that is some fancy ass graphics you have going on there. Lasorda, the stadium’s burning down, I love it…..
I’ve been having a hard time putting my finger on why this post season has sucked for me so far. Two losses haven’t helped. It’s kinda like, it hasn’t started yet. WHat have they played, about 6 hours of baseball? Still haven’t jumped out of my chair even once. I let out a few F-yeah’s. I’ve let out a few f-you’s.

But for whatever reason, it just feels like nothing’s happened. Even the two losses, I’m not that bummed about them. It’s like it’s happened to someone else’s team. And today’s game starts while I’m still at work and then I have to coach soccer so Game 3, at least live, is going to have to be followed on my phone….

I REALLY do want to see this one get to at least Game 4. Sandawg had a great post last night that covers it for me:
“SanDawg said, on October 8, 2012 at 8:27 pm (Edit)
Snarkk–I like your point about Zito in today’s thread. Zits taking the mound in Game 4 with a chance to send the darn thing to Sudden Death would be such a good story, that I can’t imagine it not coming to pass. If he delivered on that stage, I would be finally ready to grant him total absolution for past sins. An “Etch-a-Sketch” moment if there ever was one!”

Maybe that’s what I need to get into this post season.

Or many just a win today will do it.

Way to fire it up, Dirt. I’ve got some left over chili and some Polish sausages. I think I’ll combine the two and really get things fired up.
In the words of Russ “Roos” Davis “I just want to go out and relax and play baseball,”
I’m going to take that sage advise, just relax and watch the Giants play fired up October baseball.

dirt that’s pretty funny, complete with the screaming lasorda.
Now if we can find something with the dutiful mrs. vogs, to get us all at “attention”…..
Always loved dave stewart’s game face, esp when he was mowing down red sox. Vogs seems like he’s out of the same mold.
Great W by O’s last night. Them and their fans look pretty fired up–love to see them take down Yanks.

Actually, I liked Ted’s Timmy rant late last night, where he channeled the movie Network, “I am as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore.” Hey, whatever works to cop us a game, I’m all for it. 🙂

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on October 9, 2012 at 8:05 am

It’s fine to rant but I disagree with most of Ted’s post from last night. For starters, the back of your baseball card means NOTHING as to how you are going to pitch today. So that’s point one.
Point 2: I don’t see where anyone is NOT giving Timmy a Winter to *see what happens*. If he comes back mechanics in tow then fine, the Giants will be all the better for it.
If he still sucks (and he did suck this year) then we can look at the options then (including trading him, though I can’t imagine what you’d get for what he gave this year–although who knows, lots of teams WILL pay for what a player’s done in his past history)
I’m not worried about giving Timmy a big deal. We already handed out our big deal to Cainer. And MadBum is locked up, too.
After Timmy turned down the Giants 100 million dollar offer it was then offered to Cain who took it.
There aren’t any more 100+ million dollar deals that the Giants will be handing out any time soon……..

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 9, 2012 at 9:15 am

Ted’s rant was funny, even though he was being serious with regard to his feelings for Timmy. No harm, no foul, in appreciating Tim. However, I am all about what you have done for me lately and I could see the handwriting on the wall in regard to the trajectory of his future performance and I spoke out about it. So, I think Ted’s rant was sort of directed at me (and perhaps, a few other Flappers, including yourself), who could give a rat’s ass what he or anyone else has done in the past. In short, I was adamant that the Giants Brass would be making a big, big, big mistake giving him the 8 year gazillion $$$$$ dollar contract. Fortunately, they didn’t succumb to his agent . . .

Soooooo, when spring training comes, perhaps something can be worked out. If not, I don’t see Tim here beyond next year’s All Star break. I’ll appreciate what he has done and wish him good luck where ever he lands. However, he’ll have to “punk” some other GM for the millions him and his agent are seeking (insofar as some la la land future performance they expect).

Reading through the thread from last night, TL is going to have the whole off season (since we might not see him on the mound again this year) to get himself back together. by all accounts he has been a stand up guy to media all season, and he continues to say all the right things publicly. I don’t think that’s an act, and I also think this caused Bochy a lot of pain to leave him out of the starting rotation, and that TL understands Bochy really wants him to succeed and not be embarrassed.
But there obviously have to be adjustments made, and it has zero to do with who is catching him. trying to do what you did 3 years ago isn’t going to work, it’s up to him and whatever brain trust he surrounds himself with to come up with a better plan. There are plenty of guys with less fastball than him that are still very effective, esp if he can regain command of that pitch coupled with off speed stuff. Seemed to me everyone was laying off the change, so maybe he was tipping it.
I just didn’t see the same old fire and competitiveness this season in his body language. He seemed more resigned to a fate than to dig in and battle against it. What exactly would be wrong with sending one up and in to Goldschmidt, or at least making an effort to back some of these clowns that were raking him off the plate?
throughout the year you would see glimpses of the old tim where he would dominate and rack up Ks for a few innings. but they were all too often bookended by an inning where he would throw 35 pitches and couldn’t escape without giving up a crooked number, more eerily reminiscent of sanchez than Cy Young.
Hopefully he takes something out of the crowd noise from his last effort and uses that as a springboard to dedicate the offseason, whenever that begins, to making 2013 more productive.

But the fact that the Giants had to leave the Bay Area with their collective tails between their legs could be an incentive to not let the city and fans down and put up the fight of their lives!
I’m hoping to see Dusty’s clenched teeth destroying that damn toothpick while G-Men flooding the baseline with runners like a Bugs Bunny baseball cartoon!

