Brandon Crawford
He scored 2 runs last night (who didn’t?) and he had a couple of RBI knocks. It’s impossible to deny he’s hitting better in the 2nd spot. It’s unlikely he keeps that up since most people think he’s not up here for his bat. But his bat has been unexpectedly productive in moments this year, while his glove has been unexpectedly bad. Some people have defaulted to the obvious, which is that his struggles at the plate have contributed to his struggles in the field. I don’t really buy that. There was no pressure on him to hit at this level and he knew that going into the season–just take care of left side of the infield and he’d be all good.
Kuiper, a former infielder, said his problems stem from the fact that he’s taking a step back on too many balls to ensure a better hop. Kuiper went on to say that when in doubt an infielder should always be aggressive and charge the ball. Not having played infield for a major league team before, I’ll defer to Kuiper that this approach is the best and would hope that Wotus would pass along this nugget to young Brandon.
But another theory for Crawford’s bad defense this year crossed my mind as I watched the game yesterday: maybe he’s just not that good defensively. There was a play in the middle of the game where someone hit a ball up the middle, Crawford went to his left and dove for it and it clanged off his glove into center field. I watched the replay a few times and noticed that this was a *reaction* play so it’s not like he had too much time to think about it or that he took a step back or anything like that. He just kicked the play. We’ve been sold the line that Crawford is a very good/elite shortstop defensively. But any elite shortstop that I’ve ever seen makes those diving plays to their left almost look routine. Whether they make the play or not, you’re never surprised when they dive and come up with it because that’s just what an elite shortstop does. They make those plays. And if you watch that replay, Crawford doesn’t really even come close to making it. The dive is awkward and he really barely even got his glove on the ball despite being there to make the play.
So all I’m saying is, maybe we should ratchet down our expectations for him defensively. And if we do that, what are we left with? Brian Bocock?
Weatherproof games: Giants at Marlins, Brewers at Diamondbacks, Angels at Mariners.
Thunderstorms are in the forecast Friday for Pittsburgh, Boston, Baltimore and New York. Chicago is expected to have cloudy skies and 76-degree weather, with similar mercury readings forecasted in Minnesota. Temperatures in the 85-90 range will be seen in Cincinnati, Atlanta, Texas and St. Louis. Los Angeles and Oakland will be a bit cooler, with temperatures in the mid-60s, and there’s a chance for showers in the Bay Area.
This is an interesting take on Timmy from Scott Pianowski, Yahoo FL writer (Flav is familiar with him, probably not too many of you are). FL guys are saber geeks, so if you are in love with Timmy, nothing here will convince you otherwise:
“There’s never going to be a consensus on Tim Lincecum this year. Let’s accept that. Maybe a 2.4 mph drop in his velocity means nothing to you, perhaps you don’t care that he’s throwing his slider less, maybe you can live with the spotty command, figuring he’ll get it back sooner or later. Here are some of the things I don’t like:
Just one quality start – hard to win if you can’t go deep and keep the runs down; a recurring walk problem, which has his K/BB rate barely over two (you expected and need much better); very messy numbers on the road (8.15 ERA, 2.04 WHIP). Lincecum’s BABIP has been unlucky at .351, sure, but he’s also rolling with a 5.1 HR/FB, which might be good fortune. And opponents are squaring the ball up against Linecum like never before, rocking a 24.3 line drive rate. When you’re lacking your best velocity and missing your spots, line drives happen.
I see more fleas and red ink than I’m willing to absorb. Unless the price is dirt cheap, I don’t want him. What’s the best pitcher you’d trade for Lincecum right now, 1-for-1?”
from a fantasy standpoint? I’d probably trade him for Zito and one.
Flav, when you get a chance, read this . . . Darvish comments.
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/pitching-by-the-numbers–rules-of-k-bb-ratio-.html
arias. get someone to play 2b and bat 8th like crawford would, and wait on a prospect kid for another year. Or get one for nate, maybe. Crawford tries to make a play that bugs me, his backhand stab from his knees of a hot smash into the hole, that never works. It’s a tough play sure, but he never comes up with it. I saw him do the same thing on a steal play where posey threw the ball on the SS side of the bag—craw ole-ed it and the ball went into CF and the runner got to 3b.
