Melky Scores 2 Year Deal in Toronto

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 16, 2012

So lemme get this straight:

the way to score 8 million bucks a year is to cheat, get caught, bail on your teammates without even saying goodbye to them and then try to cover the whole thing up with a lame brain fake website.

Must be the blue print for success in Toronto cause they’re eatin’ what Melky’s cookin.’

“MelkMen and MelkMaids” in Toronto? As I understand it, they roll with “MilkBags” in Canada……..

I wonder what the costumes will look like?

In case anyone missed this on the last thread: Baggs tweeted — Melky Cabrera is going to Toronto for two years and $16 million, according to ESPN Deportes.

And D&R: It just so happens the Giants play the Jays four times next year, splitting two home and away.

I didn’t check the schedule before I posted that. It would be great if the Melk Men and Melk Maids came in funeral attire for that series.

seems a lot of pundits think a little testosterone wasn’t that big of a boost to the melkman’s output. He is listed as the 18th best FA and on a par (with a similar contract) as coco crisp got last year.

Toronto is really making a push this off season, hope they keep a backup nearby.

Yeah, I figured Melky’d get his. No harm, no foul for him, really. He got a little vacation, he’s back in the game, and he gets a fucking World Series ring. Maybe the Giants will use the delivery guy that tried to deliver Ryan Braun’s piss sample to the lab . . . “Sorry dude, can’t find the ring. Let me check my fridge . . .”

Ohhh my GOD!!! I’m like freaking OUT!! Twin wants Buster in LF!!

Just because we had the water buffaloes in the outfield doesn’t mean it’s a great idea for Posey. Maybe once in a while (5 games a year?), but as a ‘rest’ for him from the demands of catching? Ludicrous. The Giants have a lot of flyball pitchers, and he won’t get much rest chasing shit around left field. If we don’t sign Scoots, put him at 2nd.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on November 16, 2012 at 11:49 am

playing left field is INFINITELY easier than catching. Go put on catcher’s gear and then sit down in a squat position for 30 seconds and then stand back up. Do that 250 times. Then let someone punch you in the face a few times. Then sprint about 90 feel 20 times or so (backing up first base).
Compare that to Burrell who spent most of his time courting pussy in the left field bleachers, during games, and I think we know which position is harder to play……

LMAO…I am with you, BF. LF for a few games WOULD NOT be a big deal for Buster. And, it leaves Belt at 1st. Like I said before, I think the Giants are STRONGEST with Buster behind the dish, Belt at 1st, and a “player to be named” (now NOT Melky) in left (I prefer Blanco as a 4th, and off the bench as a late-inning defensive replacement/pinch-runner). Posey is a fucking supreme athlete, and playing a handful of games in the OF would be NO fucking big deal.

Well, its more money I thought Melky would get per year, but it’s a short deal, so Toronto gave itself some risk protection that way. If he had not failed the test, he’d be getting 3X that length of deal. As for Pagan, his price just either went up, and/or got less negotiable with the Giants…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on November 16, 2012 at 1:18 pm

Yeah, interesting. I am not sure how I think this impacts the Giants signing of Crazy Horse.

  8. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on November 16, 2012 at 12:41 pm

BTW. yeah, I’ve never watched other MLB left fielders. Not one. Oh, maybe one. Posey’s not quick enough. Not for a regular LFer on this team. The Giants. If he’s on an AL basher team, probably he’s OK, sort of. Not on this team, in this park, even on just a PT basis. Did I say that LF was more demanding physically than catcher? No. I did say there’s no way Sabean puts Posey in LF with the injury risks out there that are different than at the C position. Running, cutting, sliding for catches, running into walls, running into the CFer, etc. offers a different injury risk profile than catcher. If Buster turns into the first LFer I’ve ever seen next year, fine. I’ll say I was wrong, and go get ’em Buster…

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on November 16, 2012 at 1:21 pm

I beg to differ and think it (Buster in LF “ON OCCASION”) would be no big deal…and it leaves Belt at 1st. If you move Buster from behind the dish, I think this is the second best scenario as far as the team being “stronger.”

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on November 16, 2012 at 1:38 pm

        No need to beg. 😉
Depends on what “On Occasion” is. Every 10th game, eh maybe. 2 out of every 5, I don’t think so…

you didn’t say it, I was responding to what chuck said

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on November 16, 2012 at 12:48 pm

Well, it’s plainly obvious that LF is easier than catching. That’s not the point. The point is, LF is pretty roomy, esp with the Pagan (or whoever) cheating toward triples alley in CF. It’s bad enough putting Posey at 1st base. If they want to rest him, they should REST him. Or give him Barry’s barcalounger for the OF.

