Next . . .
In the middle of game three, I posted something to the effect that stealing this game would be a huge hit to the reds and that the offense would come to life. Last night, I posted something to the effect that the stars were aligned and that the giants were going to win game 5. I also was ready to predict that we would defeat whomever (I was thinking the Cards) in the NLCS in no more than six games. But when the game began today I was nowhere near so confident. And yet, the stars apparently were aligned. So, do we care who’s next? I, for one, hate me some cardinals. Truly, intensely, hate me some cardinals. Do I want to see them next? Yes and no. I’m kind of stoked to see the nats do well. I would surely hate to lose to the Cards. But to beat them . . . oh, sooo sweet. I love the fact that whoever the giants face will have had to go five, deep into the rotation and hopefully deep into the bullpen. If I were purely a stat geek, I would root for the nats because the giants do so well on the road. Regardless, it’s over, giants win, in six.
And on we flap . . .
For selfish reasons, I’m rooting for the Nats. If they win I might be headed to DC to see Sunday and Monday’s game. Probably go with the $60 standing room only ticket because it’s a pretty easy stadium to walk around and see the game and also because money is a little tight for me right now.
Either way, bring em on.
I am going to pick the nats as our least volatile challenger. Because I would like to (sorta) know someone who is at the game. You go Bozo!
And because it avoids embarrassing confrontations with my good friend who is a rabid Cards fan. I don’t think I have seen him once this year without his championship jacket on.
Thanks edd. When I moved from SF the toughest thing was selling my Season tickets. I enjoyed being able to go to whatever game I wanted. Now, it’s a five or six hour drive to DC, 10 hour drive or hour flight to Atlanta and the occasional 3,000 mile trip to SF. Not the best but not as bad as you have it if you want to see the boys live.
Cheers man.
All I have to say is that there is some power in those White Russians…I have been drinking those for 3 straight days starting with that 9th inning for Game 3…so you all know what you need to do Sunday night!!
Half of me wants to play the Nats instead of the Cards because I think the Nats will be the easier team to beat. But the other half of me prefers home field even though we have not been sharp back at ATT. I would also prefer agames here in DC if I could get my Firm’s seats four rows behind home plate, but I am low on the totem poll…and I ratehr watch a playoff game at home on the big screen over a crappy seat in a stadium surrounded by opposing fans.
But if by a miracle I get one of these home games box seats behind the plate if the Nats win, I will defintiely give you all a head’s up to watch for me taunting the Nats from behuind the plate…but I am predicting the Cards close this out…
I would like the Giants to face Stl next. That way we can see shots of a dejected Beltran when SF closes them out.
I’m in on that Dirt for my own selfish reasons of wanting Carlos Beltran to fail on a massively epic scale; as he did while on my 1st place Flapper team. I hold him singularly responsible for Ed receiving all the Flap praises and the Rich Aurilia broken bobble head doll, while leaving me in his exhaust fumes. Yes, I want the Cards next and their bitch, Carlos Beltran. 🙂
Jeez, I _gave_ you Mauer, it was the best I could do. My team’s withering pressure could make most men cry.
This was the first time in National League history. San Francisco pulled off an unprecedented revival. Playing on the road seems to be working out just fine for the Giants. The San Francisco Giants dispatched the Cincinnati Reds; they could not get it done after having the tying run at the plate in each of the last four innings and the winning run in the ninth.
Hunter Pence: a part of Giants lore, even when he’s not hitting.
A grand slam by Buster Posey.
Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan stood and turned away, unable to watch the ball head for the seats.
The Giants withstood a furious late rally.
A big strikeout-him-out, throw-him-out double play.
A five-game NLDS victory.
As they attempt to win the World Series for the second time in three years.
And everything was right in the Giants’ world.
and the MVP of the 2012 NLDS is the CBC those guys all done good. Cain’s 6 innings was the deepest any starter went in any of the 5 games.
I REALLY don’t want to see the Cardinals in the World Series again. I’m so sick of these average ass teams that get hot at the end of the season and ride a wave into the Series. And don’t give me any shit about the Giants in 2010, they BROUGHT IT from Sept 1st on. Plus, the 2010 Giants won their division. The last 2 seasons, the fucking Cardinals, who I already hate, seem to get hot the last week of the season and do just enough to sneak into the playoffs as a wild card.
So I want to play the Nats because the idea of the Cardinals beating us to get back to the World Series is too much for me to tolerate, even if it’s just a nightmare and not reality.
By the way, I’m not a big Berman-fan and I think his HR calls are played out (Back, back, back, just stop it already).
But his call of the Posey grand slam, from a guy who is a known Giants fanatic, was truly goose-bump worthy. I guess he was calling the game for ESPN radio……
Flav, gym time today???????????? Or, skate day?
yeah, I will probably be there around 3:30. I’ll text you when I head over there.
if you can find a link to Berman’s call, please share it; not being self-serving and solipsistic but love the text mascot
I’ve been trying to finds Miller’s “adios pelota” call for a ring tone but no luck so far.
My rotation for a series agaisnt the Nats:
Bum-Vogelsong-Cain-Lincecum
Timmy deserves a start now and Zito will be lucky to be kept on the roster (I think we need an extra bat against the Nats), but Timmy has been awful in every game I have seen him pitch here in DC. I’d rather have him comfortable at home. Bum is the most rested and let’s hope he regains his 2010 playoff form. Voggy has veteran cajones, I think he proved a lot in Game 3 in Cincy. So even if we are down 1-0, he is not going to panic in a Game 2 start in DC. It then sets up that if they come back to DC for Games 6 and 7, you would have Voggy and Cain ready to deal. If Bum or Voggy imploded in their first start, I could live with Lincecum the stopper out of the bullpen reappearing, then I would be fine with a Zito Game 4 start if he is on the roster.
