A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Twelth Night (or Twelve Knights)

Posted in Uncategorized by tedspe on June 25, 2012

The last few days, these intros to The Flap have been filled with prologues encompassing heartfelt emotions, statistical anomolies, anecdotes, stats, amusing pondries and pure class…bottom line? Quality.
And for all you loyal Flappers out there expecting same, allow me to assure you—this comes to a screeching halt right now.
—————————————————————————————————————————————
Such are the stuff that dreams are made when a blog goes AWOOOOGAHHHHHH and hence the blog Pappa says…I’M BEAT and beseaches “Willies, Mays and McCovey, why hast thou forsaken me?? I loveth thee and ask only for thine assistance.”
And, as begotten… the disciples didith come upon the pained wretch what wasith a Flav and askedeth “How mighteth we heal thee, oh Flav?”
And the Flaveth answered “I’m freaking beat! Dids’t thou not heareth me??!!”
But the disciples sayid “NAY oh Flav NAY!! The Flappeth cannot be done. Who shall giveth the Posey OBP?! Who wouldst giveth the Sandoval weight of stones?! Who wantonly should summon the expected DJLoo POTD?!”

Big Flavor pondered, wracted and reeked with guilt of betraying his nation whilst stilleth thinking “What the fuck have any of these assholes done for me?”

(to his credit, he did not sayeth… “lately”)
But thus, yeah or yay, behold, The Flavorish thought upon himself…Johnny Carson!!
“Of course (he sayeth) If I were to wean and allow guest hosts visa-a-vi a Leno or Joan Riverish, yay, darenth I say nostalgically…a Joey Bishop, thus the vacant premise of my being yet the token of my soul. This royal blog of Giants fans, this sceptred blog, this cyber earth of majesty, this seat of Mars, This other Eden, demi-paradise,This fortress built by Nature for herself!!!!!
(gaaaaaasssp…he theneth take a deep breath, and realized his digression)
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in McCovey Cove,
Which serves it in the Sabean office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a triples alley,
Against the envy of less happier lands, preferably the Dodgers—
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this San Francisco”

And thus, my children, my brethren and my bitches and hoe’s, doest go on into the 5th chapter of oneflapdown77.
And thusly anon, The Flavor Nation relished, mustarded, garlic fried, catsuped and continued. The torch, summoned by Big Flavor was to pertain through the mighty apostoles Pawlie, Chuck, Snarkk, Dirt, Chi, Twin, Ewisco,Zumie, Dennis, Willie D, Bozo and—TedSpe—
TedSpe?—

Oh shitteth…..

Watching the NY game last night, is the Yankees LU with CC on the mound (plus jeter tex cano a-rod granderson swish and ibanez) the most expensive collection of 9 guys on the field at one time? Wonder what Stewart feels like—outhouse (of fresno) to the penthouse?

    Weatherproof games: Cardinals-Marlins, Padres-Astros and Athletics-Mariners

Daytime thunderstorms in the northeast won’t last long enough to affect Indians-Yankees or Pirates-Phillies, but those rains will move right into Boston in the early evening and aren’t expected to clear up until after 9 p.m. That could delay, or possibly even cause a postponement for Blue Jays-Red Sox. Temperatures will hit triple-digits for Tigers-Rangers, but the rest of Monday’s action will be played in the high-70s and low-80s.

Another excellent job by the stable. The barn is on fire. I can almost sense Flav’s relief at having the daily burden lifted.

It is very apparent to me that I am just not cut out to be part of the stable. If you need proof, go look at my 3:03 PM post yesterday, which is exactly the type of thing I would put up there for my thread…

nothing wrong with that-it is a dumb look, and an entire thread could easily be built around dumb stadium looks. I don’t care where you put a stadium, but why does it need a pool? You remember I’m sure the “terrace” in Crosley Field…one of the weirdest things I ever heard of, when hodges and simmons used to describe mays or vada pinson going back to catch a ball there I had no idea wtf they meant.

