A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Settling in for a 9 Game Homey And Many Reasons to Feel Positive

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 27, 2012

Pagan’s home run was huge, it was the difference between us coming home 10-9 and 9-10. And 10-9 just looks better. We face San Diego, Miami, and The Brewers for 3 a piece. There are plenty of positives to indicate the Giants are headed in a winning direction right now…..

To wit:

Pagan has quietly put together an 11 game hitting streak. He also hasn’t taken a walk in 9 games and that is a streak that needs to end. I’m looking forward to at least 3 triples from him during this homestand………

It looks like Belt has finally gotten another chance at 1st base and that’s a positive for all the fans who think he’s ready right now. We’ll see if he takes advantage of the opportunity. He’s 3 for his last 7 and though it was only 3 singles he’s nudged his OPS above .700 to .732. That number needs to climb if he’s going to hit in the middle of the line up. I’m not optimistic that he’s ready for a regular starting job but will be happy if he is. And the fact is, there’s really no one else to turn to with Huff on the DL and Brett Pill being the only other option……..

Barry Zito is showing a fairly stable degree of reliability although I’ve been wrong about every single one of his starts this year so maybe I should just stop making any positive comments about him. “I formally predict that the Marlins will destroy him next Wednesday to the tune of 6 earned runs in 2.2 innings. He’ll walk 4 strike out none.” There, that should do the trick…….

The Giants are hitting an even .200 as a team with RISP. I actually consider that a *backhanded* positive because I think that number has nowhere to go but up. They are a decent, legitimate hitting team this year, unlike last year. There really isn’t any at bat that comes up that I feel like is an automatic out. Crawford comes closest to that but as we’ve seen with our own eyeballs, Crawford has hit many balls hard that have found a glove or just missed being fair by inches. Having said that, I am glad to see Arias up. He hits better than Crawford and he will give the kid a blow which is what he needs right now. And unless Arias is significantly worse at defense than Crawford, our LU is stronger with him in it right now. Mr DJ Loo noted an interesting fact about Arias the other day: He was the PTBNL in the A-Rod/Soriano trade and he was also traded for Jeff Francour. He’s got skills, and with Crawford nursing a thumb and elbow injury and a scuffle at the plate I think Arias will be an excellent insertion into our LU over the coming days……

Burriss is showing everyone how far he’s come as a major leaguer (Marty Lurie, please make a note of that). As I’ve said for a while now, Glass Sanchez’ career is over and it’s nice to know we have a young, home grown player who is finally ready to shine. I’m happy for him, he seems like a great guy……

Pablo has cobbled together an 18 game hitting streak to start the season. Luebke will be a challenge for him tonight but he will be up for it. All this guy has to do is stay healthy and he will make a run at the NL MVP award this year….

Casilla’s lights out/curtains drawn appearance yesterday will hopefully give Bochy the confidence to go to him regardless of the *match ups* from here on out. The one neg right now is our bullpen–Lopez is all over the place, Affeldt seems to have turned into a jerk and Hensley might not be as good as everyone thinks he is. Casilla has been the rock. Getting the ball to him with the lead is going to be the real challenge……..

The weather is heating up, the boys are back in town, and I’m ready for a game, son…….

I don’t know if this is an omen or just a continuation of a banned joke. On the schedule today at Jazz Fest is the band Gomez (A band out of time and proud of it.). Don’t think I’ll see em but when I saw the listing, I cracked up for some reason.
Cheers Flap Nation, I’ll be drinking for the lot of you.

enjoy, payazo. Let me know who you guys see, who you like. Found a Pinetop Perkins CD at local lib from the 90s last week, really nice band. Used to hit up JJs Blues often to see guys like Chris Cain ($5 bucks at the door in those days) and a beautfiul bartender, but been quite a while.

