@! economy and putting people back to work.
Frickin’ priorities are out of whack in this country. Mark my words – next year or perhaps, the year after, the “London like riots” come to our shores, but exponentially times 10.
They’re in way too far now, Blade. They could have cut out some years back, but chose to go after Bonds for his high profile, his attitude, lack of cooperation, some say his race, whatever, one or a combination of all. Different administration too, when this started. They should have known they had a dicey case, went ahead with it anyway. For now, IMO it’s a matter of saving face, they got him on one count, the most obtuse of them all. If the conviction gets tossed on appeal, I seriously doubt they’ll try again, the jury leaned toward acquittal on the “lying” counts.. But, I think they don’t want to make that choice to drop the re-trial until after the Nov 2012 election, if they can avoid it. In this poisonous political climate, that decision would be a sword against Obama’s administration that many would be happy to swing…

Why does your site freak out when the text extends below the stupid square yer typing in?
chuck no one ever complains about this site but you. 🙂
yawn…..
Unc, I’m not getting into the middle of your argument, but I don’t see anything wrong with pitchers, all of them, becoming more adept at the other aspects of the game. I know it’s political, but Maddux won countless gold gloves. He could handle the bat and field his position, just another part of his game that made him so elite, and helped his team win, bottom line.
with a team that struggles to score runs, it would behoove all the Giants SPs to make an effort to improve their results at the plate. One rbi for the season, just recorded yesterday Aug 24, I think leaves some room for improvement. What exactly are these guys doing btw starts, anyway?
didn’t the tigers choke part of the WS because their pitchers couldn’t field and throw out guys bunting?
Actually, it seems Glavine was even better hitting pitcher. This is fairly interesting:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Silver_Slugger_Award_winners_at_pitcher
In fairness to Timmy, when I was at AT&T, during the pre-game warmups, I saw him take batting practice. I also saw him in the outfield shagging balls and making some unbelievable catches out there (that I noted on the Flap too) while shooting the shit with other team members, also shagging flies.
By the by, to me, that is one of the best parts of going to a game. Getting there early and watching both teams go through their warmups.
Yet to mentioned, new injury updates (and other stuff) per Schulman:
Wilson: Played 6-7 minutes of catch for the first time since he went on the DL with an inflamed elbow. Wilson had no complaints. Next step will be determined by how he feels tomorrow, but Bochy said it’s fairly obvious Wilson will not be ready to pitch when he is eligible to come off the DL on Wednesday.
HSanchez: Optioned to Class A San Jose, so he could be close. He can return Sept. 4.
Schierholtz: Still in a walking boot. Hope of a quick recovery fading. He could go on the disabled list when Andres Torres is activated Sunday.
JSanchez: Still not throwing off a mound. Still wearing a boot (on which he drew a Louis Vuitton logo, because he is a left-hander). I asked if Double-A starter Eric Surkamp is in the mix for Sanchez’s spot Saturday. Bochy said everything is on the table.
Romo: Will throw off a mound again tomorrow. If all goes well, activation Sunday.
Posey: Drove his big truck into the players’ lot today and hopped out himself. He is limping but no longer using a walking boot. He plans to go to Arizona soon to continue his rehab and hopes to catch a bullpen session sometime in October. Note that he did NOT say he plans to scoop balls at first base in October.
Burrell: He had two hits in a rehab game for San Jose last night and will DH there again tonight.
“H Sanchez?” My brain went into a mental fugue when you mentioned this Sanchez . . . Thinking, “Who the fuck is this?” Freddy is on the DL and so is Dirty . . . Then I remembered about THAT Sanchez . . . Hector the catcher.
Frickin’ musical chairs with all the obscure players is getting hard to imprint on my brain housing unit.
hahaha. I see you left out Schulman’s Zito update.
Cold, man, too cold
heh… well I didn’t “forget” about him. I believe he’s pitching off a mound in Ottumwa, Iowa. Or Brainerd, Minnesota? Would you believe, Nome, I’ll ask ya?
