A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Fixing The Right Side of the Infield

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 1, 2012

How big of a problem is it? Pretty big. Our 2nd basemen have scored 14 runs this year, last in the NL. Our first basemen have driven in 23 runs, tied for 11th in the NL. And let’s not even talk about that thing, what’s it called…..er…….a *home ran*? Or something like that? Combined this season, our 1st and 2nd basemen have 3 total home runs. Toss our SS’s in and that number swells to 4……

Anyway, Bochy and Sabean have pretty much reached the bottom of the well in terms of available players in the organization who could produce better than the current shoddy lot. Any rock they haven’t checked under is either too young and not ready or they’re just AAA filler, something every organization needs.

Sabean will probably turn to the available waiver wire  list next. I don’t know what that looks like and don’t really want to know. He DID find Burrell and Ross there a couple of years ago.

He could go the trade route. My main man on the scene in Houston, WilcoJoe, brought up Jed Lowrie and Carlos Lee as a possible blockbuster solution. Either or both would be fantastic additions–Lowrie can play pretty much the entire infield and Lee, besides being a 1b, can also play left field. He’s in the final year of a mega deal and we’d have to pay the remainder of the 18 million he’s owed this year. Lowrie isn’t a free agent till 2015.

Both of these guys are better options than every infielder on our roster except Sandoval. What would you have to give up? WillcoJoe threw out Brown OR Panic and Belt or Kieshnick. I suggested Belt and Surkamp (if his arm is healthy). Feel free to toss out your own ideas of what a deal like that would take but remember, you have to give up something good to get something good……..

Who cares? I only want to know who you’re going to pick for “BEAT THE STREAK!”

Weather report is on its way to assist in determining your picks . . . 🙂

Three suggestions Flav for Beat the Streak . . . Dan Uggla is 6-for-8 (.750 BA) with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs in his career against Stephen Strasburg; Nelson Cruz is 5-for-6 (.833 BA) with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs in his career against Jerome Williams; and, Joe Mauer is hitting .338 in his career against the Indians, his fourth best among AL teams. He also owns a .462 career average against Derek Lowe.

Chop, Chop! Get to it my man!

Weatherproof games: Red Sox at Blue Jays, Orioles at Rays, Reds at Astros, and Pirates at Brewers. After a light schedule on Thursday, the rain may end up giving some teams some extra time off on Friday. Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago all will have lingering showers and periods of rain with temperatures in the 60s. Philadelphia and Washington will have warmer temperatures, in the 78-82 range, but also possible showers and a thunderstorm. New York will be cloudy but should remain dry. Elsewhere, the forecast says it will be 68 and partly sunny in Kansas City, and 79 with a mix of sun and clouds in Denver. Low clouds hover over all three California sites, with only Los Angeles reaching above the low 70s in terms of the mercury.

It’ll be interesting, with the new wild card, to see how many teams are traders this year. If it turns into very few teams willing to trade starters but more teams looking for starters, trades could get a bit pricey.

By the by, I am DOWN with both Lowrie and Lee coming to the Giants. I had Lowrie on an FL team last year and he was unbelievably HOT during the beginning of the season, batting over .500 for 2-3 weeks at one point. A very streaky player. Lee might be more problematic. His salary will make him difficult to deal this summer, and he appears unlikely to waive his no-trade clause and wants to remain in Houston badly, CBS Sports reports. Lee has gotten a reputation as a bit of a creature of habit, so this really isn’t much of a surprise. He has turned down trades in the past couple of years. The Astros will try to deal Lee this summer, but if they are unable, don’t be surprised if they restructure his remaining payments in exchange for a one-year extension. The team will be moving to the AL next year and will need a DH, at least until some of their minor-league talent is ready.

Nevertheless, Lowrie would solve all sorts of problems in the infield, i.e., he can play 2nd and 3rd too.

that’s a good point, I forgot about that. You reminded me that Lee spurned the Giants before he signed that mega deal so you’re right, why would he waive his no trade clause now?
Regarding BTS, guys with great numbers against a pitcher are usually a throw out for me. Everyone went with Ortiz yesterday because he was 8 for 10 against Sherzer. Two problems going with Ortiz: 1) guys hitting .800 off a pitcher in a small sample size are very likely to NOT hit .800 off them forever—some o-fer’s get sprinkled in to those stats.2) pitchers read scouting reports just like BTS addicts and they are more likely to pitch around those guys who are hitting .800 off them. Sure enough, Ortiz went 0-3 with a walk yesterday knocking out a ton of players.
Lowrie got me a hit in his first at bat…….

