A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

You Say What?

Posted in Uncategorized by chipower9 on July 31, 2012

Okay Flappers, over the past couple of days (probably weeks), we have beat to death what the Giants should do with their line-up. We have discussed ad nauseam who they should trade and for whom. And a couple of days ago, we even had a discussion thread on the Olympics. (I was out and missed that one, so I’ll get my two-cents in now…I dig the Olympics!)

The non-waiver trade deadline in now only hours away. Sabes and crew have been relatively quiet (lots of rumors…little action). We know “what” they want to add, but Marco Scutaro (for Charlie Culberson) has been the sole trade to date. The Bums have added HanRam and Brandon League, and the latest is that Shane Victorino will slip into a uni of the Hated Blue today. With that, I ask you to turn your attention to yet another topic and offer your profound thoughts (as only a Flapper can).

So, regardless of whether the team signs a bat (Hunter Pence anyone), or a closer, or even if Sabes does nothing and the Giants stay as they are, what do you see as the top three (or say up to five) things that are most critical for the Giants to make the playoffs? And if you can list them in priority order, go for it.

My thoughts (not necessarily in ranked order):

  • Pablo must return ASAP, stay healthy, and continue to be a force in the middle of the line-up.
  • Blanco, Pagan, and any of the other regulars who have scuffled of late must get back to being consistently productive and stay that way. Granted, players can go through short spells, but I think the regulars must consistently bring it (think key base hit with RISP).
  • The bench must contribute. Nate, Arias, Huff…whoever the hell it is, we need some regular production from our bench (think 2010 and Pat the Bat, Ross or Renteria). It has been so pathetic of late that I almost always cringe any time the Giants bring up a pinch hitter.
  • Tim and Zito must pitch somewhere around .500, collectively, or better.
  • The bullpen has to be “NAILS!” Shit like we saw from Casilla last night just won’t cut it, and Romo has struggled of late.

I purposely left out the other starters, because I will be very surprised if those three do not continue to contribute as they have to date, and also “team health” because that is a given…the team needs to stay healthy.

And You Say What?!

Can’t argue with your main points Chi. Sandoval coming off the DL and Lincecum returning to form should get the club going in the right direction. Hairston switching clubhouses when the Mets leave town wouldn’t be bad either.

Funny that papa and bip on the post game both suggested Hairston, which should be reason enough right there for that to get vetoed, but whatever. I’d be afraid if we got the guy he’d turn out like Mark Portugal did.
Speaking of whom, I’m reminded of him every time I see Bartolo colon pitch. Minus the stache and plus who knows how many pounds, he has that same annoying smirk on his face–“I know exactly how I’m gonna get you out, and you don’t.”

Nice post my brother. You basically took the words out of my mouth.
I don’t know what’s worse: seeing a hobo sit in his own defacation or watching Casilla pitch. It’s a crapshoot (no pun intended).
Perhaps Sabean needs to take a page out of Beane’s Moneyball tactics. The clock is indeed ticking on the trade deadline, so while the Dodgers are grabbing everything off the sale rack, the Giants might be relegated to the bargain basement. Still, 60 games left, but I think there is a sense of urgency to get their shit together now. I’m not ready for football yet.

Hanley cost LA a young starter, is owed a shitload of money, and after an 0-4 last night is still batting .249. League hasn’t pitched very well in a pitcher friendly yard like Seattle, so he’s a yawn. The last Ramirez signing by LA didn’t end well for them either when they gave Manny $45 mil for 2 years he couldn’t fulfill.
I didn’t hear all of it, but I liked Kruk’s rant from yesterday morning. Out of the break they were playing winning baseball, and lately they’ve been playing anything but. SPs have gotten the team behind early, and the pen guys coughed up 6 runs last night. Just way too many mistakes on the bases, in the field and at the plate equals losing baseball. Time for the 25 guys here and now to pull your heads out and get back to doing all the little things that added up to how you got into first place, and that will help you stay there. And don’t look at Sabean, look in the mirror.

Spot on willed and nice essay chi

in rumour deals: while teams that have checked in on Pence believe the Phillies will wait until the offseason.
The Phillies’ asking price on Victorino is outrageous, Yankees will probably learn early today about severity of Teixeira’s injury, and then will decide whether to pursue Overbay/Wigginton

so it looks like our prospective targets are dwindling
fans on MTR think Pence, Dempster and Lee will go in the next 7 hours.

this latest losing streak makes twice in recent memory that my team has been playing hot only to go cold.
My worry is will fans continue to support management while they don’t support them. Is cha-ching all management wants to hear? The current run of sell-outs was 37.8% on Bow-Tie and the WS win. That could change quick and leave the true orange and black fans grumpier than Denny after a bone-head play.

I said it in May and started to see improvement. Now we are back to May. This team is going nowhere with the way they play defense. Here is my top 5:
    1- Play better defense.
    2- Play better defense.
    3- Play better defense.
    4- Play better defense.
    4- Play better defense.
Since we are going nowhere with this defense it is time to develop these youngsters instead of trading away prospects. Let this team learn to win, or not win. I just can’t see a team that is this bad on defense win it all. No possible way. You can not give away outs and win.

Identify who you think is in our future and develop them to win. Oh yes, and play defense.

This look in the mirror stuff is a crock.
Melky, Posey and Panda can look in the mirror and see good MLB players.
The rest of the starters and bench guys look in the mirror and see what they see — average to below average players. Over the course of the season, you play to what’s in the mirror…

  10. paulinasia's avatar paulinasia said, on July 31, 2012 at 9:29 am

I don’t usually go off on this team here, I think most of you would agree. But I’m sorry… I’m kinda pissed at the moment. 5 fucking losses in a row, at home, when they were about to achieve dominance in their division? Oops…. Sounds like last year. Unacceptable.

