But This One Goes to 11….
The same way I only count 2 Giants World Series wins instead of 7, I’m only going to count 11 no hitters against us instead of 16. Here’s a list of all 11 in the San Francisco Era:
2013 Homer Bailey 3-0
2003 Kevin Millwood 1-0
1997 Kevin Brown 9-0
1992 Kevin Gross 2-0
1990 Terry Mulholland 6-0
1986 Mike Scott 2-0
1981 Charlie Lau 4-0
1980 Jerry Reuss 8-0 (the Lau/Reuss no hitters were also back to back in all of major league baseball)
1968 Ray Washburn 2-0
1963 Sandy Kofax 8-0
1961 Warren Spahn 1-0
Not too many patterns to see here other than getting no hit 3 straight times by guys named “Kevin”. Oh, and curiously we seem to get shut out each time 🙂 🙂 🙂 ….
Be honest, how many of you, at some point in this game, started rooting for the no hitter? Come on, how many have you seen one from start to finish? Any no hitter is historic. I’ll admit that starting the 9th inning I wanted to see it. I’m not saying I was rooting for it, but I was excited to see it happen.
Where’s Willie D?
not basking, that’s for sure. Yes, the division is so bad right now, with Giants D Bax (losers of 5 in a row) and Pads all having lost last 8 of 10. But, all that has done is open the door for LA, which has won 9 of last 10 and gotten right back into it.
Kemp is back, Hanley has raked since he returned and the kid is still hot. Fife has pitched well, Jansen is in as closer. Instead of burying them the suckitude of all teams in front of them has given them life and now they are fired up and confident. Soon they get Crawford back and either he or Ethier probably are dealt elsewhere. guys like punto and hairston jr. are good role players/back ups.
Maybe dealing for a guy like Marmol will be a move that backfires and undoes them.
The release Marmol less than 24 hours after acquiring him (all they really wanted was the international bonus slot that came with the trade). Fuck the Bums.
The humiliation is approaching epic proportions, not only do we get no hit by some guy named Homer (sheesh, the only thing worse would be some guy named Gomer), but we are in last place. Fortunately, I will take the long view and optimism of SportsDude, who emphasized that we are only a few games out of first.
In other sports news, Flav is doing an excellent job temporarily managing my Flap team while I am away in Canada. Last night, my team moved into 4th place, one spot ahead of his team. Hilarious. Who knows? I may be in 1st place by the time I get back to Denver. 😉
New post on my blog . . .
Well, yesterday I said I “just” wanted to see some clean baseball, a little offense, and a good outing by Tim.
Again, the Giants cannot fire on all cylinders.
Clean baseball? Nope. Tim with the throwing error on the bunt, and then Blanco’s baserunning gaff. WTF…did these guys forget the fundamentals of the game???
A little offense? Another BIG no. Shit, one Blanco walk away from having Bailey deal a perfecto. And on Monday only two hits and one of those was Kickham’s double.
When you look at Tim’s body of work over the past couple of years, he did decent enough. 6 H, 3 ER. He did make the mistake Phillips for the two-run dinger, but with 8 Ks…not a bad outing. Certainly good enough for his team to win if they would generate a little offense.
I am frustrated as hell. This is one of the longest most miserable slumps I can recall in a while. The bats need to wake the hell up. And the part that gets me more than anything else is the errors (throwing, base running, not covering bases, etc.). Hell, one of the prominent traits of this team over the past couple of years has been their propensity to play sound fundamental ball.
I still think they can turn this around (yesterday was the first game past the season mid-point).
Looking forward to this road trip being over. I am meeting my daughter and her boyfriend at Sunday’s game. Time for a little paybacks to the Bums in Blue.
Zito has been abysmal on the road, but they need him to play stopper today.
Saudade.
Sehnsucht.
Schaden.
“Where is the team I had on 28 October, 2012?” he mourns. “A long way from home,” comes an answer
Alles is nicht verloren…
I concur, even STILL with the massive amounts of SUCKtitude….
Hmmm…if the Giants are not at rock bottom right now…they are pretty fucking close.
