A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

One Game at a Time

Posted in Uncategorized by eddacker on August 18, 2012

A good result last night and, with the dogers losing in extra innings to the bravess, Your San Francisco Giants are back in first place. We cannot look too far into the future even though it holds those same dogers and bravess.

The near future is all we care about, and there is no sense looking at the past just now.
But of course we will.

The prognosticators have the Friars winning tonight’s game figuring Stults will outpitch our man Barry.

Zito-1-4 with a 4.93 ERA in nine career appearances at Petco Park. He is 4-2 with a 3.15 ERA against NL West teams this year and the lefty is 1-2 with a 7.06 ERA in his last four starts after going 3-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his previous five. Stults has recently started starting and has allowed one run in his past 13 innings. And he has won twice.

As my man yogi has said, ‘great hitting and vice versa’. We certainly saw the Giants do some great hitting last night and we have seen flashes of it all year (I am thinking StL). The current team can score them some runs. The Orange Friday fans last night were FANtastic it was hard to tell when the SD crowd was making noise. I have my peace pipe out and I am already thinking this is the rubber game. A win tonight should get us the sweep with our new ace going tomorrow who got his shit game-of-the-month out of the way against the nats.

The Flapper Nation has already pointed to the schedule as an advantage; especially these next 5 games. I do not think anyone anticipated a blow-out win at petco park being just the thing this team needed to heal from a surprise loss in the lineup. If Zito works it this evening (5:30 start btw) I know a sweep here and a series win in losenges would be the elixer to carry back home against the choppers from atlanta.

Yeah, it is ‘one game at a time’ and a series win is nice, but we are IN a pennant drive, we will want more and there are only 40 games to get it. Go Gigantes!

Melky became a cult hero around town faster than Pablo, and was looking to be a feature that would make the Giants special. You know marketing folks loved him and all the jazzing up they were promoting around him. It’s become a bit comical to watch how they frame these guys but it does lock them in and I don’t think the Giants will touch him again no matter what the price. I was surprised when the Yankees got rid of him, but maybe he was on one of them lists they have with the guys who escaped real scrutiny. Anyway, he sure made a huge impact on the Giants and fans and it’s damned interesting hearing all the theories and predictions. Have to believe Sabean is wheeling and dealing to get rid of the Melky Blues.

“Have to believe Sabean is wheeling and dealing to get rid of the Melky Blues.”

I agree with you Robbie Lou. Flavor’s 7:42am post is also true as well. Nevertheless, I suspect Sabean is working the phones to improve the club for what is going to be a tight, competitive stretch run with the Dodgers and D’backs.

Nice reporting from the “Moat” Edd..
Great start to an important road trip, even if it is against a AAA Padres team. They are the type teams you have to destroy.Cain was great! The team is really coming together offensively (Melky Who?).Get the swagger back boys!
I think the writers are obsessing more about Cabera then the players are.He is in the rear view mirror and they are going forward.
They will be bound and determined to put up even better numbers without Cabera. To prove they can overcome the loss and keep the train rolling. It can be a big motivational factor.

There’s no reason Melky would have been on any list of suspected users when he was a Yankee. Let’s see- 5 years, .269 BA, .716 OPS. Atlanta 1 Yr. .255 BA .671 OPS…Then MAGIC in KC!
    200 hits, 18 HR, .305 BA, .809 OPS
Gosh, I wonder when he started using?

  9. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2012 at 10:47 am

Try to keep in mind that the better we do now, the harder it could be to pick up a significant waiver wire acquistion. As of now the DBacks and Dodgers can both block any attempts, as we did with Ross in 2010..again- they are better now offensively than they were at anytime of the year except ONE game-August 14. As others have also said- forget about Melky, he’s dead to us now. R.I.P.

