…But I’m out of town. Nice win last night. Golden State just might win this game today. Think it’s kinda cool that The Red Sox are on a 6 game winning streak. And while I don’t give a rip about the Celtics I will be rooting for them vs the Knicks. Timmy pitching today. Hope he leaves his bad inning in the bullpen.

GS has a solid group of mostly young vets, Jack and Landry off the bench, and rookies who will get a taste of playoff ball Barnes Green and Ezeli. Physicality of Nuggets plus half court defense might be issues, but it will be good experience win or lose the series.
Posey behind plate tonite hopefully makes a difference. Pen was great last night; with TL and Zito next two days don’t want to see them get overworked before Bax come in.
Nip…if you were up til end of game last night and were on here posting at 4:53 AM (and you are not with Edd or PIA)….I’d recommend more rest and recovery time…after whatever it is you do during the day.

And for all you youngsters at home who watched the final inning- that’s not the way to execute the sac bunt, but I hope you paid attention to the events in Boston. That was a fine lesson for you aspiring terrorists on how to bring a city to it’s knees with just few Walmart purchases with Mom’s card, a helpful media, and a couple of incompetent law enforcement agencies. Except for that meddlesome boat owner our inspiring duo might have had every city east of the Mississippi on lock down…
Seriously- this episode has to be a real time lesson on how not to handle future incidents. Some wackos are proposing that the lockdown was a dress rehearsal for when the Kenyan comes to take your guns or some such nonsense, but what it did accomplish was to show the havoc that even a couple of relatively unsophisticated newbies can wreak. Mass transit shut down, major sporting events cancelled, a shelter-in-place edict ? IMO this was insane overkill that mostly served as a template for how easy it really is to terrorize a major city with little or no “education”. Here’s what an Israeli miltary correspondent who was among those ordered to stay inside, had to say about the aftermath of terrorist attacks he had covered in Israel:
“people were out in the streets, filling up coffee shops right next to the one that had been bombed or standing at bus stops waiting for the next bus from the same line that had just exploded. This has always impressed me as a sign of true resilience, of a refusal to allow terrorism to change our way of life….
….there is symbolism when one of the US’s largest cities paralyzes itself in face of terrorism.
Is this the message the US wants to send around the world – That a single terrorist can disrupt so many lives and possibly more important – the American way of life?”

I agree with some of what you say. They closed down an entire city to find one stupid kid who had a gun and possibly a few home made explosives. Possibly. If a thief murders a convenience store clerk and carjacks a passerby to get away, do the cops close down the entire city to find the murderer? It looked like some kind of police state. And all the various agency heads come out of the woodwork in those news conferences to stand behind the one guy speaking that thanks them all for their work. Well, OK. Isn’t that what they are paid to do? And well paid, with huge pensions that are bankrupting our municipalities? They got the guy, with the help of the boat owner. I feel for the families of the one cop killed and one wounded. But, how about the families of the people killed/injured in the bombing? How 100 or more cops let the kid escape in the first place after they had a shootout with him is something that should be asked. There was less disruption in the Bay Area after the ’89 quake than searching for this one guy. A million people are supposed to stay inside? What if I want to leave my house. Am I subject to arrest? I say BS to how the whole thing was handled….

Interesting viewpoint, Michael.. but have to disagree. There was some luck in finding these guys… or instead of luck, maybe it was, for the first time in a really long time, everyone pulling together to do what they had to do. The people of Boston supported and complied with the lock down, and it seemed to me that the government and the people were actually in this thing together, and that’s how they caught the guys. I don’t know what “experts” are saying, but I seriously doubt many people in Boston would agree with your position. That city is tough, and they are united, and this thing ended a helluva lot better than it could have.

Did you read what the Jerusalem Post writer,Yaakov Katz, wrote?

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 20, 2013 at 9:35 am

I cited the article by Katz because too often what I posit is represented here as a roque opinion . It’s not just an “interesting viewpoint” from me, it’s a compelling one. I respect the differing viewpoint, but as Katz says in the full piece I linked to, even the timing of the lockdown was strange.

