The Great Escape
I’ve decided that as a New York/San Francisco Giants fan my primary duty — and pleasure — is to bask in the Golden Gate glow of the Giants as 2012 World Series Champions. That’s all. There are — I don’t know — 90-plus days left of basking guaranteed. I hereby resolve to enjoy those days. My charge, my self-imposed mandate, is to treasure each of those days as reigning champions, to act like “Roman kings,” as Bob Dylan puts it.
Teams rarely repeat, in any sport, especially baseball. My job now is to enjoy the ride and not worry about anything else. Not wins, not losses, not injuries, not trades, not other teams, not good weather or storms.
Yup. A grand escape. I don’t want so-called reality to rob me of this delicious, daily pleasure.
That’s my strategy. What’s yours?
Really, Snarkk? Shit that happened 3 seasons ago is coming back to haunt them? Bullshit. They suck now because they suck now. Not because they pitched pressure games 3 years ago. What about the hitting?
Read what I said, Chuck. I’m not saying anything about the hitting. Cain, Lincecum look like they’re pitching on fumes on a regular basis. I think the pressurized pitching over the years has taken a toll physically…
Pitching is pitching. Yer saying they are mentally drained from 2010?
Pitching with a lead, pitching from behind, pitching when games are tied, they are the same. There’s no added stress other than what they generate in their heads. You are saying that they somehow pitched physically differently because the games were so close. They were trying harder? I don’t buy it. Steve Carlton should have burned out 15 years before he did if that was the case. Same with Nolan Ryan. he pitched on a ton of crappy teams.
There are a shitload of reasons for the downturn. Injuries being the main one. The toxic clubhouse angle is entirely new, seeing as the last 3 years were filled with such great team unity and camaraderie.
I don;t see them doing much of anything before the deadline though. However, they are going to look a lot different next year. 2014 suddenly looks like it could be a rebuilding year. Matt and Bummie are the only starters that’ll come back. The pen should be reasonably the same, although Affeldt is gone.
What CAN we sell? Panda? Doubtful he’d get much given his weight and his major slump. Pence? He’s an FA soon enough, and he’s in his own nightmare slump. He’ll get little. Posey? Scoots? Too old. Timmy? Uh, jury’s out. Only Posey is a bona fide player that would bring some nice returns.
The Wheeler deal is done. It was generally lauded at the time. There’s no going back. He has one good start? Cy Young material.
They’ll be sellers, if anything. Of what, your guess is as good or better than mine. Not much I’d want on this Giants squad, or put another way, to pay much for, if I’m another GM with a competitive team. The fall from grace has been shocking, even allowing for injuries.
New thread is up, BTW…
So the power being out on the OBX for four plus hours wasn’t a bad thing?
Not sure Anna can help. but she sure as hell can’t hurt.