It might be time for Anna and the girls to come back and help slap the Giants out of their collective funk…
Chi, I responded to you on my blog. Take care friend – off to Glacier National Park.
Blade, are going to wear one of those bear-scaring bells on the hiking trail? Seriously, enjoy Glacier. Absolutely beautiful place.
HAHAHA. Yeah, you are actually spot on xoot – there are plenty of bears in that park (same deal in Banf and that area). Ironically, we have nothing except our legs, which as you know – wont help. 🙂
My last trip to Canada and the western States via RV, my girlfriend and I had slingshots and bear retardant spray and I doubt that would have been much help, except pissed off the bears.
I have never been to Glacier, but have heard it is beautiful. Make it an awesome day and will look forward to more tales and pictures. And remember “Watch out where the huskeys go…don’t you eat that yellow snow.”
In a 3-0 game, I was rooting for more than one hit, but it had to start with one. Hell, I was hoping that the Giants would walk the 8 spot hitter in the top of the 9th just to make Homer spend some energy batting. I didn’t think his FB was unhittable, and I really wanted to see the Giants show some life. So the no hitter impressed me less than it pissed me off.
I meant, of course, in the bottom of the 8th. I’m still pissed off, I guess.
Well, we been here before. 🙂 In 2010, 2011, 2012, Sabes had to make some deals. In ’10, Ross and some others came through, in ’11 Beltran wasn’t a hero, in ’12 Scutaro stole the show. What will happen in ’13?
In 2010, the Giants gave up one-hit to the Padres, and lost 1-0. That was pretty darned frustrating to watch.
Yeah, since this whole spin into oblivion started (what, mid-June) I have kept repeating the same thing. And I still stick with that. It is early (79 games left). It is before the trade deadline, so there is a chance that Sabes works his magic, again. Guys will hopefully get healthy (Casilla, Vogey, etc.). And for a team that was near the top of the NL in hitting for most of the season, I just don’t see how the hitting woes can continue much longer.
The real head-scratcher for me is just the inability to play fundamental sound baseball. Way too many errors.
Oblivion started earlier, Chi. They have the worst team record in MLB for the past 45 games…
Yeah, mid-May is more like it. But still 79 to play. No one has won shit, yet.
At no point did I root for or hope to see a no-hitter yesterday. Perhaps in a 9-0 game I would have, but last night we were in the game. In the 9th I was still hoping we’d rally and win…
I’ve seen or listened to many no-hitters, including several of those against us. Tha Haddix game, which I heard on the radio, rates as the most memorable. Dirrrrrrty’s was dramatic with the father-son angle and the fact that it came when his future was in doubt. Cain’s because of the perfecto and The Catch. I remember Mulholland’s mostly because it’s the only one against us where I did root for it by the last couple innings. Terry was always a favorite of mine.
I’ve been to two of those no-hiiters: Mulholland in ’90 and Millwood in ’03, both at the Vet. It’s a strange experience seeing your team get no-hit in person. While it’s great to see a little bit of history, it’s not a lot of fun watching the Giants pull the ultimate in offensive impotence. The Mulholland one wasn’t too hard to take since it was 6-0. Gary Carter lined out to Charlie Hayes at third for the final out, a ball that was hit harder than anything off the Giants’ bats yesterday. The Millwood one, though, was frustrating. Ledee hit a first-inning homer for the only run and later made a no-hitter-saving catch. Durham walked in the first inning but got caught stealing on a very questionable call, otherwise the Giants might’ve scored without a hit. The big moment came in the 7th, when whoever Philly’s manager was let Millwood pitch to Bonds. Millwood struck him out, and you knew then he was gonna finish it.
BTW, Marmol was DFAed by the Bums. It seems that, according to Peter Gammons, “that the Dodgers were only interested in the international bonus slot they acquired in the deal, not in retaining Marmol as a member of their bullpen.”
Dang, I thought the ex-Cub curse would f them up.
And uh, Nip…those 4 AM post are scary. Getting proper rest is important, at any age. I work out a few times during the week, but I’m big on * recovery time*.
