Weatherproof games: Phillies at Blue Jays, Marlins at Rays, Giants at Mariners.

Sunny is the order of the day for Friday, with only a thunderstorm in Minneapolis ruining the perfect forecast. Expect temperatures in the 80s and sunshine in Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Washington and Atlanta. New York, Los Angeles and Oakland will be a bit cooler, while St. Louis and Texas are likely to play their games in the 90s.

In Central America, they call sand flies Chitras or “no see ums.” When those fuckers bite you, they leave welts worse than a mosquito. Bite, bite, bite . . . Scratch, scratch, scratch. Ha. You probably knew that Bozo because I think your State and a couple of others, have either them or the mosquito designated as their State bird.

      • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 15, 2012 at 7:23 am

We do Blade. In a normal season, after Memorial day the no see ums show up (they leave little red marks on me), this is followed by mosquitoes. After the first heavy rain in June we’ll usually get the yellow flies, the second this suckers get on you, you’re bit (these fuckers do leave welts on me). After the yellow flies (usually August) the mosquitoes come back until it gets cold. Last year and this year have been different. Last year we had a huge wild fire so the no see ums came in early and in droves (I think because of the smoke) but a very short yellow fly season. We then had the flood which produced mosquitoes like I had never seen (or anyone else around these parts). that with a mild winter has made the mosquito not only the State bird but I think the Governor as well.
We had our place sprayed (this is in addition to the guy who goes up and down the road spraying everyday). Now, in the beach towns this extra spray will last about 3 weeks, where we’re at it was one week.
To say I’m sick of bugs and mud would be putting it very, very mildly.

These are my top 5 destinations for No See Umms and Mosquitoes:

        1. Grand Cayman – I was on a dive trip with a girl friend of mine and we decided that it would be romantic to walk along the beach at night. Wrongo! I was a pin cushion for a swarm and when I got back to the hotel, I had bite marks on my entire back. Disgusting. Ironically, the little fuckers didn’t come out during the day, only night.

        2. Twin cities (St. Paul and Minneapolis). I was there during Air National Guard training for 2 weeks and got eaten alive by mosquitoes. Not certain which was worse – the friction’ humidity or the bugs. Only relief came from the 3-4 showers I took daily.

        3. Three month RV trip across the western States and Canada (British Columbia). I would take a bath in a lake or river in British Columbia and immediately after exiting, I would get swarmed by the mosquitoes . . . Quite hilarious me running for the RV and locking the door, then spraying myself with DEET.

        4. Boquete, Panama, where I noticed these big bites on my leg, that I was scratching constantly. Ironically, I didn’t feel the bites, only the aftermath. I asked around and everyone said, “Chitras.” No idea what that meant, until I googled the word and found out they were sand flies or no see ums. Ha.

        5. Any camping trip I go on. Mosquitos seem to get advanced word I am coming for dinner . . . umm, me being the dinner.

Is there something in BF’s opening post that is only visible with 3D glasses or something? It just says “Go get ‘em….” here.
Well, I’ll make a baseball post, as usual. Sorry about your bugs, Bozo. Don’t you worry about the spraying? Do you know what they use?

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on June 15, 2012 at 8:14 am

Not sure what they used twin. The normal stuff they spray isn’t that heavy duty so we tried The Mosquito Guys (or something), it was great for a week but we hoped it would last longer. We live next to a huge wild life preserve and have canals all around us so we do expect the little blood suckers. But, with the mild winter and flood waters getting into areas that were normally dry we have mosquito larvae that had been dormant for decades. So what we have, I guess, is prehistoric mosquitoes used to sucking the blood from dinosaurs now wanting to dine on me.

