A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Panda Needs to Sell that Weight Loss Plan to Jenny Craig

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 9, 2012

Apparently, he lost 40 pounds in the last few days. Wow, that’s some serious dedication to getting yourself in shape…..

The Giants, obviously going with need over principle, have decided to activate The Panda NOW instead of keeping him in AAA until he could get in the physical shape necessary to play 3rd base at the major league level.

It’s probably better than putting him at first base. The sight of a portly Panda dragging his largeness over to first base is just too awkward of a scene to process. Knowing that the ONLY reason you’re at 1B is due to you own inabilities to satiate your appetite, well, that just would seem *wrong*.

But so does calling him up now. Hey, if he shows up pushing 275 lbs and plays a stellar 3rd base then all will be forgotten. Miggy Cabrera and Price Fielder don’t seem to have any problem fielding their positions at close to 600 pounds combined. But the pressure is ON The Panda. If he’s fumbling balls (or worse, he can’t get around his round mound to field a ball) it’s going to be tough to ignore the *pink Panda* in the room…….

It’s obvious now that the only thing the Giants intended to do by calling him out publicly was to call him out publicly. The closed door “You’re too fat” convo’s didn’t seem to go anywhere, maybe telling the fans about it might, in some strange way, motivate him to exercise some restraint during  feeding times.

All I know is that defense just took a huge hit over at third base……

I wouldn’t want to be the guy responsible for getting the post game spread into the locker room. Just the logistics of it, how many tables to add, where to stack all the butter……And what if you’re late getting it out there? A hungry Panda is an angry Panda. Careful not to anger it…….

So I didn’t go to the Belmont, as you know, and I was having trouble with my tvg account so I went to the Bay Meadow’s satellite wagering spot. Man, there are some down on their luck cats at that place. Here’s a pic of some dude who was lying like this for 2 hours. I kept checking him to make sure he was breathing. I considered rolling him over at one point. I didn’t even notice the guy in the background till I saw the pic, lol. It was like an outdoor Shawshank Redemption moment……

Weatherproof games: Rays at Marlins, Padres at Brewers, Dodgers at Mariners and Athletics at Diamondbacks.

The weekend will be sunny for most of the scheduled action with the potential for temperatures topping 90 degrees at some point in Chicago, St. Louis, Colorado and Baltimore. Expect mid-to-high 80s in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. San Francisco will be much cooler with the mercury topping out at 72. So, where’s the potential for rain? It’s in New York and Boston on Saturday (with partly cloudy skies lingering into Sunday) and in Atlanta and Minnesota on Sunday.

The giants need to stfu. Not being in shape to play baseball? Wtf is that?
Sergio romo, whose primary job is sit on his ass in the bullpen for 7 innings every single day for 6 months, hurt himself stretching, if I heard right. Other than warming up in the pen, how much has he actually played baseball this season? 3b is not a very physically demanding position, except for the arm strength necessary to make the long throw to 1b. And remember, at least half of every 2-3 hour game is spent in the dugout with your buddies.
I didn’t see any reports sando needed to be forklifted on and off the bus in Fresno. This is the guy who hit .300 and blasted 23 HRs last year, and there is zero doubt he is the only guy capable of putting up those types of numbers on this team.
Like I say about going to the gym–if you are healthy enough to walk in and walk out, you’re good. Same for sandoval–if he can walk into the clubhouse and onto and off the field, let him play. He’s in baseball shape, at least for what he has to do.

After losing the first 40 lbs its all about maintaining anyway.

This tells me 2 things. Charges in Santa Cruz are unlikely and there will be Panda sightings at 1b.

Things changed. Melky strained a hamstring. Hopefully Melky is back tomorrow, but who knows?
The Giants need Pablo’s bat in the lineup. Arias plays nice D at third, but his bat totally disappeared.

How awesome was that watching the Dodgers get no-hit last night. I had lost interest in the Giants game, and had flipped over to see how the Mariners were doing against the Dodgers.

Eric Wedge gets the Bruce Bochy Award for brilliant bullpen management. Pulling the strings on a 6 pitcher no-no was awesome work . Uh…nice job by the hurlers, too.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 9, 2012 at 8:50 am

Arias will get plenty of work. Crawford is close to .250 against RHers now but still helpless against LHers, and Theriot is going to need some blows. This is why, like it or not, it should been obvious that Burriss would stay. Otherwise, Arias would have been the only non-1B infield reserve.

Giants management doesn’t make give a rat’s ass about getting players emotionaly(Huff) physical and emotionaly (Panda) back in there. In Huff’s case he is just an 11mil cheerleader taking up a roster spot with no value to any teams now.Panda they do need, even at 300lbs he’s still their most productive and best hitter(sorry Melky) since he’s come up.

