A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Winning the Wild Card, Finishing Ahead of the Dodgers and Alex Smith

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 12, 2011

Now that we are closer to winning the WC than we are to winning the division, let’s all turn our attention to some Braves score board watching.  Come on! Who’s with me! Hey, let’s go 14-2 the rest of the way and see what happens. 🙂

Do any of you really care if we finish ahead of the Dodgers? I mean, REALLY CARE. Are you scoreboard watching their games? Personally, I would like to see us stay ahead of them but I really don’t care much one way or the other…..

Alex Smith: I replied to Dennis’ post last night but only because he chose to take our discussion from Chuck’s New and Improved Blog to The Flap. But that will be THE END of the Alex Smith discussions here at my blog. I don’t mind some Niner talk and referencing Smith in that context, especially if the reference isn’t made the way a third grader or a serial killer would reference him. But if you have something ongoing to say about the Niners or the QB, say it over at Chuck’s blog. There’s a link to the right…..

OK….my question is, how much stock can you really put into player evaluation of the youngsters over the remaining games? Since SF (like rays and cards) are still in it until they aren’t, Pill Crawford Sanchez and even Belt are only going to get so many starts. Even if you assume worse case scenario and SF gets eliminated by end of Sunday the 18th, there would still be only 10 games left.
Burriss and Ford, we already know are not mlb quality hitters. I like Ford, but burriss is a jittery defender everywhere he has ever played, with zero pop and not a high OB. Even Font is a better option.
As to the others….Crawford remains below the mendoza line. If he stays there, what of it? Even if he hits a little over the last two weeks, is this guy starting SS material, esp on an offensively challenged unit like SF?
Pill is 4 for 14, couple bombs. He might get around 50 ABs, total, and Sanchez of course way less. I just don’t think you can really get much idea on these guys (maybe defensively) in such a limited time frame, esp if the games are vs. other teams just playing out the string. I realize the extent to which others in their spots (C, SS, 1b/OF) have under performed, but any results have to be taken with a grain of salt.
As an example, look at the A’s Brandon Allen. As soon as he came over from AZ he started to rake, with pop, and looked like a steal. Now he is 0 for his last 18, and 3 Ks in 3 ABs yesterday. The A’s (long out of any thoughts of contending) sat others to give him a look, and now have to be wondering if he is real deal or not.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 12, 2011 at 10:26 am

Allen had been considered the DBack’s top prospect- you don’t give up your top prospect for Ziggy Frigging Ziegler if you still value him as that.

    49ers – Ginn’s the tonic.
Giants – Go 14 – 2 like Flav says, and they could win the Division. WC or Division they would most likely get Philly and that’s what I want. I didn’t care much for Philly last year, this year I hate them and their cheese whiz samich AND would love nothing more than to send them home crying about SF being lucky. Again.

In fact, these are scenarios where I wish Nipper was in my corner:

      1. When I ask the boss for a raise, he could provide additional reasons why and/or echo my reasons.
      2. If I was President of the United States, he could take that bullet from the assassin.
      3. Again, if I was President, he could be the official food taster.
      4. Official rebuttal to the “Chucks and Snarkks” of the world.

I know if given additional time, I could think of more reasons why everyone should have a “My Man Friday” Nipper, but these are the ones that come to mind.

Well, for the Giants to even have a sniff at the division (or even WC), they need to make up 5-6 games in 10 days. Some shit like that. Frankly, I just want to see them get back to having a little fun. These grind-ass 2-1 losses (agony) are what is killing the mojo.

My daughters were doubly lucky yesterday. They picked yesterday to go, and they scored tix 8 rows behind home plate.

If we tie the Braves, do we get a one-game playoff or do they win some type of tie-break for winning the season series 6-1???…ouch

  17. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 12, 2011 at 2:40 pm

If the Braves go 6-9 (which seems a possibility, split 6 games at home between FL and NYM, lose road series in Florida and DC and then lose two of three at home against the Phillies), we then have to go 14-2 to tie, but we may not get that playoff game if there was a tie-break…

Those two loses in Atlanta where BWilson blew his last save, the extra-inning loss and the Lincecume 1-0 defeat killed us. If we had won 2 of those, we would be sitting just 3.5 out right now:( Would be an entire different season for us…

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on September 12, 2011 at 3:32 pm

A tie for that playoff spot would be a one-game playoff. The season record doesn’t matter at all in that situation. That’s only in the NFL.