Speaking of ready for games, I sure am. I met one of our Flappers last night . . . umm, sort of. I spoke with snarkk on the phone. For whatever reason, I pictured this street smart New Yorker that gave Twin as much as he received (I mean that in a good way regarding them both). First off, the voice isn’t crusty like I pictured it . . . Actually, he has a voice that is very erudite and youthful sounding. I wont reveal his name, because I think he wants it to remain “snarkk” in public (LOL). No, the law isn’t after him. Anywho, apparently he got a 24 hour release from Mrs. Snarkk and the Snarkettes and we’ll be going to the May 2nd game . . . Looking forward to meeting him. 🙂

Flav: Thank you for pointing out my fine baseball contribution from the other day.

I loved Gomez Addams as well, particularly the electric train crashing. John Astin had a small but memorable role in West Side Story. He briefly had the Jets & Sharks playing nice at the dance, but sadly was unable to sustain it. I’d take the 1961 Rita Moreno over any of these present day Hollywood skanks.

Two things jump out. One, filling the hole in the lineup hitting behind Buster and two, the 7th inning spot vacated by Ramirez/Casilla. Belt and Hensley need to step up.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 27, 2012 at 7:42 am

I think Belt has the goods to be the 5-hole hitter…he just needs to do it consistently. If he keeps getting playing time and is successful…the confindence will help in that regards. Bochy just needs to give him a really long leash and let him prove that he either is or isn’t up to the job. Jerking the kid around will only ruin any possibility for success.

As much as I dig Crawford, I won’t be surprised to see Arias get plenty of playing time there (and also some starts at 2nd). He brings a better stick to the game, and believe it or not, actually has as good (if not better) range than BC.

Weatherproof game: Mariners at Blue Jays and Diamondbacks at Marlins. There are potential thunderstorms in St. Louis (62 degrees) and in Atlanta (83 degrees). Apart from that, we’ve got nothing much to worry about for Friday. Expect temperatures in the 50s for Cleveland, New York, Chicago and Minnesota. Breezy conditions and low 60s are on tap for Philadelphia, Baltimore and Cincinnati. It should be 70 with some sun for Denver, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Texas brings the heat with temperatures just a hair shy of 90.

I’m not as geeked about Arias as everyone else. He had one nice game ( that I believe included an error). Lets not hand him the starting gig already. Crawdad has had a hit in each of his last 4 games and his defense has settled down after a rocky start with several nice plays mixed in. Doesn’t seem to me to be a good time to put the thought in his head that he needs to produce or get sent to Fresburg. I for one hope that he still gets the lion’s share of starts at SS —-though I did dig Loo’s funfact that Arias was the player to be named in the A-Rod deal and traded straight up for Frenchy Francouer. I totally agree with Flav re Freddie. Respect his career and love the contributions he has made in SF, but most of the time I forget he is still on the team. I like the energy Crawford and Burriss bring to middle infield and hope they get 120+ starts each this year.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 27, 2012 at 8:15 am

I’m with you San…I too want to see Burriss and Crawford get the lion’s share of the starts. And Arias has had about 5 times as many starts at 2B as opposed to SS.

11 years in the minors? You talking about Arias? Nope. He has played three years in the minors and “parts of” five years there (split with a big club). I’m glad we have him…sure as hell more exciting to think about him in there as opposed to Ryan the Riot.

“he’s nudged his OPS above .700 to .732. That number needs to climb if he’s going to hit in the middle of the line up” It’s climbing now. And he’ll get his extra base hits.

The problems in the LU are the horrid OBP for the lead off hitter, and Crawford’s numbers, period. And let’s hope Nate isn’t going feet up as he always seems to do when given a chance. Or maybe Bochy needs to stop awarding him the RF job, he flops everytime Bruce gives it to him.

Twin – I don’t think that Crawford is not in there principally to hit. If he can hit .240 or .250 and play stellar D…I’ll take it (and I think the team will too). Sure, he isn’t there yet, but it’s not like he looks lost at the plate, either (last 7 days he is 5 of 17)…so I think he is moving in the right direction. Also, he has been hitting the ball hard…just unfortunately many of those are not finding holes.

Heading back to the bay 10-9 sounds great to me too.