They need to do what they were doing when they made their move into first. As others have said here about looking in the mirror, yes, and I paraphrase from one of my earlier posts, the players just need to do their f-ing jobs. And Bochy needs to change channels on wherever his muse is; he seemed to be tuned in before, but lately he seems to me to have some kind of wtf look with his lineups. IMO. Talking Heads said about 35 years ago “cut back the weakness, reinforce what is strong.” Huff? I can’t believe sound minds in management actually thought that was a good (or humane or politically correct) move. Good god, man, retire already, because we all still love you, it’s ok. And, I’m sure someone here can explain to me why Bochy continues to pinch-run Eli for Buster in late innings, going for the win, I guess, but also taking out your de facto captain if the game goes on, which it seems to usually do… And wtf did Blanco do to end up in the Belt doghouse (besides having his average slump, I understand that, good excuse, but the f-ing guy is your leadoff hitter and excellent outfielder and pretty much sparked the team into contention [arguable, but there it is], let him play, man). The 1B hand-job the team has given itself has been discussed ad nauseum here. The pieces are there, and the missing ones are available, fuck this ownership tightwad crap… I think this next handful of hours is rather important for this team’s chances this year, even more so than other years. And in case you can’t tell, even if you don’t care, I will be extremely disappointed if there’s no news today. Tonight, here. But I probably won’t be up late enough to know.. so…. good luck today, gents! I probably won’t be so pissed off tomorrow….. smiley face. Maybe.

If it’s Tommy Joseph that goes to the Phils, it’ll lay to rest (somewhat) the erroneous notion that the Giants want to move Buster to 1st base. I said earlier that if anything, these catcher prospects will give them trading chips.

The point being, it SHOULD be easier to find a good 1st baseman than it is to find a good catcher. Buster is an all star catcher. He’s a fair to poor 1st baseman. He’s staying put.

I have heard that this line was taken from a newspaper. It was part of a story describing how the Blackburn council sent someone out to identify all the potholes in the city’s roads. This they did, but the report cost so much that, having identified all the potholes, they couldn’t afford to repair any of them.

For the bums and people calling them the yankmees of the west, they will have to get on top of their ingo with things like tv rights, ticket prices, the ravine as a long term home, etc. and with the debt LA now has that is a long row to hoe.

If we do in fact get Pence, its gonna be interesting to see how CF plays out. I like the Pagan/Blanco platoon idea. I love Crazy Horse, but if he bitches one syllable about reduced playing time I hope Bochy goes off on him ala Jim Leyland on a young Barry B. Like I said the other night, Bochy has given CH all kinds of rope this year and he needs to deal with this like a pro.

I must share about a possible bad omen that I encountered last night in the Ocean Beach area of San Diego. (I always thought “Ocean Beach” was a lame name for a beach, but I’l leave that for another time) It was around 5pm and I was walking toward the beach heading out for a swim, when I passed several newspaper machines on the sidewalk. I almost can’t believe I really saw this, but plastered on the side of one of the machines was a sticker version of a Topps 1972 “In Action” baseball card. The sticker was larger than a baseball card, maybe 3 x 5 or 4 x 6. Now, that was the first year I collected BB cards and I still have several hundred cards from that year, but I never knew these stickers existed. Plus who knows how long that sticker has been on that machine. The real kicker though is who the player is depicted on the card. He represents possibly the worst TRADE ever made in the history of the SFG franchise. I bet Loo could guess who I am referring to in one guess—-2 or 3 tops.
Loo or anyone else—-do you want to take a crack at who was on the card? It is really quite disturbing that I saw this on the eve of the trade deadline.

    Pawlie, in John’s own words:
“I was writing the song with the Daily Mail propped up in front of me on the piano, I had it open at their News In Brief, or Far and Near, whatever they call it. There was a paragraph about 4,000 holes in Blackburn, Lancaster, being discovered and there was still one word missing in that verse when we came to record. I knew the line had to go ‘Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.’ It was a nonsense verse really, but for some reason I couldn’t think of the verb. What did the holes do to the Albert Hall? It was Terry (Doran) who said ‘fill’ the Albert Hall.” John Lennon

File this under verbs are important

OK, I had the right prospect in the deal. I’d rather have Willingham than Pence but c’est lavie the Twins were not going to move him. Legaue went for a lot less than Belt, surprised that we did not get him. I think we still need a bullpen rightie…

We ended up shooting pool at this biker bar in OB that has a bit of an edge to it. 2 guys were playing on the table next to us and were initially giving us kind of a “what the fuck are you guys doing in here” looks. We finally broke the ice with them a bit when one of them put a bunch of Faith No More on the digital jukebox and I was able to discuss Faith No More with them as I used to listen to some of their stuff. I ended up putting some songs that went over well in the bar—“Nighttrain” by GnR and some Zeppelin and other stuff. Later, I ended up at the jukebox just as the last song ran out and it was silent in the bar and it was all on me to choose the next tune. I’d had a few by that point and was also anxious to get back to my pool game. I couldn’t find anything and went into panic mode and picked “Rockstar” by Nickelback—-a song that I must confess I like quite a bit, but not a good choice for the clientele in that bar. I caught all kinds of shit and the good will I had built up around the pool tables was gone. Later someone played some INXS and I tried to throw that person under the bus, but it was made clear to me that Nickelback was still the worst call of the night.

He had a 12 pack of Old Mikwaukee Talls arranged in a semi-circle around him. He told us his story of wrestling with a Mako shark during the last high tide.