No, not yet, and as it’s 11:30pm here now, it’ll have to wait til morning. Well, considering that a major terrorism attack happened on Monday, and 4 days later, the perps are apprehended without another bomb attack, and considering Bostonians are joyfully back out on the streets after a very short “lock down”… they don’t seem so paralyzed to me. And I’ve talked with a bunch of ’em, I still have a lot of friends in Boston. It was tense, it was weird, but of course it was. Personally, I give Bostonians a lot of credit for not standing next to a bombed out coffee shop the very next day…. Anyway, sorry, I can’t continue this, I’m out, but we probably wouldn’t change our positions much anyway…

      Good win last night.

I’ll probably have a drone following me for the rest of my life, but I have to agree with Twin, albeit, I see your point as well Paul. My take is this – I feel we usurp or diminish our bill of rights by implementing the Patriot Act or other zealous laws. Core civil liberties and rights were taken away in the name of protecting us by passing the Patriot Act. Now, they don’t have to even pass laws – someone commits a crime (and yes, you can parse words and call it terrorism – whatever) and some yahoo declares “Marshall Law” and like lemmings we (Boston) all say this is a good thing. Sorry, I disagree. What’s next? People disappearing in the middle of the night because they were suspected of being traitorous to the State? Don’t laugh. It’s happened many, many times, e.g., Nazi Germany, China, Soviet Union, etc.

Personally, I haven’t agreed with much anything we have done since 9/11 occurred to combat terrorism, supposedly all in the name of protecting us.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 20, 2013 at 10:19 am

It’s come to that, has it? Drones take to the air seeking out Twinfan1 apologists 😉
Actuallly, Steve, take heart, many agree with “my” viewpoint:

Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, stopped short of directly criticizing the decision, but he lamented the development as a win of sorts for terrorists.

“When you have lives at stake, it’s up to law enforcement,” Ruppersberger said. “But it’s an accomplishment when someone shuts down an entire community and people can’t go outside and are told to stay away. We have to stand up as Americans to this. … We’ve got to continue to go to baseball games, continue to go to events. We can’t allow these people to shut us down.”

There a rah-rah element to the capture of a teen aged terrorist that’s understandable in a country that fortunately hasn’t had to endure what is common place in many parts of the world. Many are undoubtedly slapping their foreheads in amazement at the absurd and counterproductive (in the long term ) overkill of the shutdown.

Mark my words, this shit wont be funny when it’s routine. Here is how I see the future (which isn’t too far away):

Scenario – Suspected terrorist on loose in Sunnyvale, USA. Air sirens go off and all forms of communication, e.g., cell phones, landlines, PCs, televisions, radios, and outdoor speakers state the following, “Enemy of State, last seen in white Honda sedan, considered armed and dangerous, last seen on Central Expressway. 10 mile radius Marshal Law declared. Anyone found ouside their designated shelter in place, will be shot on site beginning at 1300 hours when this public service message officially is in effect. Thank you for your cooperation.”

Now we have morons like Lindsay Graham say this kid, a US citizen (naturalized last fall), accused of committing a crime on US soil, should be treated as an “enemy combatant” outside the US justice system. Essentially, he’s advocating throwing out the US constitutional protections of a US citizen on US soil, or as he says, “the homeland”. Sounds a lot like “der Vaterland”. Our forbears and our military fought for those constitutional rights for the last 230+ years, against George III, Hitler, against Tojo, and here is an American that wants to just take them away — our OWN senator, not a foreign power. Start doing that, and look around. We’re citizens, too. It’s crazy…

Was the lockdown overkill? Probably. We’re all undoubtedly learning on the fly how to deal with terrorism on the homefront, and perhaps a similar situation will be handled differently in the future. But, while many were inconvenienced between the time the murderer eluded the police and the time he was captured, no one else — not another young woman, not another college student, not another cop, and most certainly not another 8-year-old boy — was killed..

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on April 20, 2013 at 12:00 pm

I was never worrying about any inconvenience of the shut ins.. there was no lockdown while both suspects were on the loose from Monday until Friday. And the lockdown that did occur was while the remaining suspect was sitting in a backyard boat bleeding . The lockdown had zero to do with saving lives, all it did was show how easy it is to bring a major American city to it’s knees..
      IMO.