That’s ridiculous. And two issues here: they don’t need a third baseman, and
        2. They won’t trade for a first baseman. Although I’m not personally in favor of all these options, they will make do with some combination of Belt, Huff, Pill, Posey, Hector, and Panda. The need is middle infielders. 1B can addressed internally.

As I pointed out yesterday, and has has no reasonable counter argument- the proponents of a deal with Houston have drastically over valued Lowrie. Boston sent him and a relief pitcher to Houston for a relief pitcher who is now in the minor leagues. So you need to disregard Craig’s warning that “you have to give up something good to get something good…” we need to give up someone(s) who are “OK”. Lee? A 36 YO Free Agent to be, meaning he is worth about what Garko was- a mid-level prosopect. Neither of them are worth any of our top prospects, including Belt unless

the Giants gave up on him. Automatically OUT on a deal with Houston are Brown, Kieschnick, Hembree, Panik, Joseph, Surkamp, Susac, Belt, and any other Top Ten team prospect. Out on the Houston side is Lee because we won’t need him by then and he doesn’t want us anyway. So that leaves us with Lowrie who would be mending SS, BTW. Arias or Fruckie will be at second.
So it’s just Lowrie- in fairness the relief pitcher that Houston gave up had pitched very well in Houston so I’m going to allow a major leaguer to go. Nate would start for Houston, so that’s a given. I’m amazed Loo didn’t jump on that. So really, all that’s left is a relief pitcher-I’m feeling generous so I’ll give them Austin Fleet, a 93-95 MPH reliever in AA. The poster boy for “mid-level”.
So it’s Nate and Fleet for Lowrie, and he’s not worth more. I’m throwing in Nate’s cult.

But I don’t want to move to Houston! Besides being ah Helacious place to begin with, my mother-in-law lives there. But wither Nate . . .

  9. willieD's avatar willieD said, on June 1, 2012 at 9:05 am

loo makes a good point that I think would also apply to stros. Why would they dump lowrie for yet another prospect, unless it was to improve their pitching? I don’t see how SF has pitching, esp potential SP, to give up. The idea of giving up on belt for an expensive old fart makes zero sense economically or otherwise.
1b, imo, is less an issue than middle IF. Crawford and his under .600 OPS is only starting because there isn’t anything else ready, and I doubt he will ever hit. that also might be true of the prospects at that position. Arias has hit the ball in the air a lot lately, which isn’t going to work for him at ATT. Add in burriss theriot culbs gillaspie, nothing to write home about. If any of these guys have to play they hit 7/8 in the LU. Maybe noonan and kiesch help out, i dunno.
Which means it’s all on the top 6, pitching and D, and I think SF can win division with that as long the pen does not get overworked due to SPs unable to go long in games .

  10. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 1, 2012 at 9:07 am

The question about Lowrie has always been his health. When he’s healthy, dude can rake. In 2010 he had a .907 OPS. This year he’s got an .839 OPS. Those are numbers that are elite for a middle infielder.
It’s not relevant what Houston gave up. Players get traded for too much or too little all the time.
Giving them Belt and Nate would be adequate payment if Lowrie continues to show that he can stay healthy (and obviously, the jury is still out on that).
And while I would like Lee I understand the reasons we won’t get him…..

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 1, 2012 at 10:23 am

Again, if you know the history, then you understand why Boston got rid of Lowrie (and Weiland) for Melancon, i.e., Flav is right – it’s not relevant what Houston gave up, In short, Lowrie was expendable because BOSTON HAD A LOGJAM IN THE INFIELD, e.g., Aviles and Punto, coupled with hot shot prospect, Jose Iglesias in waiting, Look it up . . .

  11. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 1, 2012 at 9:26 am

It’s totally relevant what Boston was wiling to give up for him . But whatever- we would not give up what you think we would. Nate and a minor league pitcher not named Hembree is more than adequate.

  12. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on June 1, 2012 at 9:35 am

Lee, no. Middle IF is the key. Both SS and 2nd base are black holes with what the team has, and close to black holes for what is available for what the team can give. If they could score Lowrie for minimal loss, ok, but IMO, he’s always been highly over rated. I said a couple days ago that I figured Sabean was figuring this out, and may the Buddha bless him if he can, which is why he’s the GM and I’m not. I’m throwing the I-Ching tonight for that and I’ll email him in the morning with the answer.

G’s are back to 5 out, that’s ok. Time for a run at the top. I’m guessing the team as a whole is feeling ok, gaining ground while Pablo is out. No time to panic on stupid moves. But it’s pathetic to have Burriss (huge disappointment) and Theriot fighting it out for starts at 2nd.

