I have added a “beat the streak” page to the right>>>>>>>>.  My streak hit 13 games at BTS. I am accepting nominees for who to add today (and going forward until my streak ends). I have to pick 2 players each day. If you have a nominee (or two) please put forth a thoughtful argument for why I should use your *pick*. I am going to hit 57 games and win the 5.6 million dollar grand prize. Book it. Anyway, if you’ve got literally nothing else to do, feel free to  voice your opinions in the new page>>>>>>>>>

    Weatherproof games: White Sox-Rays, Orioles-Blue Jays, Nationals-Marlins.

The Phillies-Mets game could experience thunderstorms in the later innings Wednesday, but the rest of the MLB slate will remain clear of precipitation.

Oh . . . I almost forgot – for providing you with these outstanding weather reports, I only want 56k (1%) of your expected winnings. 🙂

Take a look at Viciedo for your streak. Dude has been en fuego for over a week now.

Thanks, I will. I am now in 13 thousandth place. Hey, each day I pick up about 10 thousand spots so I’m carving into that leaderboard……
There is some dude who just hit 36 games–that’s tied for the longest streak of the year. I expect him to drop off the leaderboard in the next day or so… 🙂
And Steve: your weather reports are outstanding! A *cash-like* prize will be sent your way should I *beat the odds* and BEAT THAT STREAK!!

Okie dokie . . . By the by, more confidence regarding Dirt’s suggestion, entering Tuesday, Dayan Viciedo is hitting .400 with seven home runs and 20 RBI in his last 14 games played.

Also, if you want to parlay Timmie’s woes, you might add Paul Goldschmidt, who is 6 for 11 (.545) in his career against Tim Lincecum, with three home runs.

Gotta go with Melky as one of your hitter BF.He’s so red hot now 10 hits clear of Bourne for most hits.Has the added incentive of passing Randy Winn team record of 51 hits in a month as he stands at 50 right now. After tying the Great Willie Mays last night for the month of May.

vogs continues to impress me; he battled his way through a solid 7 last night, and owned Upton. He kept SF in the game until they lit up the pen.
That’s where I was going with the post last night about gibson. Last year the pen was lights out and pitching was much improved—this year putz is back to being one, and the guy shaw that he brought in last night sucked and cost them the game. I’m wondering what adjustments they make to their game plan, and what if anything the GM is going to do to try and improve their standing—6 games under .500, 10-15 at home (and remember started the season 3-0 vs. SF), and 10 and a half out. Not to mention SF has won 4 of last 5 against them and looking for sweep today.

remember last year how everyone said the giants were tired after the long post season? why wouldn’t the same thing apply to the dbacks? pitching staff seriously stretched, hitters tired, injuries. nothing the manager can do.

I really dug the early atlantic stuff by aretha franklin with the muscle shoals horns and rhythm section. One of the best cuts was her version of “Do Right Woman”, with her on piano and the gsopel like organ intro and her sisters on backup.

AZ still strikes out a lot and they walk a lot, they play into Tim’s worst and best habits this year. They don’t hit HRs as in the past and it’s here, so I expect a good ballgame from him…
    Who should our All-Stars be?
Melky for sure. Too many catchers having big years, so no Buster, but he has shot with a huge June. So which pitchers? I think Cain is in and Casilla. So- as of now: Cabrera, Cain, Casilla. Not enough decisions for Vogelsong. MadBum would need something like a 5-0 month.

I’ve only been posting intermittently, so you may have covered this. WillieD and Twin hint at it above. But Santiago Casilla is my choice for Willie Mac award winner this far in–as well as All-Star, Twin. Imagine where we’d be without him (not taking away from the rest of the ‘pen). He has been lights out: 14 of 15 save opps converted, WHIP of 0.96, so he’s rarely even letting anyone on. Here’s his 2010-2012 ERA 1.95/1.74/1.17, and his WHIP during that period: 1.19/1.12/0.96. He’s completely unheralded as well; just does his job. As Jon Miller would say, ‘Wow!’

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 30, 2012 at 9:19 am

Not sure on the Wilie Mac, Ed. Lots of contenders: Melky, Panda, a couple others. But I think that Posey is a lock.

Yeah, I’m not sure about this either. This is a hard one to call, because it has little or nothing to do with stats, but is instead bestowed upon the player who best exemplifies McCovey’s spirit and leadership.

And it is a vote by players and coaches…hard to know what is going on in the locker room, etc. that impacts each player and coach to vote the way they do.

I agree with Twin…lots of contenders, but Buster would be my best guess, too (to battle back quietly, etc.).

Vogey just continues to amaze me with how tough he is. Did he have a 1-2-3 inning last night? Didn’t matter, he’ll find a way to get out of any jam. And Melky, what an incredible run. I’ve never seen so many seeing-eye hits. All this guy has to do is put the ball in play and he’s on first.