Saw the Perry no-no with my dad, the only time he and I went to the Stick together. I remember being pretty bummed Mays wasn’t in the lineup. But few fans on a cold night in Sept with the Giants 12 games out, so we were able to sit right behind the G’s dugout and see Gibson in his prime and a little history.
Must have been a Fri night because I remember the next day lying around the house with the radio on as Washburn returned the favor.
On Nolasco. Ricky is having a decent year, not a good one. You don’t give up much for a 30 YO journeyman rental. I think some folks might be unduly influenced by what he’s done against us. If the Bums or any other West team gets him early, they’re doing us a favor, we’ll know which of the better available pitchers to go after. I like Ricky fine, he’s a decent 3/4, as long as that’s what we pay for- a decent 3 or 4 rental, go for it.
Norris is better than Ricky, marginally, and is not a free agent after this year, and has a very favorable contract situation- and I’d give up more. Certainly not our two top prospects PLUS, however.
Stat of the morning?
Road record this season of the Giants in road starts for Tim, Zito and Kickham? 1 – 14.
I’d say it doesn’t look promising for tonight…
The good news? A Zitter start has never made sense, good or bad.
Whether it’s Ricky or Bud or going with Gaudin or possibly Surkamp- we’re talking about another 6 inning pitcher. So we need to make it a 6 inning game. Despite all the hysteria now, the team will hit well enough. Plug Casilla into that 7th inning role he had in 2010 and 2011, go get a shutdown set up guy like Crain and we can be fine with the Nolascos of the world. Jesse is also a rental and he’ll be expensive as rental relievers go, but not blue chip level. And he’d be a difference maker- he’d make a Nolasco or Norris deal a better deal.
Never saw a no-hitter live, and I certainly wasn’t rooting to see one last night. A walk and a homer and we’re right back in it at any point. Crazy to see all those fastballs though.
Closest I came to a no-no was seeing Garrelts throw a one-hitter VS The Pads? also SAW Schmidt’s 15 k game vs Pitts (I think). A memory is a terrible thing to lose.
Viewing that vid from yesterday on Buster’s bomb of Latos reminds me of why playoff ball is so good, at least one reason, anyway. The early fall sunlight of an afternoon game in a first playoff series, and even a second series, just gives the game’s appearance a special, filtered look. That softer, lower-angled light tells you that this is the real deal, this game means something. It’s not some just-another-game in mid-July with the Reds…
Saw your post on my blog, Chico. Glad to hear from you, I was concerned when it had been so long.
Am I the only one that gets the ‘Spinal Tap’ reference?
Anyhow, Chico, if you are out there, can you ping JDR? I can’t seem to post on his site any more.
Unreal that an A’s owner is blogging shit about the Giants.
Can one of you explain this A’s owner blogging thing? I didn’t understand Chico’s direction on the last thread
sfgate commenter called “passcode” fired off some trollish stuff on the splash, reveling in the Giants misery. If you go to his sfgate profile page, there’s a facebook link to the facebook page of a well-known east bay lawyer who made a fortune in the 80s in class-action civil rights (employment, mainly) cases. The guy who appears to be “passcode” then used a chunk of his fortune to purchase a minority share of the A’s. (By contrast, I believe the other primary partner in the civil rights law firm used his money to set up The Impact Fund, to continue the work.)
Maybe that’s confusing, too. trollish sfgate commenter “passcode” apparently = rich guy, who owns small share of the A’s. Possible proof = facebook link on “passcode’s” sfgate profile page. There.
I see, thanks. So if I see passcode post something I’ll try it out
That’s strange. I’ll let him know dude.
Although it may’ve been shabby of me, I was rooting to break up the no-hitter by any means: thrown bat, slap hit, bunt, anything. Maybe if HOMER, a stooopid name for a pitcher, didn’t pitch a no-hitter last Sept. I’d feel otherwise. He seems like a decent enough guy. Fuckhimandhisteam.
I sure hope the game is not on TV on the East Coast. Two games in a row on TV, via ESPN and MLB, seemed to throw a hex on us.
