A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Pitching (check), Batting (check), MVP (double check)

Posted in Uncategorized by eddacker on September 22, 2012

I have been a Giants Fan for a very long time, as have most of you. Very little of that time was my team a team clearly at the top, one of the ‘big boys’, winning and playing good baseball. They are, today, a 3 tool team using defence, offence and pitching. With Pablo coming alive the Giants can add the long fly. As Baggs wrote in his post game report last night:
This is what happens when you combine youthful energy, a commanding lead in the NL West and a team that has all the talent and confidence to make a sustained run through the playoffs.
This team is winning and I am a believer and unlike the NY fans, World Series or not, being in the playoffs means you are a top team; two out of three years now. It is still a month until we will know which of those top teams will play in the World Series. I like our chances.

Buster Posey is a big reason this team is winning. He has had extra incentive lately winning the Willie Mac award for most inspirational player on the team this year. The man is a Giant and there is great joy over, first his return from a frightening injury, second his hardball, winning attitude and, of course, third his shot at the MVP. His game is ON. Even Vern and Vera were bringing him food in the clubhouse saying, “a catcher needs to eat to keep his strength up.”

Posey should add another award sometime after the season ends, when baseball has gone quiet and the league MVPs are announced. Here’s why: over 20 HRs | premier backstop | no worse that 2nd in the batting championship | helped his team WIN the division | plays for the best team with the best fans in the best city. What are your thoughts?

P.S. The WC game is on my birthday this year. If any of you were considering gifting me a play-in game ticket I prefer Baltimore or Oaktown. No thanks if it is LA or Philly. Come to think of it East Coast teams mean cheaper air fair, but let me worry about that.

Hopefully there will be some fan memories made in SF this weekend. GET YOUR BLOG ON!

Being about 9,000 miles away, I get the bits and pieces about baseball and the Giants when and where I can; don’t see many games (ESPN Int’l out of Singapore seems to manage to show an occasional game on a weekend night your time, the next morning mine, but it’s always Yankees or Washington or Angels. WTF). But I do watch the MLB videos. I tell ya, I watched the wrap of last night’s game 10 times… studying every motion of every play, getting my fill. And what I see is, something different, someone different, every time, doing something to win the game, as a team. I wish I could watch it live as most of you can and do. One of the thrills of my life was being lucky enough in ’10 to be visiting the US during the playoffs and seeing the games.

That throw out of Headley, Blanco to Craw to Buster.. sweet. Pablo’s glowing aura at the plate right now… sweet. Dancing in the dugout? Fuck yeah. There was some discussion here yesterday about a concern that maybe they’re peaking too early, or they’ll lose their focus about to clinch relatively early, or Bochy will really have to work hard to keep them focused, etc. I don’t think so. Craig, I understand your feelings of certain individuals from ’10 being closer to the heart than those on this team, but I agree with whoever said it yesterday, what’s special about this team is…. the team. Washington, arrogant but very talented Washington, is going to be very difficult. So is Cinncy. Hell, maybe the wildcard will change all that. But right now… sweet, and very possible to keep it going.

Paul, not sure how it works in your area, but mlb.com is $10us for the rest of the season and the playoffs and the series. I use it here and the picture is brilliant. This year the quality is better than last year. I have had one bad day all season and there are far fewer internet lag issues than last year, too.
I assume once you join you would be able to see all this year’s games in the archives, which include condensed games and highlight videos.

Good stuff, edd but “offence”? “defence”? What are ya, an anglophile?
    😉

Actually, it’s more than wishful thinking about Posey getting the MVP. As you pointed out, he’s leading this team to the playoffs *and* he’s a frickin’ catcher. Yogi Berra’s won a couple times against guys with sexier stats and Posey’s ain’t too shabby and if he keeps this up–no arguement

When in Rome, and all that. When I first came here in 2003 I changed all my spell checkers to English(UK), cause mostly I spell worse than I talked. And, guess what? Everyone here uses the Queen’s guidance and dunt have that California swing. Now it is ingrained. Because I am interacting everyday, no matter how hard I try they all look at me and smile, “poor lad, American, be nice”. It weighs on me, TedSpe, day in and day out I cry: I look like an ordinary Englishman (a bit taller, but nevermind) why can’t they just accept me? I open my mouth and

Well, that reaction is the same everywhere, so,
      what was your question again?