The point is, it endemic of major league baseball. Not the Giants. Most pitchers don’t work on hitting. That’s how it is. Should he? Sure. Does he. Probably not. My point is, Mike seems to enjoy pointing out stupid things about Timmy. His eating habits, his inablilty to hold runners, now it’s hitting. Ancilliary things. Timmy fields his position well. Golde Glove worthy? No, but he gets it done. He bunts well. How many opportunities has Timmy had to drive in runs? Hard to say when there aren’t guys on base for him. He’s had maybe 4 ABs with RISP.
Sanchez gets a pass when he doesn’t cover home, walks a shitload of guys, and basically bollixes up most of his starts. His problems are ‘mechanical’ or ‘an undisclosed injury’. Not, geez, he fucked up bad there. Wonder what he eats for lunch.
Timmy solved his holding runners on by going to the stretch all the time. Did he change because of his trouble holding runners? No. He did it because he feels more comfortable pitching that way. For now.
To bemoan Timmy his hitting woes is to indict baseball for not stressing hitting for pitchers in college and the minors. Where a lot of the systems use the DH.
This and the previous post are for WillieD.
The reason LaRussa bunted a shitload is because bunting isn’t done much in the AL. He figured it was worth a shot, and it worked.
The times I’ve seen Timmy hitting BP, he’d bunt 3 or 4, and swing away the others. He hit line drives, and a few over the wall. 10-15 ABs. Do I know what he’s thinking in his head? No, but he’s not working on his pitting like the other position players. He’s working on his pitching.
In other words, his fielding and bunting have helped his cause. His going to the stretch has helped his control, and as a side bonus, helps him hold runners better.
Now he needs to get better at hitting? How much can you realistically demand of the guy?
His control has not improved, it’s worse. He’s walked more this year than all of 2009. And his innings per start has gone from 7 that year to 6.6. Just fact checking…
“Sanchez gets a pass when he doesn’t cover home, walks a shitload of guys, and basically bollixes up most of his starts. Bullshit, I just don’t make a 24/7 crusade out of bashing him. Nor Timmy, you dumb shit. He is, as I’ve said many times, a great pitcher. but he deserves criticism for his shortcomings as much as any other player. . … BTW_ terrific post, as usual, from Willie.
Maybe Timmy’s hurt, Mike. Maybe it’s his mechanics. I don’t hear those excuses coming from you for Timmy. That’s reserved for Mr Clean. Because Timmy eats In-n-Out burgers, he deserves your scorn.
I don’t bitch that much about Sanchez, Mike. yer just hypersensitive to it for whatever reason. But you constantly pick shit on Timmy, and he gets a pass. You’ve been laughing off Vogelsong all year.
Yet Sanchez is the guy you’d turn to, even now, down the stretch. Over Vogie.
Ludicrous.
“he” being Mr. Clean.
“Yet Sanchez is the guy you’d turn to, even now, down the stretch. Over Vogie. ” Never ever said that. And never “laughed off” Vogelsong.I’ve said I’d be surprised if his run lasted but I’ve NEVER suggested I wanted it to end. You really are quite the little Snarkk impersonator today. You totally made up that I’d turn to him over Vogelsong.. Whatever his issue is, I wouldn’t start him over Pat Fucking Misch until staff thought it was resolved…
I did wonder if Tim was hurt when he had the 0-5 & 7 plus ERA last August, wondered about his mechanics as well.
NL should get realistic and adopt the DH! Pitchers are lousy hitters as a rule.
Great post, Bil. Thanks.
Snarkk, thank you for your take (above) on Bonds and his trial, etc..
De nada. Now, watch the judge throw it out next week…
Of course, whatever we may think of him as a ballplayer and of the ridiculous PED hysteria, they also went after him because he’s guilty of what they charged him with.
That makes him the Martha Stewart of baseball, I tell ya!
Off subject, I’m pretty tired and I have a day of boarding up windows and shit so you West coasters bring on a win (or four),I won’t be able to stay up for it tonight. You other East coasters (Loo, Pawlie, GH and whoever else), I just wanted to say stay safe. It looks like we will be taking the first hit but you guys will probably be getting your share. Goodnight Irene and veer to the East you bitch.
OK, back to your regular scheduled programming . Tonight on the Flap, The Caveman Could Hit.Starring Don Robinson, a man known for pulling a butt muscle and when his manager (played by Roger Craig) was asked how long it would take to heal said “I don’t know, have you seen the size of that thing?”. That might not be an exact quote, but pretty damn close.