Nothing wrong with running casilla out there yesterday, but….no doubt in my mind romo is the single most effective guy in the pen. He’s pitched 20 innings so far in 70 odd games, and his numbers are just as good as last year. Nobody hits this guy and his WHIP, just like last year, is 0.8. He gave up 2 bombs in 48 innings last year, and he’s given up 1 so far in his 20.
i realize how difficult pen mgmt is these days with all the emphasis on defined roles and when you use your closer and set up guys. In the most stressful situations, which might be in 7th/8th with RISP as opposed to 9th up by a 2-3 runs, I want my best guy in there–and imo that’s not casilla or hensley or lopez or affeldt. And if I need that guy to get me 3 or 4 outs, then I’d leave him in there to do it.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 25, 2012 at 9:25 am

Well, it’s not going to be Romo as closer- at least now.Bochy has confirmed that Casilla is the man- and he *was * 20 for 21 for until yesterday. Santiago will have the day off and then back in there, as it should be. The thing is, the set up guy(s) already have just as important a job as the closer, I see no reason to move Romo out of a job he’s excelled at. Fact is- getting to the ninth with a lead is what’s most important- and what Bochy does with Romo, Lopez, et al. to get ’em there with a lead-works.

    Scufflers: Panda, Pagan, Blanco, Crawford
    Non-Scufflers: Posey, Theriot, Belt
    Mini-Scuffler: Melky

I’d say the biggest concerns are Pablo and Gregor. Panda seems to be mostly hittling flares the other way, only 2

doubles, 0 HR since his return. Blanco has had brief resurgeances, but .213 the last month, .275 BA doesn’t cut it.
In fact, the OF situation for next year could be dire. I wouldn’t count on them re-signing Melky or Pagan, leaving an iffy Blanco if he doesn’t fire it back up, and perhaps Old Faithful Nate, our emergency date if the pretty girl stands us up . The news that Brown is picking it up is welcome, indeed. He could be the CFer ready or not.

Romo already said that he almost had a heart attack when he came in as a closer last year. I don’t thik he’s going to be the guy. Casilla had a bad 2 days. Maybe it’s Crumbledome, maybe it’s trying too hard against his old team, or maybe it’s sunspots, but he’s the guy for the foreseeable future.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on June 25, 2012 at 9:42 am

      First, thanks, gents.
Bruce Jenkins a week or three back dangled the wacky idea that Romo should go to the AS Game as a closer despite not actually performing in that role during the regular season just to ensure a NL win for the WS. The idea has its merits but…not gonna happen

  14. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 25, 2012 at 9:43 am

  15. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 25, 2012 at 9:55 am

We’ll see going forward but as of now Casilla is 20 of 22 and Sergio isn’t going to better that. Conversely, Casilla isn’t going to better Romo’s record as the set up guy. Unless Casilla goes feet up, the team would not be better with Romo closing.

    • willieD's avatar willieD said, on June 25, 2012 at 8:14 pm

I”m not talking about romo closing, unless he’s brought in to pitch in the 8th with a couple guys on and gets out of it. Then, close game, I’d leave him in. Lopez to me is strictly loogy, whereas romo can get anyone out from either side and he is not gonna give up the long ball that beats you. Hensley has been good, but he’s not in romo class. If he is in a close game, I’d use him to get more guys out and go longer as long as his spot in the LU doesn’t show up. Then maybe you don’t even need casilla.