I just think arias has a better arm and would make fewer mistakes on the routine stuff, and save baserunners and pitches. And no more late game bombs from guys like braun that shouldn’t have come to the plate.
I agree with you except if you list off *worst positions* in our infield, at least in terms of production, the list starts and ends with 2nd base. When Pablo comes back Arias will slide to 2nd and Crawford *probably* keeps on playing at SS. If he keeps hitting the way he’s been hitting since he rolled into the 2 spot maybe he keeps the SS job because of his bat! Ha, chew on THAT one!
arias is the answer to flav’s ? about what are we left with…i have no idea about lincecum and who is he equal right now. Vogs got the big out when he needed it…TL seems incapable of same these days.
Wild night in the NL last night–usually total runs scored for 8 games is mid-60s, last night 65 in 4 games. Pads score 11, phils/cards was 10-9. Reds and braves hit 4 more bombs in 6-3 reds sweep–16 HRs hit by both teams combined in 4 games at reds launching pad. And of course SF gets 14 runs without an HR and overcomes nemesis sanchez and the loudest whack of the night from Stanton. Not to mention 8 HRs in chisox/twins.
Should have been 9 HRs in that ChiSox/Twins game . . . De Aza was robbed on one of his.
If memory serves Buriss was considered a stellar defender when he came up too…Yet he’s turned out to be a medicore at best infielder….Much like their offensive abilities, maybe the Giants over hype their position player talent alltogether?
And yet I’ve seen him also make some highlight reel kind of plays.
I think the thing about both the Brandons is just the confidence that they belong here, sometimes we forget they’re young guys in awe of the whole thing. You make an error or strike out and that old doubt pops up in your head (my guess anyway). Belt can flat out hit and I think he will at the ML level. Crawford can flat out glove, and I think he will show that in this league (will he be able to hit at the ML level? That I don’t know).
If Arias has to take over at SS, I’m sure he’ll be fine. Although I’d prefer to see him as the super sub.
Crawford has hit pretty well in the 2, but in the 4 weeks prior to moving into the 2 he was hitting .258.He had raised his average from .173 to .225 .I’m sure he’s benefitted from hitting in front of Melky, but that won’t keep him in the two when Panda gets back or Bochy is as stupid about building a LU as some think he is. On this team, Brandon is a 7 or 8 hitter still. The two hitter has to be one of the 2 or 3 best hitters on the team. He’s not that. Melky should move back to the two when Panda returns.
As far as his defense, the Giants didn’t just think he was a top flight defender, it was universally agreed upon, every scouting report agreed. I’ll go with Kuiper on this..BTW, Belt, Pagan, and Crawford all lose RBIs last night on the Bloop Rule..
Oops ….a bloop!
“BTW, Belt, Pagan, and Crawford all lose RBIs last night on the Bloop Rule..”
Looking at the boxscore, they all look like solid line drives to me.
Hey, I’ll take ’em any way I can get ’em (and I am sure the players will too). Not only in the box score, but in the W/L column it all looks the same. As long as it translates to a W…it is all good.
It’s not my rule, Bozo. I’m sorry.
I am down with giving both the Brandons some really long ropes, and let them play through the rough spots. I think Crawford’s D will come around, and Belt is already a stud with the glove. If Crawford turns out to be that better than average defensive SS and can hit in the .240 – .250 range…I am good with that. I do think Belt’s bat will come around, too.
Trading Timmy 1-1 straight up? I have no fricking idea. I just hope he comes out and has a quality start today and give the Gigantes a chance to win.
And I agree with Twin…once Panda is back, Melk Man should go back to the two hole. MudBug drops to 7th or 8th. I like Belt in the 6 hole.
I can’t wait to see how this offense jives with Pablo back. Top 5 should be dynamite however they align it and if Belt or Huff gets it going and Arias hits .265, they won’t need to worry about Crawford hitting much in the 8. If he continues to struggle defensively, then an Arias with Theriot or Burriss looks like the logical alternative. Probably see a lot of that against LHP anyway.