  13. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on June 1, 2012 at 9:44 am

Lowrie would be a good pick up for all the reasons mentioned. I don’t know the Astros roster. What are their needs? Would a catching prospect plus Scheirholtz do it? With the rising costs of the PS it’s too soon to give up on Belt. If he can take the opportunity in his lap the Rainy Day Fund remains intact.

  14. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on June 1, 2012 at 9:48 am

Nate’s the most valuable commodity they have as far as guys that they would actually give up for short term help. Some low payroll team might put up with his periodic 3 for 32 streaks and see what he could do over a full season. Or maybe a contender would use him the way the Giants did in 2010…

There is one issue that can’t be argued, and that’s Vungo’s superior defense. One or two Pagone-like incidents hardly change that. PaGONE has fucked up in the field this year more often than Andres has in his life. If that was the caller’s bitch, he’s a fucking idiot. .213 BA for Torres might be a better argument…although it’s funny that Torres still has better OBP leading off than the Pagan did. By a LOT…

  19. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 1, 2012 at 10:55 am

Why would the Astros trade him, BTW? Because *we* could use him? That’s often the rationale for Blogger trades. The Astros have a rebuilt FO with hopes to be good-soon. Lowrie won’t be FA until 2015. Lee figures to be dealt, he has no future there. Or here. As to Belt- he’s still considered our best hitting prospect and he’s ours until 2018. Unlikely he’s going anywhere. And it’s entirely possible that no one is going anywhere. The middle infield is immediately upgraded by just playing Theriot/Arias. If they pick up more help at the break, could be a starting

pitcher and a middle infielder a little longer in the tooth than Lowrie..

Looks like they are hitting their career numbers.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 1, 2012 at 1:18 pm

Torres didn’t really really begin his caeer until he starting starting meds for his ADD in 2007. Career doesn’t mean shit, anyway. The trade is not evaluated by what Torres did in 2002, pal. Overall, it’s obviously Pagan who has done better offensively, in the one hole however, OBP is king- and a guy hitting .167 in the one has an OBP 76 points higher than PaGONE had in the 1. The Pagan is also the worst defensive CFer in baseball for the second year in a row as per Fangraphs. Thanks for your input.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 1, 2012 at 2:22 pm

Torres is barely below average defensively so far this year- well better than the worst defensive CFer in the NL. I’ve given Pagan his due, even listed him as one of the legit candidates for the ASG ( as long as defense is not a consideration, which it rarely is.) Torres returned to the starting LU Wednsday and was 2 for 5 with an RBI and run.
The debate is alive to whoever wants to to be. BTW, I meant Pagan was the worst in the NL, but second worst in baseball? Still terrible. With all the talk about Melky, it’s Blanco who saved this offense by getting Crazy Horse Out of the one. BTW, the Torres family welcomed a little one into the family on the 28th. Andres held the infant and didn’t drop him. The Baby Registry is here, I sent the New Parent’s Survival Kit…

Good discourse on my trade proposal…We haven’t had a good one in a while, so I thought I would throw one out there…BTW, I said anyone on the farm sans Brown and Panic for Lowrie and Lee…Houston obviously in rebuild mode and I am not so sure they consider Lowrie a part of the future…They have a couple young ss in the system, so come Mid July I expect to see Wandy, Lee, and Lowrie all up for grabs…Belt makes some sense since he’s from the area, however they have their #1 prospect in 1b Johnathan Singleton waiting in the wings…The Astros biggest need happens to be our strengtht: Catcher…Especially since former prospect (and Stanford alum) Jason Castro looks like a real bust.

Last year 7 teams in the eastern zone were under .500, of 16 teams that were under .500. The bias has nothing to do with anything but New Yawk City. Period. No argument, move along.

I know “Youk” was discussed earlier as a possible addition…well, he’s already on my flap fantasy team. Here’s some thoughts from Rotoinfo (early lineup providers) on Youk…

As for Youkilis, he is 33 years old and has dealt with his fair share of injuries the past few years. However, he’s also due $13 million next year, or a $1 million buyout, so the Sox aren’t likely to get full value if they do intend to move him. Still, the guy has looked like the Youkilis of old in the nine May games he has performed in since returning from injury. Youkilis is hitting .313 with a .371 OBP and .903 OPS as he’s scored seven times while hitting two big flies. Moreover, though most seem to think he is washed up, he has hit 21 homers with 92 RBI and 89 runs scored over his last 147 games. That’s still some pretty impressive production, is it not? Now the .255 batting average in that time must improve for him to return to the level of elite producers at third base, but there isn’t a person out there who wouldn’t take a third baseman who hits .255-21-92-89 for a season, is there?
