A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

More Defense Please

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 28, 2012

Carl Steward at the The Merc already blogged about this last night but I thought we could kick it around here, too. Last night, Bochy went “all offense” with his LU. The flip side of that is that you really expose your defense.

Cabrera in RF: worse (I know he gunned down someone at third and he didn’t do anything egregious out there, I’m just saying, if he’s playing RF he’s *worse* than Nate)

Arias at SS: worse than Crawford

Theriot at 2nd: worse than Burriss (from a range standpoint)

Pill in LF: definitely worse than Cabrera

Posey at 1st: worse than Belt

Hector at C: worse than Posey

Pagan in CF: worse (than Blanco)

That’s 7 positions where you weaken your defense. And Steward is correct, with Hacker on the mound, you are going to get a LOT of balls put in play. You’re just asking for trouble when 7 of your 8 positions are weaker defensively than the replacement player.

How much are you really strengthening your offense with that LU? Is it really THAT much more?

Cabrera > Nate? Yes.

Arias > Crawford? Definitely yes

Theriot > Burriss? No. I’d rather have Burriss in there for his offense (and his defense, frankly)

Pill >Cabrera? No

Posey > Belt? If  Belt ever starts producing the way everyone here says he’s about to start doing then I would go with *no* on this one. Posey puts up great numbers for a C but as a 1B his offensive numbers are average at best.

Hector > Posey? No

Pagan > Blanco? Yes

There are just not enough resounding *yeses!* on that list to justify putting such a significantly substandard defense on the field together. And I’m not talking about what that defensive alignment would do game-to-game or what they did last night. I’m talking about what it would do over the course of time. And the end result, I think, would be a defensive unit that would make a lot of errors. And that’s not even counting the errors they don’t make because they don’t have the range to get to the ball that the *other* guys would have gotten to. In other words, there will be balls hit to LF that Pill doesn’t get an error on but he also doesn’t make a play on because he can’t get to the ball in time. Same with Theriot. And all of them, actually.

This is your best *all-defense* LU:

Blanco CF

Cabrera: LF

Panda: 3rd

Posey: C

Nate: RF

Belt: 1B

Crawford: SS

Burriss: 2B

And I’m not saying go with this LU every game. Just mix some of it in instead of going with the *all offense* LU Bochy went with last night. The offense those guys will produce just isn’t that much more than their replacement player would produce and it certainly isn’t enough to make up for the defensive gap that is created when they have to stop hitting and go play the field…….

Weatherproof games: Mariners at Blue Jays and Diamondbacks at Marlins. Saturday will be wet in some places, with periods of rain in Cleveland, Minnesota and Chicago, all tapering off as the day progresses, yielding drier Sunday action. Thunderstorms are possible Saturday in St. Louis and Cincinnati, with some of that precipitation perhaps lingering into Sunday. Chances of afternoon showers in Baltimore and Philadelphia that should peter out by the time games begin Sunday. Colorado will see temperatures in the 60s and clouds that may end up with a Sunday thunderstorm. Elsewhere, expect sunny skies in California, Atlanta, Texas and New York for the majority of the weekend.

outstanding! I took Miggy Cabrera and Pablo for my *beat the streak* players today. I usually stay away from players on the east coast since a rain out wipes me. My current streak is just at 4 but a lot of the guys on top fell off yesterday (several guys had 34-35 game hit streaks going and now the top one is 28. I am going to win this contest this year. Book it.

Analogy . . . Sometimes, you have to play “defense” in the stock market. Depends on the situation, e.g., current Euro zone weakness, especially with the PIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Greece and Spain) economies tanking. You want to be in dividend yielding stocks, preferably those which can weather the storm and are more or less bullet proof (McDonalds, Coca Cola, Costco, etc.). Same thing could be said for baseball . . . Our stadium for example is one where you try to have “fleet of foot” outfielders, especially to address the gaps. Conversely, in band boxes, you can get away with the “statue” type players a bit more.

You do have nine fielders tho, and affeldt gave the baserunner a big jump at 2b, and then threw a horseshit WP that allowed a big run to come in. sure nate’s a good RF, but he’s in another oh fer right now. I’d like to see more of blanco, and less of theriot too.
The pads really aren’t very good, but we should have scored more off Luebke, and other than Posey HR nothing off their pen. If I was seeing right, street didn’t throw anything harder than 87-89 all inning and we’ve smacked annoying gregersen around before. agree with paul this is a team you smoke when you’re at home.