  10. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 9, 2012 at 8:34 am

I said they should keep him in Fresno until he was fit to play third. They saw him for three games at third, I did not. Anybody else see him? At this point, all that’s left is whether his performance shows he’s fit enough, not what the team said or what any of us think . The proof is in the budin de pan…

I saw Brett Wallace of the Stros hit his first HR of the season last night. This is the guy who was drafted 13th overall in first round by cards 2008. They sent him to the A’s in the Holliday deal, A’s sent him to Jays to get Michael Taylor. So Beane had Cargo, traded him for Holliday, and eventually wound up with Michaell Taylor, who is still in the minor leagues at Sacto. Must feel good about all the coin he saved ownership.

  12. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 9, 2012 at 8:48 am

First, I love the way Bochy manages. I think under that cap, that would fit on a bucket, is a true baseball mind.
Second, I am a fan of Sabean as well, we can argue the good, bad and ugly moves all day but in the end the guy gets it right.
But in my opinion this thing with Pablo stinks of bullshit. This management group and now Bochy and Sabes have used the press for negative reasons that I don’t understand. Going back to 2002 when they leaked out Baker’s problems with the IRS while shoving him out the door. Now it appears they will go to the press whenever they feel someone needs to be in shape (Panda, Huff and I’m pretty sure Timmy). The fact is before rehab Panda was fielding his position fine and IMO better than Arias. We are led to believe that Pablo became so out of shape during rehab that he wasn’t able to play at the ML level. Sorry, but this smells of total bullshit to me. I/we don’t know how many closed doors he’s had and I don’t care. It’s a closed door meeting and that’s were it should stay. You want to pull in another player or players to kick Panda in the butt, fine. But trying to lay the ground that fans will boo him making an error (rightly or wrongly thinking it’s a weight issue) is FUBAR to the max.

I know everyone doesn’t agree with me on this, so I’m sorry about the rant. But going to the press on this shit is pretty minor league in my opinion and not what I’d expect from two men I admire for what they’ve done for this team and baseball men as a whole.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 9, 2012 at 9:12 am

Well, Timmy volunteered the info on his double-double diet last year. As to Pablo, they just about had to address the weight issue after the 2010 season, he was popping buttons breathing . This year? You can bet there will be plenty of videos comparing Arias with Sandoval on similar plays. Probably not so much with their homerun trots…Interesting comments from Bochy on first base. He listed Belt, Posey, Pablo, and Hector as guys who can
play first. As Pavlovic noted-no Huff. Oversight or significant? I guess we’ll see. .

twin, 2010 he also had the divorce thing going on, I dealt with mine by drinking, Pablo went with eating . I know he was out of shape (it was easy to see on the field). This year, yes he was bigger but his fielding wasn’t an issue (that I can recall). The Huff thing after last year should never have been made public and I wonder if that was a contributing factor to his Jimmy Piersall impersonation. This year’s Panda thing just reeks of management pissed that he was on the party during rehab and got named in a rape case but they turn it around to say, gee Panda sure is big. The whole Panda is too out of shape to play, but three days later, well maybe he is able to not only play but start. I think that is playing with a kid’s head that already has a lot to deal with, IMO that’s totally fucked up.
Sorry, I won’t go on about it but it just seems bush league to me.

People got hung up on Manny being the one to go without paying attention to roster math. As to Edlefsen down, most did get
that right- even the mop up guys have to be respectable in tight games when called upon. Kontos up? Take a look at the Fresno staff’s numbers and that was a no brainer. That he’s been around a bit also is an asset. Experience is a real plus in the pen…

I don’t know what was the most impressive: Most people think it was Big Red’s 31 length margin of victory. Others think it was his world record time of 2:24 for the 1 1/2. I think it was his 6F split of 1:09 4/5. That’s a fast final time for six furlongs. But Secretariat still had to run six more. And then to finish in the time that he did, as Turcotte and his connections thought, “Ronny, don’t fall off” was truly amazing. I think Secretariat’s owner, Penny Chenery, summed it up best…”He just felt like running that day.”

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 9, 2012 at 3:10 pm

Pill wasn’t staying under any circumstances. What could have happened is that both were out and one of the guys I just listed replaced Manny. • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on June 9, 2012 at 3:27 pm

Aside from all that horseshit, what does Manny bring to the table as a bench player? What, we’re going to have him pinch hit for the P so he can bunt and move the runner over to second? Brilliant. He’s not a pinch running threat as I just pointed out. We have 9 inter-leagues games coming up in the next two weeks. Are you telling me Pill wouldn’t have been the better DH option vs a LP other than Huff, Shitholtz, Sanchez, Arias or Burriss?

If Bochy uses Burriss as a DH in any of those 9 games, I’ll demand his resignation the next day.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 9, 2012 at 3:24 pm

The guys that can play second or third in Fresno are just as bad/good as Burriss. The only thing he offers is speed, and he’s a familiar face, which counts for a little, not much. Arias is the first choice utility guy, Burriss is nothing but a pinch runner now unless an IFer gets hurt. If they dumped Burriss instead of Pill and an IFer got hurt, they’d have a Fresno IFer up the next day for insurance. That’s all Burriss is, an insurance guy if there’s IF injury, he’s not a go to utility guy. Burriss is #25 with one foot on the bus to Palookaville…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 9, 2012 at 3:26 pm

“His skill set is tiny, he’s the infielder Ford…” Manny can play several positions acceptably and his speed is an asset beyond just stolen bases. Those are assets more valuable than casual fans recognize. But I already said he might be replaced as soon as they’re confident that one of the Fresno middle infielders can help.