Last night’s game was on MLB Network. I put on the HD channel and it’s the Spanish telecast, so I had to go to the non-HD channel to get K&K. Very weird, although if it had been the D-Backs’ awful announcers, I might’ve stuck with the Spanish ‘cast.

Been watching the Hatfields and McCoys 3-part movie on the History channel, with Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton in the leads. Wow, if most of what they’re showing is true, what senseless bloodshed. This really was like a mini-war.

I’ll be in a different kind of Beat LA mode the next couple weeks. Go Devils!

  13. zumie's avatar zumie said, on May 30, 2012 at 9:54 am

The baseball world at large probably won’t vote Melky in as an All-Star starter, because of playing on the West Coast, but he’s a for-sure pick as a reserve. Buster’s an interesting case. There will be some sentiment to pick him, but he still has a little rust on defense, and he would have to avoid another big slump on offense. But with a strong month of June, on offense, it’s a possibility, as a reserve. Cainer will probably get picked. Casilla is a possibility, but could lose out in a numbers game regarding rosters. He’s still a big unknown to a lot of the baseball world.

  15. zumie's avatar zumie said, on May 30, 2012 at 10:16 am

What’s he been reading? Oh, glad you asked.
    Here’s some recent books:
“2312”- by Kim Stanley Robinson. A science fiction novel set 300 years into the future, hence the title. By then, humans have colonized some of the other planets and moons in the solar system, and humans themselves are pondering what it even means to be human anymore.
“A Moment In The Sun”- a novel by John Sayles, the film director and film writer. The novel is set in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and focuses mainly on U.S. involvement in the Spanish/American war. Not a stellar moment in U.S. history. The characters and setting are very interesting.
“Radiant Days”- by Elizabeth Hand. An historical/fantasy involving a time-traveling poet and an artist living in mid-1970s New York City.
“The Fifties”- by David Halberstam. An interesting overview and analysis of that decade.

  16. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 30, 2012 at 10:17 am

Back to the All-Star discussion-unfortunately, outside of SF the sentiment may be more against Buster than for him. But the other catchers having big years is the toughest hurdle.Casilla is tied for the league lead in saves. Since so many relievers get picked (6 last year), he’d be in unless he goes Tire Fire.

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on May 30, 2012 at 10:23 am

I would in no way expect Buster to get voted in as a starter, especially since no one self-promotes like Yadier Molina; but maybe he gets the nod as a reserve if he has a strong June and some others slump a bit.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 30, 2012 at 10:41 am

Molina doesn’t have to do much self-promoting this year. Ruiz is probably a lock too. There were three last year, only two more besides Buster have any chance- Lucroy and A.J. Ellis, so a good month and I agree that Buster could get in.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on May 30, 2012 at 11:16 am

I figure Cain will get the nod and maybe Casilla. Pitching long shots would be Vogs and Romo.
I think Melky will get picked. Position player long shots Buster and Pagan. Extra super long shot, Crawford (all the NL middle infielders would have to come down with something, hey it could happen).

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on May 30, 2012 at 11:45 am

Bozo, I checked for bad air alerts in your area. I’d say that all the Pioneer League middle infielders would have to come down with something for Crawford to make *that* All-Star team.Yeah, I know you were kidding.actually, a Theriot/Arias middle infield may not be far off, in which case Crawford is Cajun Toast…next Fresno auditions: Kieschnick, Noonan. I suspect Loo might be right- goodbye to Nate, who currently serves no function whatsoever.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on May 30, 2012 at 12:10 pm

I actually haven’t been as impressed with Arias as most have, his at bats are OK but his D seems a bit shaky at Third. Maybe it’s just that position. I thought Theriot made a nice play last night. If Noonan gets the call, I’d imagine Crawford will be Whiteside’s new sidekick in the search for the hot spots in Clovis CA.

The good news for me is that it isn’t that windy (my house is till just sitting on a pile of wood, it isn’t tied down to anything yet). The bad news. the three loads of dirt they dropped off (250 a load) to spread out to help dry out the areas they would be working on, didn’t get spread. So like I said yesterday busy all last week have not been up on this blog or baseball much. I know this has been hashed (hashish) over many times here and everywhere. Jenkins has an article on Technology and Umpires. Instant replay anyone. I for one am all for it. the other person who has been questioning baseball and technology is Colin Cowherd. He thinks baseball is soooooooooo far behind it might never catchup. Baseball has a bunch of backwards ass country fuck owners and commissioner. IMO instant replay is only the start. should a camera and computer be used to call balls and strikes?? why not? Now as far as that intangable the human element?? How many think football is better with technology? I for one like it.

    • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on May 30, 2012 at 3:17 pm

The thing about balls and strikes, from a technical standpoint, is that you really HAVE to have three orthoganal cameras. I know that software types will try to tell you that you can get away with two but that’s what it is, a comprimise. for balls and strikes, you have to get it right if you’re going to do it at all. You could do two down the foul lines and one overhead. there would also be some calibration issues i imagine. at the end of the day though, i don’t think it’s worth doing. now plays involving outs and runs, yes.

      • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on May 30, 2012 at 3:20 pm

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 30, 2012 at 3:20 pm

I read the Jenkins article. I am all for instant replay for disputed safe/out calls on the bases, and of course some of the other mentioned such as fan interference, fair/foul, etc. But, I have to draw the line there…I think the balls-strike calls should remain with the umps (with the exception of disputed calls like the Tiger game the other day…where the ump said the ball hit the ground and the inning continued).

And agree (I believe in the Jenkin’s article) that it should be an ump who is in a video booth (does not involve the on-field umps).

      • ewisco's avatar ewisco said, on May 30, 2012 at 3:29 pm

I like my idea (go figure!), don’t like the call, appeal to the booth by pointing. Red light, out/foul/not a hr. Green light, Safe/hr/fair. tough to do fair and foul if they don’t run though. Also it’s noticable in the nfl that refs are less forceful with their call and more willing to let replay do it. not optimal.

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on May 30, 2012 at 3:28 pm

I agree with Chi here but there should be more of an attempt to have a consistent strike zone. The variation from umpire to umpire is ridiculous. It would be nice to see the high strike be called more often too.

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on May 30, 2012 at 3:43 pm

I agree…and some of the low strikes called last night were fucking ridiculous. Agree too on the high strike. It is so rare to see a strike called above (or even at) the belt. Why even have a fucking defined strike zone if the umps are not going to use it/enforce it.

They were just saying on Comcast that Winn didn’t put up Melky’s extra base numbers when Randy had his 51 hit month. Actually that couldn’t be more wrong. Winn had 12 doubles 2 triples and 11 HRs in September of 2005.
Melky has 7 doubles 5 triples 3 HR this month.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 30, 2012 at 6:55 pm

Appreciate the info Mike (I always liked Winn) . . . Obviously I didn’t see the Comcast comments, living here in Colorado; however, why do they always have to denigrate/put down the “old record,” while celebrating the “new record?” Especially bad form if both played for the Giants, i.e., celebrate both records. Again, I don’t know the context of how these comments were made, so I might be wrong here.

There was no context involved, nothing to misinterpet. I just heard the statement, Papa and Roberts were on. The words were to the effect that Winn had a great month, then this part was clearly stated ” but Randy didn’t have Melky’s extra base numbers”. I don’t think Winn was being knocled as much as it was just typical ignorance. They were chatting so I really don’t know which one made the statement, it’s a tough calll as to which guy is less informed .

I didn’t do batting stances but I played about a million wiffle ball games in the Cannon’s back yard. It was the perfect field. Narrow, so you could play 1-1. There were enough trees to keep most balls from going out of the park. There was a pool along the left hand side which was the *left field line*. And it was the PERFECT distance to hit a bomb— maybe 135 feet. And I just paced that off in my head. And I bet I’m within a foot of the actual distance………

      • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on May 30, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Maybe it’s been done or maybe I should do it, but Wiffle Ball is the soul of America! Who doesn’t have a Wiffle Ball story — a great one like above? And it’s invented and still made in the U.S.A.! Imagine what an awesome documentary you could make about Wiffle Ball: major leaguers, regular folks, all genders, races, ages. Is anything more American than Wiffle Ball? And is anything American better than Wiffle Ball??

      • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on May 30, 2012 at 8:05 pm

Yours is a quintessentially Californian game. But wait. 135 feet? That is blasting the ball. Man. We too typ. played 1 on 1. The most fun was the wicked shit you could do as a pitcher, esp. screwballs. Does anyone today throw screwballs, a la Carl Hubbell?

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on May 30, 2012 at 8:11 pm

Pawlie if you do write the story, try and interview Kevin Mitchell. I seem to recall him telling some stories about playing wiffle ball in the off season on his front lawn, to keep in shape or something (well, maybe to keep in Kevin Mitchell shape). I’m pretty sure he was proud of being the wiffle champ in his neighborhood.

My brother and I played 1-1 games in the garage with a dense, cut out foam ball. Anything hit above the washer and dryer to the left and the shelving to the right were home runs. Ground balls were outs. We didn’t lob the pitches, and at that distance, hitting the ball wasn’t easy.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 30, 2012 at 8:14 pm

Wow. He broke his bat over his thigh? Either that was one brittle bat or that guy is pumped. I also played a lot of whiffle ball, great summertime pastime to … pass the time. Loved the hitting but also pitching… you can really throw some wicked “frisbees” a la Romo, almost unhittable. We also played a variation when we wanted more hard action.. using the whiffle bat but a tennis ball. Hit it on the sweet spot and the “thwack” would resonate. Also sawed quite a few bats in half….. Ok, now the game might get more interesting. And so far, Timmy is shutting things down after allowing a runner….

Bummer to lose yet another chance to get their first 4-game winning streak as well as their first sweep. But, that finishes the stretch of 20 straight games during which the Giants went 12-8, so nothing wrong with that. Plus the Bums just lost, so no ground lost there.