Besides Pagan and Scutaro being AWOL, so have I…so my reappearance should turn the tide! Go Giants. We win tonight, I have a good feeling about Game 4 with Cueto being a big question mark and they wont go with Latos until Game 5.

We get to a Game 5, anything can happen!

I think Cain had one truly bad pitch and we could have just have easily gone into the 9th inning in Game 1 tied 1-1…I think Bochy should have been running with all abandon in Game 1 to get players in scoring position and extending pitch counts on the Reds…so let’s get a win and take care of business tomorrow!

I am bailing from work early today to catch the game.

    Let’s GET IT ON!

There was a small movie made in the mid ’80s that was flat out funny about a yuppie couple that quit their high paying jobs, sold all their belongings, and explored America in their Winnebago . . . Unfortunately, the wife loses all their money (nest egg) in Vegas and they end up in a small mid-western town, where the husband applies for a job paying 100k (a lot of money in 1985) at the local employment office . . . This scene reminds me of Timmy NOW trying to score the 8 year gazillion dollar contract.

No question Zito winning game 4 would be a helluva twist to a bizarre story. I think he’s already been forgiven quite a bit with the year he had. Most guys don’t get standing ovations after 6 1/3 giving up 1 run…but he got one this year.
And if the journeyman Vogelsong were to shut down the Reds and win today, that’s a pretty damn good story, too.
I think it was the right thing to do giving them the starts over Tim. They simply had better years and Tim still was still struggling in late Sept. His last 2 starts did nothing to suggest he was going to come up big in the playoffs.

  14. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 9, 2012 at 9:23 am

Snarkk had a good point I thought about Reds and their division. The entire division is full of warm weather hitters parks and features mostly less than stellar pitching staffs, so I think that also skews the over all stats. Despite how many bombs they hit I just don’t think that SS Cozart and Rf Jay Bruce are the next A-Rods or Hank Aarons.
Reds pitched well in SF; ever since Posey swung and missed that high hard one from Chapman Giants haven’t mounted much of a threat. Should end starting soon.
As a kid I always liked the reds, from frank robinson and vada pinson through rose and other oakland guys tommy harper and morgan and all the machine (loved Sparky AKA captain hook), including SF cast off george foster. But Chris Sabo, HOF all ugly team, put an end to that.

As to Zito and Game 4- first, hope we get there. Then… while my dislike of Zito is well known, I’m glad he’s getting the shot. After the years of failure here. a victory would hardly be “redemption” but with more to go on the contract, it would be major step in that direction. Today? I’ll be rooting as always, and Vogie has earned the start, but I still feel Tim should have had one of the first three starts- regardless of his year. That’s where Bochy will be answering questions- if they get swept and his two time CY and WS hero pitches just 2 relief innings..
All of this being my opinion, of course.

This kind of thing always gets over analyzed. The Grizzlies could beat the Yankees two games-or three. There’s always a mad serch for goats when your team gets beat, and there’s never a lack of them if that’s one’s thing. And 9-Zip.? Take your pick, there’s probably a dozen plus the manager, the coaching staff, and Amy. I’m going with Amy since that fucker Rowand isn’t around anymore, darn. .

Twin noted that Alex Smith had a 108.7 QB rating, enough to lead the NFL. I remember Denny yapping about how the NFL Total QB rating is the *new* stat and that it had replaced the antiquated regular NFL passer rating. Just checked that stat and low and behold, Alex Smith is on top of that list too.
Hmmmm. I wonder what stat Denny will dig up now to try to support his mindless, delusional claims about Smith……

Cool graphic, Dirt. I hope Bochy’s right on this one, because I have my doubts. It doesn’t help that every baseball fan I know here in NJ is perplexed why a former 2-time CY winner, no matter how lousy he pitched this season, isn’t making a start in the playoffs. But, In Bochy I Trust. Besides, I’ve often wondered during the regular season how Vogey and his famous intensity would do in a playoff game. Now we’ll find out.

That’s exactly how I feel Mac . . . I know that a lot of fans wring their hands and criticize, but sometimes things just don’t go your way. Twin’s 9:57 am captures the futility of playing “the blame game.” People that point a finger, usually ignore the 3 pointed directly back at them.

Lost in America. Check it out, people.

Shit, I just hope we get the chance to get to game 4. Like I said the other day, these Bochy teams usually bounce back pretty well from adversity. And it don’t get much more adverse than this.

Seeing how this team played on the road, 3 wins is certainly doable. But it would be real fucking weird to see Bubbles getting a start in the playoffs. Looking back all the way to his first start in April, where Zito pitched a complete game shutout IN COLORADO, his season defies explanation or belief.

On Aug 2, he lost to the Mets to go 8-8. He’s won 7 starts, and the Giants have won all 11 of his games since then.

Does it mean anything? Well, no. Even his 2 losses to the Reds this year were 2-1 and 4-2. He didn’t get raked.

One at a time as the old cliche goes . . .

  22. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 9, 2012 at 10:37 am

I won’t say it’s necessary, but it’s nearly so that they get out in front early today. Bash the Reds a little to let them know we’re not rolling over. Pagan and Scutaro have to show signs of life, and maybe do some running and hit/run early to pressure their defense, which is very good. Bailey has a less than 2 late season ERA, but he’s not very effective at home. Be patient, get good pitches, and club this guy early. Vogytron will be geeked up to beat the band, so a little early cushion would help relax him and help prevent an adrenaline mistake pitch. Other than that, play ball, and see what happens…

It may be the centre field camera angle but that strike zone is hard for me to see it seems to be floating.

The strike zone is floating inside a postage stamp.