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat said, on August 18, 2012 at 11:02 am

      • eddacker's avatar eddacker said, on August 18, 2012 at 11:08 am

I don’t think that is what he is saying. The stronger we play the MORE other teams will risk making a move thinking they have to block us. As far as waiver order we are blocked.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2012 at 11:15 am

Not at all- I’m saying win-today, tomorrow, and sweep the Bums. I’m just pointing out reality to those who think we can get a guy just because we want him. You might read the whole post- I LIKE our offense as it is.

I am watching the LLWS playoffs to see how Petaluma is doing. The west team all-stars play their second game tomorrow and it is a double elimination tournament. the “star” of the team is 12 year old manager’s son Bradley Smith. Both coaches have their kids playing 2nd and 3rd. Smith is listed as 6’3″ 185lbs which makes him about 5″ and 50lbs bigger than anyone else on the team. He is also in 1st or 2nd place (or tied) for every category for all teams in the playoffs. This stuff is fun. Curacao just beat Germany 13 – 2. This year the first African team, Uganda, is playing. Check out http://goo.gl/Lnn30 NJ v Oregon 5pm pst should be a good game.

    cheers

Yeah, there are several “little league, esq” divisions. With what we think of as little league (the 13yo (after May 1) and younger) and boys and girls softball, senior league, full sized league and the challenger league.

  11. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 18, 2012 at 11:22 am

Waiver wire is only one avenue available to Sabean. Specifically, August 31, is the trade deadline; and, September 1, active rosters increased from 25 to 40 players. In all likelihood, not much of significance will happen. That’s the reality and I am fine with that because it takes two to “tango.” However, this DOES NOT mean he isn’t trying to improve the team for the stretch run. Regardless, of what happens, I wont blame the Giants for not getting something accomplished . . . This isn’t fantasy league where you have little or no restrictions on trading and waiver wire additions/subtractions.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2012 at 11:27 am

The August 31 trade deadline is part of the waiver wire procedure, it is not a seperate process.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2012 at 11:40 am

People were surprised that the Marlins let Ross go for nothing after we claimed him. What usually would happen, say with Soriano- a team first would have to be awarded the claim, then have until August 31 to complete a trade if they wanted him to be available for postseason play.
September call ups happen every year, win or lose. Except in specified injury circumstances, those players are not available for postseason play.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 18, 2012 at 11:41 am

I know that, i.e., The Major League Baseball (MLB) non-waiver deadline is July 31. My point is that Sabean has other alternatives and I note, that “in all likelihood, not much of significance will happen.”

  12. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on August 18, 2012 at 12:12 pm

You said that in addition to the waver wire, he had other options, “Specifically, August 31, is the trade deadline”… they are the same option, Steve. I know what you wrote and agree with it except for the part that I corrected- the 8-31 trade deadline is not an option in addition to the waiver wire. They cannot complete a trade without going through the waiver wire procedure first. Unless they are the LA Lakers 😉

Yesterday, I saw a prodigious home fun by Giancarlo Stanton. Reliever Josh Roenicke was greeted by by this gargantuan solo homer to center. The ball traveled an estimated 474 feet — against the wind. It was the longest homer of the season at Coors Field, but still short of the record 496-foot blast by the Dodgers’ Mike Piazza on Sept. 26, 1997. By the by, Stanton has hit a homer in each of the five games he’s played at Coors Field this season. The guy’s a monster.

I think it gets down to the Mr.’s 13 and 87- and Hacker. Eric was back in form at Fresno after struggling for a couple months- just 6 ER in last 36 innings. The next two starts are big, I think, for Tim and Barry. If either struggles again, I think they have to ask who is more likely to give the team 6 innings with 3 runs alllowed, or even 5 and 3 ? This is how far it’s gone- Hacker maybe the guy least likely to give them seven innings and one or two runs- but he very well be the least likely to pitch them out of the game. As I said when he came up, I do not think he’s here to replace Loux- he’s here to step in for one of our erstwhile CY winning dudes.Let’s hope Tim and Barry can make it moot…

He fails to ever post the countless times that a closer pitches well in a non-save situation. But luckily, he rested that case and can focus on more important things— like catching Steve in the fantasy league.
Hey Dennis, Beltran has been what I said he is right now: a decent but not great outfielder–those are a dime a dozen. And Cishek chalked up another save last night.

