A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Making Due Without The Panda

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 25, 2013

As most of you know, Sandoval was shut down on Saturday when he wasn’t able to play catch—you know, *catch*. That thing you instinctively do when someone throws something at you. He had more x-rays and a CT scan done. Andrew Pavlovic at The Merc opened his blog post by saying:

“Trainer Dave Groeschner said Pablo Sandoval’s X-ray and CT scan revealed nothing unexpected or new, but it’s clear just from the test-taking that the Giants are more concerned about Sandoval’s elbow than they first let on.”

Wow, what a huge surprise.

There seems to be some discrepancy as to what exactly is wrong with his elbow. It’s most often reported that it’s a bone spur irritating a nerve but in an interview with Marty Lurie on KNBR, Bobby Evans said it was a *loose body* that was causing the problem. Guys gotta start getting their stories straight.

Bochy says they “haven’t discussed surgery at all.” Of course they haven’t. Riiiiiight!!!!!!!!

So, the typical bs is getting slung around while everyone prays for a miracle. Meanwhile, days continue to slip by, wasted. Opening Day is 8 days away. All the days up until opening day are basically free recovery days that apparently aren’t going to get used. He’ll probably have the surgery a week or so into the season…

As I said on March 18th, I will “up-play the fuck” out of this disturbing development. Just get the surgery done. NOW.

Arias will probably be fine at third base. But why not do something bold and let Noonan take the starting job in place of Pablo? Sabean doesn’t like to have rookies sit on the bench and for that reason Noonan might get passed over in favor of a re-tread like Betancourt. But Arias is much more familiar with the job of coming off the bench and Noonan would probably be much better playing in the normal flow of a game from start to finish. If you’re gonna take a chance on Noonan, it seems to make more sense to have him starting than playing a utility role and having to enter a game cold in the 8th or 9th inning……

Doctors discovered that Pablo has an additional Hamate bone, this one in the elbow. (Bad joke).

I don’t know if all the additional play that Pablo has put in this year is a cause. But I’d have to think that the Giants will say no to any Winter ball next year.

I think this would be a great time to start working Buster out at Third.

Yeah, this “down playing” it shit is old. They do it with every player, every sport, every time. As you point out, they waste time waiting for a “miracle” to occur and meanwhile, a 1/3, 1/2, or worse, the entire season has been lost. All because they couldn’t make the proverbial “shit or get off the fuckin’ toilet” decision. What a joke.

Also, for the most part, I am with Bozo’s comment about Winter ball, at least as it applies to Pablo. I love the guy, but Sabes should have assigned him to the Kirstie Alley Fat Farm in Palm Springs with a “drill instructor” type personal trainer vs. Winter ball in his home country. You know all kinds of shit is going to go down during winter ball, e.g., booze, broads, late nights, and most important, being fed by Mom’s home cooking – which probably is the primary reason he has done lapped his belt buckle. To me, Winter ball is for players that had a fucked up season or young rookies. As you are all aware, I feel the same way about that farce tournament called the WBA or WBC or whatever it’s called.

Not having Pablo is going to be as bad or worse than losing Buster was 2 years ago. We lose Pablo for a significant amount of time, it’s pffffft time insofar as winning the division in my opinion.

If his “Ulnar Nerve” is causing pain, then it would seem to me that the solution lay in going in and fixing it.If he rests and the pain goes away, what happens in the,say 65th game of the season? The pain comes back….

  4. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 25, 2013 at 7:50 am

well, Kruk’s not worried about it, he just said on KNBR that even if it’s a bone chip the trainer should be able to *manipulate* it away from the nerve. We’ll see……

Well Noah Lowry might have a different opinion about the trainers and medical staff.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 25, 2013 at 9:17 am

Doctors make mistakes, and differing diagnoses of an injury or illness are common- which is why second opinions are sought. Noah’s agent failed to look after the best interests of his client.

I put zero stock in what Kruk says about things like this. He walks the company line and does his best not to rock the boat. BtW hey flappers, I’ve been in a very intensive school program since August and I just don’t have the time to get on here like I want.