“Charge the ball.” My little league coach, Jigs Shepherd, may he rest in peace, taught me that as a very young second baseman and ss. I’ve even used that (among other “baseball as metaphor of life” things) over here in teaching as an example of idiom and advice for life. Some of my students in China from 7 years ago still email me about that, “Charge the ball, Mr. Pao” as they say. Or sometimes they just say “catch the ball”. That works too.
paul, that works on the baes too. SF stole a bunch last night and took advantage of poor fielding by marlins to take extra bases. The guys that run well (blanco pagan melk) and are aggressive force a clean pick up good throw plus catch and tag to get them out. That’s a lot to ask, and more often than not something gets screwed up because you have to hurry, and the baserunner makes it, and gets even more on a bad throw or if ball is kicked around.
Love the Aqualung lesson posted by Zumie last night. I’m gonna have to dust off the Kramer and give that a try. Come to think of it, “Aqualung” might be a good nickname for Bumgarner. As in “snot shooting from his nose.” Yeah, yeah, I’m paraphrasing a bit, but work with me people.
Actually, “The Undertaker”—that someone else (maybe Dennis) proposed for Bum is perfect.
Good take on Crawford. The guy is a trip for sure. Just when I think he is going to provide solid fielding, he botches a bunch of routine plays. Just when I think he’s got a wet newspaper for a bat, he rips an RBI double. For a long time I wanted them to leave him alone out there as the starter, but now I’m fine with he and Arias trading off when Pablo comes back. As a fielder, Crawdad kind of reminds me of Khalil Greene who played under Bochy down here. Khalil was great on the hard plays, but could be sketchy on the routine. Guys like Nevin and Klesko used to get pissed that he was constantly practicing spectacular plays rather than drilling the routine.
To take my Padre analogy one step further, Bochy’s treatment of Belt totally reminds me of the way he used Xavier Nady. Bochy was not a big fan of X—didn’t like his body language etc. One difference is that X was a poor fielder—-and yes, another difference was that Nady occasionally hit the ball over the fence.
The Belt power binge starts today—-I can feel it in my bones!!!!
Were you following the Padres in 2006 when Bochy stuck with Adrian Gonzales, then a 24 yr old struggling to establish himself?
them bones…them bones….
That’s a great idea for Bum’s walk-on music! (grins enthusiastically)
I’m still blown away by Blanco getting out of that run down (with an assist from the catcher). That could have been a rally killer but kept the momentum going in the Giants favor.
Undertaker was Stix’s call. Best I’ve heard.
I post this because it is awesome.

Oh, and one other thing I forgot to mention regarding the final paragraph in for today’s topic:
“So all I’m saying is, maybe we should ratchet down our expectations for him defensively. And if we do that, what are we left with? Brian Bocock?”
Brian FUCKING Bocock? I know you must be kidding, Craig.
Listen, MudBug isn’t (and never will be) Ozzie Smith, Omar Vizquel, or Luis Aparicio.
But Brian SuckCock? That was fucking laughable…
What’s with all the foul language?
I know not about what you speak Loo…ain’t nobody here but us chickens…
I don’t remember Bocock having an error rate like Crawford. He was pretty decent with the glove while he was in there. The bat was swiss cheese, tho…
Swiss cheese seems good to me.
In the words of Chuck, “BLEEP!”
Heard Brian Bocock took a job with R/S Erection Roll Up Doors.
I don’t really get the “trade Timmy” talk. Yes, Timmy needs to get it going; the season is depending on it, but tonight’s the night he could maybe turn the corner, and maybe we’ll look back at this early part of the season, the way we see August of 2010 for him. A bump in the road.
Maybe. (grin) Yes, I’m actually grinning, Loo. (grin, again.) Really.
Good call BF, on last night’s Crawford dive on that grounder up the middle. I thought the same thing. It was well within his diving reach, he should have gloved it or at least stopped it from getting past him, which would have saved one run. I think his defense, not just bat, is a product of not having enough seasoning below. I think there is a difference between major league hitters making ground outs and minor leaguers doing same. The major leaguers are going to hit more hard shots, and lots of them are really fast out of the box. That puts pressure on a glove that needed a season, at least, of defensive chances in the high minors to get into a defensive groove and be able to mentally shake off the occasional error…
Snarkk agrees with BF……News at Eleven.
ahh, nice intro MEGA BIG FLAVOR SHADY but I am awed that you just wanted to say BOCOCK!