Rotation against the Cards:
Bum-Lincecum-Cain-Voggy
Again, I’d rather have Lincecum at home and if we play the Cards and finish off at home for Games 6 and 7, we have Lincecum and Cain lined up.,..
Dollars to donuts Peter, that Lincecum has been poor because of your 500 F degree weather. Under 100 F, he should be fine. 😉
Blade, I was there and that 4th of July day game was more like 1,000 F degrees. But as the Flap weatherman you probably just thought your equipment was malfunctioning (Hey, I don’t care what she said. My equipment didn’t malfunction).
My equipment is running great after the 100,000 mile tune up and besides, it’s fuel injected, w/quad exhaust (for those days, where I have had a bit too much frijoles). 🙂
amazing thread yesterday! Like wilco I caught up with about 400 posts, didn’t get to see any baseball til A’s were on. Went back and finished reading and posts were up to 570…nice.
I don’t think Nats are ready for prime time, but they do have Gio Gonzalez going up against Wainwright at home, so we’ll see. Cards pen does not impress me, so in close games late SF definitely would have an edge against them in that dept. Nats had our number this year, but that was then….
One thing that has definitely been settled is the argument Romo can’t close. He might not physically be up to getting 3-4 out saves day in and day out, but during the whole CBC thing it’s mostly been he or Lopez getting the final out and closing the door on the opposition (as Casilla and Affeldt go in earlier), and often as not it involves Romo getting out a LH as well as RH. And he is getting the job done…it can’t get any more stressful than Reds best power guy at home in his own yard with everything on the line like yesterday.
Meant to say: great thread yesterday, Ted. And 571 comments must be a record here. More later, girls. BASKING.
Correcto El Mundo Senor Kokonuts . . . 572 as we speak, since I could not allow Chuck’s retort late, late last night to go unchallenged.
Ha!
I really don’t know who’s “the better team”, St. Louis or the Nats. But I do feel bad ju ju with Washington this year for the Giants. I also don’t want to see the Cards in the Series again, but I’d kinda like for the Giants to take care of that. The last 2 World Series champs fighting it out for the chance to go back to the promised land…
Rather play the Nats.Cause you all know we have the two Cardinal “Homers” Joe Moron Buck and Tim McCarver calling the next round.JUST BRUTAL!!!!!
1: to lie or relax in a pleasant warmth or atmosphere
2: to take pleasure or derive enjoyment
Fucking A Right – I am one BASKING motherfucker right now! And it feels GRAND!
There are a couple of reasons I want to see the Cards more than the Nats:
1) Home field advantage (I know…questionable the way we have played of late)
2) The Nats really had our number this year. I have FOUL memories of being swept in their yard in July.
3) And this one most important (not that I hold a grudge, or anything), but I want FUCKING RETRIBUTION for the 1987 NLCS. (No details provided…it is just TOO PAINFUL.) I want fucking paybacks!
I’m leaning toward the Nats. Like many of you, I’m sick of the Cards. And the Nats whipped up on us but good during the season, so it’d be nice to get another shot at ’em. And for whatever reason, the Giants are playing better on the road.
I didn’t have a lot of time for reflection after the great victory, but that was some game. Right there with Game 5 in ‘02 and Game 3 in ‘10, both at Atlanta. What is it about these short series that produces such gut-wrenching drama? And to think, as slow and agonizing as it all went down, the Giants won these 3 games within a 48-hour span. No time to think or celebrate, just go to the ballpark and get back at it.
Those last 4 innings, man, what constant pressure by the Reds. Reminded me of watching so many Yankees playoff games; even when they lose, the pressure they put on the opposition every inning is relentless. It’s more like your team survived than won. But survive and advance we did.
So many seemingly insignificant decisions that make such a difference…keeping Hector out of ST over whitey and the guy we dumped to the Yanks (stewart?). Keeping Arias as back up IF behind Pablo crawford Theriot (and dumping font and burriss). Blanco, who f-ing homered yesterday and was an all world defender, esp whenever Cain pitched, is still around and contributing while Pill is not. Keeping Kontos around and watching him mature, and picking up an extra loogy in Mijares from the royals. This many supplemental pieces added, it’s not an accident. And it’s also not an accident they are managed to perfection and come up big when called upon.
Without even bringing up the big moves like acquiring Pagan (and Melk) Pence and Scutaro, imo this is what separates the guys still watching their teams play from those setting up tee times and fishing trips.
Dickheads on ESPN radio. Caught part of Mike&Mike. They had Yank’s announcer Michael Kay on. He was groggy. But all the talk was about poor a-rod, poor Yanks not hitting, why not bench Swisher, Granderson, or Cano. BLAH BLAH BLAH. Don’t know who they had on earlier or later but fergawdsakes YOU’D THINK THE ORIOLES DIDN’T EVEN EXIST. By the way, David Simon, creator of The Wire, wrote an awesome essay in sports illustrated a week ago. One of this country’s very best non-fiction writers. His HOMICIDE is classic.
Treme is a pretty damn good show as well.
A guy on the Syracuse Common Council, Pat Hogan, is both a neighbor and friend. He’s also a huge Nats fan. (Our AAA Syracuse Chiefs are affiliated with the Nationals.) Last night I told him that he and I should think seriously about going to D.C. if his boys advance. I told him how just being there would be a thrill. It would. Um, his schedule is less flexible than that of a boulevardier-would-be-author-flaneur who uses two (2!) affected, snotty French words in a sentence. Stay tuned.
