A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Another Discouraging Loss

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 10, 2011

I don’t think I’ve ever stopped to acknowledge how brilliant Lincecum’s year has been. We’ve all heard about the “10 starts without receiving any run support” stat. I just looked up his last 7 wins. In those wins he’s given up 1,0,1,0,1,1,0 runs. That’s just what you have to do if you want to get a W as a starting pitcher on this staff. Ask Cain what it takes to get a win. He’s been here since 2005, has a career ERA of 3.35 and his record is 68-72. Voggy made a single mistake in his last start and took the L. Bumgarner has won 3 starts in a row–and he’s given up 3 total runs in those starts. That’s just what you have to do when you’ve got the worst hitting team flailing and failing behind you……

This is why I think Cain and Timmy, and eventually BUmgarner, will be leaving for the Yankees or Red Sox when they break free of the arbitration shackles. They’ve got their World Series ring, they have their place in history. If they ever want their place in the Hall of Fame, they need to start piling up the win total. Big time. Cain is in a much bigger hole than Timmy but it is an utter joke that Lincecum is 12-12 with a freaking 2.68 ERA…….

Extremely excited to see Voggy pitch in person tonight. He’s probably going to be over-amped as he’ll be feeling the weight of the Willie Mac Award as he takes the hill. But I am in the minority (and have been all year) since I think this is not a one-year wonder thing for him. He has decent stuff but what has always impressed me about him is how well he locates his pitches throughout a game. When he gets into trouble it’s because he’s trying to shave too much of the plate early in the count. He’s got the stuff to go after them early and finish them off late with the location. I wouldn’t hesitate to give him a 2 year deal for 6 million (total)………

The Flap Fantasy Baseball Standings

(I continue to lead, though my lead is dwindling, Blade gear up for one last assault on the top spots and Denny picks up 5 in one day? Very nice. Unlike the NL West, the Flap League Title could go down to the final day)

That was a classic tortous defeat from years gone by, a must-win game, Padres blow their lead, Kemp gets thrown out at second for the third out, but they blow the call and we proceed to blow the game.

Even Affeldt’s injury had the hallmarks of what would happen to this team in years past.

It was a great run for two years and we got our long-awaited championship, the next one will not hopefully take 50 plus years…

Flav, thanks for the props in the FL league . . . I still have to get by John (CrazyDiamonds) and of course, Pat (Tizzle). Both of them have played outstanding FL this year. They obviously are the odds on favorites to make a run at you. Nevertheless, I’m going to give it my all. I’ve made 131 frickin’ trades, FA acquisitions/drops, and other moves to even be this close, which shows you how much I want it. Besides Giant Head’s 130 moves (another keen competitor), everyone else in the league has only made 60 moves or less.

I am so far ahead in my other league, that other than setting my daily lineup, I could give a rat’s ass about it. Interpretation? I WANT TO DEFEND MY FLAP CHAMPIONSHIP AND AM ASKING BOCHY FOR HIS KITCHEN SINK TO THROW AT YA TOO! Anywho, regardless what happens – again, thank you Flav for introducing me to Fantasy League sports last year.

Go Giants! Let’s finish strong regardless of how the standings shake out – I’m still basking from last year’s World Series glow πŸ™‚

Last night, not sure why, chose not to watch, just follow online. i think it was to avoid pain. But a better attitude would’ve been: watch Timmy, enjoy him when you can, you never know how long he’ll be with us (true for any of us, alas) or if he’ll . . . stop right there [was gonna do a riff on Affeldt; not funny].

Actually, I think Timmy is too West Coast to go to Yanks or Bosox. Plus Yanks would have him shorn. Yeah, I know for money and all that [look what Damon did to his hair]. But I think if he were to flee it’d be to Seattle. Correct, you don’t rack up wins there, either. Yet.

    Enjoy the game, Magnus.

    And congrats, Wilcojoe.

Yeah, Pawlie, the cup’s almost empty. I don’t see the Freak going to warm humid weather stadia either; Cain and his family hopefully have settled in comfortably enough in SF to stick around too. It’s a nice place to pitch in, competitive team, park full of fans, and can’t believe Giants would scrimp on a contract for either.

Vogs is your classic woody type nibbler…if he has a friendly ump and gets a team willing to extend the zone to chase, he’s fine. Imo he is also the most likely to be outta there in 5; he doesn’t have the “stuff” to blow people away. He stormed the league in the first half, second half the numbers are more pedestrian. Sure I realize he wasn’t going to continue a lights out pace. His ERA last 10 starts is 3.29 and the league is hitting .260 off him, with the WHIP around 1.40. Very respectable…but even at home he hasn’t been the same.
So,,,where does he go from here is my question. Can he maintain his pace another year, or have we already seen his best and he only gets progressively more hittable? Interesting he is matched up vs. Kuroda, as I think they are a lot alike, and could easily have reversed records 10-6 vs. 11-15.
Have fun and enjoy, craig and keep us filled in…i start b-ball practice tonite so i’ll check back in after game over.