Some cock!
Non-baseball. My doctor friend who I’ve loved for so many years and had spurned (that’s a nice old fashioned word) me..she had breast cancer 8 years ago and had rejected help from me (this was before I became ill).. yet has helped me through all of my trials… seems to have had a recurrence after all this time. This appears to be why she turned me away- she didn’t want to be a burden. That’s sadder than just being rejected. Two people who love each other and can be comfort for each other, remain apart because of foolish fears of burdening the other. I know her reasons to be true, I’ve known her too long to not understand her. She is a kind and generous person but always been obstinately guarded about letting anyone in her private place. Everything she will do for me, she won’t abide being done for her. I’ve been nearly inconsolably sad about this. So there you are- you get today’s game with a healthy helping of a romantic tale of woe.. I bet some of you didn’t know that 65 yearold men can still fall in love. She’s 53, BTW, and quite pretty, with freckles still. She is, at 53- hot.She had been a biologist and didn’t become a doctor until she was in her 40’s. We used to live across the street from each other. If streets had “well worn paths”, that one had one. I often wonder how fate would have treated us if I hadn’t left.
Just my take, but I would “cut and paste” what you just wrote (which is quite romantic and heart breaking at the same time) and send it to her in an email, letting her know that you will never give up on her . . . Never assume she is fully aware of how you feel.
By the by, I have dated women that were 53 and older, and most of them were “hot” as you noted about your physician friend. 🙂
freckles are so cool and as I go older the woman with long salt and pepper hair (some grey today) do not know how attractive they are
so I am in a conversation with two women, one corportate supervisor looking to move up. 28. The other a real sweetheart 33. and I mention grey hair. The supervisor tells me she cried when she found one. I ask “really?” and the other says, “yes, I did the same thing”
sniff……
So . . . when it comes to close relations we often make the mistake wanting to a)protect or b)martyr.
what ever it is we deny the love all around us and in doing that we prevent the love that is coming to us. Without realizing.
my advice is to ignore what she is saying and continue to offer her what you think you should, without expectations. Just do it
nipper be my fine friend, but it was my heart racing, not my tear ducts

I’m right here mate. I just got back from the pharmacy. I had to restock the prescription stuff. It’s one thing to run outta beer, it’s another thing to run outta ice. But if I run outta my pills, there’s gonna be hell to pay. I might even bring in my closer in a NON-save situation.
Cheers.

I feel really bad, the other day, I was troubleshooting an ADSL router for a knitting club.
One lady came up to me and looked at the chair between us and said, “These chairs are much heavier than they look.”
Me, pissed off that her whole knitting club was in my way said:”yes, they are”
as I watched her drag the chair away.
hahahahahahahah

I would have trepidation about pissing off a group of women with a bunch of sharp knitting needles at the ready. Could be the start of a new Stephen King short story…
Well, here’s the obstinance I’m dealing with. We had a little E-Mail spat this morning. So I think I’m ending it by saying “Just give me a yes that you and I are OK”… the response? “*I’m* fine”… 16 or 53, women are still the same..
Damn…I was going to agree with Steve’s spin (suggestion) at 12:16 to email her and let your feelings be known. Hang in there, Michael…never say never.
I too have dated older women. Four years deep into one with a fine lady who turns 60 in September (I turn 55 in June – got me a cougar!). She said to hell with the coloring and let it go natural (silver) years ago (I like it). She’s awesome and after about a year of dating I got her hooked on baseball. Hard to go wrong with a woman who loves baseball, shares many of the same interests as you, allows you to do your thing with the boys once in a while, AND still makes your motor rev.
On a baseball note…can we just get a quality start from Timmy today that gives the Gigantes a chance to win the game. It hurts to think that not long ago…I would look at each Timmy start as almost a “sure win.” Sigh….