Did it ever cross the Giants mind to put Pablo at catcher, and Big Titty in LF? Sure, it’s easy, Benjie . . . don;t mind those guys running in circles on the basepaths.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on November 16, 2012 at 1:22 pm

That’s fucking ludicrous, and not even realistic…whereas Buster in LF is not a stretch.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on November 16, 2012 at 2:25 pm

I agree, Buster and Benjie in the same breath is a joke.
Look, this guy played a steller 3rd base in college, I believe he also played some at SS and 2nd. Good athletes can play all over the field. he could handle LF if he worked at it.

Point is , as we were reminded in the postseason, G’s are about top pitching and great defense. Think about all those game saving plays Blanco made. Don’t see Posey in the OF except in an emergency fill in situation.

  13. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on November 16, 2012 at 1:24 pm

Look, I get the pitfalls of playing LF. I’m not saying make Buster a standard out there…but IF you want to give him a break from behind the dish AND keep him in the line-up, I think it a BETTER alternative than him at 1st, and Belt in LF. That’s all…

  14. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on November 16, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Just my opinion, but why would anyone want to move the best catcher in MLB to another position? He’s a fucking baseball player and some of you guys act like his nickname should be “Glass” (Did anyone ask Freddie if someone else could take his nick?).

Again, just my opinion, but move him to another position he likely becomes ORDINARY.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on November 16, 2012 at 1:57 pm

Blade – look, over the three years of Buster’s career, almost 20% of his plate appearances have been at 1B. 991 at C, 241 at 1B, and 12 as a DH. The Giants did this to alleviate the stress of squating behind the dish. I don’t see that trend changing. I think we ALL agree that the Giants are BEST with him behind the dish. But the reality is they will continue to move him around in an attempt to keep him fresh. As you like to say….”Book It!”

So, my point was. If you are going to move him from behind the plate (AND keep him in the LU), then the team is stronger with Belt at 1B, and Buster elsewhere (hell, that could be 3B, LF, whatever).

It WILL continue (him getting moved around in an attempt to keep him fresh). So, pick your poison…where other than C makes the Giants stronger (rhetorical question)….

      • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on November 16, 2012 at 1:59 pm

Or perhaps it ISN’T a rhetorical question. So, if Buster is in the LU, and he IS NOT catching, outside of LF and IB where would you play him?

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on November 16, 2012 at 3:45 pm

For breaks, where the goal is to keep his bat in the lineup, no question – move him to first or the outfield. However, if we hit consistently, like we did in the second half this last season – put his frickin’ ass on the bench and give him a real break.

By the by, my earlier point was entirely in regard to switching him permanently to another position. You do that, then he isn’t the greatest thing since sliced bread in my opinion.

I don’t think so. I think they also must make a qualifying offer (which they DID NOT with any of the FAs). Here is a link to an article from the BASG that speaks specifically to this:

Twin, from the previous thread, I was trying to post the YouTube vid of the Giants fight song but wasn’t having much luck. What posted was my entire “Sports” folder from YT.

Chi, that Johnson home run game was a great one no doubt. I wasn’t there, but the excitement and eletricity from the park came through loud and clear on TV. I was jumping up and down in the TV room. When you look back over your baseball watching career it’s amazing how many stellar moments like that there are. The Giants didn’t win the Series that year, but that day they beat the hated Dodgers at the Stick, to win the division. How about Beck getting of the bases loaded jam in the 10th? Pretty cool.

Yes…I mentioned Shooter’s (Beck’s) appearance in the top of the 10th. That was almost as exciting as Brian Johnson’s HR to win it. Definitely cool. When you have toiled for years and years as a Giants fan, waiting and hoping for a WS title, it didn’t take much to get the excitement level up. And now? Wow…I still have to almost pinch myself sometimes…wondering “did it really happen?”

Someone the other day asked me about Bonds’ status with the Giants, and I said: “Well….’outcast’ isn’t too far off the mark.”
There will probably never be a Barry Bonds statue at the ballpark. I’m more sure of that than ever. They didn’t invite him to ride in either parade. That says a lot. He’s an inconvenient fact in the team’s history. He has all those plaques on the walkway by McCovey Cove, but the team has no desire to have him hanging around.