      Back to baseball.

we were camping along the Sacto river and when i looked down at the top of my thighs, my levi’s were black with mosquitos. They couldn’t get through the thick denim but it totally creeped me out. no one else was being “bugged” but i was covered (they fucking love me the little bastards). I sprayed the shit out of them and went and sat in my tent with the screen zipped up.

lowrie 0-10 in the series…anyone in Seattle look interesting? some guys on merc blog mentioned that could be Nate’s next destination. Can’t see it, esp since melk is coming off leg problems. Nate is league avg. hitter for his position if that who plays a good RF, and putting him there is OK to give the others a rest. I think Nate would do fine in a NL Central hitters park where he could jack more HRs, but he isn’t bringing anything except middle IF replacement level player in a deal. I don’t know anything about the new kid, but apparently he’s nothing special.
I know i’ve said this before, but dumping off Huff or Burriss isn’t going to magically enhance the team. Sure these guys suck but whomever takes their place, which is at far end of the bench, isn’t going to add anything of any significance. We’ve had Pill, culbs, gillaspie…zzzzz.
If you look at yesterday box (no posey), Giants have a few guys with high OPS (melk pagan blanco and sando), couple guys in middle .750 or lower (belt nate) and few others that are .600s (theriot hector arias, and crawford is there too). Kind of an odd mix…what is sabe’s next move? Bad Z outing i’m sure has to give him pause to wonder about pitching depth.

  9. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 15, 2012 at 8:33 am

Anyway, as to Arias’ play and tyhat of Blanco. Blanco’s is one of the great regular season catches in MLB history- these plays are alwaysa measured not just for the difficulty of the catch on it’s own, but the significance of it. That it preserved what all observers agree was one of the 2 or 3 greatest regular seson pitching performance gives it it’s pedigree. Arias made a tough play but whether he stumbled as it appeared he did, or chose to back up, he had a hand in making it a difficult play. Don’t misunderstand( and don’t think this opinion means I don’t like him-he should have been here to open the season, and he should be starting ), It wasn’t an easy play but it’s not even close to being the category that Blanco’s unbelievable catch is.

If his play were in the World Series, it would be considered at least the equivalent of Willie’s catch. Why don’t we peak at three-Mays, Gregor, and maybe the best ever- Edmunds? Edmunds’ best catch is the first one in the series of top catches of his. I think it’s real close between his and Blanco’s.

I lived in Long Beach during that time and saw Edmonds play a lot on TV and in person. He was a great fielder. That Angels outfield of Salmon, Anderson, Edmonds was a pretty good one. I don’t think they were as a whole as good as Blanco, Pagan, Cabrera though.

I’ve only been lurking for a couple of years now, but I thought I’d mention that I’ll be at the Safe for all three games this weekend; Vogelsong, Lincecum and Bumgarner versus Vargas, Beavan and Felix. I’m really looking forward to it. The G’s haven’t had much luck in Seattle over the years, so hopefully that’ll change this time. The Padres mauled the M’s this week. I believe the M’s are hitting below .200 as a team at home this year.

Kudos to Matt Cain for one of the best games in MLB history. I only got to see the last two innings, but what a pair of innings it was. I still can’t believe what a great catch Blanco made. Phenomenal.

If I get any decent pics, I’ll post ’em.

The “Greatest Catch” is a totally subjective call-no right or wrong answer

  11. willieD's avatar willieD said, on June 15, 2012 at 8:53 am

In the “summer of 68” book I read, dominant theme was year of the pitcher, after which they lowered the mound. McLain won 31, Gibson with 1.12 ERA, bunch of no hitters, Yaz leads AL in batting at .301.
We’ve already had two perfectos, total of 4 n/h, and it’s only June damn near 100 games still left.
I remember an interview with Bowa that Rome did during Bonds era of offense, and bowa thought that expansion had watered down talent level and caused teams to have too many pitchers of less than mlb caliber. Twin has pointed out runs and offense in general have been declining for a few years now–are there too many hitters that shouldn’t be at mlb level on rosters now?
For catches, I’d add DeWayne Wise grab that he bobbles, and the Gary Mattews Jr. one he twists above the wall.

I’ve been to the Mariners ballpark, SafeCo Field, a few times. It’s similar to AT&T in design and how it plays, and how nice a ballpark it is. One of the differences is that SafeCo has more outfield seats. They have a regular rightfield section at a normal distance; whereas AT&T has the narrow walkway, shorter distance, and high wall. AT&T obviously has the awesome view of the Bay, for the viewers above field level; SafeCo’s unique thing is that a railroad track is next to the stadium, and you hear trains going by during the game, as the trains honk their horns as they go by the stadium.
The last time we were there at the Mariners ballpark we bought an Ichiro bobblehead, and it now stands proudly in our bobblehead collection.