Thanks, Ed, I will try that… I’ve tried other streaming and feeds, but it’s sometimes difficult to a) have adequate internet speed, and b) be able to actually pay for it online. Actually, the main reason I can’t see games much is the time difference, being 11 hours ahead of the east coast and 14 ahead of the west coast… I’m often either working or sleeping when the games are live. And Buster certainly qualifies for MVP… if Pittsburgh made the playoffs, you’d have to look at McCutcheon, and maybe Wash or Cincy has someone worthy as well. But this is definitely Buster’s team. Or at least it’s becoming so.

I think pablo gets less grief here than in other blogs and the airwaves, but I like the guy…esp when you consider the alternatives. Nothing I’ve seen from the minors in last few years is ready for mlb pitching, and Arias is strictly a back up. A good one but not a full time starter.
After a few years, I mean, he is what he is. Yes he’s big, but he didn’t suddenly drop 20 lbs. before this homestand. He can hit and field and still be big as long as his head is right. He hustles butt around the bases, and stole a bag a few days ago when asked.
Yes, part of the package is watching him swing and miss at a lot of odd pitches, but he happens to be capable of hammering pitches aimed at his back ankle or way high and wide a long ways. At least he is more patient than Hector, who at last count had 3 walks all freaking year.
He’s an infectious upbeat and very likeable personality…and a proven .300 hitter with some pop at a tough position to play.

Saw a sign from the outfield seats last night that said:

    M
    V
    Posey

    That about sums it up.

I’m not worried about the Giants losing their edge for clinching the division too early, mainly because whichever team they play — the Reds or Nats — will have clinched early as well. It’s the top seed that may have to be concerned with facing a team that has lots of momentum going into the playoffs, and right now the Brewers seem to be on that kind of a roll.

I’ve said from the first year he came up that keeping him on the field would be the number one problem- that was before the weight issues. Can you imagine him behind the plate- he’d be looking to get blown up..He breaks up double plays like a heat seekng missile, *my* hammy still hurts watching that split at first base… he may not be a face of the franchise, but he’s the soul of it…

Hey, Paul it is 2:00am where you are so I hope you had a sleepness night and realise all life only exists as a SF Giants fan.
Anyway, because you are like me, in a “no MLB news area” do what I do. (besides jello shots with Bozo).
Just when you have time – go to the MLB page and view the game (it is not like you heard the score on radio that day) or just watch the condensed game. They are great! Last week everyone on here was complaining about a four hour boring game. It was 20 minutes condensed. No chat, or announcers, just every play that is a strike, hit, out or score. Then click on the ‘Team’ button and go to SF boxscore. Finally read the reports from whom-ever is your reporter of choice. It is like you are the most informed fan on the planet!
Then go to the Flap and see how these booze hounds acted DURING the game. hehe

I’ve never cared if any in the baseball world consider the Giants in ’10 a fluke, but when the Giants are having a champagne celebration for winning the division in ’12 that takes away a lot of the “fluke” accusation. This team has the foundation to be a playoff contender on into the future.

While every team wants to win it every year, realistically the hope is to field a team that’s in it every year- this will be four in a row, and they’ve all been so different. Sabean has re-established his place as a premier GM and Bochy has emerged as a, what? Boring genius? Has a manager ever had his rep so drastically changed as when Bruce took Donnie to school? Sorta like the moment when you looked at Dad and realized he was right, as Calvin Trillin related: Gunga Din really was the greatest movie ever made…

For the life of me I can’t remember the name of the establshment but Loo sent me a gift certificate for a great Brooklyn Italian joint after my lung surgery- I got sausages, other cured meats, killer olives, cheeses- took it all to a pizza joint and they made special pies for a gaming party with the local lads at my house- it was one of the best times I’ve ever had. I wish I had a pic of the monster gaming rig I built for the occasion, water cooled and over clocked- the winner took it home…

Latos is just the classic Giant killer fuck who I love to hate. There isn’t one thing I don’t hate about Matt Latos. I think I auto-drafted him in the Flap at the beginning of the year and I either waived him or traded him immediately. He has the single worst organized tattoos I’ve ever seen on one arm. But he kills us. And I don’t want to face him in game 2 of a 5 game series especially if we are at home
I doubt we can get ahead of the Reds by the end of the year. If we did, at least a Latos loss would be in Cinn and not SF.

They definitely gagged up the lead in the 13th but they are competing with great intensity all the way to the wire. At some point that pesky 150 million dollar payroll advantage that the Yanks have > than the A’s is gonna take over but I wouldn’t describe what the A’s are doing as *gagging*, far from it (IMO)

This guy looked effectively done in 2010 and in the first half of 2011. Then he all of a sudden after a year and a hlaf of decline and the deterioration of his skills mocking him he all of a sudden takes off like a rocket ship? At 38 years old? maybe pre-2005 but not anymore. He’s clearly on steroids, he’s just smart and has enough money to pay for the best masking drugs available.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 22, 2012 at 6:49 pm

It’s too bad, I was rooting for them, but they never had the SP pitching to keep this going. And then a bunch of their hitters got cold. It happens.

      • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on September 22, 2012 at 6:51 pm

They did not have enough in the tank. But, man, compare them to the team the Giants faced on July 6-7-8. They killed us two of three. It is chapter 1 of my next book; though if an editor made it chapter 17, fine.

The Two Brandons have really come around, once they both stopped trying to pull everything. This is nothing new. Willie Mays — even when his slugging was good — would hit the other way if he was slumping in terms of average. Natch.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on September 22, 2012 at 7:02 pm

Pawlie, I think Belt was a little opp field happy earlier – but he was dinking them to left, not driving them like that one. But yeah, the Brandon boys have made a real difference in the last couple months. Pagan and Scutaro are igniting things, and the middle of the order is driving them in, but the kids can’t be overlooked anymore- have you noticed the respect Belt is now getting- bringing in lefties to face him, that wasn’t happening earlier.

  53. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 22, 2012 at 6:48 pm

Ed, think about it . . . You’re forgetting about one PED amongst the smorgasbord of drugs that is beyond MLB testing. Ding, Ding, Ding. Time’s up. If you said HGH, go to the front of the class.

I really dislike Skip Bayless, but he makes an excellent point when he says, “You would have to have your head in the sand or your head somewhere else not to at least wonder, `How is he doing this?'” Bayless said.

Bayless made his comments while discussing Jeter’s season with fellow commentator Stephen A. Smith, who defended the 13-time All-Star.

“I would have to be sight and hearing impaired not to at least wonder, because there is no HGH test in the sport of baseball,” Bayless said. “They do not blood test. They do it one time in spring training for HGH, not again the rest of the year. How could I not wonder is he using something? If you’re Derek Jeter, would you think about using HGH right now because I would. How would you not? Would you not think about it?”

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 22, 2012 at 6:51 pm

of course you are right and it’s beyond obvious that Jeter is taking something. He was on the classic slide into retirement sunset in 2010 and half way through 2011. Then as he approaches 38 years old he turns the clock back ten years?
Everyone knows it but since it’s Jeter he’ll never get busted. Honestly, i bet he never even gets tested…….

Is there a regime for how and when a player gets tested? I’m not going to spend the time looking that up but I THINK it’s random. Who manages that schedule?

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 22, 2012 at 6:59 pm

Here’s more BS from Jeter –

“I try not to think about age. As you get a little older, people talk about your age. I don’t go out there and think about being 30-something years old, I just think about trying to perform,” Jeter said. “You got to get here a little earlier and stay a little longer. I’m sure that applies to most people who are standing here right now. I think that’s normal, that’s for everyone. My fifth year wasn’t like my first year, just like this year isn’t like five years ago.”

Uhh huh. Give me a fucking break. Alex Rodriguez is a way better athlete and younger, yet who is having a season like he’s in the prime of his life? Rodriguez would be imbibing on HGH too, except he’s already been caught and he knows that $225 gazillion contract he has would be void if he got caught again. That’s the only reason he doesn’t risk taking anything.

      • tedspe's avatar tedspe said, on September 22, 2012 at 7:11 pm

“Age is just a number, dude. You are as you feel, man. I mean, what am I, am I 38 man? Am I 40? No fucking way, man! I am what I am and I don’t mean no Popeye bullshit but we all have our own spinach, man, you know what I’m fucking saying? I’m strong to the finishk cuz I take me spinishk, man. You know? And what my spinishk is is none of your fucking business, man”

Ted, in response to your 7:11 post . . . Did he really say that Ted? Too frickin’ funny.

I work out 5 days a week and there is NO way that I feel better than I did 5 or 10 years ago. My workouts have been adjusted downward, recognizing the fact that there are two things in life you can NOT beat – oxidation and gravity. Eventually, we all rust and what was located in your chest and arms, ends up as part of your ass. Sure, you can delay it, but you will never beat it. Same thing with quick twitch muscles. All of the stuff I was able to do 10 years ago, I wouldn’t even try today. In my mind, I think there is a very good possibility that Jeter is cheating.

Not certain, but I think Twin makes the point about a couple of our players being pear shaped. If I am them, I start doing the PX90 program pronto.

In one of the better ones he approaches a rival bad guy in a gym who is a weight lifter and eggs him into trying to bench as much as he can, with an offer to spot him. After he helps the guy get the weight up, he jumps over and lands on the guy’s chest and holds the bar down until foe expires….
