A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Let us Pray

Posted in Uncategorized by ewisco on June 27, 2012

For my sermon today, I shall consult the Book of Armaments, Chapter 2, Verses nine to twenty one:

And St. Attila raised his Hand Grenade up on high saying, “O Lord, Bless this thy Holy Hand Grenade that with it thou mayest blow the Dodgers to tiny bits, in thy mercy.”

Wait, wrong sermon.  Let’s try the Book of Numbers.

As we approach the “half way” mark, the only numbers that count at this point are:  42-33, 1game out of first.   Other numbers can be used for illustrative purposes but those two (three?) are the only ones that really matter.  Numbers like:  5th in the NL in hitting, 11th in OPS, 4th in ERA (3rd amongst starters, 5th amongst bullpen), last (or first depending on how you look at it, either way, bad) in errors, 12th in double plays etc. can be used to parse the 42-33 but are in a way irrelevant to the ones that matter.  They are right where they need to be in the two that count:  42-33, 1 game out.  The thing I love best about THIS team is that they haven’t hit their stride yet.  Pablo out, Posey needing off days, batting order in flux (until now), starters struggling who shouldn’t, relievers coughing up hairballs on occasion etc.  This is exactly what I want.  I want to see struggle, harsh lessons learned, and failure.  But I want to see that early.  I want to see them grow, mesh and begin to dominate as the season progresses.  THIS team needs to find it’s own mojo, it’s own credo, it’s own thong.  The parts are all there.  Like every team, they are a couple of key injuries away from crashing and burning.  But from where I sit (type?), I wouldn’t want to be anybody else.

So, to recap: “First shalt thou take out the Holy Thong, then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less.”

I leave the rest as an exercise for the reader.

    Weatherproof games: Athletics-Mariners, Cardinals-Marlins and Padres-Astros

Blue Jays-Red Sox could experience a midgame rain delay during their afternoon tilt, while Nationals-Rockies will likely get hit with thunderstorms early in their evening matchup. Tigers-Rangers will play a night game with temperatures around 95, but Rays-Royals will be taking the field in near-record temperatures eclipsing 100 degrees on Wednesday afternoon.

Most excellent post, ewisco. I agree with all them there numbers, and agree, also agree the cool thing is the team has NOT hit its stride.

I was also thinking this morning that Timmy has to be DYING for a quality game and win. Zito and the boys set the tone with the 8 zip ass-whoopin’ and Vogey (and his wife?) did their part for chapter two. And now, it rests (predominantly) on the shoulders of Big Time Timmy Jim…I want to see that little fucker dominate again. THAT guy is still there…HE is the one who needs to find his mojo (paging Mr. Powers…Mr. Austin Powers).

How sweep would it be to see Timmy handcuff the Bums and smack their sorry butts all the way back to Smell-A!

Not certain any of you are familiar with the Manitou Springs/Colorado Springs area . . . The Waldo Canyon fire has reached the city limits and approx. 30,000 people have been evacuated (I have quite a few friends there). Unbelievable video and pictures of the fire reaching subdivisions. Winds of 65 MPH and 100 degree temperatures are making this fire very difficult to fight. This is only one of several fires going on here (another one started near the city of Boulder) . . . Keep these people in your prayers. Thanks . . .

Yeah, it has been heavy on the news here. Living in the foothills/mountains, I can relate. Hoping that there is relief via the weather, and they can begin to get a handle of the fire before people lose their houses (or lives). Anyone know how to do a rain dance?

Wisc is right–I don’t see any team that looks dominant or scares me in the NL right now, esp LA. Reds? Pirates? Nats? Cards sans Pujols and Berkman? Punchless Phils? The Marlins have fallen apart again, AZ (not playing the cubs this week) gets hammered by Braves….
Props to Mattingly for talking approvingly about crowd at ATT (vs. Oakland) pumping up the Beat LA vibe, calling it “boston-ish.”
I’ve never been to a game down there, but am well aware of what happens at dodger-giants games here. It’s an amazing experience, nothing like it; place is fired up from get go. What is it about LA fans that they just don’t seem to return the favor in kind?
Not referring to the hoodlum types…just in general, you don’t hear the type of anti-SF enthusiasm out of them that you do here in SF when dodgers are in town. Even when bonds was here, it was in Diego that they threw syringes at him.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 27, 2012 at 9:42 am

Yeah, good question Willie. Not sure…I just think it is that whole LA vibe…and THAT is just one more reason I cannot stand to be down there. LA could break off and fll into the ocean for all I care…I would not miss it at all.