It was a big win for the Niners. The division is obviously wide-open, and they took care of business yesterday. Dallas will be favored this week, but a case could be made that the Niners have a better chance of making the playoffs than Dallas.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 12, 2011 at 4:58 pm

Yes, the NFC West is weak sauce compared to the NFC East Philly and Wa could come out of there as the playoff teams. The Giants look lost and old. . . . The Rams took a bunch of injuries out of their loss to Philly. Az got torched for ~500 yards (400+ in the air from Fig Newton) by the Panthers. Seattle’s in rebuild mode as much as the Niners are. The Rams especially have a tough schedule early.

The Niners have the luxury of easing into their rough patch later in the season. It would behoove these bastards to 4-2 by the bye. They’ll have to beat Cincy, Tampax and Detroit. Philly and Dallas will be tough orders for these guys. TB and Detroit could be very tough as well. Detroit laid 430 (305 for Stafford) yards on a good TB defense.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 12, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Dallas? All the Niners have to do is hit Romo hard and early, and often. He gets skittish under pressure, and folds up under pressure. See last night . . .

Mr. DJ LOO is the man. Why? Well, you should already know the reasons. The list is long. But today in my mail I received a gift from Loo. It was a Will Clark Flipp Tipps things from the 80’s where you flip through the pages quickly and it shows you a scene of him hitting a bomb off Maddux in the playoffs (it was the Grand Slam, I jumped out our third story window in college at that exact moment). San Dawg, you would love this thing. There are 72 pages, it’s like watching an old school cartoon. On each page WIll the Thrill (or someone) has written a little blurb about what’s happening at that particular point in the swing or advice on hitting.
    Examples:
#2: Don’t imitate anyone else’s stance. Get comfortable at the plate and relax.
#23– players strides vary but should not be longer than the width of your stance
#38– ball is driven upward with a force of over 1400 pounds at impact (uh, Thrill didn’t write this, lol)
#59–don’t be a one field hitter, Learn to hit the ball where it’s pitched.
#71: “If you don’t want to come up with the bases loaded, you should hang it up”…
Ok, ok, not anything earth shattering but still a very good old school gift from my of my favorite old school bloggers. Thanks Loo…….

Maybe it’s been said, but remember how last year we were greatly helped by SD losing 10 in a row and the collapse of the Rox (whom I had feared more)? In other words, yeah, the Giants had to do their part, but we truly would’ve come up short without failure on the part of our foes. So here’s a toast to failure for the Dbacks, the Braves, Cards — anyone in our way. They’re only human, too. And in the meantime, we can have fun and merely win our own games.

I’m disappointed that Bochy has gone with 3 aaa pitchers in this gm. We’re still technically in this, it’s like he’s given up or something. Bush league managing to go with that trifecta tonight. It barely worked out. Please, no more Edelfsowhstever

Mota can’t go every night. And Surkamp hasn’t been lights out but they’re in a position to win every game he’s pitched. The alternative is now Zito. “Bush eague managing” is over the top.

surkamp–edelsfwhatnot—runzler. Sorry, but that’s not the lock down pitching staff we are known for. Every win keeps hope alive.

And they’re ahead. If you don’t pitch those two relievers early- you could end up with of ’em closing.

If it’s the WC, take it one team at a time. Thay can pull within 2 of St. Louis with a win tonight.

Flemming just said ‘Torres took a real chance or risk of getting thrown out’ (or close to that). Sounds reasonable. Then you think two things: one, there’s a very good chance they would never knock Torres in, and two, let’s reward the effort and hustle. Maybe Flemming’s brain-dead at this point, or just conventional wisdom.

Flemming said as much about the replay, that Flannery wasn’t windmilling but urging him on. I was just struck by the brainlessness of the comment. I mean, Torres with all he’s been through this year, isn’t go to make sure he’s going to score?

Excellent. Let’s reel off 6 of these bad boys and then see where we stand. It’ll take our collective mind off the horror of Alex Smith winning a football game. The Niners front office should start making their fans take an IQ test or something…

I can do what I want. 🙂 and my posts about him aren’t about threatening to murder him 24/7. it’s easy to skip over a random non baseball related post. It’s a little more difficult to bypass a death threat or something racist. I’m not putting up with that shit here.

After Crawford swung at a first pitch and grounded out, dropping him below .200, I checked his stats. He’s now got over 160 ABs. At some point, with no track record of success, it seems to me you try another approach. Like taking a walk.
