I especially like the guy who used three or four different slurs because, as he acknowledged, he didn’t know exactly what ethnicity he was trying to insult.
CONGRATULATIONS MICAH!!!!!
Best for you and the wife & the future Giants starter.
Is he working on his Snot Rocket?
OPENING DAY BABY !!!!
I am so pumped, Let’s go Giants..Let’s go Giants…Let’s go Giants!!!!
I thought I read Wilson was invited to ring ceremony. Just a good will gesture or are they throwing an olive branch his way? According to Chron, *top secret* special guest is to throw out first pitch.
Should be interesting, enjoy Chi and any others attending.
First: congratulations to Dirt for the new arrival, I wish you and your family the best for the exciting years to come…
As to the flag, I don’t care who would want to do it, My nominees are Murph and Cain, as the longest tenured player ( if it’s a player, only home grown will do), Romo’s cuddly PG version of Wilson is too saccharine, Panda would beget too many fat “jokes”, Buster and Timmy would be a good duo except they won’t do it together citing prior engagements ;-), MadBum would blow his nose on the flag, Vogie would be a good choice but he’s already getting into his mad mood for tomorrow, I like the Brandon/Brandon angle but have to defer to a vet..
So it’s Murph or Cain for me. I’m going with Murph…
Actually, it wil never happen, so I didn’t list him, but the man who built ATT should be the guy- Barry Bonds, accompanied by his Godfather…the two greatest players in the history of the franchise…
Somewhat overlooked in the post mortem of Timmy’s start was how many strikes Hector cost him ( last year, Hector gave back 8 runs on framing alone according to BP).Below is a pic, with asymmetrical circles drawn around each of the borderline (or, in some cases, not borderline) pitches that were called balls against the Bums Wednesday. I hope you can all see the video in this BP piece- Hector was beyond dreadful. Essentially, he was an umpire who had money on the Dodgers. Here’s the link to the article.
well Writer is flat out wrong saying Hector usually only catches Tim and rarely anyone else–we all know he served as Zito’s personal catcher last yr. Or has my memory reaally gone to hell?
The chart and videos don’t lie. And your question about Zito and last year- it actually bolsters what has been a weak argument that Zits actually pitched better in the regular season than he did in 2009 and 2010.
I’m not talking SABR stats, BTW. By virtually every figure except W/L, Zits had his 3rd best regular season, as a whole, as a Giant. He had a good September( and, as in 2010, a great April) and, of course, a wonderful postseason. But the significant difference between 2012 and and 2009 and 2010 was superior run support.
Well, I gave you that when I said that Hector’s incompetence bolsters the argument that Zito pitched better in the regular season in 2012 than in 2009 or 2012. It’s really the only even possibly valid argument..
If Romo is the one running the flag out there, he either hasn’t been told yet, or is great at keeping secrets. He was on KNBR this morning, and he said he doesn’t know what’s going to be happening in the ceremony.

Congrats, Dirt and family!!!