Agree that last night’s lineup might not have had all of the players in their best positions, but I don’t think that’s the problem. Any lineup with Theriot in it isn’t “going all offense”, nor is scoring just 3 runs. As the Chron points out, last night they were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and are 18-for-109 in RISP situations in the past 12 games. That’s the problem right now. Need to find the right match in the batting order so that good RBI guys are following good on-base guys, get the hitters doing the jobs they’re supposed to be doing in the right situations. I’m a stats idiot, any of you who are more stats savvy than me wanna warm up the blogticulator and propose a different and better batting order? Otherwise, the hitters just need to start doing their jobs with RISP. An “all offense” lineup that capitalizes on RISP situations and scores 5 or more runs can afford to sacrifice some defense… but I don’t think they’ll have to. I still think this team will hit better in those situations. Soon, please.

pagan….is tough to watch sometimes. He took a bad angle on that hit that could have easily been an error, and made a bad play on the bases with pablo up there to get caught. He’s not a kid on the bases, and played at Citi in a big yard. These aren’t physical errors, they are mental ones. He’s doing some things with the bat, but hitting the ball in the air a lot at ATT at night isn’t a good idea.
I think James is right—posey/belt gives you more than sanchez/posey, and I’d include D there as well. Belt does OK vs. LHP, and I hope bochy leaves him there more often.

Willie – Three words, Slavic Soul Party. They kicked some serious dupa. Flaco and the Texas Tornados also kicked ass. Beausoleil, James Andrews, James Rivers and The Electrifying Crown Seekers were all good. Chuck Leavell with Bonnie Bramblett were OK, Bonnie only sang on one song (she still has pipes though). I was a no show for the Irma Thomas tribute to Mahalia Jackson (I’ve seen it a few times) because of the Slavic Soul Party. They are from NY and are like a Brass band on speed, very entertaining.

Go Giants, kick the Pad’s DUPA.

Agree with the angle he took to get to the ball, but that wasn’t a mental gaff with regard to his steal attempt of 3rd, i.e., the pitcher was already thinking steal attempt on that pitch and had him dead in his tracks. You’re upset because we would have had a run on Pablo’s subsequent base hit. You can’t have it both ways – I want steals . . . oh, but wait, when Pablo’s up, keep your ass on the bag and be a “station to station” guy like the stiffs we had last year.

By the by, with regard to his fielding, Pagan has always been a plus fielder, with the exception last year. I don’t like how he is fielding thus far either, but consider this – he is acclimatizing to one of the most difficult places to play at the Phone Park. I am willing to give him a chance to improve . . . Sheesh, it’s the first 3 weeks of the season. Tell me this – who do you want in there? Blanco? Huff? Or, bring back Torres? Give me a break.

the cs wasn’t a good play blade–he went on first move, which is a gamble. Why try and steal third with pablo up there or when you are on second? A hit scores him. If he was on first, different story. Bottom line he ran us out of an inning with the heart of the order coming up. That’s not what I want to see out of a vet. There is a downside to trying to steal bases when you get caught–in that instance i didn’t like it. You’re telling me you did?

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 28, 2012 at 9:31 am

Not going to go back and forth on it willieD. Obviously, I didn’t like the result, but I will ALWAYS side with Bochy, who has given the green light to Pagan. Bochy knows what he is doing vs. any of us fans . . . He has the most experience handling base stealers in the entire MLB – check out who he had in San Diego and what they accomplished. I posted on his Bochy’s record a few weeks ago with stats, etc..

  6. St's avatar St said, on April 28, 2012 at 8:40 am

I thought it was a good and useful experiment, even if it didn’t yield great results. Bochy tries different things and if they don’t work, he discards them. We’ll see Sunday if he comes back with another version of an all Rhh lineup.
It’s beneficial to give the bench guys ab’s and playing time to keep em sharp, as well as to see how they can handle different positions. If Pill can handle LF, they have some added flexibility there against LHP.

Might have left Belt in there, but against a lefty, it was also a good night to give Pill and Hector some playing time and give Buster a squat free night while keeping his bat in there.