It’s beyond absurd to be guessing what these pitchers will do when FA is upon them. I supppose if one is going to believe that how the team hit this year is how they’re always going to hit.. well, you already be able to see how ridiculous the conjecture is. There will be many factors they’ll weigh, having the ring( well, one so far) will be a plus, a beautiful stadium, great fans, how well they’ve been been treated here, how this year’s injury plagued, and stupidly maligned offense looks THEN…yada yada. but stiil, as with most players it will come to bucks, people.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 10, 2011 at 10:07 am

As far as rackin’ up those wins for the HOF, get real- Tim, yeah. Matt ain’t going to no HOF, and it’s silly to even start thinking about MadBum. You also have to consider, as heretical as it sounds to the “Tim is God” crowd, whether they’d be wise to offer the Zitoid type contract somebody else will offer Tim. You feel real comfy giving him 25 million a year for 6 years? Cain’s a different case- Tim has pitched even better on the road than in SF, Cain much better here. As much as he’s been shackled with poor support, he’s also benefited from being a fly ball pitcher at pitcher friendly ATT.
So- it’s absurd to even discuss MadBum yet, I think Cain would be extremely amenable to an extension here, and they might be wise to move Timmy after next year when his value will be highest due to contract status. This ain’t Timmeh hate, it’s just simple: no way any pitcher should be given the kind of contract he’ll fetch.

  6. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 10, 2011 at 9:49 am

The thing that’s good about Vogy is not just his control, but more his attitude and grit. He gets in a little trouble, he seems to double down and really grind to get outta Dodge. Compare to Zito when he starts to flail — the difference is mind boggling. I said yesterday I’d go a 1 and 1 contract at $5M ( 2.5 per with club option in year 2), but $6M would be fine, too. He’ll want 2 years guaranteed. I don’t know what his status is, whether he’s gonna be a FA or they have some kinda control over him…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 10, 2011 at 10:23 am

His contract status isn’t updated at BR, RotoWorld says he’s a FA for 2012, but Cot’s doesn’t list him as a FA, so I dunno. Now I see the Merc claims he has one more year of arb before he become a FA. So I doubt he’ll be going for a two year deal unless HE thinks it was a fluke. Another good year and value skyrockets. So most likely he gets one year here. Tough to find a comp- Dirty got 4.8, he won’t get that. Sydney Snarkk’s original guess of 2.5, but just one year, sounds right.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 10, 2011 at 10:31 am

Agreed. The fans want to see Pill, Belt, Crawford, Henry Sanchez, etc. Nobody wants to see Huff whiff on any more down and in sliders, or Whiteside flail at catching more balls in the dirt. Read Huff’s interview with Baggs, he’s mentally tuned out. Let’s make the next 3 weeks useful for next season, instead of playing out the string with dudes who for sure won’t be here next year. If they play the vets so they can make some contract milestones or some such, that’s crap…

Not only simple, but rational as well. It’s completely idiotic to think Lincecum will improve from his stellar performance to date. I am unequivocal in NEVER extending a long term high dollar contract to any player, especially pitchers who are likely to have seen their best days in the rear view mirror. This is especially so for pitchers. Let another team shake the dice, e.g., NY – Beltran, Colorado – Hampden and Neagle, Washington – Werth, and our own Giants – Zito and Rowand. The list goes on ad infinitum (or nauseum) of teams who thought they would be the exception.

By the by, this is different with regard to managers – as I pointed out in Mike’s poll the other day. Bochy is still the same manager he was last year and deserves a long term contract. It’s not his fault that all the players were injured this year. He made lemonade with lemons this year and for that, he should be praised.

  11. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 10, 2011 at 10:35 am

As one of the more sensible writers noted, with a year left on his contract, they’re not going to humilate Huff by sitting him the rest of the way.So unless he’s DLed, he’ll get starts. They know what they have in most of these guys, as I’ve pointed out, these are fringe propspects who won’t be challenging for regular play. I’d be shocked if we saw any all “kid” line ups. Two or three at a time, and I hope not more until the Bum series is completed. If they manage to pick up a game or two- keep the dream alive for the real fans…

  12. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 10, 2011 at 10:36 am

Bochy should not be extended. He’ll never manage young players properly, and that is where this team needs to go. After next year, he will and should be gone, and hopefully so will Sabean…

I’d bring back Cody real cheap…..like Burrell cheap. Doubt he’ll have many offers. Good back-up OF.
Get Pagan for CF and pray that Belt can hack it every day. Andres looks hopelessly lost at the plate and the other night he even screwed up on the bases. Giants are a rich team. Long string of sellouts. They are a large market team. No, not a huge market like NY, Chi, or LA, but large like Boston, Philadelphia, Houston and Atlanta. So financially they are near the top of the second tier and should set their payroll accordingly. As i’ve noted before, i despise profiteering capitalism in baseball or anywhere else, though pure free enterprise is fine by me. What we have in most of pro sports is the former, however. My ideal for team ownership is the Green Bay Packers, owned as i understand it, by a subscribed fan-base. What could possibly be better?

