A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Pitching (check), Batting (check), MVP (double check)

Posted in Uncategorized by eddacker on September 22, 2012

I have been a Giants Fan for a very long time, as have most of you. Very little of that time was my team a team clearly at the top, one of the ‘big boys’, winning and playing good baseball. They are, today, a 3 tool team using defence, offence and pitching. With Pablo coming alive the Giants can add the long fly. As Baggs wrote in his post game report last night:
This is what happens when you combine youthful energy, a commanding lead in the NL West and a team that has all the talent and confidence to make a sustained run through the playoffs.
This team is winning and I am a believer and unlike the NY fans, World Series or not, being in the playoffs means you are a top team; two out of three years now. It is still a month until we will know which of those top teams will play in the World Series. I like our chances.

Buster Posey is a big reason this team is winning. He has had extra incentive lately winning the Willie Mac award for most inspirational player on the team this year. The man is a Giant and there is great joy over, first his return from a frightening injury, second his hardball, winning attitude and, of course, third his shot at the MVP. His game is ON. Even Vern and Vera were bringing him food in the clubhouse saying, “a catcher needs to eat to keep his strength up.”

Posey should add another award sometime after the season ends, when baseball has gone quiet and the league MVPs are announced. Here’s why: over 20 HRs | premier backstop | no worse that 2nd in the batting championship | helped his team WIN the division | plays for the best team with the best fans in the best city. What are your thoughts?

P.S. The WC game is on my birthday this year. If any of you were considering gifting me a play-in game ticket I prefer Baltimore or Oaktown. No thanks if it is LA or Philly. Come to think of it East Coast teams mean cheaper air fair, but let me worry about that.

Hopefully there will be some fan memories made in SF this weekend. GET YOUR BLOG ON!

That was not something I liked seeing while working on the clincher thread.

hahaha. It’s like writing an obituary while the dude’s still hanging on, eh?
      I don’t envy you

My understanding is that major newspapers like the NY Times have obits ready for famous and important people. They have to. I love me a good obit. I’ve posted at my own blog about this: one of the most fascinating obits (and I pronounce it OH-bit; what about you MacDog?) I ever encountered was of Jeffrey Willick, a world-renowned cosmologist trying to discern the origins of the universe, who gets killed at a Starbuck’s by a drunken driver in Englewood, NJ. Go figure.

      • tedspe's avatar tedspe said, on September 22, 2012 at 8:29 pm

That’s true, Pawlie. For instance, Zsa Zsa Gabor’s obit has been hanging around in a computer’s word folder for about 10 years now. Just waiting for minor edits.
I’m not joking. I heard this from a journalist

Edd was cruising 563mph around 2 or 3 in the morning his time. He probably took my advice and hit the sack. But how awesome was it that Edd stood his ground on his post today? You don’t abandon your post, ever. That’s Stable Boy 101 shit……….

Could there be any different feeling when comparing tonight’s clinch and 2010? It’s like having coffee with some chick vs fucking her. Am I the only one underwhelmed right now? Oh well, let’s see how this all unfolds…..

    • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on September 22, 2012 at 8:39 pm

You know, I noticed that when they showed the flashback of Huff’s big hit in that 2010 game (after he eked out a walk). Totally opposite energy, it seems. Which worries me a little. We were on fever pitch then. And it helped.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 22, 2012 at 8:41 pm

It’s a huge issue. Every year there is the team that coasts into the playoffs and gets bounced. Every single year………..

      • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on September 22, 2012 at 8:44 pm

Totally. The hot team that stays hot wins it. Nothing on paper or size of contracts matters. All goes out the window. Major correction: Add HUNGRY to the formula.

completely. He’s not been on my radar all year and all of a sudden he’s on the cusp of 30 bombs this year. He wasn’t even getting drafted in most 30 round, 12 team leagues.

  12. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 22, 2012 at 8:41 pm

I want to say that Romo has done a great job closng- much better than I thought he would… but you HAVE to throw 95 plus for the sneer to work. If I’m the batter he gets me out because I fall down laughing. It’s like, “Dude, you must be kidding.. Get a fucking fastball and we’ll talk…”

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 22, 2012 at 8:45 pm

I agree except this has all been working. And I’m not working with actual stats. It’s just a feeling. Since they went CBC and it sorted itself out after a few weeks, where do we rank on saves? Especially the last month? I honestly don’t know.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 22, 2012 at 8:52 pm

We’ve been near the top in team saves all year. Currently we’re second in total saves (50 ). tied for first in save percentage ( 79%) .. in the NL

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 22, 2012 at 8:55 pm

I wasn”t talking at all about stats, either. Sergio just looks stupid, he’s too nerdy for the look he’s attempting.

Nats *coast* to NL East crown. Reds *coast* to NL Central crown. One of those teams might well be the one that gets bounced. If the Giants lose to either of them in the 1st round, it will be because those teams are better, not because the Giants *coasted*. Giants have fucking steam-rolled to this division crown, IMO. I don’t see much coasting. If you’re looking for that magical sense of things from 2 years ago, yeah, this ain’t it. But it’s a different kind of a good thing. Get your knowing-dude-nods going, gentlemen….

Different definitions of basking, I guess. I feel fairly basked watching them tear down that magic number of 19 not that long ago to dominating their way to the division crown. Now, if they roll over and play dead the last week of the season, then there’s a possible concern. I just don’t see that happening. Bochy and the players won’t allow it.

I’m thinking this is kind of magical in its own way to the players on this team. The young ‘uns, Belt, Crawford.. the recharged vets, Pagan, Scutaro, Pence… Posey and Pablo wanting more of what they had two years ago… the hitters getting things done, it ain’t just a pitching team anymore.