interesting chart, TF. Thanks for posting it.
Even more interesting, actually more maddening, were the videos of the strikes that Hector turned into balls. I’m not putting all of Tim’s struggles on poor Hector but when any pitcher, whether it’s because of the catcher or the ump, loses the lower part of the SZ, he’s in big trouble. And the chart makes clear that Timmy got virtually nothing in the lower part of the zone.
Schulman noted that the formal presentation of Buster’s MVP trophy will occur Saturday, with former Giants MVPs participating — McCovey, Mays, Kent. Now that truncated list is an insult of the first order. Cepeda, who was MVP with the Cards may be included, too. Well, maybe we’ll get a surprise.
Barry remains a pariah. Not invited to be in the parades either. It’s kind of a strange situation. To Bonds’ credit, he doesn’t make a big deal about the cold shoulder, in public. He made a huge amount of money, but his baseball legacy has become kind of like dust in the wind.
Barry is sort of like the crazy uncle in the basement. No one knows what to do with him when guests come over. LOL.
Seriously though, his legacy will improve over time. Too many things – both positive and negative – are fresh in everyone’s memory. Only time will smooth out the rough edges.
I would like to see Murphy get it too. He is a bridge to the New York franchise and it would be an appropriate acknowlegement of what he has done for the club. If it’s a player – I would be all right with any of the position starters or any pitcher/reliever as well. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they gave it to Zito. I would have no problem with that. Again, any player getting the honor I am down with, but for sentimental reasons, I would like to see Murph get it.
New blog post. Another few hours and it’s beddie bye for me. By the time I wake up, the Gmen will hopefully have recorded a win against the Cards. I love the fact that regardless of whether we win or lose this (your) evening – the Cards have to sit and watch our WS Flag ceremony and reflect on what could have been for them. Love that shit.
WordPress.com / Gravatar.com credentials can be used.
LOL. You probably wont believe this, but I forgot who I offered to you and perhaps more important, I forgot who I wanted from your team. I looked at so many trade and waiver wire possibilities that my eyes started glazing over. I had to do everything in a one hour internet cafe session, as well as update my other baseball FL team for the next week and my two basketball teams as well. So, enquiring minds want to know – who did I offer and what did I want in return?
By the by, the reason I can’t do this on my tablet is that both the Yahoo and ESPN aps don’t work on my tablet, where I can sign in and consequently, I have to use a REAL computer to accomplish this. I give two shits what CNET, ARM, Samsung, and Apple say about tablets taking over the world – to me, THEY ARE PIECES OF SHIT TECHNOLOGY. Give me a pc any day.
BTW, upon hearing of Mr. Zito’s business acumen, I’ve submitted a proposal for him to purchase 50 percent of my Tuna Squeezer inventory. He’s interested but hopes I’ll go for 49.99 per unit…
I don’t really care who/how they raise the flag. That they’re doing it is the main thing. I wish it were against LA, that would be the best. Anyway, the “who” of it has to either involve Murph (unlikely) or involve only a player or players and coaches that were on the 2012 squad. Using prior star players from other squads would make little sense to me, and if I were one of those and they asked me to participate in a direct way (other that being there to represent the past), I’d refuse to do it anyway since I would have had zilch to do with winning the title…
Yeah, any player or other person not affiliated with the team last year would have to be an idiot (and have a fairly large pair of cajones) to accept an offer to raise the WS flag. However, hopefully that’s an unequivocal moot point, as anyone (Sabean, Baer, or ownership group) in the front office offering this prestigious role to someone outside the 2012 WS team, would BE AN EVEN BIGGER IDIOT.
It was a group effort. Cain Pagan Lincecum Pence Voggy and Romo all took the banner up the stairs, watched from just below by the proud papa Bruce. First pitch thrown by the MVP’s Scutaro and Pablo.
Good Video, Great game. looks like it is going to be a great season if you ask me. Yeah, yeah, only 4 games. Let me live in dreamland for a little while.
That was an inspiring choice for the flag raising. And with some sparkling assistance from Pablo in the field , Zits continues his April excellence. Last year and in 2010 April was the best he’s ever pitched here. I do see a difference though, maybe he *will* pitch into his 40’s.
Pluck yew (the original curse, c.1400s said to be the origin of our well known curse, ask and I will tell the tale)
we don’t get the post(or pre)-game goodies here, before the boys were handshook and off the field I get a “This game is joined in progress” message followed by women’s lacrosse. Or was it field hockey? hard to tell.
Giants baseball- we score, we win. Our shutdown pitching and stellar defense, and cavernous ballpark, all combined to send the Cardinals gumby-shouldered and sad-faced back to their team hotel.
I have a problem with your last 4 weeks of poor behavior here at the blog. I have a problem with the weirdo “Anita” shit. I have a problem with you turning into Denny….