She’s not an “older woman”, Chi. She’s 12 years younger. And if I referred to her as a “cougar”, life would be over for me.
Ah…yes…someone else earlier on that thread had mentioned older women…my brain got discombobulated.
I get it re: the cougar term. My lady just laughs when I refer to having a “cougie.”
Regardless…it is obvious this lady means much to you…and the important piece to my post was “don’t give up.”
Just for shits and giggles ….Former Giant Reliever Armando Benitez has signed with the Long Island Ducks of the independent. Atlantic. League. He last pitched in the majors in 2008.
Did anyone do the lineup yet? Well, here it is. Theriot returns, Huff Daddy gets another chance and Timmy still needs a goddamn haircut.
Blanco RF, Crawford SS, Cabrera LF, Posey C, Pagan CF, Huff 1B, Arias 3B, Theriot 2B, (Lincecum P)
1.Blanco RF
2.Crawford SS
3.Cabrera LF
4.Posey C
5.Pagan CF
6.Huff 1B
7.Arias 3B
8.Theriot 2B
9.Lincecum P
Damn…it’s Del Mar by a nose with the line-up!
yeah, but your vertical presentation is much more aesthetic and easy on the eye.
I dunno. Something about me and going horizontal seem to go hand in hand.
be honest dennis, that’s not what’s in your hand!
I believe some asked about Crawford hitting 2nd if it was helping any. A little, this tweet from Henry:
Moving Crawford to No. 2 has led to slight improvement. Eight games hitting second: .278/.350/.361. In all the games before: .217/.265/.321
you? Horizontal? Does no one here understand?
YOU DON’T PITCH YOUR CLOSER IN A NON-CLOSING SITUATION.
except to get him work, or because you are ready. Period.
He was hitting .258 in the 4 weeks before the move. People who don’t pay attention forget he was at .173 at one time and raised it to .225 befgore the change. As I posted earlier, if he stays in the 2 after Pablo returns, Bochy is as stupid about building a LU and the bashers think he is..
“Slight” is not what we want!
HUFF in for Belt? I may disagree with many on the prospect of Belt starting daily but I’d like to see a single Flapper anywhere who is FOR Belt sitting and Huff playing.
Luck or not, he had a postive at the plate last night by actually hitting the ball AND piclking up the RBI. Of course he sits for Huff today.
He’s really the DH for the New NL. Okay PH will do.
Ahem…(cough, cough)…BOCOCK!!
I brought “BigCock” back for the select few maniacs (like you Ted) who enjoyed the grade school humor….
I just read thru the thread and the best way to describe it is “different”…
And don’t think it’s not appreciated, Flav
As to Crawford’s defense, interestingly compared to what Kuiper said, this is what was in Schulman’s article from May 18th:
Since a two-error game against Miami on the last homestand, he has worked with infield coach Ron Wotus on slowing his body on groundballs so he can glove them later, which allows him to adjust to the hops better.
Also….after Kuip said the “be aggressive” thing he followed it up by saying “I’d only give Crawford my opinion if he asked for it. I’ll probably tell Wotus who works with him.” So either Wotus doesn’t buy it or Kuip never told him. Or, possibly, there’s a third outcome that I didn’t consider 🙂
We all know Crawford leads the team with 10 errors. Quick! Who’s second with 7?
If you said Buster, you may bring in your closer in a NON-save situation on one free occasion.
Just while I’m not looking please.
Hey Dennis……Do you ever throw down a few cold beers over at that bowling alley Pinole Lanes?
Not recently. I have in the past. Used to sit there and play the “Hot Spot” lottery game that goes off every 5 mins. What a gyp. At least the horses give ya approx. 30 mins in between races.

Hey! CSN just mentioned my name and used my poll question from Twitter for the day.
Who will have the lower ERA at the end of the year, Lincecum or Zito?
Go vote here: http://www.csnbayarea.com/baseball-san-francisco-giants
I saw that Del Mar…you’re famous! I voted…I am in the 86 percentile. Let’s start on getting that shit (Timmy with the lower ERA) right, right now.
Looks like Bochy has been waiting all this time for Belt to get a big hit so he could bench him . . .