So my take is that at the very least, even ultimately in their best interest, team ownership should not look to their organizations as cash cows. A modest profit is okay by me, but look at the McDivorceCourt mess down in LaLaLand. They have been milking an incredibly wealthy franchise for richboy’s toys and richbitch glitz. My point, then, is that Giants ownership should realize they have a good thing going right now and be ready and able to reinvest heavily in the team and in the player development system. To me that does not mean going for the Prince Fielders, the Albert Pujols or even the Jose Reyes types. But it does mean keeping the core pitchers as well as Panda and Posey. It also means going after .280, 25, 90 free agent types when available and if their careers have not already begun downward trajectories. If they are not available this year, then the next. It also means scouting the hell outta every possible prospect or demi-prospect in every system out there and making trades for guys who might address holes in the system or on the big team.

Scouting, scouting, scouting. Rather than invest two-three million extra in a slowly slipping superstar instead of just a solid performer, that money should go into scouting and player development. Scouts and coaches do not command huge salaries. Giants should go for the best, even outbidding the huge market teams for those services. One superlative scouting job or one breakthrough piece of developmental coaching could readily provide that extra margin of excellence on the field which would make the difference between copping the consolation prize and winning all the marbles.

No long-term contracts to anyone over 30 who comes from outside the system and be damned careful of such contracts even with homegrown players. Three years max ~ and that would be a third year as team option. This team should have learned its lesson by now regarding bad contracts. There are good young players out there. One way or another Giants should get them and maybe even start stockpiling.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 10, 2011 at 11:33 am

Good post Stix – especially agree with you in regard to scouting and player development system (which by itself wont cure everything that ails a team . . . see my recent post a few days ago regarding the Rockies). As I said previously, I’m also on board with you regarding long term contracts. I am sending you an email with a link unrelated to baseball (that you may have already seen, albeit, there is a chance you haven’t . . . very interesting article by a former Republican operative).

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 10, 2011 at 11:49 am

It should be remembered that teams don’t trade “good young players”. As a rule, they get those 6 best years out of them when they’re young, good…. and relatively cheap. Pablo made 500K this year..
Some bad news for Snarkk, I’m not going to be renewing your contract as Spokesdoomer for Room B. The young cynics feel they’re not getting enough bitching time and that your talking points are stodgy and lack flair. I’ll be interviewing on line for your replacement… I will give you Emeritus status however, and a place on the Mud Room Wall of Doom..

  16. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 10, 2011 at 11:24 am

They’re not going to disregard finishing as well as possible and just play a bunch of over 25 “kids”. A reasonable LU one night might have Belt in left, Sanchez catching, and Crawford. Maybe it’s a lefty the next night and it’s Pill, Christian, and Gillaspie, giving Panda a break..
BTW, more crucial to the team’s WS run last year than ANY pitcher except perhaps Wilson, were Huff and Torres. Huff in particular deserves a ittle more respect than he’s received. He didn’t turn into a serial killer, he had a bad year. Criticism is certainly warranted, but not the animus from the Snarky crowd. He should always be a hero here, whatever happens with the rest of his career..

Put Decker up in place of Boch, he knows players, he’s had hundreds of games managed, he can pull a double switch as well as Boch. He’s the manager in waiting, so stop waiting. Wotus can stay as bench jockey, if he wants manager and will pout if he doesn’t get it, tough, he gone, been there long enough. Pitching coach? Rags can stay for continuity. Decker has some cred as a teacher and manager, and he’s younger. GM, I’ll think about, that’s more important…

I don’t know what you’re expecting. A manager can’t completely change a lineup while still in mathematical contention. That would give the appearance of throwing in the towel, and that is something that a manager in baseball, or headcoach in football or basketball just can’t do. Mariucci appeared to throw in the towel against Tampa Bay in that playoff game, and got fired after that season.

I’ve begun to realize that given the staggering number and severity of injuries (honestly, I cannot ever in 50+ years of following the Giants recall a season more riddled with serious injuries) and given the difficulty anyway of repeating and given the paltry offense — it’s amazing we’ve stayed even this close this long. Objectively speaking, it’s stunning we’ve done this well.

Last night, when Lincecum was struggling, I saw Stewart start to go out to the mound, then think better of it and just throw the ball to Tim. It got me to thinking how, given the ace level of our staff, the pitchers might not think much of the Posey replacements–‘just get back of the dish and put the glove up, son’–and those replacements know it. It’s all unspoken, but think of it, you don’t see the catcher’s imparting ‘wisdom’ to any of the starters, maybe a bit more to the relievers. Anyway, yet another consequence of this fractured season.

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on September 10, 2011 at 8:57 pm

Yeah, a fractured season literally and metaphorically. It just never had a chance. Torres and Ross injured before the season started, having to start with those 4 games in L.A., and so many games on the road in the first couple of months, and then Posey’s injury, and then the cascade of other players injured. It felt like the Giants had to play uphill all season.