A stats person like Twin might be able to shed light on this, I cannot ever remember the Giants playing so poorly, or at least losing so many games, and YET having such little consequence in the standings. Gawd, we could be 9 out, and aren’t.
I can’t find his posts, but he was posting as Passcode. If you clicked on his name, a FB link was included in his profile. Click on that and you get his name. He may have been banned recently.
What are everybody’s eatin’ plans for the 4th? Ribs are mandatory here. “Cold Slaw” as Gramma Scott called it, a pot of pintos, lemon meringue pie…
Not sure. Been invited by Hart Seely to his DeRuyter Lake cottage. Sounds like good fun, good food, good baseball talk, and an excellent local band, Los Blancos. I’ll get to meet his life-long friend Alfonso, featured in “The JuJu Rules.” The trash talk has already started. Hart claims your season is over if you’ve been no-hit. Au contraire, mes amis.
As my friend Demp28 pointed out, last time the Giants were no-hit was 2003. They went on to win the division that year. Now what was this noise about your season being done if you get no hit? Tell them to put that in their pipe and smoke it. 😉
I’m doing grilled sausages kraut red potatoes salad baked beans BBQ corn and apple pie. And some good dark ale.
BBQ at my folks place. My mom’s birthday is on the 5th, so it’s tradition to do it on the 4th.. Fireworks are legal where I live, so we’ll light some off. On the 4th, the city where I live is called ‘Baghdad on the coast’
True we could be 9 out but I’m not comfortable blowing a 7 game lead over the Bums.
Oh, I’m not comfortable. On the ledge. Eyeing the gas pipe. I really don’t even want to look at scores today. But of course I will, like a train-wreck voyeur.
Gametime Forecast: 77°F • Drizzle • 46%PoP
1. Gregor Blanco (L) CF
2. Tony Abreu (S) 2B
3. Buster Posey (R) C
4. Hunter Pence (R) RF
5. Pablo Sandoval (S) 3B
6. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
7. Andres Torres (S) LF
8. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
9. Barry Zito (L) P
Head scratcher…Why not have Torres lead off against the lefty?
Leaves 4 lefties at the bottom you idiot
Crawford was asked how the Giants get out of this. “Get hits” was his terse, brilliant reply. If the Giants are stingy with hits, they might as well be stingy with words. Bochy: “We’ve talked. We’ve met. That’s done.” Has kind of a “veni, vidi, vici” ring to it, doesn’t it?
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?!
Time for Bochy’s Thugs to start taking names and kicking asses.
Sorry for the delay, been busy.. here’s his profile http://www.sfgate.com/profile/?User=passcode&plckUserId=passcode
He has a facebook link on his profile – click on that and then Google his name. He’s part of the Wolff ownership group.
Crain on the 15 day DL. Texas gives Manny Ramirez another shot.
Jesse Crain’s shoulder sprain blow up Twins trade.
Teams will have the red- flag alert up…
Jesse is a White Sox but that blows up that trade, too. Fien from the Twinkies might be the better value anyway.
I knew that Twin, l meant you on that trade, guess I should of clarified that better.
Don’t the need another Chris/ Matt Dominguez contrversory.
🙂
Better the shoulder blows up before we got him…
Thanks, Chico. You da man!
Damm never thought I would have to wager on who would get the next Giant hit.
Guess I’ll go with Scoots since Anna is not available.
.
He’s sitting tonight.
Maybe he meant tomorrow 😉
Ha…..has a team ever been no no’d back to back?
Pretty cool: http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/uptown/hey-willie-mays-streets-honoring-uptown-article-1.1388503
That story seems a bit off. One street is near Willie’s “childhood home”? He grew up in Alabama. They must mean his NYC home while he played there…
Shocker: we’ve picked up Beltre.
A rh vet best with pop is needed
or “bat”
OK, Beltre was a crummy joke. They signed Kevin Beltre, a kid SS from the the DR.
Jesus…I can’t believe the Giants have some interest in”Fat Fuck” Joba Chamberlain.
I’m sure Panda could show him all the late- night eating establishments in the City though.