Mike, loved the Mays catch, as that’s the 1st time I’ve seen what happened AFTER the catch. Mays alwaysaid the throw was the most important part of that play, and it at least shows the runner on 2nd only being able to take 3rd even though Mays was so deep in CF.

Made it to my first San Jose Giants game last night. Nice little venue right next to Happy Hollow. Other than the home team winning there is not much to report. No Franchez sightings. Panik played SS and is hovering in the .250-.260 range. He had a hit, scored a run and fielded his opportunities but nothing really jumped out about the guy to me. Luke Anders triple in the 8th led to the winning run. Jose Valdez closed it out. He was noticably bigger physically than everyone else on the field and hit 95 on the gun. After fielding mistakes put runners at 2nd and 3rd he dominated the last two batters to slam the door.

Twin, I don’t know about Valdez but he the name was familiar for some reason. Any insight here?

My cousin is dating a guy Ken Mitchell who blogs SJ Giants over at the Examiner. It’s good to see her finally do something useful. I would share a link but he hasn’s posted his report yet. He’s a good guy. I have known him for about 4 years now and never knew he even liked sports. He keeps a low profile at family events. Probably to avoid my Aunt jumping on his ass about everything. Real bitch that one.

Jose has been mired in “A” ball since 2006. He was signed out of the DO at 17. As you saw, he’s a strapping guy-6-7 250. Just looking at those durn numbers, he obviously has big stuff, but has suffered with his control. This has been his first successful season, so far. Considering that he’s still in the low minors after all this time doesn’t bode well for him ever seeing any MLB duty…but you never know.

Seattle fans will get to see the Freak, their hometown hero, without having to travel. I think that’s a good thing for baseball fans. But again, it doesn’t matter here in the Bay Area. if I want to see some players on an American League team, I can always hop on BART.

Re: the comments above on watered down offenses, etc. A contributing factor not to be overlooked is the low percentage of black athletes in MLB. Now at 8% of total MLB players, less than half what it was in 1959. For whatever reasons, current day black athletes in the US are not interested in the game, or don’t have access to it as kids to become interested. Latin athletes have filled in the spaces mostly. They’re good athletes, but I think its a shame that baseball is losing potential black stars and superstars to football and basketball. We need more guys like Bo Jackson, Fergie Jenkins, Reggie Smith, Dave Stewart, Kemp now, or even lesser lights like Shawn Dunston. More black athletes in the game can only increase the quality of play. Supposedly Selig is doing something with these inner city programs, but I haven’t seen much progress. The fact that Burriss, at his pedestrian skill level, is the only MLB black player from the DC area, is astounding to me. Maybe this news about concussions in football will drive some black kids to baseball. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/story/2012-04-15/baseball-jackie-robinson/54302108/1

Snarkk, I actually think that baseball will once again be the sport all kids, black, white, etc., gravitate too. Parents, in a few years, wont allow their kids to play football anymore. It’s actually happening as we speak.

Just my take, but in 15-20 years, I think NFL football will disappear, and most certainly, Pop Warner/High School/college football will as well . . . perhaps sooner. Concussions and other serious injuries are the death knell for this sport. We will be talking about pro football, the way the post persecution Christians use to talk about the Roman Circus/feed them to the lions and gladiator fights to the death.

Would love to see a renesaissance of baseball, and agree with Snarkk that the decline of black athletes probably factors to some degree. More baseball clubs need to do like our SF Giants, and have programs like the Junior Giants to help inner-city kids get exposed to baseball, etc.

But, you have to remember that in 1957 there were only 16 Major League clubs. By 1964 the number had increased to 20. And now, 30. So, from 64 until now you have 10 additional teams (25 man rosters…250 additional players). So, I do think that the player talent is watered-down from the days in which we were growing-up.

As Colin Cowherd said on ESPN radio this week: if mommies are afraid their boys will get hurt, they’ll have them play another sport. And if little boys don’t play football, they don’t grow up to be NFLers. The other issue: lawsuits. A friend of mine compared the concussion liability to the avalanche of asbestos lawsuits.

I love the brevity of the post by Mr. Flavoris. This will make it easier for him to complete his appointed rounds, meaning 1,000 posts, or whatever the magic number is.