Well, first I want to thank BF?, for letting us voice our opinions on this event. What I didn’t like is that it paralyses everything not just Boston. My wife flew to SanDiego on Saturday. Her flight on Thursday, yes thursday was delayedre 3 hours. She was flying back to Sacramento!!!! WTF is that, I can understand flights going back east, but within CA. Sounded like they knew who was involved and where they were by that time!! Oh, and we all haven’t seen anything yet!! The hunt was nothing compared to what this trial is going to be like with the media!! Oh and don’t forget this guy has rights!! To the best defense this country can provide. This MF killed an 8 year old little boy!!, and others, and maimed hundreds. If he doesn’t get the death penalty there is something wrong with our justice system. Mike brings up an Isreal Writer, this guy would be tortured, yes tortured to find out why and if anyone else was involved if this had happened in Isreal. After the Olympic debacle Isreal does not fuck around with terrorist!! Alright I am done. A prayer for all the families that had someone killed or hurt by this senseless act.

Kevin, I share your animosity towards this person. I don’t care about his motivation, the act was heinous and he must be punished after a trial finds him guilty. But, he’s a US citizen. I assume you are, and I am. I don’t want my government taking away the constitutional rights of a US citizen on US soil because somebody–the President, the Attorney General, or Fox News, decides that they should. If that happens, we are heading for banana republic status, where if you or I disagree with somebody — the Constitution that protects us all is rendered a limp piece of parchment as it gets wet from the waterboarding applied to us…

      • Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin said, on April 20, 2013 at 2:52 pm

Totally agree, except what is America going to do with a home grown terrorist? When the bombings become more frequent like the middle east. My wife is from Vietnam, when we first got married she commented that sometimes there is too much freedom in America. There is a fine line on what the government should and should not control. Don’t get me wrong here Snark, I love America, but I think America needs to be more intolerant to terrorist acts. With America’s diverse cultures, the Constitution is now under constant attack from within it’s boarders.

For the time being, Timmy’s starts are the most, ah, intriguing games on the schedule. A truly solid 7 or 8 innings from him would provide some reassuring evidence that the pitching is not going to decline significantly this year. Which isn’t to say that I think a good start will be a sign that he’s on his way to becoming a top flight starter again. I suspect the team simply can’t afford a 5+ ERA from one of its starters this year again. He just needs to step it up a little.

I agree generally with the “big brother” statement. However, I am concerned about the last decade of infringement upon first and fourth amendment rights. People seemingly are more than willing to give up more and more of those freedoms in exchange for supposed large increases in security. It is a devil’s bargain, as I believe we have seen from this week’s events in Boston. Rights given away, and we are not so secure…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 20, 2013 at 3:43 pm

There’s a SCOTUS case from 2010 that allows a suspect to be questioned without Miranda for a short period of time if public safety is in danger to gain information about how to secure the danger. Tell me where all the bombs are and when they are timed to go off, etc. The exception only holds so long as the danger exists, and any self incriminating statements said during the time are banned from use as future evidence against the suspect. In this case, the public safety emergency seems to be going on a little long, if you know what I mean…

I just learned that Mrs. Mays was just 74, and had been suffering from Alzheimers for 16 years. That is so young to have that start, and so long to have to deal with it, for all concerned. Having experienced a mother with increasing dementia over the last 7-8 or so years of her life, I sympathize absolutely and totally with Willie. I understand well, I think, something of what he went through, only he stood strong through it for an even longer, longer time, and for his spouse. I’ve said some things about Willie that others have said as well, he could be difficult at times. For 16 years that most surely must have been increasingly hard to deal with; so I can imagine that would cause someone to be a bit difficult at times when outside the home. Marshall, or for that matter R.B. Ginsburg, etc.) to succeed today. Boies is excellent at what he does, but he’s not close. Every Warren Court advance has eroded in the decades since. On the other hand, the surge of civil rights and affirmative action that we did get made a huge difference. The reactionaries gathered force to make sure it didn’t go too far. Still, maybe we’ll get lucky and Obama will have more than one or two SCt justices to replace.

Hi, Flappers. The things one learns. My brother works across the street from the JFK Library in Boston and his daughter dates a kid from nearby Watertown. I also discovered that the gal I met at the trophy thing at Finnerty’s had a friend finish the Boston Marathon 7 mins before the bombing and a cousin who worked at a restaurant 3o ft from the bombing. Hey, I saw “42” today. I liked it a lot. I especially liked the following; the talented young man who plays Jackie Robinson combines acting with athleticism; Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey; the photography — sometimes gorgeous as a still life; the depictions of old ballparks, including the Polo Grounds; the depiction of baseball itself, which is often weak or erroneous. And of course, the real-life story. (Former giants Leo Durocher and Eddie Stanky are instrumental.) If there is any weakness it is in the narrative arc and pace. One of the most touching things was Rickey relating to Jackie how a white kid was making believe he was Jackie. That moved me. That’s what willie Mays meant / did to me and for me.

