A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

What Ever Happened To Glass Sanchez?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 22, 2013

Kruk was pretty hard on Theriot this morning on his show saying, “I am 100% certain that he’ll regret retiring.” He also said he was disappointed in him like 3 times.

Scoots has a sore back and I was *disappointed* in the KNBR morning show that they didn’t get around to asking Kruk about it (after they said they were going to at the start of the show.

It made me wonder about Freddy Sanchez and what’s going on with him. Last February (’12)  I predicted he would never play again and it looks like that’s coming to pass. A month ago his agent said that *about 20 teams* had requested his medical records. Those must not look too good. But still I’m wondering, what’s he doing? Is he staying in shape? Can he throw a ball better than Kensuke Tenaka (and by that I mean, can he throw a ball remotely in the direction of the intended target). Has Sabean even considered contacting Glass for one more go as a utility guy?

And what about Juan Uribe? The Dodgers have confirmed that Jazz Hands is NOT being considered as a replacement for Hanny Eye Goggles. Jeez, he’s hitting .350 this Spring, how far down on the depth chart has he fallen? Would Sabean ever do a deal with his old buddy Ned and bring Uribe back for a final year? Personally, I think the Dodgers wouldn’t want to risk a Uribe revival in a Giants uniform–even if the Giants paid his salary (which they shouldn’t do and probably wouldn’t do).

Still, it would be great to see either of these back in the clubhouse instead of players I don’t know or care about like Abreu or Cedeno or whoever…….

I wouldn’t mind seeing Sanchez but even if he starts out healthy how many games would he really give the club over the course of the season? 50? I guess he would get league minimum so at least Sabean wouln’t be flushing another 5-6 million. Of the two you mention, personally I would rather see Uribe. Despite his stint in blue I love that guy. He brings an attitiude that a club needs and can play more than one position. Sure he hasn’t performed for the contract he signed with the dodgers but that is their problem. All that ails him is cured by donning the orange and black once more.

Thought Donny Ball was gonna use Jazz over at 1B as AGoz backup? If that doesn’t work they could cut him loose, doubt seriously Glass will be back, but over doctor “Strangeglove “Tanaka I would welcome him back anytime.

Let the past be. These guys were “good Giants” that were big cogs in the 2010 wheel. Bringing them back would be a crapshoot, at best, with their recent histories. I might be convinced to try Uribe at the minimum if there literally were no other good choices, but that is unlikely. I wouldn’t trade anybody for him. Freddy I would just leave alone with the short, but good memories. Just too fragile…

I’m thinking more about Edgar Renteria, who has officially retired…

As a 20 year old, he delivered the game winner in the 1997 World Series. At 33, he delivered the game winner in the 2010 World Series. He became only the fourth player to have two winning hits in World Series history. Yogi Berra, Lou Gehrig and Joe DiMaggio are the others. In the years that bridged those two triumphant moments, few players experienced the range of success and failure, fan admiration and scorn, than what Renteria experienced. An All-Star, a Golden Glover,a hero and a bum…through it all, his teammates paid him the highest compliiment- he was a pro in good times and bad. After the 2010 series, a celebration was planned in Colombia to honor a favorite son who once again made his country proud. Edgar asked instead than money to be donated to flood victims.
So while it’s a farewell to Edgar Renteria the ballplayer, we can be sure that the good works of this humble and good man will continue…I don’t think I need to tell you what these fans were excited about…

Shelf life on these guys is about done, and that includes Theriot. Cards figured out he wasn’t a starting SS, and with SF he couldn’t start anywhere either. The PT demand stuff is ridiculous, and as a long time vet he knows better. Non issue, and we are talking about a back up to the back up (Arias) we already have, right?.
All of above did what they could to help the team win and have rings to prove it. But they are not in giants (and likely anyone else’s) future plans, except for reunion day celebrations.

  9. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 22, 2013 at 8:59 am

Zero interest in Fruckie. Uribe? The Bums aren’t cutting him loose after his big spring and the injury to Hanley. They may not be considering him to *start* for Hanley, but it’s difficult to imagine that they’d move him. I consider Cedeno a perfectly acceptable choice, he had a pretty good year with the Mets in a similar role as he’d have here. No, nothing to “blow your hair back”, but he’s solid defensively and he’s been pretty comparable offensively than what Crawford gave us ( I do think Brandon will continue to improve, my point is Cedeno should be at least acceptable in parttime duty) …

  10. Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on March 22, 2013 at 9:13 am

With Arias being able to back up 3B and SS and with Posey getting playing time at 1B I would take Freddy back as a back up to Marco. He was a good situational hitter in the number two slot, so If he can still play D, yes.

  11. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 22, 2013 at 9:28 am

Arias is only an acceptable defender at third base. They want a guy who can play both middle infield positions.

    • Locojuan's avatar Bozo said, on March 22, 2013 at 9:43 am

I agree that he looked a bit shaky at SS but he did play 50 games there last year and 6 of his 10 ST games have been at Short. So I don’t think the Giants are afraid to use him there, but I think you’re right that they’d rather not.

  12. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on March 22, 2013 at 9:29 am

Salt – I read that article by Baggs where Chone Figgins was mentioned. You would think the way Bochy has been underwhelmed by what he has seen this spring for that final IF spot, that they would have had him in for some eval yesterday. I mean really, can he be worse than Tanaka or any of the others vying for that spot this year…

Cal into the round of 32.
    Next up, Overbearing Blowhard Boeheim.
I would luv for Cal to upset the Orange. This Cal team gets up for the big games. So it’s unlikely, but not impossible. Monty knows what he’s doing, if his guards can penetrate the zone some, then get the Bears big guys some inside shots and get the ‘cuse big guys in foul trouble, they have a chance.
    Go Bears!…

  14. chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on March 22, 2013 at 9:40 am

Just read a piece by Baggs where he says the Giants continue looking around. Said if the season started tomorrow, Valdez would be the utility guy, and also mentioned that Chone Figgins is not in their plans.

  15. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 22, 2013 at 9:59 am

They seem to consider the ability to play SS well the top priority and Valdez is good defensively there. The reason I backed Noonan is that he’s reputed to be good defensively at both middle infield spots. If he starts out well in Fresno, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him up here, sooner rather later, if they don’t go outside for help.

  16. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 22, 2013 at 10:32 am

Baseball Prospectus has an interesting article on the “Blow Up Start” ( defined for this piece as a start where the starting pitcher gives up 5 or more earned) . There’s a not surprising “leader”, Nick Blackburn, who has achieved the distinction of giving up 5 or more in an astounding 40 percent of his 71 starts since 2010. The guy who you can count on? Well, Verlander only gave up 5 or more in 8 percent of his starts. No. No on the Cainer. No no no on Price, Halliday ( sp? ), none of the usual suspects. The dude to count on to keep you in the game is Jeremy Hellickson, who in 64 starts since 2010 has only screwed the poodle 3 times….

A little surprised at Ramirez getting cut loose but he was probably a numbers casualty. His ERA was not good this spring but I remember he was getting lit up in 2010 and it was attributed to the dry air in AZ. Sure enough when he got to the bay area his breaking pitches were sharp and he was effective. No spot for him though and like the article says they gave him the courtesy of being able to catch on somewhere else before the season starts.

Reminds me a bit of when we were all howling at the moon for Bow-Wow. He was destroying the PCL and most encouragingly he was taking pitches, strike outs down, walks up. So he’s off the plane and into the LU in like an hour and it’s backfoot slider like three straight pitches, he swings on top of all three… we coulda put him a plane to Tokyo right then..
