A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Aubrey Huff

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 25, 2012

I have only done some preliminary reading about Huff’s DL stint and the *anxiety disorder* that is being attributed as the cause of the DL move. Without getting into too many details, I have a fair amount of experience (as well as a Masters degree)  in the field of psychology. So I’ll preface this thread by saying that with almost no information about this case I still feel like I am in the ball park of being able to comment on it. And that’s what I’m gonna do……

One thing that I’ve been reading in the preliminary reports, especially from the bloggers, is that they are assuming Huff is suffering from *panic attacks*. This is not necessarily the case, it’s more of a presumption based on the the word *anxiety*. Though they can be treated with different cognitive techniques as well as medication, panic attacks can be crippling. But again, we don’t know that is what he’s dealing with. All that has been disclosed is that he has gone to the DL with something to do with *anxiety*.

And there are many different anxiety disorders that he could be diagnosed with. PTSD is an anxiety disorder, and it’s entirely possible that he has suffered from this for years. I don’t know the details of his father’s murder, but he wouldn’t have to necessarily witness the murder to suffer from this disorder. And it’s often impossible to tell what triggers an episode.

Believe it or not, OCD is also classified as an anxiety disorder. There’s nothing that remotely seems to connect Huff to OCD. I’m just saying, it falls under the anxiety classification….

Panic Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder are related but the symptoms are different………

And there is more, but you can google more info if you want it. My point with this thread is to not just automatically assume he’s having panic attacks just because you see the word *anxiety*. He could be having them, and it would render him almost incapacitated during such an episode. The aftermath of a panic attack (or multiple attacks) can be difficult to deal with, too. They can be like an earthquake— there’s *the big one* and then a bunch of after shocks afterwards. Regardless of whatever anxiety disorder he’s dealing with, at his age, I doubt it’s the first time he’s dealt with it. It’s my guess that he was diagnosed years ago and something has disrupted his medication treatment. It could be related to the past week or it could just be a problem that needs a med adjustment. Maybe he stopped taking them. Or maybe he was never on them at all. No one knows……

Over the last season and 3 weeks I’ve spent a lot of time being frustrated with Aubrey and his production at the plate and in the field. I’ve made fun of his name. I’ve criticized a possible smoking habit. I’ve questioned his conditioning. But today’s news was a critical reminder that I’m never better or worse than anyone else in this world. I was reminded today that it’s irresponsible for me to render judgement on a fellow man and his performance in baseball without knowing anything about the man personally. I never walked the earth in his shoes. No one has. And I will try to remind myself of that the next time I get frustrated with a baseball player’s performance……..

Humber is not even through 5 and he’s given up 9 earned runs>>why leave him out there so long? The kid throws a perfect game and then doesn’t get the hook when he needs it? ANYONE (except maybe Ventura) knows that a guy can often come off a no-no with lesser stuff. Maybe there’s a let down, maybe there’s a *bounce*, who knows. But he hasn’t been throwing with shit all game and Ventura is just sitting in the dugout chewing gum and watching all of this unfold. Weird.

I just got back from dinner with a friend and read what you posted Flav. Unfrickingbelievable that Ventura would leave him in there.

I’m curious about what Huff’s interactions with Burrell have been like ever since this came out. They go way back together and Im sure Bat has his back 100%, but its just interesting to me as those 2 guys seemed to be the teflon ones always busting everybody elses’s chops and now Aubrey is going through a tough time. Burrell strikes me as being a great friend to have when you want to get shitfaced and laid (or vice versa). Supporting you through mental issues? Not so sure about that one.

I will shy away from armchair shrink, since I have less than zero credentials in that area, but I do have some hard-learned credentials related to booze and I’ll go out on a limb and say getting shitfaced either a) caused this situation to worsen or b) may have had some causative factors, so c) yeah, Burrell will support his buddy, I’m sure, but let’s hope it is in the most constructive way.

Agree with you Pawlie . . . From experience, abusing alcohol will likely (exponentially) make things worse.

Burrell just needs to say “I got your back, dude,” and then get out of the way and let Huff’s psychiatrist take over. This is a medication issue. Almost all anxiety cases where the trigger or diagnosis is identified is a med issue. The main thing from his family/friends/crew is that Huff feel support from those he trusts and feels closest too.