Don’t know how much of the game I’ll be able to see tonight. Instead of camping in this fishing cabin we’ve been in since April, the wife and I are camping in our house. I say camping because the internet and cable TV aren’t hooked up yet. There is a side canal between the two properties, which we cross via a board/plank that I have set up. Going across that may get a little risky as the night goes on, we’ll see.

We have gaters close by (shit Steve, I live close to Alligator river and I’m butt up to the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge) but they don’t come into the canals around the village. I don’t think the water is clean enough for them. The side canal is only about two to three foot deep at the moment and about ten foot wide (again, at the moment). These side canals are mainly used as feeders to the large canal out back which feeds into the bay and Croatan and Roanoke Sounds.

  54. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 18, 2012 at 7:29 pm

Snarkk (to continue from above)– I had an hour to kill before the game and Katie wanted to go swimming so we went down to the club which is about a one minute drive down the hill from our house. There were a surprisingly low number of kids there and I was busy finishing one of the MANY stupid-ass AYSO online courses that they make you take to coach.
So Katie is swimming alone, diving, doing her thing and this dude (about 9 by my raised eye) is talkin’ her up and they’re swimming around, playing games and shit. Her parents, who I didn’t know, were here and seemed cool enough.
Now before I continue, Katie knows my mantra with her. I always tell her, “boys are idiots. Every single one of them. If you want to play with them then don’t complain to me when they play too hard or splash water in your eyes or whatever. That’s what boys do.” But she’s a bit of an athlete and she’ll mix it up in the pool if a game breaks out but there have been many, many times where she comes back crying or complaining about a boy and I say “Kate, we’ve already talked about this: Boys are idiots. Don’t forget it.” Of course, if I see one of them fucking with her beyond normal boy-idiocy, and I have, then I have no problem telling that kid what time it is and addressing the issue with his parent…….
But back to today….So it’s coming up on 5:30 and I tell K8 it’s time to go and she wants to stay for 20-30 minutes to play with this dude. No biggie, she’s 9.5 and we live 1 minute away, it’s a private club, I’ve felt comfortable leaving her alone this Summer for short periods of time (but never to play with some dude). I grant the wish, leave, start the bbq, watch the first half inning and come back to get her. She’s rock solid, showered, dressed and ready to go right when I get there. But this dude is now out of the pool and at the bench with her outside, chatting her up, and I’m like “Um, you must go now.” But he’s super respectful, very verbal and bright, and they’re just talking about a tv show so no biggie. It was cute. As we leave he goes, “Ok Katie, have a great evening.” I whispered to her, “say you too” and she did…….
We’re walking out to the parking lot and I said, “you know, I think that boy might have had a crush on you.” She doesn’t say anything….we’re driving up the hill…still quiet. And then she says, “So daddy, what did you say about a crush?”
And I instantly wanted to kill myself, and that dude, because tonight it started and I’m not going to be able to stop it……..
    🙂

Yep, good story right there. Every day there’s always something new, especially with two of ’em here. My older Snarkette is heading into 8th grade in about ten days, and is in full on young teen mode. She’s sporting near a B cup so far, and I think that’s not stopping until further down the alphabet. The boys will definitely be interested. Dad is exasperating often now, and clearly not with it. It takes work to pry a conversation out of her longer than 30 seconds. The younger one is heading into 6th, in her world Daddy is still OK. It’s going to be an interesting next 5 years. It’ll keep me young, I suppose. And, freekin vigilant….