You gotta love the fact Blanco wasn’t awed by the pitcher having a Jack Johnson signature glove.
Melky reminds me a little of Terry Pendleton…
I’ll be damned…both pitchers rocking the 55 tonight…
Dammit!
Has to be an error on Stanton…
I see Huff has been taking “hustling lessons” from Burriss. Unacceptable.
I don’t know with whom I’m more upset; Burriss and Huff or Bochy for writing their names in the lineup card.
Bochy was merciless on his show today—when asked why Huff was starting, he said (partially paraphrasing but those who heard it will concur): “Belt’s confidence is very low, his timing is off, I talked to him today and we’re going to give him a break.”
Huff’s ball to the wall was an unexpected gift from that spot in the line up….
Dennis I tried that link but it didn’t work.
If I’m not mistaken, the Pinole Lanes is an AMF establishment. Never been, but I always take a long look at it coming down into that little valley.
‘Diggity— how’s Belt supposed to hit one out if he’s not playing!
Am I gonna see you this Summer? You coming up at all? I might be in SD near the end of August and will expect the *royal treatment* if that happens. 🙂 🙂
I hope Timmy settles down, he doesn’t seem too locked in right now….
What a month for Pagan.
it’s been epic, but the *month* has belonged to Melky…..
He’s been amazing.
I guess it’s more surprising from Pagan.
Melky 40 hits, Pagan now 31.
Absolutely no question that Melky and Pagan have been the guys. As to the BS about Huff not hustling, that was not on him- Because of uncertainty on Stanton catching the ball, Pagan didn’t leave first until late. This was pointed out on the broadcast.
Pagan was still in the .250s with a sub-.300 OBP just two weeks ago..quite a run.
Bullshit. Pagan was 1/3 to second when the ball landed over Stanton. Huff was nowhere near first yet at that point. Huff didn’t hustle. Plain. Simple.
1/3 to second? That’s practically on first. I’ll trust the announcers on this.
If Pagan thinks Stanton wasn’t going to catch that, Angel would have scored standing up. That tells you what happened.
Flav, try this: http://tinyurl.com/83ecxpk
Timmy’s pulling a Secretariat Belmont in my little poll.
Time to bean Stanton
that *structure* out in CF isn’t distinctly Miami. It’s distinctly ugly. At least no one was on base……..
For Tim lately, one run in the 4th is good news.
Melky is amazing. He’s playing some of the best SF baseball I’ve seen in awhile. Hat’s off.
Laser beam, that ball was tattooed!!!
Dennis– Where do I go when I get there? I’m spending way too much time on this, lol. I even created a user name (still don’t see it)
The last link works. Scroll down and look left. The poll is right above the “Battleship” movie ad.
So, when I look at that page, the battleship movie ad is to the right, not the left. And above that is a list of Baggs recent threads. Above that is a window that has a bunch of gobblygook in it and if that’s it then maybe that page gets fucked up by Chrome (which I use as a browser).
But I really want to cast my vote so tell me if I’m on this or not.
Wow! Sweet getting the run right back.
“The one thing you cannot do is panic”–Kuip. Wow, in reference to a guy dealing with a panic disorder that’s rough.
That was a good play though- and Tim came through when it looked like we were in for another blow up.
It was a fantastic play and I’m not calling Kuip out or anything, he’s got a job to do he can’t be worrying about his choice of words. I just was like, “Ugh, that was rough”
I didn’t think you were calling him out. One unfortunate choice of words I remember, don’t know which guy it was, was when Velez got nearly killed and he did the “ugly finder” bit. Obviously he didn’t know the extent of what happened.
A big whew on that inning.
Huge whew. Timmy needs to throw his fastball more often–trust it, it’s got movement and he’s throwing it 93. Less off speed shit, more heat……
Bozo…Looks like they stock some “Clown Fish and Clown Loaches in that Fish tank behind the plate.(grin)
kat – if that’s true, I’m going to have a little chat with my little wet clown friends. Maybe they can help us out. Who knows, maybe the Fish OFers will look away from the waitresses long enough to be distracted by the clown sushi.