I just tried to watch “Let it Ride.” It’s certainly no match for “The Girl Can’t Help It,” but its cheap feel and the point of reference somehow reminded me of one of one of my all time favorites “Patti Rocks.” There are many, many wonderful things about this “buddy” movie, (which is smarter than most of the Oscar nominated films of the last 30 years) including the still astonishing question “Have you been choppin’ my beef?” But one thing that really sticks is a scene where the cheating, simpatico, misogynist hero tearfully, proudly shows the photos of his two kids the morning after.

What do you mean you just *tried* to watch it, lol. Dude, you are chopping away at my core when you say that……

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 26, 2012 at 8:40 pm

and it’s possible that you just need to watch it 56 times like I’ve done. It starts getting really good after you’re 33rd viewing, lol

Richard Dreyfuss. . . . ugh . . . Alan Alda . . . . there are just some fucking terrible, awful actors whose presence ruin everything. Teri could not rescue this for me.

James, set aside your FanGraphs mentality and let “Let It Ride” seep into conscious. Over 20 yrs ago when I first heard the line, “God hates me” uttered from Richard Dreyfuss did I think to myself. You know what? He hates me too. Fuck him.

When, and only when, you’re able to go tell God to go fuck himself will you be able to open up your heart and allow this movie to become a part of your spirituality that makes you a better person, as it did with yours truly.

If your dad needs money, go ask
    Mickey Mantle. See what happens.

    Mickey Mantle don’t care about
    you. Why care about him?

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 26, 2012 at 8:41 pm

Dumb post. Did *you* ever give Mickey Mantle a reason to care about you? Give a ball player a reason to care about you and he just might start doing so……

“Credant Technologies, the trusted expert in data protection, today announced results of their fourth quarterly survey, this time looking at major league baseball venues across the US. With one-third of all venues reporting results, the numbers again corroborate the urgent need to protect sensitive personal and corporate information accessible on smartphones, tablets, USBs and laptops — more than seventeen hundred devices were left behind at ten baseball parks during the six month season.
Credant’s survey focused on Major League Baseball venues across the United States, including historic Wrigley Field and Busch Stadium and AT&T Park – home to the most recent World Series champions – the 2011 Cardinals and 2010 Giants. The results found most lost devices were recovered from seats and restrooms brought to lost and found areas and ultimately donated to charities if left unclaimed for more than 30 days.

The more than 1,700 lost mobile devices were as follows:
    — 97% smartphones and tablets
    — 2% USBs
    — 1% laptops”

My question – who in the hell forgets a laptop?

The kids and I watched “The Perfect Storm” this past weekend. Its a deeply flawed movie to be sure, and I wouldn’t even call it “good,” but my younger kids (12 and 14) got a huge kick out of it and it made me enjoy it quite a bit as well. Ever since, we’ve been quoting lines from the movie much to our amusement. My 14 year old son is particularly fond of the scene where Clooney screams “I always find the fish so don’t fuck with me!!!!”

that’s fuckin rad. Plus, I made a kick ass fish dish tonight so your post was topical too. Katie call’s it “Daddy’s Souffle”. I call it “Tilapia, butter, lemon, wine.” I don’t have a clue what a souffle is and don’t know where she heard of it but it flies in terms of a name…..

Nice! I was thinking of throwing down for some swordfish in honor of Perfect Storm the next time the kids are with me. At $17 a pound the portions will be limited.
Tomorrow my high school plays a game at Petco Park at 4:00. Each year, the Pads host 5 or 6 high school games at Petco. Can’t wait to see the knuckleheads I’ve been dealing with for 4 years running around on an MLB field.

Panda isn’t the only Giant carrying a hitting streak . . . The game winning blast was Pagan’s third in the last six games and he’s now carrying an 11-game hitting streak. With all of the shuffling in the Giants’ outfield, Pagan remains the primary leadoff hitter and center fielder for Bochy.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 26, 2012 at 10:59 pm

Hopefully he’ll keep it up. An 11 game hitting streak and he’s at .241 with an OBP of .277 is not good, sorry. I wouldn’t mention it but twice I’ve gotten this “are you warming up to him yet” routine. No, I haven’t. When his numbers are respectable, I’ll be tepid, when they’re good I’ll be warmed up to him. On defense, not turning in the opposite direction of where the ball is going will help too. I’m not warmed up to Carwford’s .212 either.. at a certain point good at bats have to translate into, like, you know: hits…