It is still early but I think they are missing that Uribe type presence. That one big hit to pull them together. Maybe Pagan provided it yesterday, maybe Cabrera is that silent assasin they missed last year. I like that this club has so many hungry players. One guy with an 11 game streak another with 19 and they’re still searching a bit, trying to put together solid play all around. Once that happens, look out.

I think this 15 days is going to be huge for Belt. He has to prove he is the guy. So that even when/if Huff comes back Bochy won’t be so inclined to put Huff back in.

“Hard to get too geeked about a guy with 11 years in the minors.” So you were out of town in 2010? Torres was the team MVP (according to me, Fangraphs, BP)..a lot of that was based on his GG level defense, which seems only to count if the player is Crawford.

depth is nice (compared to last year) but i’d prefer more quality than quantity. I’d like pagan more if he got on base and ran successfully; as to his d, he seems like a guy who could win you a game or lose you one. Nate could be on another of his famous 4-40s, and doesn’t belong as #5 hitter; belt might be better there and certainly more patient.
If Arias can hit better than crawford and play decent D, then no reason he shouldn’t be in there. I also think long run burriss will have more productive career here than C. He runs better and will get on base more often, and is so far playing very capable 2b.
Disappointing to hear Panik and Brown are off to such poor starts–hope they can pick it up and improve the quality of what we have at mlb level.
On pav blog are daily attempts by many bloggers to show bochy what his LU should be, and one guy actually blamed mgr. for the team not scoring runs. Whoever is in there, it’s their job to hit and do what they can to help the team win—they are the guys with a bat in their hands.
I had a baseball book as a kid that had funny quotations in it from old guys. One conderned the ump bill klem: he calls a strike on a batter who tells him “You missed that one bl=bill. Dlem replies, “Maybe, but I had your bat Iwouldn’t have.

It’s *what are they doing to help the team win NOW*— Yesterday alone, Pagan’s contribution directly caused a 2 game swing in their overall record. Vungo better get going…..

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 27, 2012 at 9:57 am

That indeed was a huge hit, moving him to about 60 points less in OBP than what’s acceptable for a lead off hitter. At .241 with that .277 OBP, and less than average defense, the team would have benefitted more if *he* were on the DL. BTW, Baseball Reference lists his nickname as :”Crazy Horse”. Where did that come from? Now that’s the kind of question for Loo.

Melky’s decent OBP might prompt Bochy to try him at lead-off at some point, which is something he talked about during the spring. Also, if Pagan is producing but not as a lead-off hitter should — the occasional home run or triple instead of just getting on base more — I wouldn’t be surprised to see him moved down in the batting order and try someone else at the top, like Burriss, now and then. I’m not down on Pagan, I still think he will contribute, maybe he’s warming up… producing in any way like last night is great. But yeah, clearly needs to get on base more at lead-off, or it might soon be time to try someone else there.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 27, 2012 at 10:36 am

Pagan needs to show more patience at the plate if he is going to be at the top of the line-up. Last 14 days his OBP has crept over .300 (.333), but only 2 BB in 52 AB. For the year he has 4 BB in 79 ABs…ain’t gonna cut it as a lead-off. Burriss is only slightly better at OBP, and has only 4 BB for the year, too.

Cabrera is at .375 for the year (OBP) with 10 BB. He’s also hitting .295…I wouldn’t mind seeing him get a shot at the top for a while…WTF…can’t be much worse than what we have seen to date.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 27, 2012 at 10:53 am

I think you mean that Pagan’s OBP has been .333 the last 14 days, not that’s reached that level. His OBP is an absymal .277 even after those 14 days. Manny’s OBP for the YEAR is .333, not slightly better but worlds better. But I have posted that Pagan deserves more time…he does have some track record of success leading off-.335 OBP as the lead off hitter.