Cheers all.
Good luck Bozo
Batten down the shoes! 🙂 (stay warm and safe, may it pass as only a blip for you.)
John, I understand that Irene is the real deal for the outer banks . . . You and yours be safe. No material thing is worth you and your loved ones’ safety. Give us a shout when this is over to let us know you and your family are safe.
Never been through one of those- hold on tight. You’re one of the good guys, you fucking clown..
You and the animals stay safe. And that includes that damn camel of yours from New Orleans. 🙂
thanks for checking in Clown. I thought about you all back on the east coast as I was picking tomatoes in 80 degree weather. It’s inconceivable to me that the weather could be any different in the Summer time. But stay safe and check back in. I’ve known 3 *Irene’s* in my life, they’re all cool as hell. Let’s hope for a miracle with this one and maybe she does *veer right*. Talk to you later, whenever you guys in that shit can check in…….
and I haven’t responded to the pitcher/hitter shit today because I got sucked into it last night and escalated a thread that needed less energy, not more. Sorry about that, I could see most of you trying to post around that bullshit, hoping it would just end. That was all my fault, I know most of you aren’t interested in sifting through a blog argument……
just checked. Tie vote? That surprises me, all I’ve done is read the comments today and I just assumed it was mostly a nay. I guess the nays don’t want to discuss the reason behind their votes and that’s fine. You want to have an anonymous say without being skewered, that’s cool with me. Hey, all I was doing was throwing it out there, I don’t think for a second it’s going to happen……….
Look at the vote total, that’s about 30 “drive by” votes anyway. Who the fuck are the ringers?
Go look at the normal vote totals, you’ve got the clearance. What a fhcking fuck you are to suggest “drive by voting”. It is the normal number we usually see unless you can’t fuvking read. Do not ever fucking suggest I manipulate a vote here or you will find yourself sucking dick at the splash. Fuck you. Do not ever put this in writing on my blog again you fuck. And respond to me in email only on this or bye bye’s room b
“. . . picking tomatoes in 80 degree weather.”
Don’t know why, but when I read that, I was thinking of the Flap Godfather putting orange rinds in his mouth and then dropping dead of a heart attack.
🙂
Washington being not really helpful — T9 D-Backs 5-1
We shoulda traded for Dirrrty for Reyes like I wanted to earlier, and this trade talk for Bell would be moot.
Loo, don’t even bother correcting my use of the word “moot.” I know. I know. Hey, you have any SPARE CHANGE?
When I lived in Houston, we had a very rough tropical storm blow in while I was there. Winds got up to about 70 mph in some places, blew out a ton of windows in skyscrapers downtown, and dropped about a foot of rain in less than 24 hours, downtown was flooded. Never been in weather like that before or since. Makes you humbled before nature, and grateful about the great weather we have on the WCoast. Yeah, we get some EQs every once in a while, but I’ll risk that. Since a hurricane would be worse than that shit I saw in Houston, I don’t want to be near one. Good luck on the ECoast…
fighting a cold, hopeful to avoid the pneumonia I got in ’09, when I watched the Prince Fielder Bowling Charade from my laptop in a hospital room
Magnus, Twin, Blade, Ted: sent your CDs out today
Outstanding. Thanks
Did he touch 3B headin’ for home? Too late to appeal now. That point is MOOT.
With all those Grand Slams (3) hit by NYY today, I thought McCovey once hit 2 for us in a game but can’t confirm.
I’m positive McCovey never did it. Guys who I know did it are Tatis (in one inning), Cloninger, Northrop and Lazzeri…
Northrup.
And Northrup came to bat a third time in that game with the bases loaded but struck out, I think. I remember that from the baseball book “The Year Of The TIger,” about that ’68 season.
Do any of you guys know the origin of the usage of “salami” for the slam?
I don’t know that one…
Vogelsong took some damage there for openers. Houston kidz are hungry.
Well ain’t that cute. GDP not only snuffs out any possibility of a rally but also keeps Sosa’s pitch count down.
Anybody watching the Houston telecast? WTF was Sabean trying to stuff in his mouth?
