A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Trying to Let The Melky Misery Go……

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 16, 2012

Pfffttttt…….I’m disgusted with this entire episode. Melky’s silence after Bagg’s issued that public apology still angers me the most. I know other things should, like his suspension and the lying and the fake stats and stuff…..But reading Baggs’ thread on 7/28 made me almost turn on the guy—one of my favorite Bay Area writers of all time—- and Melky just sat there in his little rat-hole, ignoring the apology, darting his eyes back and forth while he prayed for that *miracle ticket* out of this drug-induced mess….I guess when you’re a cheater and a liar you don’t give a sh!t about people that play the game by the rules—people that are living in a society– I wonder if Melky laughed out loud when he read Bagg’s public apology to him? To me, it was one or the other: “darting eyes” or “LQTHPS” (laugh quietly to his pathetic self). Maybe both. I can’t even think about this without wanting to spit in his face….And this has NOTHING to do with Barry or The PED Era or anything. Barry Bonds NEVER fucked his team like this.  No player of Melky’s status has done this to his team at this point in the season. Manny-Gate isn’t even a close comparision. He came to the Dodgers as an established star. He was just *Manny being Manny….” and he got popped.

The WORST part of all of this is that I got fucking tricked into believing something super-cool was happening. I knew in my brain that a guy on his 4th different team in 4 years who is leading the league in hits and runs and who’s hitting .350 and carrying around an all-star MVP trophy couldn’t really be happening.  But I still talked myself into believing it was real. I checked his near-.400 BABIP and dismissed it as an aberration. This was real.  I reveled and lol’d in the fall-out of us trading the guy with the worst ERA in the American League for the guy with the most hits in the National League.  THIS WAS FUCKING REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And then to find out it was all fake bullshit?  It was so deflating. And it made me feel like a dumb ass……
But I’m getting over it. It’s just one guy. And if there’s one thing I am certain of it’s that I care more about the following than any one person: THE San Francisco Giants. And just typing that has already started the healing process……..

The sadly ironic and ultimately tragic thing is…..the stuff works!! Players and especially borderline players can look at Melky’s incredible career turnaround, and many will be tempted still to try to beat the system. It’s a big quandary for baseball, and an ongoing challenge into the future.

What was he supposed to do once Baggs apologized—come clean and admit he had been using PEDs after all—even though he just saw Braun get a get-out-jail-free card?
The thing that really sucks is that we have arguably the worst outfield depth in all of MLB. Other teams can plug in somebody pretty solid and we have guys like Justin Christian. I hope Sabean is scouring the waiver wire like a son of a bitch. How old is Milton Bradley these days???? Lets make this Casper Wells thing happen! Frenchy Francouer anyone???

Well, even after all the recent hullabaloo between myself and the Flap fantasy game…one thing remains the same…THE ODDS. And the odds now say after Melky’s suspension it’s “My” Dodgers -200 and our Giants +110 to win the NL West from this day forward.

I wish I had something insightful to say about those odds. Best I wait for a Bob Baffert runner to beat the odds…

My sentiments along those lines, BF. I laugh when I hear these dudes on talk radio call in and say they KNEW Melky was dirty a coupla months ago, and told their Uncle or their bookie or whatever. Really? This guy had 200 hits last year in KC, and he wasn’t popped then. He must have been tested last year. He doesn’t have bulging Canseco muscles, at least that we can see. He doesn’t hit monster HRs into the Cove. He doesn’t have a dome the size of a Fukushima Crenshaw melon. I’m as jaded as the next guy on reality in baseball, but I admit, it was a gut punch. I didn’t even get it when Baggs came out with that rumor, and he fuckin APOLOGIZED. I figured, yeah, this is just some Twittershit. But, no. As if I had to learn all over again after Barry, and FP Santageroid and Eliazer Whoever and Estalella, etc, etc. Any or all of these dudes on the Giants and every friggin team could be using. So, I’m not going to sweat it anymore. If Fuckin Buster has his wife shoot up his ass with Dianobol and an HGH chaser while breast feeding their twins, I don’t give a crap. Just play ball…