Regarding some of the discussion above, I recall one of the most telling things I read after 9/11. It was by Pete Hamill. (“A Drinking Life” by him is superb.) A woman I worked with (since deceased too young) passed it on to me. The short piece by Hamill was in Cigar Aficionado magazine, of all things. A few years earlier I had met the fine journalist Pete Hamill, with my ballet-dancer daughter, at the famed Elaine’s restaurant on the Upper East Side of Manhattan (she wanted to go there for her birthday; she would move to NY’s Lincoln Center, at 15 years old, a week before the attacks). The article was brief and related how Hamill and his wife went to their villa in Mexico shortly after the 9/11 tragedy. I can’t convey this properly, but the point was something like this: Hamill found that the local Mexican villagers were surprisingly undramatic about the attack. He had a conversation with people there. The gist of it was something like this: You Americans are a young country. We have been around a long time. We understand there is a lot of suffering in the world, a lot of pain and tragedy. We are not surprised by it. I am not properly conveying the line of thought or its power, but it obviously left an impression on me. I also recall the Buddhist roshi who visited my Episcopal church at this post-9/11 time, saying: “We are made low. We have been brought low. This gives us the opportunity to understand the sufferings of others with more compassion and understanding.”

    Go, Giants!

    To the game.

Does any one know of a pirate feed for this game?

Dodgers lose again. Has the clock started on 2-Trips yet? Who would they replace him with? If they wanted to go “big splash,” who is there? Lasorda, in a stunning comeback, trying to do a Davey Johnson?

Of the news networks this week, CNN was especially awful. The manic insane quest to be first with “exclusives” sent them completely over the edge of a cliff. Who can listen to John King now saying “My sources tell me…..” without laughing?

Yeah I thought NBC did a pretty good job. How fucked up is that?

Pawlie, not sure about the pirate feeds this year, sorry man.

We typically watch ABC (why, I can’t say; probably because wife and daughter watch GMA; even they agree Diane Sawyer is just too much), but we switched to NBC when we learned from Twitter that NBC was scooping ABC bad.

    • PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on April 20, 2013 at 6:46 pm

Twitter last night had some funny shit skewering CNN and Fox (which apparently had an erroneous Zooey Duschanel caption under the suspect) and the NY Post (which said in a headline that 12 had died). I can’t recall it exactly, but stuff like: “John King of CNN is reporting it is a dark-skinned boat.” Or “This just in. Wolf Blitzer with a correction. It’s not a boat but a schooner.” Etc.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on April 20, 2013 at 7:01 pm

According to a report today, they were putting handcuffs on the older brother when the younger brother came at them all in the SUV. He may have been trying to save his brother in the process. The cops jumped out of the way, and the SUV ran over the older brother.

Mets hit 4 HRs at home last night for the first time in 11 yrs. and won. Today they give 4 to the Nats and lose. I’m sure their hitters feel better, but so do those coming in too.

Romo on pace for 81 appearances, about 78 innings. That’s 12 more games and 16 more innings than 2010, his busiest year. Without arm or knee trouble, he nails 40 or more saves easily.

Snark got his wish and can die in peace:
” I’d like to see Lincecum get in a good, solid 6 innings without walking half the world and a blow up inning. I’d settle for 6 innings and . . . ”
I got my wish: Posey catching Timmeh!
We ALL got our wish – nice win!

When you see someone as strong as panda muxcle a 95mph pitch into right, no where near a splash hit, you are reminded just how great Barry Bonds was.

ROMO – leading the nation in saves.

BOZO – email me about feeding pawlie 🙂

    Second. the boston stuff:

With the London Marathon going off a week after Boston, the night of the bombings (Monday morning here) the security chief was on the hot seat: would it be run, would the bombers be here, what extra security, etc. And he said:
“I have lived with terrorism my entire life (IRA especially) and we are always on alert for these kinds of events. The marathon will be run and we already have the best security policies in place.”

The race is currently (21/Apr/2013 11:00 BST) one hour old with spectators packing the venue and it is a beautiful spring day.