Kat, they said they were NOT interested in Joba. As Henry tweeted “With due respect to my friend GK3 at the NY Post, #sfgiants scout Elder was in Minn last night to see Twins bullpen, not Joba.”
Twin, Bleacher Report says they are interested, and are scouting him as well.
Well, Henry says no. I’ll hope that Henry is right. Bleacher Report has some pretty funky “reporters”.
Don’t forget, the Giants only got 2 hits the day before the no no off Arroyo. What’s the O/U on hits tonight against Cingrani? Looks like Abreu got us going a little.
Scutaro again out with “back tightness”.
He’s had this now off/on for several months. What’s the deal? You don’t have back problems just “because”.
Tightness or spasms are due to something structural that’s amiss. A disk, vertebrae, something. What are we going to find out later that the Giants are hiding about this?…
either that or they were treating it as vertigo of low thyroid or something else fucked up by a medical team that has not been known for their keen, cutting edge treatment of injuries.
Will Zits get out of the first inning tonight without a struggle and giving up a run or two? I’ll say no, and hope he proves me wrong…
And the shitty fucked up beat goes on ….
Maybe it’s time to do as they should have done to start the season- split Pence and Panda with Belt. It’s a move that makes sense whether we’re hitting or not.
Andres looks to have the contact lens problem worked out. 😉
Twin, that would be thinking outside of Bochy’s box probably.
Do any of you know if Torres has any kids?
I think he has a son, born last year. His wife is “Soannie”..
Thanks. Seems like he’d be really into family and being a dad
If I’m Zito I would just show bunt every single pitch. Pull it back and slap it ever once or twice an at bat. He’d be a tough at bat to deal with. And it wouldn’t take anything out of his normal swing which is completely designed for contact and nothing more
Zito looks like he’s wringing out his ball sack on the mound. He’s not locating his CB for shit, is it possible he just can’t get a grip?
Sandoval is just late on everything.
Batting Averages and RBI last two weeks:
Posey .295 6
Belt .259 3
Scooter .167 2
Crawford .091 0
Sandoval .107 0
Torres .265 3
Pence .209 4
Blanco .213 1
Just got to Tahoe to escape the heat, and we got t-storms and rain. Weird.
Still… Jealous
And panda needs to sit if he’s gonna swing at shit 2′ high and a foot wide.
I’ve been taking care of maintenance shit at the house all afternoon and I’ve only seen about an inning and a half of this game and the sounds off on the tv. But every pitch I see Zito throw looks misplaced or bad. How have the reds only scored 1 run in this game?
That’s how, wierdness and at ’em balls. Maybe we’re going to win this.
Bochy said he would sit Panda if Arias was healthy.
I just started watching, and I’ve….
What the fuck?
That was hilariously rad and fantastically humorous
That’s awesome. The guy who never plays breaks the streak if limpness. He’s hit decently with minimal chances
FUCKIN TONY AWARD!!!
CALLED IT AT THE BAR!!!
SMOKED THAT HR!!!
Want to pay proper homage to Macdog’s 9:22am. Great memory, great snapshot. Not watching the game in progress. I don’t think it is on here for free, which is a good omen.
Moooojares!
Yeah like Chuck I’m heading out of town to Reno, but not until Friday.Seeing the fireworks show and BBQ ribs &chicken.
Going up and gambling, playing some golf, and getting drunk till Wed.
Hope you all enjoy the 4th!!!!!
Good luck and have fun. I’ll be *you* in a couple of weeks doing the same thing in Reno
Koooooootosa!
OK few too many voovrays.
For no reason whatsoever, if you asked me which no hitter vs the Giants that I remember most in my lifetime, it would be Mike Scott’s. Not sure why….
Strange.
Now, let’s get some fucking runs. Said in my best Harry Carey accent.
Might be over stating things but that felt like a huge turning point in this season. Had the feel of game 5.
Or.maybe Im inwbreibted.
I will admit that I thought they were nuts to pitch to Bruce..
Wow, How about that Bull Pen!!!
Striking out the 3-5 guys with 1st& 3rd no outs!!!
Bravo, great work by Boch mixing and matching!!