Not ready to lay down a prediction on a rotation until we know who the Giants play. But I do think they go with 12 pitchers. Bochy loves having lots of bullets/options when it comes to picthing. So, I think the following are a lock:
Cain, MadBum, Tim, Vogey, Mota, Kontos, Mijares, Affeldt , Lopez, Casilla, Romo.
I know, that is only 11. Not sure who the 12th will be, but I am leaning that Zito makes the cut.
Reserves: Arias, Burriss, Nady, Sanchez, Theriot.
Who you calling a flanuer?
WTF IS a flanuer?
a flaneur, e before u, is an idle man about town
Thanks perfesser . . .
My bad . . . I thought it was a more sophisticated Flapper.
ZING!
For the record, I used to fear the Nats, based on history this season, and the Cards, based on their mojo last year. But for the record, inspired by the Rt. Rev. Old Testament Prophet Hunter Pence, I FEAR NO FECKING ONE OR THING!!!!! Bring anyone or anything on!
I couldn’t care less who we face next-obviously homefield isn’t a huge issue. And I see no real edge or disadvantage playing either team. Regular season record means very little…
The CBC has worked quite well but I have to note again that a guy isn’t the “real” closer until he’s the only guy warming up for the ninth in a save situation and he’s the last line of defense. With that said, Sergio was awesome in the NLDS. Nearly as important were 4 outings by Kontos- who probably woud not have made the roster if Bochy hadn’t gone with 12 pitchers…but 11 would be the proper move for the NLCS, just 4 starters.I don’t expect that, but it would be the correct decision if sentiment is not a factor-unless MadBum is moved to the pen, which makes a lot od sense, giving Zito a Game 4 start.
And just as the players have done, a huge shout out to Pence. Don’t know about the Gipper speeches but his gutting it out in Game 3 was as a big as anything in the series…
Pawlie, you may not be a football fan, but after the Jets lost on Monday night to the (5-0) Texans, the announcers spent the whole time talking about how ‘respecably’ the Jets lost. They bring Texans RB Arian Foster onto the set with Dilfer and Young, say hi and then cut to Rex Ryan at the podium for 5 minutes. They talk with Foster for 2 minutes then cut to Mark Sanchez for his locker room comments. Cut back to live and a few more minutes talking with Foster and they cut to Tebow’s live interview. Cut back to the set and Steve says “we keep Arian Foster waiting on National live TV to watch the Jets press conference? It’s called east coast bias. Is that what being 2-3 gets you?”
It was amazing, Texans unbeaten at 5-0, the feature running back on set and he has to sit through the machinations of the Jets coach and both QB’s about their loss. At least Young stands up to the idiocy of his own network and calls them out on their EC bias.
What’s the deal with Affeldt? He fell down the dugout stairs dodging a foul ball, and he had a sling on his throwing arm later in the game. He may determine what eventually happens with Zito.
very instructive; thanks for that; BTW, I became a Niners fan circa 1981; good timing
champ summers. RIP. boy does that make me feel old.
Champ had combined 177 PAs for the Giants in 1982 and 1983…
loved him just for his name not to mention abilities!
Jeez. He hasn’t been out of the game that long . . .
http://tinyurl.com/9kv6sup
Bummer— he’s one of the RGOTD and a name I’ll never forget. How did he die?
Yeah, and he’s in the porn-star mustache hall of fame.
Kidney cancer.
John “Champ” Summers, a retired 10-year Major League Baseball player, arrived in Ocala 13 years ago for a very specific reason.
“My husband wanted to live on a golf course, to get up in the morning and go play golf,” said Joy Summers, his wife of 27 years.
Champ Summers, 66, died Thursday after a long battle with kidney cancer. He had lived at Spruce Creek Preserve since 1999, when he and his wife moved from La Jolla, Calif.
Summers was a Vietnam veteran who played 10 MLB seasons for six different teams. His longest stay with one team was a three-year run with the Detroit Tigers starting in 1979, when he was traded from the Cincinnati Reds mid-season. Summers had arguably his finest season with the Tigers that partial year, when legendary manager Sparky Anderson sought him out to be his designated hitter. Summers batted .313 with 20 home runs, 51 RBIs and seven stolen bases in just 246 at-bats over the remainder of that season.
Summers also played for the Athletics, Cubs, Giants and Padres. In his final season, 1984, he was part of the Padres’ first-ever National League champion team and went on to face the Tigers in the World Series, where he struck out in his lone at-bat.
He finished his 10-year career with 1,371 at-bats, 350 hits (.255 avg.), 54 home runs and 218 RBIs.
Whoever we get next, the Giant’s motto stays the same.
Pelea!
I tell ya, Geroge Kontos was the guy who really shined in this NLDS. After the rolling disasters that Edlefson, Otero, Hacker, and Hensley (and others) turned out to be this season, Kontos cemented himself into the relief corps just when they desperately needed someone to step up.
Absolutely!
Champ was 66. That’s young these days. What a great baseball name- and he had some fine years in the game.

I am on board with Timmy getting the first start of the next series. He certainly showed enough in his 2 relief appearances to merit a start. And why not the first one? It would send a huge message to the baseball world that our swagger is back if Timmy has a solid start. I still feel very confident that Bochy will keep Zito on the roster, and I hope he does, he’s earned it.