4 or 5 years ago I was playing softball at the field on El Camino in palo Alto–across the street is a Bloomingdale’s– I’m a switch hitter but when you bat left handed and hit one over the HUGE fence out in right field (it’s got to be 40 feet high) it’s a homerun and the ball bounces through traffic and into stanford shopping center—the few of us who could hit it over that monster fence would call our bombs “going shoppin'”
Anyway, as I said, it’s a monster shot, I probably hit 5 home runs as a left hander in 10 years (whereas I probably hit 30 to left field batting right handed).
So, back to the story, it was 4 or 5 years ago, I was batting lefty and got a hold of one, it sailed over the big fence out in right field but instead of bouncing a few times through traffic and ending up in the shopping mall parking lot it landed with a crash on to the hood of a Mercedes traveling north along El Camino. The car slammed on it’s breaks and ultimately pulled into our softball field parking lot. I went over, apologized, he was pretty pissed but I gave him my contact info and said I’d hook him up with someone at the city to work with him on re-imbursing him for whatever it cost to fix the hood of his car.
I went into the city rec dept the next day and was told there’s no way in hell that the city was going to pay to fix the guy’s car. I began doing a slow burn with my voice rising as the conversation got contentious, ultimately ending with the city employee and a few supervisors showing me some fine print in the waiver that I’d signed that seemed to indicate this was all my fault.
Needless to say, i was totally pissed off but instead of fighting it I just paid for the hood myself.
I still don’t understand how I was responsible for an accident that only happened because the City failed to build a wall high enough to contain my left handed blasts. I’ve always wondered if I would have won that lawsuit had I brought one against the city.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 25, 2012 at 11:01 am

In my mind? “Going shoppin'” was fucking worth paying for his Mercedes hood. By the by, was it an SLS AMG? That would have even been better. Great story!

Your right to blast a ball as far as you can hit it in a place specifically designated by the local government to do so, in a manner and at a time specifically contemplated by that government’s placement of the facility and authorization of it’s use by ball teams in exchange for a user fee, cannot be waived voluntarily or under compulsion as a condition precedent of said authorized use. Or, you could have just settled for a double…

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 25, 2012 at 11:29 am

The short story is you typically can’t waive your rights to go against somebody or an entity for bad things that happen to you (or the person for whom you signed a waiver) as a result of the negligent acts of that somebody or entity. Against public policy. Were YOU negligent in hitting a home run over the fence just because you were so coordinated and Ruthian? No. Was the city negligent in not expecting monster HR hitters like you to play in those leagues and use that facility, thus negligent in not builidng a higher fence to contain your Ruthian blasts? Maybe, especially if they KNEW before your blast that McCovey wannabees like you had been hitting jacks into the El Camino. Really especially if you or your league had told the city about those prior jacks. But, that prior knowledge could have come from anybody. Anyway, you may have had a case. Lawyers always say you may have a case. Well, almost always. That’ll be $300 pleez…

Pablo’s shot was the important AB in the inning. I don’t think he’s pulled one hard like that since he’s been back.

Just got back from a minor league game, and it’s a 4-0 lead — make it 5-0 . . . 6-0 . . . 7-0! Saw the Lakewood BlueClaws (Phillies) vs. the West Virginia Power (Pirates), single-A ball. Lakewood won 6-4. West Virginia showed little evidence of its moniker; it’s doubtful anyone from either team will be making a run at the Bauman Award. It was Christie Rampone bobblehead night, a local athlete who’s been on the US women’s soccer team since the late 90s and is now the captain. There’s a slim connection here: Christie played soccer and hoops at Monmouth University, which is where Ed Halicki played baseball and hoops.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 25, 2012 at 8:12 pm

      91-5

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 25, 2012 at 8:14 pm

That’s with 6 runs or more. Of course, everyone is 91-5 with 6 runs 😉

      • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on June 25, 2012 at 8:19 pm

Thanks Twin…Although i can’t even imagine any pitcher blowing a seven run lead, and to do five times, pretty incredible sucklitude.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 25, 2012 at 8:24 pm

Yeah, he also has 26 no decisions with 6 or more runs. So he’s failed to win 31 times with 6 or more…

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 25, 2012 at 8:48 pm

That was with 6 or more. I’m not worried about tonight, though. The 6 or more numbers are from Baseball Reference

Thanks. Go re-read your 8:44pm, it was incorrect. Instead of worrying about a few Zito starts from years ago you “87 precent-ers” might was to crunch the numbers on how Timmy is gonna shave 2 pts off his ERA to catch Zito by year’s end…