BF, the Mike Scott no-hitter was very memorable, for a lot of bad reasons. It clinched the division for the Astros, I think; and it came on the heels of Roger Craig accusing Scott that season of doctoring the ball. The Giants were a contender again that season after down seasons. It was bitter losing the division to the Astros that season, and on a Mike Scott no-hitter of all things.
The Astros, of course, went on to have a very competitive playoff series against the Mets, but the Mets were a team of destiny that season.
I remember a fall haze of sun drenching Scott after the final out was recorded. Late afternoon. Haven’t looked up the box score yet…..
Puig ran into a wall again tonight, but seems to be OK. I’m not sure he can keep getting away with that, though.
Apparently he scored from second on a groundout, somehow. Haven’t seen it yet. I’m definitely not throwing away my overall suspicion of PEDs use across the league when I see that guy…
Hey Pablo, it’s a start. C’mon Belt over the bleeping wall man.
What the F was that by Panda? Unfrigginbelievable. Just sit Panda for a few days, put Arias in there. What’s next — swinging at a pitch ROLLING up to the plate? That was so friggin stupid an AB, he should score now…
Brad Stevens, 36 year old coach at Butler, signs as Celtics new coach. That’s out from left field — wow…
That may have been the single worst swing I’ve ever witnessed.
Now that was a helluva play by Pablo. He swings at strike 3 that bounces between his legs and hits him, thus caroming well away from the catcher, and then says within the runner’s box so that he’s safe when the catcher’s throw hits his fat ass. Amazing.
sorry: stays within the runner’s box
Could be AB of the year if he scores, maybe even if he doesn’t…
man did I mess up that relative clause. Pawlie, try to see past the bad grammar to understand what both James and I were trying to describe.
damn. past MY bad grammar. I’m too distracted for this game-time posting stuff tonight.
Not a problem; at least it wasn’t “James and me.” How’s this for grammar? Fuckme, Giants.
Whatever happened to the ethyl chloride bottle? The stuff trainers used to spray on guys when they got hit by pitches to “freeze” away the pain? I don’t see that used anymore, at least on the field…
Well, there were a lot of things like that in those days. Remember that mercurochrome orange stuff? It turns out that mercury isn’t ideal medicine.
They used all the ethyl chloride on our bats.
They should use it on Panda’s arms so he can’t swing at neck high shit, or bouncing pitches…
Well, leaving the bags full is about what you’d expect in this slide. I was thinking about a squeeze there, but stopped myself, Bochy would never do that…
They were loaded with two out, weren’t they?
Yep, I’m willing to try anything at this point to get a run. It would have been a huge surprise, a decent bunt to third would have gotten it done, Arias gets a hit, he’s got speed…
Just following dots online but it looks as if the Reds’ pitchers are begging us to score. BEGGING us to do it without a hit. What a very strange half-inning. The Cialis Syndrome. #impotence
The Reds were walking guys and hitting guys to load the bases, and Arias swings at a 1-0 pitch that was borderline high and flies out. The expression on Bochy’s face said it all.
Boch must be chewing snakes, as my father used to say.
That’s “aggresive” hitting zumiee, Bochy likes that, dontcha know?…
In a 6+ week dive like this, often a team will fire somebody. Practically, might make no difference, but somebody gets fired to shake up the team. I nominate Joe Lefebvre, assistant batting coach or ass kisser, he’s been back now for a year or two after being fired before at some point. Sabes’ long-time buddy. Hell, fire him, and Sabes probably puts him back on payroll next week somewhere with a cubicle in the front office and at the same salary, but at least somebody got fired for this atrociousness…
Um, no. I would not recommend the Egyptian Army Strategy.
To cushion the blow just in case, I doomerishly expect a loss. But most tellingly it sounds as if we have overall played a decent game. That’s important. I would hate to see these guys quit on themselves in any fashion. Of course, Bruce won’t abide that. (Abreu turning out to be a bright spot. Is he related to 57-year-old Bobby Abreu?)
Is this mic on? I said, THEY USED ALL THE ETHYL CHLORIDE ON OUR BATS. I’ll be here Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Tip the waitress.
🙂