I think I might actually prefer the playoff rotation to go: Tim, Voggy, Cain, Zito and have MadBum be the guy coming out of the bullpen to save any of the 4 starters. Fact is, he hasn’t been pitching well for a while now. Even his start on 9/17 was suspect (to me) since he walked 5 guys in 6 innings. If you want to find his last *playoff worhty* start you have to go back to August 20th when he shut the Dodgers out over 8 innings, striking out 10…..
Bum has a tired arm right now that might be more suited for some bullpen relief work than starting a game……..
Cain’s not exactly setting the world on fire either lately. Solid, but occasional vulnerable work. He’s getting the ball up earlier in his pitch count. I think all the starters are running towards empty right now, though it’s hard to tell with Zito ;)…
Game 1 is Sunday, that would be only three days in between if Lincecum gets the start. But he only threw 55 pitches Wednesday, so that sounds do-able. Otherwise, Vogey would probably get the start and Timmy for Game 2.
They said Tim was ready if needed, yesterday. I see no problem with him taking the ball in game 1, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the idea. And I agree with your analysis of Madison. I like him out of the pen.
Macht nichts who the Gyros play next. The hot weather is gone in both places, the issue now might be cold weather, which would favor a Nats series.
The Giants are stoked, and will play better at home than the Cincy debacle, regardless of the oppo.
We beat the Cards in that memorable 2002 NLCS, it can be done again. Beltran might have some bad juju coming into ATT, so that would be a plus…
It was cool to stick it to the Cards in 2002, but no way did it completely erase my memories of ’87. And, for that reason (I listed three earlier today), I want to see the Cards in the NLCS this year.
But, as a few have mentioned, I am down with whoever the Giants face.
Bring ’em on…
Let’s GET IT ON!
I think the Giants would be better served starting their playoff chase on the road. Go Nats!
BF’s mention of Affeldt makes me think of Lopez who had to be rushed in yesterday once Affeldt took that foul ball in the dugout. I love the guy, he’s nails, but who is the most expensive pitcher on staff per out “gotten” over the season? In the running, gotta be Lopez, he pitches to one lefty every other game or so, and does the job. $4 million? That’s good work if you can get it. Like the plumber that’s called in to fix the boiler in the building’s basement. Goes down, it’s a really old boiler, he looks at it, says to the owner — this thing’s really old, maybe you should get a new one? Owner says, no, fix it, it should last a few more years. So, the plumber takes out a ball-peen hammer, taps the boiler once in the back, the thing flames on and is good to go. The owner says “Great! Thanks for coming out, what’s the damage?” “Oh, that’ll be just $1000.” $1000–that’s highway robbery! All you did it tap it with a hammer, I want an itemized bill! Plumber says OK, that’s $1 for tapping the boiler. $999 for knowing where to tap it…
Good one snarkk!
Love it snarkk!
Affeldt joked about it, claims he is okay, unless there is later info.
Thx, Pawlie…
If the Nats lose today, the Strasburg decision will be hung onto the Nats management for the next decade.
I don’t know how they could have bungled that in a worse way…
So true, that is why I want the Nats, I want it go 7 games and the Giants win by 1 run in game 7. Their management team needs to be taught a lesson. They all think it is easy to get to the playoffs and win!! they need a dose of reality that there is no sure thing in sports. Their Management team is just blowing off teams like the Cubs, Phily, etc, etc. it is just BS what they are doing to their fans, let alone the team
PAP hasn’t been in the news as much as it used to be- but it’s not an invalid theory, which is why almost all teams *do* limit young pitcher’s workload. One coming TJ is especially one to be monitored. The Nats did not make a mistake in limiting Steasburg. The mistake was not watching his innings earlier ro insure he would be available for the postseason if they got there. And it’s been obvious for a couple months or more that they would make the playoffs.
I’d prefer 4-0 and ther Giants winning every game by 5 . . .
With you bro . . . Torture I will take, but pounding whomever we end up playing is my preference.
I am down with POUND IT, POUND IT, POUND IT…
4-0 with severe ass-whoopins administered in each game is what I would love to see. Complete fucking domination!
GO GIANTS!
Imbecilic decision by Mike Rizzo to not have him on the roster. Worse, he totally pissed off GMs around the league with this quote, “We’ll be back and doing this a couple more times.” Uhh huh . . . I wonder what he bases that on????? Certainly not their previous inept seasonal and (lack of) post season play. These are what some GMs said regarding his arrogant attitude:
“If we don’t win the World Series, I don’t care who does,” one general manager told USA Today, “as long as it’s not those guys. They don’t deserve to win it. Not after what they did.”
Added another: “I hope they go down in flames. I hope it takes another 79 years before they get back to the playoffs. That’s how strongly I feel about it.”
Rizzo reacted angrily on Thursday, calling the anonymous quotes “chicken(bleep)” in nature, according to CBSSports.com. “That’s not how we do things in my neighborhood,” Rizzo said. He also doesn’t regret shutting down Strasburg, who Rizzo said was wearing down late in the season.
I say bullshit. Besides, he is changing his story now . . . At the time, I seem to recall them saying something about Strasburg being “emotionally wrung out” (another BS Nats upper management excuse that Strasburg vehemently denied).
I was all backwards yesterday – the only way I go to an NLCS game is if we play the Cards & it goes 7 games…now I don’t know who to root for because I do not particularly care for that scenario. Whoever we play, I’d like the guys to wrap it up in 5 or 6. But, I REALLY want to go to a game. If DC wins, no game for ferret. So conflicted – hate StL, don’t want it to go 7, want to go to a game. Gah! Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit…wait a minute, this may all be moot by 9:00 tonight! Whew, I’ll worry about it then. I think I’ll just enjoy the afterglow for now. Ahhhh, so good!!!