You really believe he was clean last year? It’s easy to avoid positive urine tests for testestorone, he just fucked up this year. And how many users have the BarryDome? I’m surprised that anyone is surprised- I’m not saying I knew it- but I can’t believe this surprises anyone.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 16, 2012 at 11:44 pm

I don’t know whether he was clean. Nobody does. But, he didn’t fail a test, apparently. I AM surprised he’s dirty, not shocked, but surprised. If you weren’t surprised, good on you. You’re more of a doomer than I. But, as I said, no more. Now, I wouldn’t be surprised if Buster is using to recover from his injury. It’s the way of the world. I don’t have to like it, but that’s the way it is, as Cronkite used to say…

Now that we are PAST this loss of a player, a moment of silent refection. Place your hands on the monitor and say, “Amen!” Raise a glass of your best brandy and say goodbye to Melk (even if you drink your brandy with milk). Let bygones be bygones and let your fears and doubts, your sadness and disappointment disappear into the distance.
[The lights dim] with deep slow breaths we breath in ‘Your San Francisco Giants’ and breath out ‘Pummel the Padres’ at the appointed hour we turn as one to CSNBA and say, “Play Ball”.

We know that at least 200 unnamed players have tested positive, no shit we should assume nearly all have used-only the idiots get caught anymore. Frankly, I’ve had a hard time caring about baseball a lot lately- and lying, sniveling lowlifes like The Milker don’t help. He could have come clean when it actually took some spine to do so and we’d have him for the last month of the season and at least know that for once a user faced up to it before they busted him with the bloody knife in his hand. GNight, maybe I’ll try to post some bullshit during the Bum series.

I’m all in with zum’s first post. In the DR, where roids are legal, you think some skinny 15 yr old that looks just like Sammy Sosa did at his age thinks twice about the consequences when he sees the results—Sammy in a manse with maids servants big cars and babes? Or that a girl soccer player trying to come back off ACL surgery doesn’t want whatever masking agent Hope Solo got “admonished” for using prior to her Olympic performance?
The other sad part is, the athletes are turning themselves into lab rats. I worked in pharmacies while going through college, and it’s amazing the different effects the same drug will have on different people and their bodies. In the case of simple antihistamines, the results can be diametrically opposite. There is no way for Melk to know how his body will react 2-5-10 years from now; these guys (and gals) are human guinea pigs.

well, I doubt the giants can make a fred mcgriff type of deal, and josh hamilton isn’t coming here off waivers. August 2010, Lincecum and a few others weren’t playing well but turned it around nicely after some choice words from Sabes. And that’s my message. LA thinks the race is “ova”…bullshit.
I don’t care who plays LF–no one expects Blanco to hit .350 and be AS game MVP–but everyone can field, hit run and pitch better. And you need to in order to finish the stretch drive on top, not just SF but every team is feeling the same way. Man, after what went down at the end of last year, anything can happen. No way I ever once believed the Cards were the best team in baseball.
Edd’s 10:52 from last night should be the mantra–stop the *&$#@?* whining and play ball!

Dav, I think there’s enough anecdotal evidence that at least being somewhat prudent about taking steroids isn’t going to do too much long term damage. You have to be stupid about it to screw yourself up badly.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 17, 2012 at 11:09 am

Many steroids cause the adrenal glands to cease functioning- when the drug is withdrawn, the adrenals are *supposed* to resume their normal function. That doesn’t always happen, which can lead to adrenal insuffuiciency, not always fixable. Kinda funny- the drug Melky got busted for is one I get regularly to try to combat my adrenal insufficiency- I may now face lifetime steroid “maintenance” with hydrocortiosone. Fact is, baseball always treated this as a PR issue, not a health issue. I’m not saying that all steroids behave the same, but they do all share some similar and negative side effects- and supression of the immune system is one of those shared traits.

I’ve been on them for a year now and my sister was on them for twenty years. They caused all sorts of problems. I listened to an interview with Conti on how easy it was for guys to beat testosterone so no telling how long Melky was on them. He said you had to be an idiot to get caught so no telling how many others are doing it too. I think it’s like the war on drugs, no solutions so may as well let ’em all take them. Weird for sports but seems that’s what football does.