I’ll admit, I was somewhat concerned that Vogey might “bounce,” to use a racing term, off of last year’s great season. No sir. Ryan must have Bob Baffert as his trainer. “NO BOUNCE, BOB” as I like to call ’em. Bob’s Old School. He works his horses hard, and he works them often. No rest for the weary. Bob started out training quarter horses. They’re all about speed. No different in today’s thoroughbred world. But you have to train, work, and most importantly, RUN your goddamn horses as much as they see fit.

Obviously not SF. When I lived on Pot Hill, my neighbor’s boyfriend knocked on my door, stuck a .38 in my face and suggested that I not park in “his” spot again. Under the circumstances I agreed that I had made a poor decision..

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 9, 2012 at 4:06 pm

Where were you at on Pot Hill twin? I lived at 17th and Texas and with the Bottom of the Hill next door I probably could have gotten away with playing my drums (I didn’t though).

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 9, 2012 at 4:28 pm

Rhode Island on the top of the hill. Lived there 7 years, loved it. Loved the Bottom of the Hill, Goat Hill Pizza, Chiotra’s butcher shop…that was one of the great neighborhoods despite my little confrontation. Great diversity, working class, gay, hippie types, the whole gamut..

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 9, 2012 at 4:39 pm

The neighborhood became even greater (IMO) being walking distance to the Ballpark. When UC Med put in the buildings and paths, it was only a 10 – 15 minute walk for me to the games (plus for awhile the 10 Townsend ran late and would drop me off or pick me up at 4th and Townsend). Walking could take up to a half hour going home, depending on my adult beverage intake.

Ted, I hope you appreciate (I think you will) that my next quote will be verbatim from my FINAL February 6, 1973 official “Blazing Saddles” screenplay…

GABBY JOHNSON: A grizzled little grub-staker in shredded, but stylish, buckskins. He chaws tobacco and spits great globs of brownish gook as verbal punctuation.

“Hol’ on. Consarnit, goll-darnit. I’ll be a horn-swaggeled bush-whackin’ side-windin’ saddle horn ….Ravvid, ravvid, ravvid… (the rest of his dialogue is completely incomprehensible)

The rest of his dialogue is completely incomprehensible?
Sounds like Gabby would have made a great Flapper.

      • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on June 9, 2012 at 4:49 pm

Now who can argue with that? I think we’re all indebted to Gabby Johnson for clearly stating what needed to be said. I’m particulary glad that these lovely children were here today to hear that speech. Not only was it authentic frontier gibberish, it expressed a courage little seen in this day and age.

Bozo,I was long gone before the new ballpark came about- started working my way north when I became chef/partner in a Napa restaurant near the Silverado CC- at the time the “chefs” were the brothers of the manager. The sort of Italian/Contintental food was antispeptic, tasteless crap- and the clientele, aged folks, loved it. On Mother’s Day the *daughters* were 70..
Anyway, one day I came in early and the guys were making THEIR food, it smelled delicious, a first. That night the transformation began- one of the specials was rabbit braised with poblano chiles and portabello mushrooms. One of the brothers asked “For the PEOPLE!!??” (they were Mexican, BTW). He was incredulous but ultimately proud that we worked many of their their foods into a high end restaurant menu.
Before long the kitchen was really cooking, the brothers actually wore chef’s outfits instead of the street clothes they had worn- and best of all, the old farts still loved it-my take on California cuisine with Mexican influences..That was one of the most satisfying gigs I’ve had..

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 9, 2012 at 5:38 pm

The food sounds great twin. I don’t know if you’ve been to New Orleans, there are so many great food options. But for high end dining, you can’t go wrong with Brightsens. Frank does a rabbit tenderloin with a mustard sauce that is awesome (although don’t say awesome if Tom Brokaw is sitting next to you. He’ll explain to his table mates that awesome means good and then you might ask Sandy the waitress to turn down the TV).
Cheers man. Great game and this clown is out of here.

But thanks to Moms (God rest her soul) she introduced me (beginning at the GGF Turf Club) when I was only 11 yrs old, not only how to cook a little. But more importantly, Moms taught me how to ORDER with knowledge, style, class and as a gentleman with my lady friend.

    Thanks Mom. I love you.

That is one disturbing picture. What is that slab of concrete those guys are passed out on? It looks like some sort of nuclear war bunker and those two fellas didn’t make it inside in time.
Speaking of good meals….I just made myself what I thought was a helluva salad–romaine, avocado, tomato, chopped up ham, sunflower seeds and homemade Italian dressing. Followed it up with one of those creamy Mexican popsicles (I love the coffee flavored ones)
Denny–I’ve seen Baffert down here at the beach a few times. Throwing the football around, hanging out, seems to be comfortable mixing in with the regular Joes at Mission Beach rather than being secluded in a place like La Jolla.