You can always get a ticket. My daughter got a SRO ticket a few days before the WS game she went to. Yeah, it wasn’t cheap, but she was there. I was invited to go, but chose not to…and I am STILL kicking myself in the ass for that decision!
Interesting . . . Per Las Vegas:
Who will sign Josh Hamilton next?
San Francisco Giants 3-1
Atlanta Braves 5-1
Texas Rangers 5-1
Philadelphia Phillies 7-1
New York Yankees 9-1
Chicago Cubs 9-1
Boston Red Sox 9-1
Pittsburgh Pirates 10-1
Toronto Blue Jays 10-1
Los Angeles Dodgers 15-1
I don’t get that at all. I think SF would be one of the last places this guy would want to come to. He made a point of mentioning the dope smoke in the air when Texas was here for the WS. He’s a born again type with potential substance abuse relapse issues always right around the corner, so why would he come to a heathen SF where the fans wear shirts of “Let Timmy Smoke”. Plus, the Giants aren’t going to open the wallet to pay this guy $23 million a year on a LT deal, which somebody will. I say there’s no chance at all he comes to SF…
Who cares what he said? He probably said that for public consumption. Do you think they have a prohibition on whores, cocaine, weed and alcohol in Texas? He’s already relapsed twice since being there, despite being a born again Christian.
I am not advocating him coming to SF, only showing the Las Vegas odds; which quite frankly, make sense, insofar as the Giants having the need for a slugger, having the money to afford one and Sabean loves his veterans.
They definitely do have all that in Dallas. Of all my points, the strongest one IMO Blade is the money. The Giants aren’t going to break the bank for anybody except a guy like Cain. I don’t think there’s any way they put up the LT cash they’d need to in order to snag this guy from the competition. The Ranger fans per their blogs don’t want him back, they’re fed up with him, which sends up a big red flag to me…
The next guy who will “break the bank” for the Giants should be…WILL BE Gerald Demp Posey III. Back up the Brinks truck and give him ALL THE FUCKING MONEY!
I see a very small chance Hamilton comes here.
If you re-watch the mlb.com vid, the Bruce AB was really an epic battle. And, really, that last slider to Rolen was a damn floating hit me buttefly, but Rolen missed it, maybe because it was floating so much. Romo was gassed, going on heart, and not much else. Awesome stuff. I love baseball…
From today’s SFGate:
With bedlam in the clubhouse surrounding him, as loud and bubbly as these things get, Sergio Romo stood alone, his back to a locker, and tried desperately not to cry.
He was winning the battle until he was asked what filled his mind during his riveting and spectacular 12-pitch duel with Jay Bruce in the ninth inning, as the Giants’ season teetered in the balance. He choked up, and his eyes glistened.
“I was thinking about my teammates,” Romo said. “I couldn’t let them down. It was not in me. Holy cow, I couldn’t let them down.”
That is FUCKING AWESOME. I LOVE me some Sergio Romo! THAT…his part about “I was thinking about my teammates…I couldn’t let them down” IS what it is ALL ABOUT!
Fuck…I love baseball, AND I love this fucking team!
Damn! I just got fired-up, AGAIN!
Snarkk mentioned Lopez and his 4 milion, which he’s earned every penny of, of course. BTW, that’s the *total* Casilla has earned in three years here in 174 games. 2.22 ERA. Not shabby. Others:
Romo 2.8 million 276 games 2.20 ERA ( gotta think he’ll be making decent bucks after this year, he’s not arb eligible, but they signed him for just 1.5 mill this year, have to think they extend him and buy out the arb years. My guess: 5 million per year thru 2014..
Affeldt: 17 million and signed thu 2013 for another 5 or so.261 games 2.73 ERA Toughie. If Lopez is the plumber, Jeremy is the plumber, carpenter, roofer, and electrician. Not just a loogie. Not many lefty relievers can be used in any capacity as he can. That’s big bucks, though. I’m giving it the rest of this postseason for a judgement. He’s earned about a third of his of his imoney n the Philly appearance in 2010 and this year’s NLDS, IMO.
Mota 2.7 million 134 games 4.18 ERA. just about right. Undoubtedly gone after this year. Try robitussin next time.
Affedlt blows hot and cold now way more than he used to. When he’s on, he’s really good.
When he’s not, he yells at Hector…
This is my take on the pitching rotation . . .
If St. Louis gets in, then I expect the rotation to go:
Bumgarner game 1; Vogelsong game 2; Cain game 3; and, Lincecum* game 4.
*Zito might get the game 4 call due to him having a quality start against St. Louis during the season. Lincecum would be used in relief.
If Washington gets in, then I expect the rotation to go:
Bumgarner game 1; Lincecum game 2; Cain game 3; and Vogelsong game 4.
If you know what happened in the regular season, you are PRAYING for St. Louis to be the opponent. Why?
Vogelsong, for what it’s worth, was outstanding in his one start against St. Louis and terrible in his one start against Washington this year. Lincecum struggled twice against the Nats and never faced the Cards. Zito had one quality start against the Cards and never faced the Nats.
Blade, I saw those Vegas odds on Hamilton too and thought it was a little curious. I tend to agree with Snarkk’s points.
While I hope they do, even if SF doesn’t win the ring this year that will be 2 out of 3 years making it at least to the NLCS. I wonder if that changes any of the thinking of free agents out there this off season. Would they take a little less to have a shot at post season play? I would hope so but I doubt it. Guys like Pence that are a little off kilter seem to love it here. SF should try to keep pence on a 2 – 3 year, look for Belt to improve and fill the gaps around Sandoval, Pence, Posey, Crawford, Belt et all.