I’ve given you more rope than anyone. Ever. But you need to stop. Now. And I’m not talking about your dumbass comment earlier. If you don’t like this, have Anita pen another email for you
Loo for me personally it has been more about finding someone who can tolerate me. Before that I was lost in many ways. The kids have been a wonderful byproduct of that and they’ve certainly made time pass more quickly.
Zito was nails today, with a crappy balls/strikes ump and a potent Cards lineup.
I gave him shit like most when he was pitching like doggydoo, so I’ll give him credit now. Whatever he changed, I hope he doesn’t change it back…
Haha. Well the majority of fans love him. Many cant get over his pre-2012 failings.
I can get over failings quite easily, especially when you gift wrap a World Series for me. 🙂
On the A’s broadcast, how nice is it to watch some of an A’s game without Fosse on the broadcast. Someone else is the analyst on the broadcast tonight with Glen Kuiper. The A’s are an interesting team. They just might make the playoffs again.
Speaking as an atheist and a father, children as an existential imperative seems like a pretty reasonable position to me.
Romo will not lose his job because of hanging sliders, Barry Z will not pitch any better or worse than he has the past few years, and Brandon Belt will have a better season than Achilles Crawford?
My comment was not intended to be hostile, nor particularly serious. I did not understand the strong reaction directed against Loo for expressing a fairly ordinary sentiment, even though it was a little out of place. I assume in most cases it’s not some definitive belief.
The idea that childless people have lives of lttle meaning is a “fairly ordinary sentiment”? Not among people who *have* lives of meaning it isn’t. Loo got off easy.
I read the comment a little less critically. Ordinary as in the way people care about “future generations” when you know deep down that a myth is a myth.
The similarity to Tim’s outing was that they both began the game at 93MPH and both were mostly 88/89 by the fifth. Dirrrty had just the one walk but the Bums bailed him out by swinging at a few pitches out of the zone with 3 balls on them. The velocity drop is troubling ..
Jonathan did start with the Giants in the bullpen. He doesn’t cost 20 million, and if he has decent command, he could be around a few more years as a pretty good middle inning guy.
Cool, I think you and I were his only steady supporters over the final few years he was a Giant. I hope he plays long enough to live down the head case criticisms.
I am getting a totally fucked up and my local watering hole tonight, but WTF the Giants won their home opener and life is good!!!
Giants Baseball Nothing better, well maybe some great sex!””
The truth about how Barry pitched in 2012 shouldn’t be so hard to digest. “even if they say they love the team”…. who would you say just *says* they love the team?
Anyway, this year he’ll probably get a chance to show he can win 15 again with last years numbers, his 3rd best as a Giant.
I’ll be happy to not respond to the Zito thread , at least I won’t respond to anything Zito related. I know how much Craig admires him, that’s why I purchased his autographed card for Craig’s small thank you gift.
Maybe Loo was referring to himself .Does he have children? It would be quite sad if he considered his existence meaningless because he never had a child.
To extrapolate ‘humans that are not parents have no meaning in their lives’ from the (could have been) statement that parenthood brings additional (unique) meaning to an astronomical number of lives is a leap poorly made, albeit make-able.
Someone arriving at the “realisation” that “if you’re not a parent your life will most likely have very little meaning.” is no different than men realising what it feels like to have new life growing inside you. (or) How many fathers find a transcendent moment (of meaning or whatever) given them by their new child?
Mine came the first time my first son drove off with his mother. That WAS a meaningful moment that dwarfed most other moments in my entire, so far, life.
I do think “MY” life would hold very little compared to what being a parent has given “ME”.
your mileage may vary.
None of the information provided here is official, and it should not be relied on for any purpose
Although this post has my own thoughts, I would sincerely encourage everyone to look for the truth themselves.
And then there is this father:
“Bee ITCH, I’m a player and you ain’t havin’ none of my money, don’t be comin ’round here!”
Ed, I sometimes have trouble unraveling your brilliant nutty posts, you surely can’t be agreeing that childless couples have lives of little meaning. I have some sensitivity to this, as we have one daughter who is estranged, but that’s an outrageous statement that no one has the right or knowledge to allege about others. It speaks only to the empty life that the person who made the statement must endure.
I don’t really care who/how they raise the flag. That they’re doing it is the main thing. I wish it were against LA, that would be the best. Anyway, the “who” of it has to either involve Murph (unlikely) or involve only a player or players that were on the 2012 squad. I guess I live in an extremely progressive section of American. I couldn’t believe the spectacular ignorance in these tweets that this website put together. People really say this shit?