This gist of Conte’s spiel is this:

“What these guys are doing is using fast-acting testosterone, creams, gels, patches and micro-dose injections,” Conte says. “They put this stuff on after a game, let it circulate in their blood stream, and eight hours later, it’s out of their system when they take a drug test. It’s so simple.

“There’s such a loophole, you really wonder if Major League Baseball has a genuine interest in stopping these guys.”

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 17, 2012 at 1:07 pm

OK, if the stuff gets out of the system so fast, how can it be so helpful? You take it every day, every other day while you’re working out? I don’t know the ins/outs of the drug test program, but I assume Conte knows it, so that he’s sure no testing can go on at players’ homes or on the road in off hours? or late at night?…

Kieachnick hasn’t played since late May so he’s not an internal option. Peguero is still considered a Brown level prosect by many, and he’s made progress progress- but 14 BB in 400+ AB? He might be ready for 5th OFer status-next year. Brown seems to be a late inning guy if he gets a call- he’s not ready to replace Blanco, Pagan, or Pence. Nady is hitting .118 in Fresno. Gregor is the best bet…and let’s not forget my AAA shortstop and that disobedient first baseman- both hittng over .400 this month…Scutaro is always solid, there’s Buster and and the Panda- this is a solid line up…despite alll the uproar-pen is 75% save percentage this year, tied for 3rd in NL- Bochy can handle this. The Hacker call up is a bit distressing- say what they will- he’s the 6th starter- just hope we get .500 ball from Tim and Zits, and don’t need him…

I agree with Twin (made this point over the last couple of weeks, too) that if they can get .500 out of Tim/Zito, and they can shore up the bullpen (no, Hacker does not count, and thank goodness Otero was sent back before he even got here), these are key for success down the stretch. Buster, Pablo, Pence, etc. all need to do what they are expected to do. Also agree that Blanco is the best option right now. Hopefully Sabean can pull some magic and get another stick (Ross back in the Orange and Black???)…

  29. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2012 at 1:05 pm

I’m thinking just about anything would be better than Blanco at this point. He’s batting sizzling .182 in July/Aug.

He was 0 for August til the 15th. Now he’s at an impressive .125.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 17, 2012 at 1:14 pm

I’m afraid Blanco has returned to what he was/is, a career journeyman at best. I thought earlier he just needed more rest, not being used to playing so much. Now, it looks like he’s just playing to his pre-season “who’s that?” status. You can’t have a regular OFer hitting below .200 on an ongoing basis, and he’s not taking many walks anymore. You just can’t do that and expect a good outcome. If their minor leagues weren’t such a desert of ready talent, they could tap somebody to at least be respectable in the position. They’ve got to keep scouring the waiver wire, and that’s not a good position to be in…

So who is that “anybody”? Gregor has at least shown he *can* do it, and his last game was encouraging- LF depth chart now is probably Gregor, Scutaro, then Christian, with Belt as the last try…and don’t forget the Huffer…
I think Gregor has this weekend to show something. I think the feeling is that Scutaro would be OK anywhere but short relief…OK, I’m pooped, see ya Monday.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 17, 2012 at 1:24 pm

Well, if Scutaro can catch a fly ball and a frozen rope in the OF, why not try him in LF? He’s been nails at the plate. That keeps all the other decent hitters where they should be. I’m guessing he’s a better option in LF than Belt, but as I said before, I’d even go Belt in LF to get Posey at 1B and Hector in at catcher. Essentially substituting Hector in for Melky’s bat…

  30. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2012 at 1:12 pm

Chi, I’m all for the Giants don’t get me wrong, but there’s a shitload of ifs there. If the pen can settle down. If Timmy can find his mojo. If Zits can keep it up. If Pence can find his power stroke. If Panda can get back on the beam. If they can make up for the guy with the most hits in the majors.

The truth of the matter is the pen has been shakey lately. Timmy sucks balls right now. Zito is a highwire act that can turn on a dime. The offense has been hugely inconsistent. All this was true BEFORE Cabrera got the heave-ho.