I guess scary is a better word (tho I have no idea what was so evil about cody ross)..hopefully by now even the reps know someone that alienating to so many millions of americans cannot be elected. Not trying to one up anyone, but it always amazed me that the area with the most fervent “christians” of america inflicted some of the worst cruelties in our history on another race and fought so hard to deny them basic human rights.
Then again, xenophobia has been a part of america for a long time, with the newest immigrants usually bearing the worst brunt of it from the newer ones before them. “No Irish need apply.”

I’m totally ashamed that as a life long democrat, union supporter, and man of principle…that I’d do Ms. Palin in a heartbeat. There was a joke during the 2008 campaign- evidently many people got E-Mails that purportedly contained nude photos of Sara Palin-they were warned not to open- it was a virus. Similarly, E-Mails went out that were said to contain nude pics of Hillary Clinton- we were also warned not to open these- they really *were* nude photos of Hillary…

Vogletron is a beast. These guys can’t hit—I think Timmy could throw a shutout today—which would be great on so many levels. Very nice job, Wisco. But you know what I have to say.

    Fuck the Book of Numbers . . . !

The Cody Ross thing is just too funny. Ballplayers in general ARE dirbags. You think Pat the Bat got his nickname becasue he was a good hitter? Uh, no. Zito and Wilson and their video-phoned bar-hopping stints, Juan Uribe’s 3,200 pics of him with biscuits, and about 80% of the players out there, single or married, are on the hunt. Ross is an easy target because he’s gone.

But exorcising Ross’ dirty spirit out of the locker room is pretty much voodoo in my book. That being said, bring on the chicken blood! It’s working . . . !

Solid thread, Ewisco. Without fail so far the Flappers are doing just fine in the thread writing department. BF has tended the crew and now they’re all flapping their wings alone successfully. Two shutouts in a row of LA is beyond a dream result, that’s just fantastic, even with this LA squad obviously on the batting skids for most of the last fortnight. I was at an establishment last night seeing some of the game on a big screen, and what hit me strangely hard was the “blueness” of the Dodgers’ road uniforms. Not that I hadn’t noticed it on a superficial level the last 40+ years. But, there are no other team colors like those. That blue is just really, really blue. You recognize that uniform’s colors in a second. The blueness seems especially stark when one of ’ems standing next to our guys, say at first base. I don’t think I’m committing sacrilege by saying those are damn nice looking unis, even for the eternal evil ones. The Giants home unis are OK, I don’t know how to improve them, but I’d be open for suggestions. Road Giants unis I like are the older versions with the script SF on the side, which they wore at least once earlier this season. My most favorite unis are the Cardinals. The home whites with that red and the birds on the bat — a damn fine mix of color, sport, and mascot. After last night’s performance, Vogy must have gotten a rousing wifely and deeply, deeply spiritual reception when he got home. Since it worked last night, I only hope Mrs. Vogy overcomes whatever problems she has with Timmeh’s lifestyle and puts more quarters in her prayer phone today for that little heathen…

I had hoped they were finished with Posey playing first base. It’s not a rest for him, it downgrades two positions defensively, and Belt is better offensively than Sanchez. Plus we have two HRs against Babs ( of current players) and Belt has one of them.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on June 27, 2012 at 12:16 pm

Michael – I don’t think they see it as “rest” for Buster. He actually did get a day off the other day, and Bochy said that playing 1B was not a day off…that he needed a “true day off.” Belt has been great, but he needs a puff every now and then, too (as do they all). So I don’t think this has anything to do witth “resting Posey.”

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 27, 2012 at 12:48 pm

He’s playing for 1st place in the division, it’s not even July, and he’s playing out the string? Way to gut it out, Andre

  38. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 27, 2012 at 1:14 pm

Believe it or not, getting hit with a 63 MPH fastball hurts. In the right spot it could kill you.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 27, 2012 at 1:33 pm

Oh, spare me, Mike. It was a noodle curveball that Zits hit him with.

Now he takes himself out of the game after a slide?

Oh, yeah, guys can kill themselves sliding into 2nd.

I like MacDog’s logic on the lineup (the part about it is Belt’s turn)
a freakin’ Wednesday day game and a full house in what appears to be perfect weather.
would be hard for a fan like me to concentrate on the game

The AB to Uribe, with 2 on ,was the situation where many have criticized Bochy for leaving Tim in-and I’ve pointed out that you don’t get your ace back by treating him like a rookie.