  23. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 27, 2012 at 10:55 am

Pagan has probably suffered a little bit from trying to do too much. He’s in a contract year, he wants to impress his teammates and his fans—it’s hard to impress the casual fan with some walks.
But his OBP in 08 was .346, ’09 it was .350 and in ’10 it was .340. I’m throwing out last year because he quit on a dysfunctional team (but it was .322 if you were wondering). This year it’s .277 and that, to me, is an indication of the above. I’m betting his OBP starts to climb soon.
Bottom line: he’s on the field, he’s made some nice plays in the OF (to go along with some bad ones) and he’s contributing to wins. Yesterday’s bomb was probably the biggest swing of the year so far……

  24. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 27, 2012 at 11:01 am

I’ve repeatedly posted that he needed more time, Chuckles. But coming off a sub par season they have more validity.
Plus he’s over 80 plate appearances, that’s not the same as, say, Belt with 38. I probably wouldn’t mention Pagan’s numbers yet if his apologists didn’t act as if he was doing well.

  25. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 27, 2012 at 11:06 am

Twin, why do you think Vungo’s “leg problems might doom his career?” He’s just had a couple of strains over the last year, no breaks or surgeries or anything. Nothing that would be career threatening.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 27, 2012 at 11:15 am

He was on the DL twice last year, missed a lot of ST this year, came back twice this spring and reinjured himself both times. I don’t frigging HOPE this is career threatening. I have no idea why you would minimize this.

  29. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 27, 2012 at 12:33 pm

I would not be surprised if the Giants put Huff onto a 60 day DL, assuming that he can be put on that with an anxiety diagnosis. Others on other squads have been gone a long time for that diagnosis, so I don’t see why not. That would give the Belt/Pill/Posey experiment a good stint to settle itself and allow Arias to stay up and also settle into a very “regular” IF utility role. With Hector showing he can hit, there is reduced reason to put Posey behind the plate too much, especially if Belt/Pill don’t step up during that period. As for the pitchers, if they have a problem with Hector, just get used to him, look him off if you need to, then shut up and pitch. Arias can probably take 3rd, too, to give Panda a blow once in a while after his streak ends. I don’t see any other good candidate to take 3rd in case Panda got hurt — Theriot and Pill don’t seem like particularly great options. I’m assuming Franchez is not coming back, until he actually plays a handful of games at AAA and handles regular throws and DP cross-body throws without a daily “setback”. Unlike others, I’ve always been in this guy’s corner. I don’t think a guy with his history of success and bona fides is faking shoulder rehab issues. That was a major injury, and major surgery to fix it, with no guarantees. He would have incentive to do well this year since it’s a contract year, so I highly doubt he’s just picking up a check and doesn’t want to come back. If he’s only 70% or whatever the percentage is, he shouldn’t come back. We need guys at 100%….

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on April 27, 2012 at 12:43 pm

I would like to see Sanchez make it back. He would fit well in the LU anywhere from 5-7 and help solidify it. I did see Bochy make a comment earlier this week at Baggs site that he may just serve as a PH if nothing else.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 27, 2012 at 1:35 pm

I too would like to see Sanchez make it back. And I agree…I don’t think he is dogging it. I think he genuinely wants to make it back and to contribute.

Arias has played all of 2 games at 3B in his career. Theriot has more starts there (9) than Arias. Burriss has had 2 starts there, too. They obviously do not have a long-term option if something happened to Pablo. My guess is that they would maybe bring up Gillaspie in that situation.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 27, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Good info guys on the other options that have limited 3rd base experience. I guess Gillaspie would be a logical choice as you indicate, and a quick look showed me he’s hitting in Fresno, but he’s really not distinguished himself consistently at the plate in the minors. Plus, he’s a LH batter, and they’ve got an oversupply of lefties. The best is to hope Panda doesn’t hit the DL for any reason…

  30. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 27, 2012 at 12:52 pm

If Panda was hurt, I’m sure Gillaspie would come up. As to Arias, neither middle infielder’s job is safe. They’re going to have to hit-in Burriss’ case, continue to hit…
Sanchez isn’t faking anything, but he’s shown he’s just not eager to play after injury. I’ll remind once again that Bochy had to finally give him a deadline to report in 2010.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on April 27, 2012 at 1:36 pm

Did not see your comment on Gillaspie, Twin…I agree…if a long-term option was required (injury to Pablo)…it would probably be Connor.