According to several sites I have read, if he has “loose bodies” in his elbow and they are removed, he is facing 4-6 weeks out; if it is a bone spur(s) or chip(s), and has it removed, then we’re talking 8-12 weeks. I’m still not really clear on the difference between a loose body – which is loose fragments of bone or cartilage in the elbow joint and a spur is described as being “formed” on the elbow joint.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 25, 2013 at 9:01 am

Bone chips or “loose bodies” are what is implied- they chip off from the bone.Bone spurs are, in effect, new bone formed on normal bone as the body tries to repair itself by building extra bone. Bone spurs are often untreated (as per Mayo Clinic, not Dr. Mike).
I’d like to see more of this statement from Evans, I can’t find it anywhere on the web. I’ll add that Pav’s take that conducting more tests is *not* evidence that they “are more concerned about Sandoval’s elbow than they first let on”. It means that his pain Saturday made more tests prudent.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on March 25, 2013 at 9:26 am

I had a bone spur and didn’t know it until it broke off. the pieces of bone went into the joint, into the cartilage, and I was frigging hurting for about a month. But the “loose bodies” were so tiny they eventually ground down and things went back to normal. x rays alone can usually tell the story on bone spurs and chips and cartilage. Nerve problems are another issue altogether.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 25, 2013 at 9:29 am

IF he has “loose bodies”, it doesn’t mean they existed when the first tests were done.

In the meantime Arias is a capable enough back up who has the experience of last year behind him and does have some occasional pop in his bat. I’d worry Noonan would try to do too much too soon; 3b is a tough position to fill.
John, I’m with you on Sando eventually becoming a LFer, but I don’t want to see Posey anywhere beside C as long as he is healthy. Esp now if Hector isn’t full strength. Posey imo is just too good at what he does to move him around. If SF had a replacement with good D and pitch calling I could see it, but otherwise no.

It is not “playing down” to withhold infomation until all the information is known and it is irreponsible to be performing surgery if it’s not *necessary*.
The full extent of an injury is *NOT* always known immediatey. The medical staff is to be praised for being cautious, not accused of an absurd cover up that would be *against* the interest of Pablo *and* the team.
    IMO.

    • chipower9's avatar chipower9 said, on March 25, 2013 at 9:07 am

I would do a platoon at 3rd…give both Arias and Noonan time there. Noonan had about 25 starts at 3rd in 2011, and another 15 or so last year. His FP is better at 2nd and SS, but I would give him some opportunities at 3rd.

Agree with Michael about his take on the injury (not all the information being known yet, etc.).

Boys head home this week. I’m going to the Friday night game against the A’s (I have always enjoyed the Bay Bridge Series that caps off ST and opens the gates to the regular season) and then a week from Friday…Opening Day!

I actually like that idea about Theriot GH. However, I think someone noted or perhaps, it was a thread that Flav had – he is going to retire unless he is given a gig starting.

  11. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on March 25, 2013 at 10:01 am

I heard Evans with Marty Lurie talk about the “loose body” in Panda’s elbow. That’s a direct quote. He dropped mention of it like everybody already knew about it, when of course, nobody outside the Giants knew until then. Ho hum. Until then, it was ulnar nerve neuritis (inflammation) and then a bone spur, and then “loose body”. = bone chip. Next, will there be multiple chips? The nerve is getting inflamed and irritated because of the bone chip(s) floating around. So, is Kruk going to massage the elbow before every game to keep the chip away from the joint? 3rd base is a demanding throw, it’s not like in Panda’s position he can hide an elbow problem. This surgery isn’t Tommy John, you’re not lost for the season, it’s arthro, and you’re out a month, give or take. Unless they get inside for a look see and something else is going on. I agree with BF, I don’t get why some of these sports teams wait and wait until the wheels come off. Yeah, maybe he can play with the chips all season, but it’s just something waiting to be re-aggravated. Arias can take over 3rd for a month like he did last year. He’s capable, and the team was fine. What if they’re in mid-Sept in the middle of a division race with LA and all of a sudden the chip locks up Panda’s elbow?…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 25, 2013 at 10:24 am

I pay no attention to what Kruk *or* Evans said ,and I would need to hear the full remarks from Evans before I considered them- Groeschner said there was nothing new in yesterday’s tests. None of us are in a position to be advocating surgery. It *might* come to be, but the medical staff is 100% correct to wait until it’s determined be neccessary.