The 3 main changes I would like to see immediately are the following:
    1) Burriss at 2nd all the time
    2) Pill never starting
    3) Belt at first base, Posey catching and not playing first base
I’m not getting into my Belt feelings again, I’ve already made them known. But with the current options available, I would rather see Belt and 1st and Posey catching then Sanchez catching and Posey at first base (or Pill). Belt gives you GG defense every game and at some point he will start hitting the way you expect a 1B to hit. I hope it’s soon.
As long as Burriss is at 2B I don’t really care how much time Crawford or Arias get at SS.

Belt obviously *is* starting to hit- .364 last 2 weeks, .440 OBP .940 OPS. That’s in 22 AB. If those first 10 AB can be such a BFD, double the sample should be as well. The HR’s will come, no one argues that. Willie mentions LHers-he’s .347 in 47 AB, .928 OPS, last year and this. It’s time to put to bed the digs..
Geez, no sooner do I warm up to our Angel in the OF, he goes all Velez on us…it’s easy to see why Alderson was so eager to dump him..
As I’ve said before, they need to scrap the Posey at first base idea, when he needs a rest, sit him. I’ll talk about the rest of the LU later.

This will be a very interesting game today. Why? Both Lincecum and Bass are rated a 10 by ESPN with regard to them starting today (highest rating). I understand Lincecum, but Bass being rated that high is more due to Bass having allowed only three hits and one unearned run last Saturday against the Phillies. He also struck out seven and walked three. He has 19 SOs in 19 innings pitched thus far this year, but his lack of control is something the Giants can take advantage of if they are patient at the plate. Something they didn’t do last night. I am looking for a pitcher’s duel today.

I guess the take on Pagan’s defense last year was that it wasn’t his fault, his dysfunctional “family” made him do it. This whole dysfunctional excuse is funny- Angel was a big part of WHY they were that. As long as he’s hitting, his bonehead plays and subpar are going to be tolerated. I supect his overall play has Bochy seething, though.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 28, 2012 at 9:25 am

seething? What a joke. If ever you’ve applied your own feelings to something, that was it. If Bochy was *seething* you’d see Blanco get mnore starts. Everything has pointed to Pagan being great in the clubhouse. And it’s impossible to deny his contributions to team wins this year.I know you *want* to see him act like he did last year so it will support your bogus fantasy that we shouldn’t have traded Torres for Pagan. There isn’t a single person in the world who is lamenting that trade except you…..

Anyone have an opinion on Bobby Abreu? Can he still help a major league team, such as the Giants?
I suspect that the Red Sox may take a flyer on him, what with their Crawford problems, etc.

Abreu is a lifetime .293 hitter, with 2,389 hits, 557 doubles, 284 home runs, 1,330 RBIs and 393 stolen bases. He previously played for Houston, Philadelphia and the New York Yankees. While he failed to reach double-digit homers for the first time last year since 1997, he still got on base at a .353 clip and collected 60 RBI while seeing action in 142 games.

Personally, I am happy he has been released from the Angels, because both my FL teams anticipated this happening and I picked up their phenom, Mike Trout.

Absolutely fucking no one (lqtm) . . . I didn’t mention his fielding, but it has been atrocious the last couple of years and the Phone Park would eat him up. An AL team would be the likely replacement (e.g., Red Sox for NY revenge factor, band box dimensions, and DH). Personally though, I think he is through and NO ONE will give him an opportunity. Bochy is still trying to figure out where all the pieces fit, if they do fit, on this team. He’ll need another 20 games to do that. The defense should improve once the players get more comfortable knowing what to expect and when they are going to play. The thing that is troubling is the Pen, it is looking shaky. After several years of being nails on a team with an anemic offense, this might not be a temporary blip. We should expect a dip in Pen performance this season, especially with Wilson out now. The jury is still way out on the closer situation, regardless of Casilla’s dominating one performance in Cincy…

  24. James's avatar James said, on April 28, 2012 at 1:16 pm

If the pen slips a lot overall, that is a much bigger deal than who the closer is. The closer will only throw ~15% of the total bullpen innings. You can lose a lot more games in the 6th-8th innings than in the ninth. That’s simple logic, common sense etc. To put it another way, you are better off having really good middle inning, lefty righty specialists, and set up guys and a shitty “closer” than the other way around.