I hear ya, Chi. It’s an amazing and wonderful thing that has happened for us Giants fans. All those years of following the Giants have led up to this incredible and magical time in the team’s history, and we’re all part of it as loyal fans who stuck with them through it all. It’s something that no one can ever take away from us. The players get the rings, but we get something very cool, too- an inner happiness, pride, joy, and satisfaction that we earned for sticking with them. It’s just a game, sure, but it’s such a GREAT game, that brings out so much human drama and character. When I wear my Giants swag, it makes me happy to wear it. It’s as simple as that.

I used to feel the same way. Until 2012 happened. He won the batting title and his OPS was 4th in all of MLB (6 points behind Trout) that type of production is wanted at any position.

  21. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on November 16, 2012 at 2:48 pm

I know some of you here feel otherwise, but I hope Melky does well in Toronto. I’ve got no lasting pissiness towards him. He got caught, period. He’s surely not the only one using in MLB, he just got caught. Braun got caught, he just didn’t get suspended via a technicality. The Brewers welcomed him back no problem. The whole thing about Melky not apologizing to the players and all that is still vague to me as to what happened and why that matters at all, but whatever. The claim that he embarassed the club rings hollow after they tolerated Bonds and his alleged roiding for years, his poisoning presence in the clubhouse for years, all the time we lapped up his exploits while most of the rest of baseball loathed him and heaped scorn on the organization. Melky helped us win in the first half, and I’m glad he did. If he keeps using, and gets caught again, well, then he’s just doubly stupid, and the Jays, too, for paying him so much. I would have welcomed him back, but at a far less rate of pay. He’d be at least as good as Blanco. Instead, we’re lobbing speculation now about Buster playing LF…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on November 16, 2012 at 2:58 pm

As with any player who leaves I really don’t give a shit about how Melky does in Toronto. I’m interested to see how he’s gonna do without steroids and will certainly follow his season–but I don’t really care how he does–You have to assume that mlb will be all over his ass but truthfully I don’t know what the testing procedures are.
I wouldn’t just assume Melky would be *at least as good as Blanco*– In his last pre-steroid year his OPS was .671 and he had 7 stolen bases. Blanco’s OPS this year was .676 and he had 26 stolen bases. And I’m not looking up their uzr’s because I think that stat has a bunch of holes in it. But I would guess that Blanco plays a better LF than Melky (though I know Melky played a solid LF).
Plus, Blanco has none of the baggage that Melky would have if he returned…..

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on November 16, 2012 at 3:05 pm

Well, I can’t argue with you about the baggage. We’ll see how well Blanco does. He played great D in the POs and had some clutch hits, ’tis true. But, his offense went AWOL for several months in the summer, and that got Pagan back to the LO spot. He had a bad habit of striking out in contact situations, too. I would be very surprised if they leave Scottsdale next year with him as the starting LFer. As far as Melky’s testing goes next year, I don’t know if a first time offender gets more testing than anybody else. My guess is no, as in you’ve done your penance, so you’re back into the routine protocols…

Pawlie, do you know this guy?

Should he be applauded, or hounded from office? I say leave him be, with a reprimand for, something. He didn’t do anything illegal, and didn’t lie in an official capacity. He must be doing a decent DA job, else why re-elect him? A Google search and a link or two shows he may have “acted” with Georgina Spelvin. Now, that is some street cred right there…

CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — A district attorney in upstate New York has admitted that he acted in pornographic movies in the 1970s then lied when questioned about it during his second campaign.

Mark Suben, the DA in Cortland County near Syracuse since 2008, held a news conference Friday to say he had lied about his past in the days before this year’s election.

“Recently materials have been circulated alleging that I was involved in the adult film industry about 40 years ago in New York. Those allegations are true,” he said. “I was an actor in adult films for a short period in the early 70s. I was also an actor in other venues including off Broadway, soap operas and commercial advertisements.”

He apologized for his actions and said he used “bad judgment” by acting in porn and by lying about it. He wouldn’t take questions, including whether he should resign. On his way out of the news conference, several people said “You lied to me, Mark.”

    • dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnomo said, on November 16, 2012 at 4:12 pm

I would say the soap operas were the bad judgement but that’s just me.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on November 16, 2012 at 5:19 pm

well, the fact that he lied about it is the deal breaker for me. If this had just come to light, whatever, everyone has a past and what not.
But who you elect is a personal choice and as a voter I have the right to NOT vote for someone if I question anything about how they live their personal life—it’s an extension of their beliefs and as a voter I’d look at their background, especially way back in the 70’s when they were just living their life and not worried about a public face. and decide if I want that dude representing my district.
Plus, 70’s porn was atrocious. Bad judgement? No shit it was bad judgement. If those 70’s actors saw what was gettin’ hit in today’s porn world they’d blow their brains out for missing out on all that. 🙂

Off topic, sort of, since we are talking about milk . . . and what goes with milk? Hostess Twinkies, Wonder Bread, Dolly Madison donuts, etc. I understand that Hostess just went bankrupt and for me, that’s the end of an era of bad (perhaps, radioactive and carcinogenic) food. I remember when I was 6-9 years old, that I would go on a rant if my mom put my peanut butter and jelly on anything except white Wonder Bread. Same thing with a Twinkie in my Batman lunch bucket. Wheat bread? Patooey!