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 18, 2012 at 7:59 pm

thanks, it’s good to hear fellow *dad* stories on raising a girl. I feel like CHuck is the blog’s Wizard of Oz with this stuff since his girls are now in college. I have a lot of friends and a good network, but I’m in a very unusual situation raising Katie basically alone since her mom, who I haven’t been with in years, is just not into parenting and not cut out to be a mom.
Believe it or not (another thing I was totally bummed about this Summer) Katie has started developing. I didn’t know what to do so I bought her a book, lol. It was actually a great call, it covers everything about female development, and she reads it all the time (usually at night). Apparently there are 5 stages to breast development and Katie has decided she’s in stage 2. I’m going with stage 1 but whatever i bought her a training bra. The other day she blurts out in the car “Dad, I think my breasts just hit stage 3” and as I swerved the car back into the lane I just covered my ears and turned up the Carly Rae…. Hey, maybe that’s why I’m starting to like that shit music. 🙂

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 18, 2012 at 8:22 pm

Dude, you sound like you’re doing more than fine as a single Dad. Thank Keereist I’ve got Mrs. Snarkk, she handles the training bras and related stuff. I’m sure I’d be able to do it if I had to, but I don’t have to. I have actually read a few pages from the “growing up girl” type books. Actually, pretty good stuff. I wish when I was a kid they had “growing up boy” shit I could have read. My dad barely had time to say “good job” when I had a good report card. And, that’s about it. I think your daughter is in good hands growing up…

Flav’s 7:29 and 7:59, as well as snarkk’s 7:49 is partially what makes the Flap so special. Yeah, the baseball is what draws us here, but I stay only because your stories – I am talking all of the Flappers – can be so frickin’ compelling, sad, tragic, angry, funny, or happy . . . Frequently, all those emotions in one story. If someone were to write a book (hint to Pawlie), this blog would be GOLD for a bestseller. My hat’s off to all Flappers and how each of you live your life day in and day out! 🙂

And, amidst all the baseball talk, I feel I must take this moment to say THANK YOU to Craig and Snarkk for affirming that maybe I actually have NOT lost my mind, or manhood, or whatever, for also liking that stupid Call Me Maybe song, and I haven’t even seen the video of which you speak. A handful of my students (young lovely VNmese) made their own video of it and I played it over and over and over… I love those girls, so that helped me like the song, but even now if I hear it play in one of my local bars, I’ll sing quietly along to it with a stupid little smile on my face (which has prompted several of my drinking mates to look at me like I’ve lost it… hey, talk to the hand, I don’t hear you)….

Nice shot, Pence cracked that one right off the wall. more insurance is always good.
I don’t care who it is against, either. The rox won 2 out of 3 in LA before they came to SF, and the Pads spanked the Pirates when they were on the road. The W’s all count one on the good side.

For a twitchy spindly kind of guy, Pence does hit the ball hard. Good to have him. And I must say, agreeing with someone else here today, the Scutaro pickup was kind of quiet and seemingly innocuous, but I’ve been nothing but impressed with what he’s done here so far. That was a much bigger trade deadline pickup than I think it seemed at the time….

I really hate giving up those steals…posey gunned down maybin earlier, who sure as hell runs better than yonder alonso, but he didn’t have a chance because affeldt bounced the breaking ball in the dirt. So a four hopper up the middle, another steal and a soft liner later and it’s a one run game. Which Hensley of all people closes out with a K. And the dodgers can keep their hold on second place.
I’ll give props to black again too. Pads play hard, regardless of how little talent they have.

I’m more bummed about Jacobs. Dixon is shit for short yardage. As we saw tonight. Jacobs looked much better here than he did in NY. James? That sucks as well. He’s fast. Hunter looked good though. As did Gore. Neither were putting ANY weight on their hurt legs. Very bad.

    Dixon is making the cut.

Jacob’s knee has no structural damage to the patellar tendon or the ACL. He may miss a couple games, but he’ll be back this season. James said his injury was a ‘tweak’ to his ankle and he’ll return shortly. Grains of salt should be taken with this, but it appears they dodged a couple more bullets.