Yeah, like I said to snarkk, I could give a rat’s ass if he comes here. The problem with Hamilton is that he is injury prone and in my mind, an “old” 31. This is a big red flag insofar as injuries and drug problems – On Sept. 24, 2012, it was reported, “Josh Hamilton has not played since September 18th. He has been battling a sinus infection and blurred vision which kept him from even traveling with the team for the series against the Seattle Mariners.”
Sinus infection???????????? In my mind, sinus infection is code for cocaine.
I hadn’t thought of that but him coming to SF just doesn’t make sense to me. He’s a great story and the temptation of SF would be too great. I would hate to see the guy living in a tent under the 280 encampment with a bag full of bath salts. Either way I don’t think SF needs him and should keep on the path they’re going with development. If anything I could see Sabean going after more arms this OS.
wasn’t that when he was “withdrawing” from chewing tobacky?
I thought y’all might find this part of yesterday’s celebration funny. The Timmy “I was hit in the fucking face with a fucking cork” part, that I’m not sure if TBS aired or not. “Now I know what chicks feel like”
http://tinyurl.com/9gjccc5
omg – Timmy, you are a bad, bad boy!!! Hahahahahahahahaha!!! (btw – not *this* chick!)
Some of the comments are hilarious – the one about how Buster spent the day, and if the the girls complain that it burns like champagne, Timmy might want to go see a doctor…priceless!
those comments are cuh-razy!!!!!
Hilarious.
I admit, I do love me some Timmeh…
That really is pretty funny. We DO have some real characters. Love it. Love him. Love them.
Hilarious. I LOVE this team! They are STILL a bunch of Misfits! But, they are OUR Misfits! Would not want it ANY other way!
Well, we might all keep in mind that the Nats and St.Lous are both far better hitting teams than Cincy. *We* are a better hitting team than the Reds…
Right now, MadBum is the worst starter ( by quite a bit )which is why I’ve reconsidered on Zito despite the start against the Reds. And no way I give the Game 4 start to Tim, who would only get the one start that way. Regardless of how Tim fares, Bochy absolutely cannot have one of his two proven big game pitchers start just once in a 7 games- nor can he make Tim into Guillermo Lincecum. Managers rarely get canned for going with his best. They get canned for going with their third best while their best spits out sunflower seeds in the clubhouse.See Baker, Dusty..Matt won’t have his full rest for game 1, and if it goes 7, he’s the guy I want pitching it. I’m now with Vogelsong, Lincecum, Cain, Zito in that order.
This is all in my ever changing opinion, of course..
As far as Hamilton, I can’t imagine Sabean takng the risk with him.
Trying to re-sign Pagan has become an important decision. Before i go into that, I have not seen much about the flip side to Pagan’s great catch in the 8th. And please don’t attribute this to anything but unbiased observation. Torri Hunter made an an almost identical effort in the 2006 NLDS series against the A’s- and missed it. Might have cost the Twins the series. The Twins had tied the second game 2-2 in the 6th. With a runner at first and 2 out Hunter dove for drive by Kotsay when he could and should have let it fall in front of him.It skipped past him and Kotsay circled the bases for a 2-run inside the park HR. The A’s added a run in the 9th and won 5-2.Yesterday was not exactly the same and I can understand Angel’s statement that he would have stopped that ball with his teeth if need be- the play was to let the drive drop in front of him, giving up one run. If it had got past him, the score might have been 6-5 with Navarro on third. Or even tied if Pence couldn’t keep it from going to the wall. That’s the level headed break down- my reaction when I finally saw it a few minutes ago- “Awesome play, Crazy Horse..”
but back to signing him. He’s going to get mininum 8 mill, quite possibly 10, and minimum 3 years. IMO. And Pence infliences this. It may sound strange- but I’d be more incined to try to keep Angel if we also exercised he opton to keep Hunter. But my guess is Angel gets moee than we offer. The OF is going to be a big project for Sabean…
CC used 18 pitches to go through 2 innings of Baltimore Batters.
I think the ump has a manlove thing going on with Sabathia
I know with today and tomorrow off news will be hard to come by, but has anyone heard about Affeldt’s wrist after that dugout fall?
edd – everything I have read Affeldt says it is no big deal. But, you know how these things can be. Hopefully he is truly ready to go.
They are taking extra precautions with Affeldt with frozen hamburger patties and knives right now,but other wise he should be good to go.
Affeldt’s children have also been sequestered as well.
Balt trying to get back in this 2 on none out, top of the 8th. (3-0)
I see Chavez is working out real well. Rondo Girardi made a great call with Ibanez and pushed it too far. They may win this but it’s hardly as if A-Rod was the only guy sucking. Rodriguez is an easy guy to dislike but Girardi went from genius to idiot real fast.,..even more reason to hope the O’s pull this out… although Bochy vs. Girardi would be a rout..
Shit. 3-1.
I’m fine with the Yanks moving past the Orioles. The story would have been a great one if Baltimore had prevailed but there are lots of things to look forward to if we get to face the Yankees in the WS. Let me preface this by saying I think we are a much better team than the Yanks. As most of you know, I follow them closely, I see AT LEAST 50-60 games a year. And if you’ve forgotten, I don’t like them or root for them I’m just drawn to watching their whole *scene*.
So i think we will dominate them and I’ll give a detailed breakdown later of why if it looks like it’s going to happen.