Of course, I’ve since been educated about the propaganda shoveled by the processed food industry and try to eat a bit healthier fare. 🙂

And another thing about Blanco— he hadn’t ever played a full season of MLB before (other than as a back up)— I don’t think he knew the rigors of it. And he really impressed me in the playoffs, he showed up and was invaluable on mlb’s biggest stage.
I know it would be a risk, he could tank again as he did through the middle of last season, but he’s cheap and I’d be fine with The White Shark starting for us next year.
If we don’t sign Pagan though, going with an outfield of Pierre/Blanco/Pence is not inspiring me………

  32. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on November 16, 2012 at 5:49 pm

I think it’s fantastic what Toronto is doing– they’re looking at their division and see the Red Sox in obvious re-building mode and the Yankees are a train wreck waiting to happened next year. Baltimore could easily be a 1-hit wonder and Tampa Bay has stalled a little bit in their ascension to the top of the AL East—The Blue Jays just said *fuck it* if there’s ever a time to go for this it’s now. They still could use another front line starting pitcher and it wouldn’t surprise me now AT ALL if Soriano signed with them to be their closer.
    They’re all-in, I fucking love it.

Here’s a portion of Josh Levin’s somewhat humorous article over at the Slate website:

Miguel Cabrera’s voters are ink-stained traditionalists who long for a time before nerds ruined baseball by explaining how it worked. Analysts who embrace modern statistical analysis—folks like Nate Silver, Dave Cameron, Jonah Keri and Keith Law—favored Trout over Cabrera in large numbers. In their in-house poll, for instance, the staff of Baseball Prospectus chose Trout as the AL MVP by a vote of 28 to 1.
But who cares what those guys think? As of 2012, none of them get a vote. The BBWAA’s voting system empowers baseball’s most-conservative voices and disenfranchises those with non-prehistoric views. If presidential elections were decided this way, Mitt Romney would’ve won in a landslide, earning the support of the council of elders the nation had entrusted to make such a weighty decision: Charles Krauthammer, William Kristol, and George Will.
Trout’s supporters should be heartened by the fact that this is one election where the winner doesn’t get any political capital. Cabrera—who declared on Thursday that he was worried he might lose because of “the new thing about computer stuff”—will not be empowered to ban advanced fielding metrics and make WAR illegal. Eventually, reason will win out over superstition, the conventional wisdom will change, and the nerds will become the establishment. The voters of 2012 will not decide who wins the MVP in 2032, and for that we can all be thankful.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on November 16, 2012 at 6:21 pm

Flav, I understand now what you mean about their floor. None come to mind immediately, but your description of their floor is reminiscent of a few others I’ve seen too. I obviously don’t know this for certain, but I think males end up selecting these color schemes (see Miami Marlins team colors), when they should hire a female to do it. Just like Horace Stoneham should have hired a feng shui expert when he was looking for a location in San Francisco to build his baseball park. We all know how it turned out at Candlestick Point.

In fact, I have a good personal example – this week I needed to buy some sheets* for my bed. The duvet cover is sort of a light gold stripe scheme and frankly, I didn’t know exactly what color sheets would go with it . . . Of course, I asked the Bed, Bath, and Beyond lady and she told me a light green would go with it. I SHOULD OF HAD A V-8!!!!!! First thing that comes into my mind is the classic Boston Celtics and Oakland A’s . . . Viola’! Problem solved.

    * After I got divorced in 2000, I had to buy sheets because the wife just about got everything except the garage tools. 🙂 Anywho, I had no idea about thread counts and what the fuck that was all about. I bought some 200 thread count sheets, thinking, I am the smartest MOFO in this Walmart store, spotting these sheets for under $20, after being at Macy’s where they wanted about $100 for the sheets they were selling. Fast forward immediately after washing these 200 thread count sheets, they turned into what seemed like burlap on my skin. Ewwwwwwwwwww! Of course, I did what all newly divorced single men do – I called my Mom and explained my predicament. She explained the thread count thingy and I haven’t made that mistake since.
