Before the Pitch Count Was Born There Was This Game…..
Today is the 50 year anniversary of the 16 inning pitching duel of Marichal/Spahn. Chris Jaffe of The Hardball Times wrote an article remembering it. Jaffe sends me links to articles he thinks Giants fans will enjoy and I forward them if I think they’re something you guys will like. His website is awesome, you should bookmark it. Here’s the link:

It’s threads like this one that really deserve the personal attention of Mr. DJ Loo……
Here’s the box score. Sorry it’s so big, I couldn’t figure out how to snip it in one piece from baseball reference
I couldn’t find the pitch counts but Marty Lurie said on his Sunday morning show that Sphan threw 226 pitches, Marichal 254– I might be off a few pitches, that’s just what I recall him saying.
Lurie was positively gushing about this game on Sunday. I’m not certain of this because I was only listening in and out, but I THOUGHT I heard him say that Mays recently told him that before the bottom of the 16th started, Marichal said something to Mays (half joking) about hurrying up and ending it. And Mays told him he would take care of it. Something like that. Correct my recollection if any of you heard the Marty Lurie Show on Sunday.
Of course, Mays hit a bomb to end it 1-0 in the bottom of the 16th. And if anyone ever asks you who was the only player in major league baseball to homer in every inning 1 through 16, now you know the answer to the question……….

“We get no hit, we suck”…
Fister settled down, had a decent enough game for a guy who gave up 5 hits and 4 earned in the 1st. Timmy had 8K’s, Fist 4. But if I’m just grading the decision of who to start, I think I went the right way. The pitcher I left on the bench got no hit, lol.
Whatever, both of them are at the back of my rotation…….
And when Kershaw finishes off the Rockies, the Giants will be all alone in last place.
Well, honestly, that’s where they belong right now. Hopefully they won’t stay there too long.
Who’s ready for sell mode? You know, acquire some prospects, tank some games, move up the draft board?
Won’t happen. Worst case, they won’t buy.IMO.
after this? No way. Look, we don’t actually have any players that other teams are cocked and ready to start bidding for. Timmy? Zito? Blanco? Sandoval? Maybe Pence. But come on, this is a team that needs a piece or two. They don’t have too many affordable pieces that other teams would be clamoring for…….
They showed the play, and while it ain;t perfectly clear, it looks like Bailey woulda beat Posey to the bag with a good throw.
I’m not spending a single second worrying about that *hit*. It was just a little fister off the bat (as I recall, I haven’t seen a replay). Bailey beat Posey with that pitch, and regardless of Bailey’s slow reaction off the mound there aren’t too many infield jam shots that Posey is gonna beat out unless Prince Fielder *bowling pins* the entire infield……..
Blanco’s stupid baserunning mistake was the important part of that play.
Bruce should throw out the curfew tonight, let the boys go out and get shit-faced if that’s what some of them want to do. And Cincy surely has some back-street Asian massage parlors to ease their pain. And, sleep in tomorrow, and skip batting practice. But come game time, they’d better start having some fire in their eyes….
Hitting those massage parlors, they’ll have fire somewhere else as well.
I generally dislike the youtube posts here because they take up too much room on the page but some of them are worth it. Chuck, based off the starting point I’m currently looking at for this vid I’m gonna just guess that there is 2:28 of my immediate future better spent elsewhere. But I’m totally happy to be wrong if an actual review comes in.
Not a Frank Zappa fan? Guess you had to be there.
It’s the only city where you want a 3-way you get frigging chili…
And the bottom of the 7th is finally over at Citi Field: 7 runs for the Mets as Corbin appears headed to his 1st loss.
Casilla went the first 2 innings for San Jose tonight, 1 hit 0 BB 0 K 0 runs.
“‘The Rangers, Dodgers and Rockies ‘are in heavy pursuit’ of Nolasco, two executives tell ESPN’s Jayson Stark'”
This is getting nutso- it’s RICKY NOLASCO. You sort of amble along for Ricky. Maybe you break into a gentle trot.
He’s having a very good year. And at this time of year, these type of pitchers cost a lot. Norris will cost the same if not more. If you were GM you’d never pull off a deal because you want to give up nothing
Norris is better than Ricky and is not a free agent after this year, and has a very favorable contract situation and I’d give up more. Certainly not our two top prospects PLUS, however.
Let the others beat off to Nolasco. This game and roadie has to tell Sabean one thing. Do NOTHING right now. He has to figure out if this team has any hope of staying in the race, or is cratering and is unworthy of giving up prospects for a player or players that will make little difference…
Well, they have to see what they got once they get Casilla, Gaudin, and Vogie back. Vogie may go right back to stinktown, but they owe themselves that much. Everyone else sucks as well, and I’ve never seen a collective division go this bad ever. Didn’t StL win their division recently at 82-80 a few years ago?
the pitching is fine, it’s settled down and heading to a something we thought it would be. Our hitters have been headed towards this for a while, as I’ve said many times. No Pagan, fucked up fingers for Scoots and Crawford, Sandoval hurt and then coming back and us wishing he was still on the DL….It’s not a LU built for the long haul. Maybe for a quick motorboat.Built for speed. But that’s it…….
We need 2 more hitters–same shit Sabes pulled off last year with Pence and Scoots. Do that again, we’ll probably be fine.
Well, yeah. Nolasco isn’t gonna happen. I could see them getting Francouer or Rios. Woo hoo.
San Diego won the West in 2005 at 82-80 while being outscored by 40 runs. St. Louis won the Central in 2006 w/ 83 wins.
Stat of the night. In Timmy’s last 9 starts, he’s gotten a grand total of 9 runs in support.
So, my 5:49 post was actually underestimating the depth of the no run support for Tim. That stat is just bizarre and atrocious…
We are not even at the break, and only 3 games out? Yes we are bad right now, but its not like any of the other teams are worth much.
Just look at it this way. At the half way point we are a half game behind the Dodgers. Exactly where we thought we would be, or at least might be at this point when the season started. Our pitching finally coming around. Don’t jump ship yet
Getting no hit is bad. But getting trolled by A’s ownership is even worse. See the commenter ‘passcode’ on Hank’s post game article. Click on his profile and click on his facebook link, then Google his name.
It’ll blow your minds.
Time to call out Mr. S? That’s pretty unreal. I passed on your info to Schulman, see if he does anything. Amusing, to say the least…
It’s been happening a lot lately. When he posts, all of a sudden a lot of new accounts appear (obvious A’s trolls) and then they all go away. I’ve matched his facebook page with things he’s said to the media, and it all checks out. If I was a multi millionaire, I’d be on a Lanai in Maui not giving a shit!
which article? and where do you find the “passcode”?
Passcode is the guy’s handle. Click on it, and click the facebook link from that.