Throw that into the mix and shit gets a lot tougher. Blanco? Please. I’d get Ross back and pray. At least he parks one every once in a while.

Maybe he was steamed at Melky for being stoopid and getting caught, but that’s not what he said. Anyway, Kruk was all for escalating the penalties for deterrence purposes. I like Timmie’s attitude – “That is crushing, obviously, just to hear that our best hitter’s not going to be in the lineup,” Lincecum said. “But that’s just like a day where they get a day off. You’ve got to approach it that way.”

Giants just need to wrap their head around the fact that Melky gets 50 days off versus one day. 🙂

Can we focus on the situation at hand? Winning ballgames?
It will be the shit when the Giants win the West with no B-Weezy, no Cabrera, no Freddy. No problem.
Looking a little over a month from now, and if the Giants are still in it (which they will be unca_chuck), the Bums have the Nats and Reds on the road, while the Jints have the Rox and Friars at home. Think about that for a while.

Snarkk, good point about Krukow’s hypocrisy on this. Krukow and Kuip have NEVER on the air mentioned or referenced Bonds’ steroid use at all, as far as I can tell. They continue to try to pretend that elephant isn’t in the room. If they’re going to rip Melky, then they should rip Bonds on this issue once in a while, too. Or even once.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 17, 2012 at 2:23 pm

But having said that, Krukow is right about the penalty needing to be stiffened. Make the first offense 100 games. Obviously the 50-game suspension for the first offense is not enough of a deterrant to the players.

Melky emerges as a mental deficient not smart enough to know when to take a piss. Melky deserves all he gets for being stupid. But screw this criminalization of what should teated as a health issue.

Whatever, Panda, Posey Pence, Pitching and a cast of Playoff bound Players. Or something like that.

IMO this is the best LU they can field and while it maybe worse than the ONE day they had Panda, Pence, Melky and Scutaro together, it’s still the second best LU of the year…the season hinges far more on Zito and Lincecum than it does the LU- IMO.

Wednesday, don’t know who is going for LA vs Cain. A dumbfuck hacker, as a matter of fact. So, as the GM, how do you interpret the numbers he put up at KC last year? You either believe the SABR geeks because you are an intelligent GM, or you suspect that he’s up to the PEDS because you’re a cynical SOB, or your as dumbass who still doesn’t fully believe in the fact that baseball is 100% about the statistics.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 17, 2012 at 7:56 pm

James— I think he had a BABIP last year around .330. This year it was around .390 (I don’t feel like looking it up). Now, I wouldn’t have balked at a .330 BABIP but I sure as hell would have at a .390 BABIP (at least in terms of offering him a big, big deal in the off season).
Don’t forget, Sabean unloaded Dirrrrty for him. He could easily have thought Dirrrty was going to continue his slide and found a way to deal him away for something decent (Melky) and emphasize Dirrrrty’s past skills/production.
He gave up almost nothing for Melky. That doesn’t make him a dumb GM for doing so. And there ARE lots of guys taking PED’s out there. Only the dumb ones get caught. Sabean can’t be faulted on this deal.

“Maybe Zumie can recommend me a good book on him.”

No particular book jumps to mind at the moment, but I did read Sparky Lyle’s book “The Bronx Zoo,” and one of the lasting memories of that book is that the Yankees of that time period had a tighter clubhouse than people would imagine from what the media said. And those Yankees did one of the craziest things ever on a regular basis in that clubhouse. They played hockey, hitting a rolled up ball of tape with bats. Lyle said they played all the time, and whacked each other’s shins quite a bit. But he describes a clubhouse that had more camaraderie and laughs than people might have thought.

Did anyone notice the three girls behind the guy that caught the foul ball in the previous half inning?
(left to right) daughter, about 10, next to mom next to grandma and all three dead ringers for each other.

These are the types of pitchers in Fantasy Baseball that make you throw a chair at your Mac or PC. Both your ERA and WHIP are screwed. So glad this fuck isn’t on any of my teams (albeit, the reality is that this guy is waiver wire fodder in fantasy league).