I’m headed off to work. If you ARE a daddy for the 2nd time, congrats. Again.
great article about Zito

dirt, you a daddy again?
Its a boy! Everyone healthy amd resting. He’s already identifying no dot sliders with ease but Im pulling for a loogy type career.
Congratulations!! I kept putting a ball in the left hands of my twins, alas it didn’t take. I called it daddy’s retirement plan.
Congrats Micah! Glad to hear that your baby is doing fine. I’ll assume Mom is doing well too!
CONGRATULATIONS MICAH!!!!!

those two for a franchise fantastic celebration of the SF two WS
Congratulations Micah! Glad everyone is doing fine. What is his name?
Congrats to Dirt! Should be a few birthday/ opening day parties in his future.
This banner thing is a closely guarded secret I guess.
I could go with the Statue Boys….The 4 M’s…..MAYS..MCCOVEY…MARICHAL…and yes future Stature Mike Murphy.
But I will go with Matt Cain….
Why not Peter Magowan? Would he do it?

Bottom line, IMO- they can’t afford for Hector to catch anybody, let alone a guy already struggling with the SZ.
Begs the question how did Zito manage last yr? Not exactly a strike thrower either.
I really don’t want to talk about that on his big day.
well Writer is flat out wrong saying Hector usually only catches Tim and rarely anyone else–we all know he served as Zito’s personal catcher last yr. Or has my memory reaally gone to hell?

I don’t dispute his numbers weren’t better.
I’m just raising the question that IF Hector makes a guy worse as the writer implies, zito did well just to duplicate his better years.
Well, I gave you that when I said that Hector’s incompetence bolsters the argument that Zito pitched better in the regular season in 2012 than in 2009 or 2012. It’s really the only even possibly valid argument..

Time to drag Hector’s corpse around the playing field.
If you caught Tim’s reaction after the passed ball, he looked like he’d agree.

Meanwhile in Detroit: “Fielder, Verlander, Cabrera behind home plate at Comerica Park to present the AL championship flag.”
Congrats to D&R!
BTW, upon hearing of Mr. Zito’s business acumen, I’ve submitted a proposal for him to purchase 50 percent of my Tuna Squeezer inventory. He’s interested but hopes I’ll go for 49.99 per unit…

Giants raise the WS chanmpion’s flag, and another Giants fan arrives on Earth.
Now, that’s a great day…
That was absolutely fantastic to watch..
CSNBA did a fantastic job with their WS recap video to.. ‘the boys are back’ I’m stoked!
got the comcast feed here in the uik but not the flag raising
and a one minute boys are back was cool
A little Irish flare to it, too.. Pretty damn cool.
Wait, you’re in the UK Ed? I’m a late bird and do a lot of my reading late night.. no wonder why you post late night.
yeah, that’s me
cheers
defence coming through
I’m sorry but you must use the ‘correct’ US English spelling when referencing baseball . . .
I missed it. Did Zito get a rousing standing O?
yes, tell us: what about the flag ceremony? who did it? chills? cheers?
Zito!
Yeah, Mike,, I mentioned yesterday how Sanchez was lunging (lungeing? lounging?) for what appeared to be strikes yesterday. It's annoying as hell.Anyhow who carried/raised the flag? I was in a meeting and I missed it.
looked like bochy and a couple of white haired ladies, but I only saw a disjointed “highlight” from AmyG
Thanks . . .
Crawfish! Nice.
It was a group effort. Cain Pagan Lincecum Pence Voggy and Romo all took the banner up the stairs, watched from just below by the proud papa Bruce. First pitch thrown by the MVP’s Scutaro and Pablo.
Thank you as well.
Huh? What the font?
ya gotta quit cut and pasting
Zito’s quite the offensive weapon these days . . .
I keep watching the web sites – no highlight of the flag trip yet
found it
http://goo.gl/yZEZl
8 minute high light video and accompanying story.
thank ye
Crawford’s approach at the plate has been really nice so far..
Zito into the 8th no runs under 100 thrown
Still no earned runs by a starter…
Pretty sure Zit’s gonna be the pitching coach when Rags retires
Flag raised. Home opener won. A splendid day all around.
. . . and THAT is the best sort of haiku satori fangasm bonanza bonus!
Great video . . .
Wow. Zito pitches another gem. Still no starters giving up any (earned) runs.
Unreal.
Typical Giants win.
Solid to super starting pitching.
Solid to super Pen work.
Super D.
And, timely bases loaded walks to score runs…
living. large.
15 in a row for Zito….
Seeing Kevin Mitchell talk on the post game, I love him, it made this day perfect.
Pluck yew (the original curse, c.1400s said to be the origin of our well known curse, ask and I will tell the tale)