I also think that we need to play *the best* to get some legit national recognition. They are far from the best but they are considered the *yardstick* each year based on nothing more than their own, hubris-driven expectations as well as their payroll. And I want ALL of the nation’s eyes on that match up, should it come to pass. There is NOTHING like the energy of a Yankee World Series and few crowds bring more energy to a game than Yankee fans. And they are smug as fuck, they’ll be easy to hate.
It would be an electric world series that I am pretty sure we’d win……..
I want the fucks in it, so we complete 1/2 of our World Series revenge tour (A’s are out, so no go there this year).
i agree and simultaneously said it, unknowingly (unknowingly simultaneous).
I wasn’t totally in on Pence, but am now. I am all for bringing back Pagan . . . He is the Crazy Horse and you have to love that passion. He showed he can perform under pressure. I think with another year at the Phone Park, he only gets better defensively. I also want Melky back if he is reasonable about a contract. The fuck is only 28 years old. I could give a rat’s ass that he took steroids. Hello? They all do some sort of PED in my mind . . . He got caught, so that’s the difference. Bring him back and our outfield is set. Don’t bring him back, then I want the CLOWN!!!!!!! YES, WE BRING BACK BOZO’S NAMESAKE AND SON, CODY ROSS! 🙂
I also wasn’t totally in on a 37 year old 2nd baseman . . . I was wrongo and I am now sold. So, you try to resign Scutaro and you say, adios Mr. Freddie Sanchez.
Stephen Drew, who is 30, has a $10 Million mutual option with a $1.35MM buyout . . . I like Crawdad, but why not try to secure another infielder and let them compete? Theriot, who is 33, is a free agent as well. Do you keep him or count on Arias? Or, do you try to keep everyone that you have and stand pat? I like Stephen Drew’s game and if he is available, I suspect he plays much better after the serious injury he had in 2011.
Interesting. I meant to ask; we’ve seen Brian Wilson in the dugout; is Franchez there? Hope so. I’d sing arias with and for Arias. Keep Pagan, but not Melky bc too much weird history that would be unsettling. But Cody Ross? Yes in a NY minute. Even a laidback SF minute, like totally.
Not certain Pawlie . . . I would imagine he is in there. Perhaps, he’s still rehabbing his shoulder, arm and/or back?????
and of course yes to Scutaro
How much would you be wiling to pay Marco, Pawlie? He’s 36 and making 6 million now. Not saying they shouldn’t pursue him, just how much they shouild go.
Melky is not a top player without PEDS. He’s a .270 7 HR .700 OPS player.
I would on the one hand take pleasure in seeing the Yankees eliminated by the Tigers but also would welcome the *electric world series* that would be a repeat of 50 years ago, 1962. Yeah, bring ’em on. let’s exorcise that 1-0 Game 7 demon forever. First things first. Need to beat the likely foe: the Nationals, winning 3-0 in the first.
Nice Class Act by Reds Joey Votto after the series. He was talking to sports reporters, and said: Hope most of you cast your vote for Buster Posey as MVP.
“He’s the heart and soul of that team with his leadership” He’s the MVP no doubt in my mind.
that’s cool; I wish I were that sort of person in real life; at times I found myself irked by Brandon Phillips but, hey, if he were on my team, he’d be liked. He’s cocky and spirited. Ron Darling flatout called him the defensive 2B in the game. I heard he once came into a town, tweeted something, and joined some people for dinner or something, just like that. here’s what surprised me: yesterday in the 8th or 9th on a popup in the harsh sun he laughed after saying to Cozart, You want that? That was crazy at that point with all the pressure. Crazy but somehow admirable.
Yes, quite admirable and generous of Joey.
I have no doubt that he’s the team and NL MVP. Votes for league MVP are cast before the postseason, however,
I don’t think Freddy’s there. Bee-wheezy is there because he’s a fuckin’ camera whore and this is the time for that. Plus, by all accounts, he’s one of the most popular, gregarious players on the team. I think Freddy is the exact opposite of all of that. Plus, as I said back in March, I think his career is over while Wilson’s will resume big time next year.
if Bee-wheezy’s a camera whore, I must be an ink ho.
Ho
I think Wilson believes he’ll be added to the roster and throw from the mound for the first time Sunday.
Saw Blade at golds today. We discussed who we’d rather face. He said Cards, I said Washington but at the end of the conversation I really had no opinion who we face.
Just watched Werth hit a lazy fly ball to CF and the crowd reacted like it was a bomb (till it got caught). Newbie fans, young players, I really don’t think the Nats have it in them to advance past us. I also think our SP is better.
But whatever, bring it on….
The pebble in my shoe, well two pebbles, with the Nationals for me has to do with their GM Ratso Rizzo; 1. The smarmy way Riggleman was treated. i listened to the episode unfold while in DC last year, or was it the year before? 2. The duplicity and phoniness about Strasburg. i saw “phoniness” not because concerns were not legit but because they were not honest, as Blade said. So, Rizzo, which was it? Emotionally wrung out or arm injury threat? If the latter, what was the evidence? At this moment, the Nats are cuh-uh-rushing the Cards.
Pawlie, that’s what torqued me about the situation – first Rizzo said he was emotionally wrung out, but now he is going back to the arm injury risk. Make up your mind.
Flav, thank you again – those 3 passes have kept my girlie figure toeing the line (grin). Improvising with some of the unfamiliar weight machines have also shaken up my routine, e.g., I was frickin’ sore as hell after the last workout and barely recovered for today’s session. Much appreciated!