Well, Evans doesn’t say where that info comes from. It’s confusing, yes, but there’s still no logical reason why the team would hide that Panda has bone chips. Beyond that, surgery is not always preferred treatment if he does have them.

  12. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on March 25, 2013 at 10:07 am

Eventually I could see moving Buster to third. He’s played SS in college. He’s got the arm for third, and his mobility will probably be OK over there as long as he doesn’t catch for another 5 years. He’s a great athlete, he could field that position. Panda could probably handle LF. Crap, they had a lumbering Bonds late in his career out there, and Burrell — Panda’s way more mobile and defensively effective than those guys. An outfield of Panda, Pagan, Pence — the Three Ps. They’d need a new catcher, tho’…

  13. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 25, 2013 at 10:08 am

Theriot is a minus defender at SS, decent at second and hasn’t played third since 2007, when he played 54 innings. And Yuniesky, as noted before, has always been in every discussion of who the worst player in baseball is.

  14. xoot's avatar xoot said, on March 25, 2013 at 10:32 am

Pablo’s ulnar neuritis may be the result of over-stretching the nerve–throwiing hard for many months in a row, for example–and may have little to do with any floating chips. I suppose there’s be a combinatory possibility, too, but nerves in the arm can heal with rest. He’s had this problem before and it healed.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on March 25, 2013 at 11:15 am

He’s had elbow issues before, yes. But, the Giants never divulged that he had bone spurs and/or chips. Maybe those issues are new, maybe they’re not and they just kept it on the down low. There must be a reason for them making these details public now…

  15. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 25, 2013 at 10:36 am

I don’t doubt that Evans said something about “loose bodies” but I’m wondering why no one seems to be following up on that. It’s curious that that guys who would jump on it- Baggs, Pav, Henry, have said nothing. At least that I find. Why wouldn’t they?

  16. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on March 25, 2013 at 11:04 am

Someone has posted on both Schulman and Baggs blog/articles about the “loose body” stuff; asking about that development. No response that I’ve seen. Maybe Evans spoke out of turn; spilled untimely beans he should not have. Based on a multitude of past evidence, IMO we should not depend on Bay Area beat writers at all to dig and break news on medical updates on Giants or Niners. If Panda were on a NYC team, they’d be all over this shit since it concerns the top offensive player on the team. Bay Area media obviously don’t do it, or if they do hear something, they don’t divulge until they are either told they can or feel it’s OK to report without pissing off their team contacts. It took SF Chron investigative reporters to get the goods on Balco, not Giants or A’s beat writers. And, after all, by part ownership, CSNBayArea is essentially an arm of the Giants, like Faux News is of the GOP…

Why would they hide that he has bone chips? And if he does have them, whether surgery is the desired treatment depends on, among other things, the size of the fragments.

If it’s going to be a lingering problem, better to take the loss right now than in the middle of the season.. it looks like the Giants are in a wait and see mode – but if he still can’t throw this close to the season then go in there and have the procedure done.. If surgery is what we’re looking at, they’re wasting precious time by waiting.

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on March 25, 2013 at 3:38 pm

Come on, folks. What the doctors are telling us and what they are telling the team and Pablo are completely different things. Chances are he’ll go under the knife, but to say they should have done it weeks ago (or whatever) is ludicrous. Bone spurs can form fast, and break off at any time. Sometimes shutting someone down calms everything else down to the point of being able to resume activity. Usually though, it doesn’t, and surgery is required.

Yes, it IS wait and see. Yes, better now than later, and I’m sure that’s what is being discussed behind the scenes. But to point at malfeasance at this point is way off base.