Anyone else enjoy the fact that Yadier’s error helped cost the Cards the game? Just me? (grin)
Thanks everyone for the kind words and to the big club for a home opener victory.
We named him Samuel Ethan.
Sam = Solid…
well wishes, dude.
Congrats, Dirt. I’ve come to the realization that if you’re not a parent your life will most likely have very little meaning.
The Giants play like they expect to win.
And so much for closer by committee.
I’m assuming your first sentence is another dumb joke. I was a big Loo fan, forever, but you’ve fallen into *Denny* territory. Too bad.
It wasn’t a joke at all. What’s your fuckin’ problem, pal?
I don’t see that, BF. It’s just a bit more “serious” Loo these days. (grin)
I have a problem with your last 4 weeks of poor behavior here at the blog. I have a problem with the weirdo “Anita” shit. I have a problem with you turning into Denny….
Loo’s homophobic jokes I could do without; but then again, he’s not the only one on the Flap that does that. Just sayin.’
Scolding me like a child for poor behavior? Unable to distinguish a joke from a true statement?.
Guess who you’re turning into?
I’ve given you more rope than anyone. Ever. But you need to stop. Now. And I’m not talking about your dumbass comment earlier. If you don’t like this, have Anita pen another email for you
I disagree with your first statement, Loo. I think everyone on the planet is on equal footing in that regard, the search for meaning.
Come on, Loo. I hope you’re joking on that first line, like BF said.
The historical list of accomplished people sans kids is endless…
Loo for me personally it has been more about finding someone who can tolerate me. Before that I was lost in many ways. The kids have been a wonderful byproduct of that and they’ve certainly made time pass more quickly.
Okay, no more baby/family talk.
Ah, well, I guess that explains my meaningless existence up until now….
Zito was nails today, with a crappy balls/strikes ump and a potent Cards lineup.
I gave him shit like most when he was pitching like doggydoo, so I’ll give him credit now. Whatever he changed, I hope he doesn’t change it back…
He looks like a confident veteran major league pitcher. It’s unbelievable.
Tomorrow is going to be a post that honors the evolution of Barry Zito. Haters of him, even if they say they love the team, need not respond to it……….
“Haters of him”?? Giants nation LOVES Zito now. It’s like the first 5 years of that contract never happened. (grin)
Haha. Well the majority of fans love him. Many cant get over his pre-2012 failings.
I can get over failings quite easily, especially when you gift wrap a World Series for me. 🙂

Romo will not lose his job because of hanging sliders, Barry Z will not pitch any better or worse than he has the past few years, and Brandon Belt will have a better season than Achilles Crawford?
Fucking iPad, that was not supposed to be a question mark. Agree with Blade!
As a marxists and father of two sons, I think that’s absurd. I can see where this blogs headed as the season starts. Adios.
My comment was not intended to be hostile, nor particularly serious. I did not understand the strong reaction directed against Loo for expressing a fairly ordinary sentiment, even though it was a little out of place. I assume in most cases it’s not some definitive belief.

I have no idea what you’re taking about. Goodnight.
J. Sanchez is pitching well for the Pirates tonight. Pretty cool pitching duel with Greinke.
Sanchez ran into some trouble in the 6th inning, but still, overall, a solid effort.
I was making a realistic appraisal of his outing, which I watched. Just based on the one outing for each, he was far better than Timmy.
A Larry King sighting. 40 year younger gold-digging trophy wife not in sight.
She’s probably out making another man’s life meaningful..

Using prior star players from other squads would make little sense to me, and if I were one of those and they asked me to participate in a direct way (other that being there to represent the past), I’d refuse to do it anyway since I would have had zilch to do with winning the title…