Well, the bullpen ERA of 3.88 is inflated largely because of the 17 run game…it would be a huge stretch for even the most fervent imagination to attribute that to Wilson’s absence. It’s just too early for a game like that to be absorbed. As far as Wilson, it’s unlikely to ever be known how much he’s missed because it’s impossible to know what they’re missing. There is no way to presume we would have getting the elite closer of 2010. Plus, of course, those who think it’s a BFD will attribute every close loss to his absence. Anyone honestly looking for what must

improve has to note the defense and Lincecum. And it wouldn’t hurt to get more offense from our middle infielders. Manny has been the best but he has ZERO extra base hits.

Well, last night he was trying to get all RH bats against Luebke. 5 switch hitters (counting Hacker) and 4 RHers.

  30. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 28, 2012 at 5:22 pm

I’m not trying to start a shit-storm at the blog before the game even starts but I just saw this: Belt has 3 RBI’s this year (in 33 at bats). And 2 of those were on that bullshit popup that fell behind the Met center fielder. I’m sorry, but 1 RBI (and that’s all I’m giving him credit for) is fucking bullshit from a guy who is supposed to be driving in runs. Fuck, in twice as many at bats Crawford has 8 RBI’s from the fucking bottom of the LU…..
Really, I’m just venting. Not trying to fight. Plus, I’m home watching this game tonight so I’ll be on the blog a fair amount–I’m sure there’ll be plenty to discuss as the evening wears on 🙂

  31. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 28, 2012 at 5:36 pm

Whatever. If you want to make 33 AB a decent sample, go for it, as ridiculous as that is. And please let me know when you’ve finished doing your adjusted stats on the rest of the guys.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 28, 2012 at 5:43 pm

As I posted the other day, I’m not critical but envious that you’ve positioned your yourself to be right about Belt no matter how he fares. And this will be my final post about Belt tonight. As you said, there will be plenty of stuff to discuss.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 28, 2012 at 5:49 pm

totally false statement about me *being right either way*. Why can’t I acknowledge that he’s a fantastic prospect while at the same time understanding why Bochy is sitting him? (or WAS sitting him, he should get some playing time now because there’s no one else to play).
I could see Belt having a very nice major league career. I just supported Bochy’s decision to try to “win games over developing hitters.” If I saw more positive body language from Belt after his many, many failures at the plate, I’d probably feel like it was a good idea to ride him through this rough patch and hope he comes out of it at some point. But I’m not seeing much that is indicating he’s coming out of it. Singles are nice, a double here and there is, too.
But 1 RBI in 33 at bats from a run producing spot in the LU (or as a PH with men on base) is a joke and you KNOW it. If this were PaGONE you’d be positively *seething*…..

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 28, 2012 at 5:44 pm

I have just given Pagan 7 more steals, he’s up to 9. If he wants to come within hailing distance of 50 steals he needed me to bump him up—just a little kick start to give my *guy* a running head start. 🙂

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 28, 2012 at 5:55 pm

Actually, I’ve deducted the fielding and base running “mishaps” of Caballo Loco: and I’ve abritarily decided that Pagan has 0 steals and 0 RBI. PaGONE! is what they yelled when he left NY..

In other bessball news: Bryce Harper starting tonight against the Dodgers. His MLB callup debut, if I read correctly. Worth the hype? Worth buying stock in eye black mfg’s?

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 28, 2012 at 6:03 pm

Well, it’ll be interesting theatre for sure. Will he dress up in all his eye black in a major league game? He’s probably not ready but he will produce at some point— hey, that’s the same thing way I feel about Belt! Go figger…

      • mrmrbill's avatar mrmrbill said, on April 28, 2012 at 6:34 pm

heh, agreed on the theatre. I was mostly kidding about the eye black … doesn’t formal MLB have a ruling on amount allowed? Would be interesting to know. I mean, remember the shit BW got about orange shoes being “too distracting” so he had to mark them out w/ a Sharpie?

Good games tonight! Go ‘Nats (vs. Dodgers) ….

Larry Evans was on KNBR before the game, and said some of the errors are the guys trying to do too much, like that one. Trying to get a double-play that isn’t there. They’ve done that a few times this season.

There are many different ways to get 2 rbi’s on a hit—you could can-o-corn the ball the way Belt did in NY and get lucky or you could take a couple of pitches and then blast one the other way. I’ll take either, but hope tonight’s hit is a sign of things to come from him…..