    One for twin –

Jonathan Sanchez made the Pirates’ rotation, tweets Michael Sanserino of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The 30-year-old posted a 4.73 ERA with a 1.11 K/BB ratio in 13 1/3 innings this spring, but the Pirates saw something they liked.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 26, 2013 at 7:35 am

They saw his last two stellar outings and the return of his fastball. . Maybe Michael Sanserino should pay attention…
His last two outings he pitched 8 innings, allowed 3 H 0 runs 1 BB 7 K..he hadn’t pitched like that all of last year and most of 2011. He pitches today and I’m not suggesting he’s now over all his control issues but a guy with Jonathan’s history of missing bats is going to draw a lot of attention when he shows he what he did in those efforts. What he did do is show enough to make a horrible staff and those outings made it a total no brainer. He might return to suckdom but the Pirates made the only sane decision given their plight.

In the “loose body” interview with Lurie, Evans suggested that Peguero might be better served by opening in Fresno. Although I picked Peguero to win the 5th OFer job, I concur with Evans on that. He didn’t rule out Francisco making the team, but they seem to prefer he’d play everyday. I suspect he’s moved back ahead of Brown and they can see him taking over LF sooner rather than later. He’d be in better position to do that by playing everyday.

I’ve added Malwarebytes to my shared folder, with the product key for the pro version. Download and install the program, open it, and go to “protection”. Then you can choose to activate or register, I forget the actual terminology, but you can then enter the info from the malware key I provided. it should thank you for purchasing. Let me know. This will provide active protection. There’s also a photo of Merna and me when were a tad younger and just as much in love.

With Hector maybe not going on the DL, I’d guess it does mean something.

  36. xoot's avatar xoot said, on March 26, 2013 at 10:30 am

The Buster, Belt, Hector rotation could get some regular use this season. Combine some DH time for Buster during interleague games with some 1B time, and he can hit almost every day without getting worn down from too much day in day out catching. Late inning D substitutions and switches at 1B and LF would be likely in such games. The new interleague scheduling approach may give NL managers a nice new option. Meanwhile, the AL teams will whine through their two strike bunt foul outs.

I agree! Fuck, one of them picked the Padres to win the West…another the D-backs (and that doesn’t seem as much a stretch as SD, to me). Health, as always, will be key. Giants stay healthy…I like their chances to compete and potentially repeat. Not one of the “experts” picked our Giants to win it all…I love the underdog role…flying under the radar, baby!

  40. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 26, 2013 at 12:18 pm

So it begins to appear that the only job left to be settled is the 5th outfield spot between Peguero and Gillespie. Panda and Hector both appear ( as of now) that they won’t be hitting the DL. Arias and Noonan would be the infield reserves. Pen sets up as Gaudin, Mijares, Kontos, Affeldt, Lopez, Casilla, Romo.
I suppose that Sabean might still look for an infielder but Noonan seems to have won the job. Updates on Sandoval and Sanchez remain and could obviously change things but the Spring appears to have gone pretty much as expected- now let’s get it on…

I had said I wasn’t “THAT sure” he would be back, as I think he will have a good year. Good year will translate to a him wanting a long-term deal that I am unsure the Giants will want to meet.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on March 26, 2013 at 4:13 pm

Wonder what the thinking was of those who thought he’d back. He’s probably already cost himself millions in the market unless he returns to CY form, which I consider highly unlikely. And he’s screwed himself out of any shot at In ‘n Out spokesman.
Most projections have him making a nice rebound, 13-10, mid-3 ERA kind of thing. But that’s gonna cost him millions off what he’s making now.

I was a little skeptical at first but his work address checks out at 30 Rockefeller Center and he told me in a follow up email that The Flap was a referral source for him from his editor. He’s probably just the guy who makes initial phone calls to set up interviews for their regular writers but I still thought it was pretty cool. He’s calling me tomorrow when I get off work.
Pawlie, I will of course try to work in you and your book to the interview if possible.
I’m not sure what I think is cooler, the MelkMaid’s answering questions on Comcast that was started with one of my Flap comments about them that was plastered on the Comcast screen or the fact that NBC wants to interview me. 🙂