Great catches? Among them is a leap by Dave Winfield OVER the wall in Yankee Stadium in the 1980s, I believe. (Loo, know it?) But, honestly, a catch has a context. Therefore, the importance and drama of Blanco’s are key factors. BTW, Mays says a catch in Brooklyn was way better. As I recall from his bio, he dived and passed out. They thought he was dead. Hung on to the ball. That’s what counts.

Has anyone heard from the Sun Dressed Goddess? Maybe she was sitting near Cain’s wife imparting good mojo.

“Therefore, the importance and drama of Blanco’s are key factors.” Absolutely. As I noted above, it goes down as one of the great regular season catches because it preserved the perfect game, one deemed as one of the 2 or 3 greatest regular season pitching performances…
What was at work that night? That was an impossible catch. And I think Pagan made reference to “Angels in the Outfield” when he said he thought Snyder’s drive was like 10 rows deep and came back..who were the Angels out to benefit that night? Cain? Or BigFlavor? And why? Wah-ooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…

I just watched that Wright non-error that the Mets appealed. Why did he try to bare hand that? Upton is fast but he’s not THAT fast. It was an error in stupidity for sure….

    • zumie's avatar zumie said, on June 15, 2012 at 3:35 pm

He tried to make a “show-off” move and he botched it, and the whole thing blew up in his face because of how the game turned out.

      • zumie's avatar zumie said, on June 15, 2012 at 3:36 pm

The scorekeeper should have ruled that an error, IMO.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 15, 2012 at 3:42 pm

exactly, total show off move. I could see if it was a perfect bunt he was rushing in on to try to field, then you go bare hand and if you miss it it’s a hit. But he was just hanging out by the bag trying to showboat the throw. That is absolutely an error. And the *situation* of the game shouldn’t have mattered at all. That was an error you give and ENJOY giving it for him trying a show off play like that……..

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 15, 2012 at 3:52 pm

If he ruled it an error right away, yes. But it would not be correct to do it after the game. At to the “situation”, the no hitter was no factor then, it was the 1st inning- and that’s why it should not be overturned. Dickey pitched the rest of the game with a hit on the books- extremely unlikely he pitches the no hitter if it had been ruled an error.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on June 15, 2012 at 4:03 pm

Oh I don’t think it should have overturned– they don’t want it overturned because it was a bad call, they just want it to get the no hitter. That’s bullshit. Can you imagine the Mets racing off to the official scorer right after it happened requesting him to change that to an error? Wright woulda loved that, lol. If they didn’t do it then they should yap about it now. Sounds like Dickey didn’t even want them to do it.
But yeah, it’s weird that didn’t get scored an error right off the bat. I just don’t see how that could be considered a hit the way Wright went about approaching and ultimately trying to field the ball

      • zumie's avatar zumie said, on June 15, 2012 at 4:05 pm

Plus, the sort of unwritten rule about the first hit needing to be a clean hit. But maybe that’s different if it’s that early in the game, and the game is on the road.

  39. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 15, 2012 at 4:12 pm

I know why they want it overturned-as you said , because they want the no hitter- and that would set the worst possible precedent. He pitched the rest of the game throwing and most importantly- thinking- he was pitching a ONE hitter. At that point it doesn’t matter if it was a good or bad decision- he did not pitch a no-hitter,and overturning the call is giving him a no-hitter, he still did not pitch one.

Hamilton hospitalized with a viral infection? Assuming that’s true, this guy just has too many weird ass things happen to him. There was a list posted on the internet earlier today (CBS maybe?) that listed off all his career ailments and the number of games he’s missed because of them. It was a very long list.
I’ve watched a fair number of Ranger games this year (I’m watching Yu pitch against the Astros right now) and one thing I can say about Josh Hamilton is that he might be a dumb player. This guy is big, 6’5 250 or so, and he’s repeatedly sliding head first into bags. You can’t do that when you’re that big, injury prone, and getting older. It could be his gamer*ness and not his dumbness but if I’m a team that’s considering dropping 20-0+ million on this guy there is no way I pull the trigger on that, especially considering all the strange injuries and the possibility of relapse……..