Yeah, I like the Cards because our pitchers have done well against them . . . significantly less so with Washington, as I alluded to in one of my earlier posts. However, fuck it . . . We’ll dance with anyone.
the passes are there as long as you’re in the Bay Area. Sorry there are so many dudes, as you can see it’s a gym that doesn’t cater to all of the pomp and circumstance of the fake gym goer just looking to get laid or for some beat material…….
Looks like we are facing the Nats, St Louis is beaten…….
Looks like we are facing the Nats, St Louis is beaten…….
Oops!
After Harper just hit that bomb the camera showed a guy holding a sign that said “Nats Score”… Now, the obvious first reaction is, how much of a simple fuck do you have to be to come up with such a basic sign? Shit, that might even be a step below the guy holding up the “Applause” sign….
Anyway, I have 4 words for the Nats when we face them:
We score we win
phuckin A yes
Well, we score better on the road than they do at home so in that regard the Nats have the home disadvantage, as I believe Chuck said.Even without Strasburg they pitch awfully well, however, At their best, our starters are still better, I think. At their best-we need to see that. And I think we need to beat Gio one time.
Just as long as we don’t play like the July 4 series in DC. We won’t. We’re a different team. And we fear no one.
It’s also unlikely to be 168 degrees.
This is why I hate the Cards – going to lose just to fuck me out of a chance to go to NLCS!!! Fuckers! (please excuse the profanity – I know this is a family-oriented blog)
Fuck Bozo!!!!
lqtm. Jean, your humor is the BEST here. You go girl!
Blade, only guests on Oprah say,”you go, girl,” but we’ll give you a pass just this once, because you’re back in the Bay area, which has nothing to do with anything.
OK, call me clueless, i.e., why only on Oprah? Did I do some sort of cretin caveman moronic male faux pax?
No, Blade, just the opposite. Real men say, say, “Way to go, kid.” No, that’s not right. I don’t know. Forget it. What-effing-ever. I wouldn’t take anything I say too seriously.
We just love it when you talk dirty (which is different from talking Dirrrrty). Game not over. Cards scored 1. And we know how quickly a 6-0 score can end up looking not so close at all in a matter of minutes.
See you during the game, bring your Flap sign
GO GIANTS! BEAT the NATS!
finally, someone is willing to take a stand against the propaganda fed to the general populous, those brain dead lemmings inhaling the same common, misguided message…..
For some reason, I miss DJ Loo more than ever right now………
The Cardinals remind me of the Redskin teams of the ’80s and early ’90s. They’re never super-great, but they usually field a team that plays at a certain level, and if the other teams are all kind of struggling, they find a way to get there. The Redskins won those three Super Bowls with three different QBs, none of them particularly all that great, unless you were a big Joe Theisman fan.
On the show “Big Bang Theory,” Leonard, joining in the excitement of watching the big game on TV with the gang, painted the message “GO SPORTS!” on his belly. When questioned on that, he said: “That’s in case everyone wants to change the TV channel at some point to a different sport.”
the writing for the show is incredible.
Love that show. I got Gail a couple of seasons of the DVDs for Xmas last year.
Maybe 6-0 leads aren’t what they’re cracked up to be. Now it’s 6-3. See, if the Nats had only hit that extra point they’d be golden right now.
A clear advantage in mojo for the Giants over the Cardinals is that Neil Young is a quasi-Bay Area guy these days, and his book is at #7 this week in its second week on the NY Times non-fiction bestseller list, and LaRussa’s book is at #22 on its second week.
I forget who said it here, but yeah, being on the negative side of that 3-game sweep in DC still sticks in my craw as well, but not even so much about the games — the Giants are SO much better now than they were then that it’s not relevant anymore. What made me hate the Nats (when I previously had no opinion of them) was watching/hearing those games while visiting my folks back east and listening to the Nats announcers. Beyond arrogant, beyond condescending, actually laughing at the Giants, the worst homer-ism I’d ever heard, pretty much handing the World Series trophy over to “their” team in July. Fuck ’em. Now I really don’t care who’s up next for the G’s…. I just want to crush ’em, whoever they are. I fear the Nats more than the Cards, but obviously either team will be a challenge, and just as obviously, SF can beat ’em both. Wind it up, baby…..
I was the one who made the comment on the Nat’s sweep of us. But the more I see comments like yours (and others), I agree (that the Giants are much better now and I could give a fuck who we play next).
I know Flavor and others were kicking around the YankMees name for a WS foe, and I mentioned that a week or so ago. I would love to see that match-up. Giants owe those fucks one, too.
Bring on who the fuck ever.
Let’s GET IT ON!
Whatever happens the rest of the way, and eliminatuon is fine with me, I’m happy to see Matheny have some success his first year.
Nats one strike away.
Damn…Molina with the walk. Go ahead run comes to the plate.
Wow…not sure where that pitch was.
Damn…two down, top 9, Cards with bases juiced. Fuck, Cards just tied it with a base hit and they have the go ahead run on 3rd. Un-fucking-believable.
Can only hope some of you are watching this. I could give a fuck who wins, but what an entertaining game.
They just panned the Nats’ dugout, and it looks dismal and grim. They lead this game 6-0 at one point. If they lose, what a fucking meltdown!
Holy fucking shit! Another hit…Cards take a 2 run lead. Wow.
the plane turned around…..
spectacular top of the 9th.
Well… I said I didn’t really care who wins this game, but as I sit here watching the Nats suffer a bit, I find myself feeling happy about that. Only wish I could hear the gnashing of teeth among those fucking Nats announcers I learned to hate so much in July….
Bring on the Cards!
I told my wife when it was 6-4 that the cards aren’t dead until you put a stake in them. so there we are.
I hate the cards.
It’s on.
